Entry level jigging for demersals
Submitted by 420casts on Thu, 2016-03-24 10:51I've recently had the opportunity to go fishing every week out to Rotto and I've realised this is a good way for me to get into jigging.
I'm looking for advice on the right gear and jigs. At the moment I have a Shimano Cazna 4000 with about 3/4 of a 300m spool of PE4 Sunline and I switch this between an old Penn Powerspin rod and a 7ft Jarvis Walker Aquatec depending on what I'm doing. I'm wanting a rod that will allow me to chase Snapper and Dhus without paying an arm and a leg.
As for jigs, I have a couple of knife jigs and I was given a Shimano Lucanus 100g which I'm really eager to try, but I've heard the Octa jigs are a better option. Soft plastics are also something I wanna test out. Thanks and tight lines in advance !

Unlikely Hypothetical
Submitted by Pembo on Wed, 2016-03-23 22:3010 avid fisherman go to Rotto landbased. They head to their favourite platform and catch 10 dhuies and 10 blackarse and 30 kingfish between them. I am assuming this legal?
I am assuming bag limits apply but not boat limits considering they are off the rocks.

Between the capes
Submitted by lachieH on Wed, 2016-03-23 20:56hi everyone,
I know salmon fishing between the capes is a really good place for salmon fishing ate, but I am not sure where between the capes is best? I was planning on doing the day trip from Perth on Friday to head down between the capes, but I really don't know any beaches along there that are good for salmon. So which beaches that are north of Hamelin bay between the capes are good and reliable beaches for salmon at this time of year? Not looking for your secret spots just a nice place to spend the day at between the capes with my family.
thanks,
lachie

Salmon Rod Suggestions
Submitted by deig on Wed, 2016-03-23 20:11Looking for advice. Looking for a good salmon rod for flicking lures from the beach. Also don't want it super long so I can use it on the boat as well. Will be matched up with a 6000HG Stella. Got a fairly good budget so any suggestion would be great. Thanks

Recent build. 37kg bent butt stand up
Submitted by barneyboy on Wed, 2016-03-23 19:10Finished this off the other week. United composite blank with Aftco hardware.
These blanks have a heap of lifting power and will fish 37 to the hilt..
We decided to go the heavier size 4 butt for ease of mind and wind on roller guides with oversized tip.
Went a standard USA hypalon front grip.
If you are looking to build something like this, I have the specs I used on file.
Happy Fishing!!

International travel with fishing gear
Submitted by K_willo on Wed, 2016-03-23 14:43 Hi guys,
Trying to get over to Costa Rica in the next few months on a little solo fishing adventure. I'll be trying a bit of stickbating and throwing softys around so I'm taking all my own gear.
I've usually just thrown my reels in hand luggage but flying international and with a full camera bag has got my thinking about trying to check them in.
Has anyone checked their reels in for travel (certate and saltigas so not keen on them getting damaged)
Would you trust them in a full on pelican case or should I just stick to hand luggage?
Cheers,

South West Salmon
Submitted by Pezdog on Wed, 2016-03-23 08:08Ok guys
I know the Salmon threads are going to be done to death so just wanted a bit of advice from the South West boys whether (from recent experience) the Salmon will hang around or keep coming through toward end of next month? Basically I have a holiday place down there but wasn't wanting to have to compete with the crowds both on the roads and the beach so didn't plan to go down just yet.
Will make a short trip if my planned dates around end of April will be pointless.
Any advice will be awesome.
Cheers
Ryan

bargain jigs - well bargain everything.
Submitted by anypuddle on Tue, 2016-03-22 20:28Wont be new to many on here but new to me, a mate put me onto "aliexpress". he gets 150g quality demersal jigs in lots of 5 for $6.40us each delivered.
Ive been having a good look and its pretty cool, buying direct from china suppliers. (i do seem to recognize a lot of designs that are sold here at 3+ times the price)
Carbon arrows are a bargain for any archers on site. Plus there are some sweet knives - though some customs will not approve of, lol.
My friend pays be credit card and has got heaps of fishing gear and stuff for his business (trolley wheels and random stuff) with no dramas yet.
No i have no financial interest in aliexpress.!!! Just put my first order in today, will hopefully post a pic of a dhubanger on one of the jigs soon.
Tight lines (on cheap jigs!)

spot stealing f#@kwits or just dont have a clue ??
Submitted by todd davies on Mon, 2016-03-21 15:57Is it just me or over the last few years there seems to be more boats coming closer to you when you are fishing or diving.Im not sure what drives individuals to b line to a boat if they see them fishing or diving but certainly over the years its getting unbelievably frustrating. Two weeks ago I was diving of myalup with a mate and my step son watching the boat (dive flag up) and a muppet drove around my boat and stopped on the bubbles above where we were diving to what I can only assume to mark the spot. Not only is this practice extremely dangerous its illegal to do so. Unfortunately my step son didn't get the boat number but described it as around 6m marone bar crusher with a radar and two large white antennas. He had a radar and still had to park on top of us which gives you a good indication of his intelligence .unfortunatelly without a number we couldn't complete a full report with dept of transport. Is it just me?

