Gillnetting
Submitted by docmattskin on Tue, 2012-10-23 13:51On the back of the wonderful success - thanks to rec fisherman - of the supertrawler Abel Tasman having to leave our coast before it's major trawling operations begin - I am wondering whether we ( rec fisherpeoples) should use our common voice to try and stop the gillnetting that is raping Geographe bay of its fish stock? Records reflect that Geo bay is a breeding ground for dhufish and many other species and the decrease in numbers of these fish over the past decade has been significant - and alarming!
I would just like to get a feel for hoe many local fishos are annoyed by this pillage and how many would be willing to put their voice into a protest against the gillnetting in Geographe bay?

Newbie to Perth fishing scene
Submitted by CraigSpedding on Tue, 2012-10-23 08:30Hi All,
I'm new to Perth and the country so after a few decent river spots for tailor, bream and flatties etc. Cheers all. Ive invested in a decent set of hard and soft plastics so its all go as soon as i get some spots to have a crack!
Also do any of you guys weight hard bodied plastics? for example a small round weight to a swivel then maybe 60-80cm of leader down to the lure? In england it was used quite alot to cast further but unsure if you guys do it?
Thanks again,
Craig

Fishing Mandurah
Submitted by randall df223 on Mon, 2012-10-22 21:08Have booked to camp at Mandurah this weekend, just for couple of nights and will have the opportunity to head out early saturday for a quick fish, before the family requires my undevoted attention....
would anyone like to point me in the direction of some KGW, or alternatively some catch and release fun on the sambos? Will I find either on or around James Service Reef or on the first bit of ground outside the cut (about 1.5 - 2 nm out)?

Muddies in Broome
Submitted by Cruise Control on Mon, 2012-10-22 18:31I was fortunate to do a few days with work in Broome and stayed over for the weekend. A mate took us out mudcrabbing and we got our limit in 3 pulls. It was certainly an interesting exercise as the tide rises so quickly you lose track of where you are and where you set the nets. We ended up after the first drop leaving the floats hanging in the trees !
I am told that they were all greens except for the biggest one which was a brown. Not something that a Perthite manages to do too often. The funny part is that we got them in the creek at the back of Coles in town !
Tasted bloody good washed down with a couple of cold beers !

Has anyone made their own rod?
Submitted by viking22 on Mon, 2012-10-22 17:54I was thinking of getting some gear together and making a rod. I am pretty handy and have replaced guides before, due to the fact i am a bit clumsy and heavy handed sometimes.
The question is how do you know what size blanks to buy and guides. also where to place the guides. Is there any info out there someone can PM me or put up here to help me out.
I am wanting to make a 7foot 6-12kg plastics rod. and a 8 foot Stickbait rod to throw stickbaits that are around the 150gram size.

Broome Recon - looking for a couple of clarifications
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Mon, 2012-10-22 13:20Heading up to Broome on Thursday and have a day to get out and wet a line landbased. I've got some great info through the search function but just need to clarify a couple of things I can't find info on:
- Can someone give me a heads up on where Willie Creek is? Is it part of the Dampier Creek system or is it somewhere else?
- How's the accessability to the estuary system north of Broome around Kennedy's Cottage? (or is that Willie Creek?)

Front Page of the West
Submitted by Cameron71 on Mon, 2012-10-22 12:16Is that a fishrecked boy on the front page today?
I am waiting for more shark hysteria.....
I don't actually shark fish but I see the attraction. Its newsworthy I guess, and he will want to keep that page, but I can't help thinking that a lower profile might be a good idea (which is not intended to be a criticism of the guys who got the shark - you can't exactly stick a fish that size down your jumper and walk off whistling nonchalantly).
I believe this was on TV as well.
Have the calls to ban shark fishing from the shore started?
Anyway, sterling effort IMO.

Bloom of red jellyfish
Submitted by Starfisher on Sun, 2012-10-21 22:50Hi all
Im doing some research on the big bloom of red jellyfish Crambione mastigophora (see picture) that washed up on Cable Beach, Broome over the last month. They also washed up there in 2006 and a bit further south on 80 Mile Beach in 2011.
I would like to hear from anyone who saw a similar but much larger bloom in April 2000 that reportedly spread between Exmouth and Rottnest Island. I would especially like to know if anyone saw that bloom reported on in any fishing or nature magazines or local newspapers.
Many thanks for your help.

Submitted by catchalittle on Sun, 2012-10-21 14:25Went up to the shed and smelt something rotten when inside and the bait freezer (industrial size) had carked it sometime in the last few days and man what a stink all the bait was off and a grey red soupy mess at the bottom took me a hour to unload it then dispose of it in a hole and three showers later and I still smell whiffy. We did have power outages on Thursday?Friday such a waste of sooooooooo much bait

Dunsborough
Submitted by PT on Sun, 2012-10-21 12:12 Hey Fishos, im heading on down to dunsborough with a bunch of mates at the start of Nov. We've got a house located pretty central near the shops, about a block from the beach.
Im planning on catching some whiting off the beach right near the house on prawns and poppers, any tips? also if anyone know if theyre around?. Also, does anything bigger hunt the waters there? Is it worth chopping a whiting up and putting it on a heavier rig or live baiting in the same bay? Ive been thinking of wading/walking/swimming out to the sandbar and throwing off there if anything will bite
Also since im with a bunch of mates who dont fish much i need some where to take them where we can throw a few beach rods off the beach with some pilchards or squid on the end, drink a few beers and swim and have a shot at bringing in something more interesting.
None of us have 4wds but a bit of a walk wouldnt bother us too much.
If anyone has some advice I'd really appreciate it.
Cheers
