Overhead rod for a Curado 150 or 200 reel
Submitted by Cracker Fish on Tue, 2022-03-22 15:32Hi folks,
I have a Curado 150 HG and a Curado 200 HG reel and looking to match to two rods around the 6-12 kg for flicking lures off a boat for barra etc. People talk about a Shimano T-Curve and others but I looking for real life wisdom and experience. Would one rod rigged with 25 lb braid and one with 30lb braid be silly? Thannk you. Richard

Monkey Mia
Submitted by Sully on Sun, 2022-03-20 10:50Hi guys, heading up to Monkey Mia early May with the missus and my 6 year old twin boys will be taking 6m boat. never fished the area before and know the pinky ban will be on. Not looking for anyones marks or anything but just chasing a bit of direction off anyone who has fished the area before. Have had a bit of a look at the charts seems shallow threw most. Iam I best sounding the interesting looking contour lines that are on charts or best trying to find lumps in the flatter areas? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as kids don't really find it that much fun driving around trying to find lumps holding fish

Rod suggestions
Submitted by Doubledipped on Sun, 2022-03-20 10:05Gday all.
Need a spin rod, mid price range to match an 8000 reel with 60 lb braid that can be used for trolling, bottom bashing and jig heavier than 230g.
Mostly using pe3 jigger, need something else to hang bait off and troll, occasional heaveir jig up north with enough grunt to skull drag away from the sharks...
Open to anything, cheers

Mussels
Submitted by Livewire on Thu, 2022-03-17 17:46Had a chat with some guys sent to the freo harbour to test the black mussels growing under the wharf today. Now I've seen some media releases on the toxins in the river but never had a opportunitie to ask some questions myself. So away I went.. what are they like ? Answer. I wouldn't eat them! Is there anywhere in the river that you would eat them? NO! What about black wall reach? No probably the worst spot as the toxins settle in the deep water. All up they said buy them from sealanes . This Includes around the heavy industry in the sound! Not good. Didn't ask about the crabs just didn't want to hear the answer. Bugger. Some of the biggest and best seafood we get was from the swan but the hazards of big businesses.

Spares on the road
Submitted by Silver Fox on Thu, 2022-03-17 07:44Hi all,
Third times a charm and I'm finally transporting my big boat from C'von to its new home at Flying Fish Point just south of Cairns.
15 miles to the Great Barrier Reef......
Enough of that shit.
Anyhow I'm compiling a list of bits an pieces I'm going to be needing for the ( slooooow ) 5700k journey.
A sense of humor is essential!.
Trailer is brand spanking new so there should be no issues here. I'll organize some spare bearings and grease as an insurance policy.
So far I've got a spare starter motor, alternator, hoses and belts for the truck. Plenty of coolant and oil, fuses etc, etc. If it's any job bigger than this then it's going to be out of my skill set.
1/2 inch socket set
Big hammer, assorted screwdrivers, pliers, side cutters, hacksaw, big shifters, multimeter, box cutter knife, electrical tape, cable ties and some good old fencing wire.
What have I forgotten and what else would you pack?.
Yes, the bimini will be coming off for transport!.

monkey mia trip.
Submitted by Sea goat on Mon, 2022-03-14 15:16hey guys.
heading to monkey mia on the 28th march for 7 days and brining the boat. never fished up here before.
have read a few prev posts abut crabbing, and am keen to give it a crack. just wondering if too late in the season, or still worth brining the nets?
also will be launching mainly form the ramp near monkey mia. wondering if anyone can comment on how good the ramp is, or any issues i may expect?
lastly, as far as fishing goes, is there decent fishing this side, or am i best heading over to denham side and launching there? will be much more convenient to launch from the ramp monkey mia side. any partic equipment/rigs people could reccomend? so far thinking standard bottom rigs, and a whole unweighted mulie out the back.
gonna do a mix of trolling and bottom bouncing. not really sure what to expect given some comments on the recent pressure the area has experienced, but who knows, maybe theat ever elusive mackerel will end up on the boat!!
cheers!
Goat.

Western Australian Family Fishing Alliance
Submitted by sealure on Sun, 2022-03-13 08:59Acccording to the Sunday Times today a new group called Western Australian Family Fishing Alliance (WAFFA) has been formed in response to the proposed changes in fishing rules. The group has reportedly been founded by local tackle , boating industry figures & keen recreational fishers.
I have long held the the view that any organisation that is largely funded by Government can do little more than act as a mouthpiece for the Government that provides their funding. This I believe is Reckfishwest's biggest impediment.
I note that the reduction in fish fillet weight was according to Reckfishwest only approved if combined with shark mitigation strategies. No shark mitigation has occurred. Also the fillet weight reduction was supposed to be for a 12 month period. I'm not holding my breath.
Reckfishwest is definitely doing a great job in other areas which don't threaten Government changes whch seems to be driven by a Fisheries department with a very strong green agenda.
Perhaps the formation of this new entity will give us the chance to have our concerns heard.
We are invited to sign a petition asking the Minister to consider all the options before introducing new restrictions.
The petition is titled Don't Take our Fishing Freedom which can be accessed by entering those words in Google search.