What you get Fish wise in a Restuarant
Submitted by crasny1 on Mon, 2016-03-21 12:20Yuk.
When I go out for a meal I always order something seafood.
On Friday went to a "not to be named" restaurant in Mandurah and ordered the special Barramundi. Looked great on the plate but what I got was NO barra. Meat was like mushy crap. Whatever the fish was it wasn't over or under cooked, and was moist BUT it wasn't the flaky Barra I am used to. Unlike me I actually questioned what it was and was told it was Barra. Bollocks I thought because that fish is one easy to recognise and taste (even though I don't rate it very high).
I suspect it was either Nile perch (Imported and hence "old" and meat's gone to mush) or other.
Pisses me off when you order something and you get some cheap alternative.
Has this happened to others on here - I am certain it has.
No wonder I don't go out to often to waste money.

Albany landbased Fishing
Submitted by Stefanvh on Mon, 2016-03-21 10:37Hi All,
I'm heading to Albany for the Easter break from Melbourne. Planning to hit the rocks, beaches and piers within an hour drive of Albany just not sure what to expect and what sort of rods/gear to take.
So far taking 2 surf rods and 2 other heavier spin outfits. Does anyone have a rough idea of where to start, what species are around at the moment and how to get onto them?
Thanks in advance.
Stefan.

Exmouth - Cheap car hire options?
Submitted by drifta on Mon, 2016-03-21 01:05Hey guys, guessing this is in the wrong section but thought I'd give it a shot here since it's the most active.
I'm lucky enough to be flying up to Exmouth for roughly a week at the beginning of April, I've also managed to screw the small budget I had for the trip thanks to an unforseen change in my work and living arrangements and booking the accommodation way to late (basically I'm broke!).
I did a quick search of the forum but didn't see anything that was recent or relevant enough.
So my big question is does anyone know of, or can point me in the right direction to locate a cheap (and I mean cheap) rental/hire/loan car?
I've checked all the ones offered by the companies at the airport and while their rates aren't too bad they'll put a decent dent in the bait and beer budget. Think my rod tube will end up being longer than some of those cars available. Don't have any plans for offroading will most likely just be trying spots between the marina/town to oysters at the furthest so just after something reliable that wont break down and can get me from A to B for a week.
Cheers for any help
(Slightly unrelated but do people usually just make their own rod tubes out of the larger stormwater pipe rather than having to carry and pay baggage fees on multiple regular rod tube?)
Thanks guys

Fisheries have done it again.....well done
Submitted by meglodon on Sun, 2016-03-20 23:01The following information has been gained from the ABC fish reporting site.
It's good to see that DoF has responded quickly to a report by a concerned citizen about unlawful fishing activities.
Well done fisheries keep up the good work which is of benefit to all honest fishos.
USE ILLEGAL FISHING GEAR AND YOU COULD HOOK A FINE
Department of Fisheries Media Release 18 March, 2016. MR07-16
Failure to stay with a net and using illegal gear has caught up with a man from a southern Perth suburb, who was fishing in WA’s north. In Exmouth Court on 8 March, 2016, Brian Robert Elsum from Anketell, was ordered to pay a $600 fine and forfeited his 27 hook setline for a number of illegal fishing gear offences.
The court heard that on Friday 23 October last year, Department of Fisheries’ compliance officers received information regarding illegal fishing activity at Giralia Station in the Exmouth Gulf. When the Fisheries and Marine Officers arrived at the station they retrieved two nets from Giralia Bay that had been set using metal stakes and one setline, with 27 hooks attached, which were unattended at the time.
Whilst retrieving the nets, a number of fish were released to the water. In a video record of interview, the accused admitted to owning and setting the two nets and the line. Senior Fisheries and Marine Officer Ben Gryta said the practice of set lining with dozens of hooks is an unacceptable and an illegal method of fishing. “Exmouth is surrounded by remote coastline and Fisheries and Marine Officers are determined to investigate and respond to illegal fishing activity and we ask anyone with information to call FISHWATCH on 1800 815 507,” Mr Gryta said.
“Fishers should be aware that even in remote locations they need to stick to the rules.”
Net fishers in the Gascoyne are permitted to use only one net at a time and must be in attendance of that net. The use of metal stakes such as star pickets is also prohibited. When line fishing in Western Australian waters, fishers must be in attendance of their line and are restricted to no more than three baits per line.

Kalbarri Fad?
Submitted by tomtom on Sun, 2016-03-20 22:18Hey guys! Up in Kalbarri at the mo and having a blast with the palegics even though its not really turned on yet. Hearing rumours that there is a fad close by with heaps of action at the mo. Does anyone know the location of the Kalbarri FAD? It may be out of reach of my 4.7 platey but hoping its not too far out. Also if there is anyone else up around this way keen for a fish let me know!

Problems with a Raymarine Dragonfly 5
Submitted by Poppy on Sun, 2016-03-20 19:00About a week ago, I bought one of these combos and have had nothing but trouble with it. I've only had it on the water once, and although the fishfinder feature seems to work OK, I am having all sorts of "fun" with the GPS. It will mark a waypoint when you are sitting on the water over the point I want to mark. However, when I have tried to input waypoints at home, that is another story. Sometimes it works and sometimes it won't. When entering the GPS coordinates, it will sometimes allow me to save them. Most times it won't. When that happens, it will also bar me from using the left and right curser feature. But then, sometimes I cannot get the lovely new machine to allow me to "place a waypoint" at all.
I can't fault the guys from All Boats and Caravans, where I bought the machine. They have tried very hard to discover the problem and at present it is at their shop while they download the latest software onto it. Have any other Raymarine users had this problem, or have I just bought a lemon which I should have replaced under warrantee?
