Mangrove sanctuary zone boundarys Exmouth.
Submitted by cruzy111 on Wed, 2016-03-02 17:38 Hi Everyone. In the last couple of years ive found countless boats fishing in mangrove sanctuary zone. A common comeback is that my gps tells me im not in it, and the occasional idiot who gets agro and wants to punch on when told they cant fish there. I dont know which ones but I know lowrance sounders/gps seem to be on most of these boats so I dont know what maps they run. They must have the old bounderies on there map which changed in 2007 . So If your up this way grab a brouchure and make sure your not in it if your fishing around that area.

Its been 11 months since my last fish (said this recovering fishing addict at his first AA meeting (Anglers Anonymous)
Submitted by Andy Mac on Wed, 2016-03-02 13:53Hi All,
Long lost friends in the fishwrecked community, its been a while.... no I didn't get pulled over the side by a world record Dhufish and die a horrible death on the fabled spot known as "The Dropzone". Far from it, I have actually been exploring one of my other (newly re-aquired) passions in life... playing guitar.
As those that know me well would attest, I rarely do things in halves so about 4 years ago I bought a heap of equipment and set about learning to play again after a 25+ year abstinence. This past year I joined a band and jamming/rehearsing regularly took over my weekends, so fishing dropped right down the list. So much so that other than rain, my boat only got wet once last year in April.
Instead of the Fishwrecked-Reeltime magazine, I channelled my creative energies into creating a Youtube guitar cover page "Old Guitar Dad"
www.youtube.com/channel/UC1Ll1jres82nksM2B4c_iGg , (if anyone wants to check it out it has 50+ guitar covers on there now) in an atempt to give me the confidence to actually play in front of an audience for the first time ever. That was a few months ago now and yes I did subsequently play live a couple of times, which was super nerve wrecking, but enjoyable all the same.
Back to fishing: I am about to head up to Exmouth for 2 weeks fishing to break my 12 month fishing drought. I'm getting nervous as my fishing MOJO must be at an all time low.
We got a few marlin a couple of years ago and found a bit more productive ground which we will hopefully take a look see this year. I just checked my reels and thankfully they haven't seized up, so I may have a chance to rekindle my passion for fishing, having scratched the musical itch sufficiently this past couple of years.
Wish me luck, and hopefully we will re-aquaint with a couple of these fish from the last trip.

Frozen bait - how fresh is it?
Submitted by Jason P on Tue, 2016-03-01 19:36When you buy frozen bait from your local bait store, is there any way to know how old it is. As far as I've seen there is no packaged date or best before. And some smaller stores that dont have high turnover may have there bait supply for quite a while as there seems to be no way to tell.
Maybe bait suppliers should put a package date for bait, giving some idea of its freshness IMO?

Big Angry Fish - A Call from Milan
Submitted by Mick C on Tue, 2016-03-01 12:29Received a call from Milan from Big Angry Fish this morning to discuss burley and other things. What a top bloke to give me a call from NZ in the middle of filming duties for the next series.
Milan provided some very helpful insights into his burley fishing techniques. An amazing fact was that he and Nathan typically use in excess of 40kg of burley per day on their trips. He has put me in touch with their manufacturer/supplier in NZ so we can discuss options for improving our fish based burley offering in WA. I will provide any updates on this through our web site and blog/facebook pages.
Another thing he mentioned was the value of releasing cubed pilchards for the burley trail. In this respect I have chased down a supply of pilchard “thirds” and because we have a fish processing licence we can potentially produce packs of pilchard “cubes”. Is this something that people would be interested in, and if so what size packs would be best?
We will shortly be playing burley related episodes of Big Angry Fish in our Showroom. Don’t forget the show is on 7mate on Sundays, just before Ryan’s excellent offering. What better way to spend the day when the wind is up than watching these two quality shows.

Catching longtails in the sound???
Submitted by Markie on Tue, 2016-03-01 06:32So in the last few years i have had a fair few attempts at bust ups of longtails. Casting my stickbaits and minnows smack bang in the middle of them and absolutley nothing!!!! not even a follow. Have had live hezzas in amongst them and not a touch. Trolled for them and nothing.
So my question is. How on earth do you tempt these longtails in perth??? Iv seen a few landbased ones landed but very few.

Rotto fishing spots
Submitted by 420casts on Mon, 2016-02-29 21:05 A group of us are heading out around 8 or 9am sometime over the next few days to go see our mate pull his pots. He's no good for fishing spots and I've got no real boat fishing experience out there I can rely upon so I'm looking for some pointers. Apparently the West End is where we wanna be concentrating on this time of year, as the bigger things like to linger - however we don't mind drifting for KG's or smaller edibles.
Main thing I wanna know is if we end up drifting around the W.E. or nearby (outside the sanctuary zone of course), is it worth throwing a few jigsheads / SP's down or am I best to use a sturdy Paternoster with baits ? Would be good to get into something bigger like a YTK / Sambo etc.
We leave from Fremantle, so we will probably also troll 1 or 2 lures once we are going, but I am interested to know if blue mackeral will work as a good Spaniard bait, since thbey're around.
Cheers in advance for any info.

Offshore Mandurah Whiting
Submitted by crasny1 on Mon, 2016-02-29 12:41Quick report.
Decided to head offshore yesterday. Willyweather had <1m swell and <10knot wind. Sounded good for a bash but decided against heading further offshore as it was just wrong. Deckie (other half) gets green under the gills with slop and it was sloppy but still OK for a couple of nautical miles off. Whiting pretty much anywhere off the cut adjacent to reef on sand I was told. Was surprised by 2 things. Caught a couple of red herring (goatfish) which I know in Victoria is prised by some Italians as a prize fish. Do they occur in numbers here, as I have never caught one here? Fighting another day they are.
And the Deckie caught a sand whiting 42cm on the brag mat. I thought originally it had to be a yellowfin but it certainly wasn't. I have caught plenty of sandies but didn't expect one that size. What is the sizes that one see. Never realy targeted offshore whiting as I would have gone further wide chasing demersals in the past and mostly have fished further offshore up Karratha way with the "new" Mrs/Deckie.
We only needed a feed so got our 30 easily and gently steamed back dragging the scaling bag which does make a huge difference. Finished with a kilo off fillets which is more than enough for a fresh fish feed.
Had pics on GoPro but as it is a new hero4 I stuffed the recording up :-(.
Hoping someone can answer the questions as I am fairly new to targeting whiting down south from a boat, but have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. Took out a berley bomb but they were on the bite from go to whoa so didn't even use it. Some other models of sandies were typical "chippy" size, but a few were also thumpers, but nothing like the big model.

Short Term Boat Storage - Geraldton
Submitted by southcoast on Sun, 2016-02-28 15:11Got six weeks leave coming up mid year (from June) and heading to Ningaloo. I have to tow camper and boat (4.7m) so need to do two trips from Albany.
A couple of years ago I managed to store the boat at my brother in laws place in Carnamah and only had to come back 2/3 of the way to collect the boat.
Looking to repeat the process this year but in Geraldton instead of Carnamah.
Anyone recommend a secure storage place that will take my boat for approx 4weeks?

Night fishing for Pinkies and Dhuies
Submitted by Poppy on Fri, 2016-02-26 19:59I've never been out for a night fish and have been trying to arrange to go out with Craig Warne tomorrow night. Anyway, it seems that he couldn't get enough interest to make it worth his while and he's heading up to the Abrolhos in a couple of weeks. Does anybody have any recommendations for other charters that take charters out at night? I'm not interested in sambo jigging. I would prefer to chase the aforementioned snapper etc. Any good suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks
Baz
