Mindarie Night Fish - Weather Conditions

For those signed up for the Mindarie Night Fish next Saturday, I was wondering what conditions would warrant the night being put off until the following week. I just want to make sure that you will all feel safe and confident with going out there. Each skipper has their own opinion on what they deem is acceptable conditions for their own boat so I would just like to know what you guys think.

I know that atleast one of you is in a tinny, what is the worst conditions you feel safe with taking your boat out at night?

Fishing Karratha

my mate neil is heading up to Karratha in 2 weeks for a job he has a couple of days off and wants to get into some land base fish. if anyone could help me point him to the spots and ill send him them on to him.

cheers guys

Night Fish Preparation

OK guys only a week or so to go until we get out there in the pitch black.

So we all have a chance at a fish, how about posting up a couple of tips for all us skippers that are relatively new to the night fishing game.

Everything from lights onboard through to glow baits and strobes, any special techniques that work better at night. I'm all ears!

ocean reef

does anyone know any sambo spots of ocean reef and what areas i should look for , if i were to target sambos just one day will be good to have a bit of a tug of these fish without going to far

cheers

michael

Booze and boating

Hey guys,

Just wondering what people's views are on drinking alcohol while out boating. I'm not talking charter trips but fishing/drinking on private recreational vessels.

Personally I leave the drinking and partying for when I've returned to dry land. I'd rather be 100% switched on when out on the water, especially as I'm usually the skipper.

What thoughts have you?

John

Shark bay

Looking at going up next month as only have 6 days off work. Not sure where to fish. Looking at chasing reef fish and hope to get macks and tuna. Prob stay in Denham and launch from there. How far for good grounds and where can i find GPS marks.

Thanks

Back from Nornalup

Hi Guys,

I am back from Nornalup/Bow Bridge after a weekend of celebrating and fishing. I will put up a few photos up now and some stories later. I will also be in touch with all of you who have sent private messages as I had a very slow connection down south and was only able to check latest content.

I hope you all had a great long weekend,
Cheers,
Adam

Metro Salmon In October?

Mybe you won't believe me, but the lad went fishing this morning off the beach here in Mandurah...

He was chasing some whiting he had heard reports of.

When he got to the spot (not far from Bouvard Cut) he saw a school of salmon harrasing the whiting he was after...

So he nailed a couple - along wth the other guy who was fishing there.

I am used to THE SALMON RUN being in April May & June as they come up to the back of Rotto to spawn before returning to the south coast and points beyond Esperance - then across the Tasman and New Zealand + 3 kings islands etc before returning again in 12 months time.

In the past I've had a few show up early on the south coast like February - but I just haven't come across salmon in schools & numbers in the metro / Mandurah area in October before.

It's not like these are small juvenile salmon either, these are the full blown mature 8 or 9 pounders and better (least the one sitting in the freezer is at least that)...

He got a few pics on his camera phone I'll try and get him to download tonight when he gets home from work and post them up. (Edit done!)

SO there you go - salmon off the beach this morning in October in Mandurah. I am beginning to wonder if the worlds weather hasn't gone completely screwey!

Cheers!

Help from Pilbara Pirates?

Hi guys.

Have a character named Dan T Cook,

commin out from the USA to fly fish his way around Oz, who's landed in Sydney about today I think...and going to make his way out West to fish with me down here in Mandurah as part of his intended 5 or 6 weeks fly fishing the WA coast up to Broome - then Darwin...

This is the post he made at my website!

Quote:
G'day WA fisherpersons! Shann suggested I join the forum and start getting to know the community. I will be traveling through WA in mid- to late-October as part of a 2 year, around-the-world fly fishing expedition. My trip is primarily “do-it-yourself” while relying on local fly fishermen (and women!) to suggest places and techniques. I gladly accept offers to fish with local enthusiasts who are kind enough to “show me the ropes” at the local fishing spots. In return, I’ll pick up the beers afterward.

I am currently 2.5 months into the trip (I'm posting this from the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska) and can say that this is already the adventure of a lifetime! The fishing has been incredible, but equally significant are the wonderful, generous and interesting people that I have met along the way. The outpouring of assistance from Aussie rodders has already been overwheming and I can hardly wait to start the Oz portion of the trip.

I welcome all suggestions for places to fish, species to pursue, fishing clubs to consult, people to contact, etc. All stories and photos of this adventure will be posted at flyfishingtheglobe.net (the official expedition website) and excerpts will be posted at www.anglingreport.com.

Thank you and I look forward to meeting everyone!
endquote.

I am hoping that any members here from say Carnarvon north - might be able to point Dan and his fiancee` in the right direction for a few fish when they are your neck of the woods later in the month and thru November.

The guys a laugh a minute and a bit of a daredevil - which you'll see if you check out his website - he's on a 2 year oddysey fly fishing around the world...and a mad keen 4wd offroader as well..