Friday fish
Submitted by Sea goat on Sat, 2022-03-12 12:21Headed to the fads on Friday. Was casting stickbaits and caught a couple of these skipjack. Bloody good fighters. All released well. As usual bunch of people start motoring back and forward over the fads, and people jumping in with spears, so things shut down pretty quick. Gave up and went bottom bouncing. After having not caught a dhu in over 8 months despite plenty of effort, managed to get 2 decent size fish, only to have everything except the heads taken by the bloody sharks! We're on different spots. Got one good baldy past them for dinner. Great conditions, frustrating day tho!

Snapper fishing in the harbour on soft plastics
Submitted by GCjetski on Thu, 2022-03-10 13:50Snapper fishing in the harbour is on the menu this week, and we're catching them on softbaits
Getting fisted……
Submitted by Silver Fox on Thu, 2022-03-10 11:07Leading on from Adam's guess the car quote game I thought why not chuck up some more examples of getting bent over for no apparent reason apart from greed and opportunistic behavior.
My latest example of Thursday Island booze shopping.
$90 for 16 cans of Little Creature Pale ale........
Tasted damn good.

Fisheries checking catch
Submitted by davewillo on Tue, 2022-03-08 13:12Spent a great weekend in Herring Bay at Garden Island. Was chatting to one of the old-timers and apparently Fisheries came through during the week when there were only a few regulars in the bay. Got one bloke for 2 undersize silver bream in his cray pots - $100 fine. Pretty silly as herring are easy to catch and probably better bait. I was surprised that they went to those lengths but rules are rules.
There was one bloke on the island that had crays in a keeper pot who waited them out on the beach. He basically lives there and would never take undersize or break the rules in any way but how can you prove that the crays in your keeper pot were legitimately caught over a period of time? What are the rules around that?

New to site...seeking fishing mates
Submitted by 2na on Mon, 2022-03-07 14:19Hi, I'm new to this site and am hoping to find some saltwater fishing mates. I moved to Perth in 2015 from the American northwest and brought with me more than twenty years of expereince and gear for trolling, jigging, casting and bottom fishing. Hoping to find a few regular fishing mates--I'm easy-going, hard-working, safety-minded and I catch fish...could be a good addtiion to your boat and crew. More info on my profile. If you're interested in meeting, send me a private message and let's talk. Cheers, Michael

Wash Down Connector
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Mon, 2022-03-07 07:57Does anyone know what the female wash down connections points at Hillarys are called? I'm installing some 25mm pipe off my retic for a higher pressure wash down area right next to the boat and want to install the same quick connect system they have at Hillarys.
Cheers JF

Deckie spot available tomorrow, launch from Woodies
Submitted by banana on Sat, 2022-03-05 19:27Bring own gear, tie your own knots and doesn't get seasick.
Fishing around 40m depth.
Aim to be home by 2pm latest.
add one to russ's tally...
Submitted by rac on Sat, 2022-03-05 15:02this guy stress tested some knots... weighed in exactly at 15lb and caught on 15lb line.
fun metro catch for me last night on half a herring.
was busy googling posts on here on how to process a shark and realised i forgot to gut it immediately (was about 2hrs after capture
)... i did bleed it straight away but i read gutting was more important?
anyway, in the freezer now, i guess i will try thawing out in milk/water/salt mix in a few weeks. anyone hot smoke shark? that might mask any odour as well.
will be putting a sharp filleting knife on the shopping list, first time filleting one i did make a little bit of mess.
another question - if i gut and bleed them, can i leave them refrigerated or in a ice slurry and fillet the next day? and when gutting do i need to remove the gut lining straight away or can that be done later? be nice to get some sleep before playing with knives....

Sharing boat catch
Submitted by Pete F on Fri, 2022-03-04 09:37It makes you wonder how serious fisheries are about reducing demersal mortalities, 4 years on and they have yet to legislate sharing of catches either lobster or fin fish. Now we have a new minister, makes you wonder are the enforcement officers still taking an educative approach? "This streamlining of the rules will require changes to regulations, but in the interim Fisheries and Marine officers will take an educative approach and work with the recreational fishing community in the spirit of my approval to draft the new regulations." www.mediastatements.wa.gov.au/Pages/McGowan/2018/01/Sharing-recreational-bag-limits-on-boats-it-just-makes-sense.aspx#:~:text=Comments%20attributed%20to%20Fisheries%20Minister,bag%20limit%20is%20not%20exceeded.

Trevally fishing and testing new jetski mods
Submitted by GCjetski on Thu, 2022-03-03 13:54Been a long time between fishing trips for me so it was good to get back out on the water!
Sounder advice
Submitted by still trying on Thu, 2022-03-03 13:20I purchased a furuno gp1971f around Xmas time and installed it myself I have run the tranny leads under the deck away from other electrics but have got my power from the bus bar under the dash. I get a good clear picture when running every now and then I do loose the bottom but it normally comes back, I have a 5.2m quintrex but I do get alot more noise on the screen when the motor is running if I run my power back to my battery instead will this remove all that noise or make it better at least.