Anyway - if any of you can help him out, it would be much approiciated I'm sure, and likely you'll end up immortalised on his website or in his book or whatever!

This is the last I heard from him a week ago.

G'day all!

Thank you for all your recommendations, suggestions and informative tips. We will be arriving in Sydney Oct. 2, and after getting organized, heading to the best fishing Australia has to offer...the WEST Coast!

We are planning on devoting 5-6 weeks to fishing WA. I'll be contacting everyone that has extended an invitation to fish. Thanks again for all the help!

Kind regards,

Dan

I'm hoping a few a you guys in Exmouth & Karratha / Dampier can take him under your wing and show him how to catch Barra's outta the creeks etc (Mouth of Johns Creek @ Pt Sampson?)..which I am sure he would just love!

Also I reckon he should fish the houseboat & flying foam Passage etc

Please check out his website - the video of his Dakar Rally 4wd entry is wicked...and if you can help him out up north (Kimberleys as well if anyones from up that far) then send him a email and invite him for a fish please.

I'd like for him to go away with a good idea what Western Australia has to offer in the way of fishing!

Cheers & many thanks in advance!

Mindarie Boating Tragedy

I truly hope all on the forum are safe and sound. Not what you want to hear at any time, a fellow fisho lost at sea and in my local waters. One confirmed drowned another still missing and two very lucky lads in hospital.

Channel 7 news confirmed none were wearing life jackets.

Must have been a freak wave, though if they were 4nm north west of Mindaria that places them on or abouts the north end of Staggies reef which breaks in anything above 2m and it was closer to 5m out there today.

Thoughts and prayers for the families of those lost at sea.

HMAS Perth Dive Wreck footage

Anyone online right now, there is a school of sambo's or amberkjacks that just moved in to the wreck. I'll post a screen shot soon, here is the link if you want to watch the live action.

Herring around but a few moments ago I saw some big fish move in. Hope they hang around.

Mindarie Night Fishing expedition

A few threads ago it was suggested we organise a Fishwrecked NOR night time Dhuie assault out from Mindarie.

I personally haven't fished at night much at all from my own boat and would love to give it a go with a small flotilla of boats on the water at the same time (for safety reasons).

If anyone is interested in getting such an event organised, post your comments below and we will try and get it to happen over the next month or so (weather permitting).

My suggestion would be to meet up at mindarie ramp about 5-30pm, head out and fish the sunset for snapper on or around Staggies reef, then maybe head to some promising ground for Dhuies etc. Back at the ramp by say 10-30pm for a late evening beer or two.

GPRX How to keep GPS Spots Secret?

http://www.asiagis.com.sg/agis2/agis_about_us.asp

We are about to get a new technology rollout in the next 3 months or so that MAY make keeping your GPS waypoints a secret from fishing buddies quite difficult!

Quote:
GprX™, world’s 1st Zero Hardware, Zero Cost location technology.

Thats right - your mobile phone will be trackable - and all it needs is a once off software upgrade!!

Even someone onshore could note down the positions where your mates mobile phone stops still for any length of time - while he has it in his pocket!

There goes all your waypoints!

Not only that - the person can navigate back to those same spots without a gps - just using their mobile phone!

Scarey technology people!

Your boss will be able to see where you are by your mobile phones location...

Course it can have it's good uses too - like keeping a track of your kids (or your missus if she's bangin her boss in work hours!)

Hide a mobile phone in your car and you can track it, if it's stolen! ;o)

Theres a zillion & one uses people haven't even dreamed of yet!

Probably 3 months away - zero hardware & zero cost (after the initial software upgrade for $29) - it will be the next big thing in mobiles...and a lot of the manufacturers are signing MOU's with the company to include it standard into new phones, new sim cards etc etc...

So how do you know - if the guy with you - has a phone thats pinching all your GPS marks???

What about charter boats? Will you be able to take mobile phones 0n Charter boats after this????

Lots of implications here people - just a heads up hey! ;o)

Cheers!

Deceitful?

I had an argument, well lets say 'debate' with my parents about a comment that was made in reference to journalists and the articles published in fishing magazines today.
The comment in question was something along the lines of the fact that you can't rely on the credibility of articles written today mainly the fact that pictures might not be as recent as the author makes them out to be and the location is not what it seems.
I rebutted by saying that this is unethical and most fishing journalists have morals and wouldn't be deceitful to their readers. I will stick by that for the time being. It did get me thinking though, how sure can we be that what we are reading is a true recount of what happened and that the pictures are in fact from that particular outing and not from years past?

What do you think? Do you beleive that what fishing journalists write is credible or do you think it depends on each individual write? Do you think someone would go to terms to make things up in order to 'jazz' it up a bit and make it sound more interesting for sales purposes?
