No boat no worries
Submitted by tcarroll on Mon, 2024-01-08 07:01With the wind finally looking to be down on Saturday morning, the original plan was to punch out for a fish in the boat..... In the end, I was too lazy and got out of bed a bit late so opted to just go for a beach bash instead. Driving through town looked like every man and his dog were heading out in the boats so glad I missed the commotion at the ramps!
Back down to the beach with a small shovel to collect some ghosties and straight into it. Was pretty slow for the first hour but then started to turn on. The bluebone takes are very distinct. A premature strikes to try and keep the fish from burying me straight in the reef so didn't manage to set hooks and was cursing myself. Shortly after, got the hookup on a good fish but completely straightened hook with my drag at full lock. New hook and back into it, getting a medium size fish shortly after. Adamant this fish was too small to be the culprit, I was back out there for another crack. Shortly after again, a huge take and I was convinced I must have been back onto the same fish. Plenty of close calls during the fight with the constant feeling of the leader on reef but eventually managed to drag the fish to the beach.... This hook had only just held on also!
Quick pack-up and back home for a 2.5hour round trip. Wouldn't dream of making that time for a boat mission so in the end, it paid to be lazy! Shot out to Bundegi for a dip around lunch time and the ramp was absolute chaos.

Two action packed Days
Submitted by sea-kem on Sun, 2023-12-31 18:14The last two being a bit iffy thought bugger it we're punching out for a crack.
So bloody glad we did.
First day bag out with a 10.1kg Banger caught by the deckie.

Second trip today wasn't confident as you surely can't repeat a good bag lik that two days in a row, well....
12.3kg buck by yours truly.

Happy days and over 30 crays during the week's break.
We do live in a good state. But still a big FU Don Punch.

Submitted by Nutter on Sat, 2023-12-30 13:01Hi all,
I've just recently moved to Bremer Bay and was curious if anyone has fished the upper freshwater reaches of the Bremer and Gairdner River systems, is there Marron or fish to be caught??

Strange parasitic eel
Submitted by Pete F on Wed, 2023-12-27 07:43Found what looks like a eel inside a snapper gut cavity. It's attached to the liver. Has like little claspers along its body had to literally pull it out of attachment to all the guts.
Never seen this before any ideas?

The new Fisheries app a set up?
Submitted by Pete F on Fri, 2023-12-15 08:04I just get the feeling we are being set up here.
Fisheries will use what info they get from the app to say we are catching more than we are allocated. Remembering fisheries are saying our quota works out at 2.8kg per fisher, which never added up to begin with, most fishers get more than that a single trip. The app is just one step in the process to say the new rules are not working. Remembering the new rules are pretty much encouraging people to high grade to 4 big dhus per trip.
At some point Fisheries have had an ohh shit moment and realized they have been under estimating the rec catch level. Sweeping that under the carpet, because they would look incompetant. We have come up with "the stocks are not recovering fast enough". So they wanted to limit the season to 3 months per year at the very least when they started this process. But there was huge kick back all the bussiness and smal towns effected. Just look how its destroyed the charter fishery and many tackle stores etc. and thats at a 6 month ban!
When the first consultation came out one of the options to manage the fishery was to nominate to fish. The option was to have 2 days available per angler per year. Another option was to use tags, one would expect about 2 tags per licence to keep even close to the 2.8kg. I will guess the information from the app will move us to one of these options.

Submitted by sunshine on Tue, 2023-12-12 08:25As was suggested before, why not seek assistance from people who can actually catch fish .......oh no, they don't want anyone else shark fishing as it might put the public at risk

Whale at South Beach
Submitted by Swompa on Sun, 2023-12-10 19:59Righto, who was it?
We came across this sperm whale in between fish rock and the beach. It was just doing circles.
We kept our distance because I was flying the drone and Claire was on the helm but old mate drifted a bit too close and the whale didn't like it

Nothing like a Cyclone to get motivated.
Submitted by Silver Fox on Fri, 2023-12-08 20:12After having a failed attempt to get the big duck from Cairns to Darwin eight weeks ago with the end result being the boat, truck and ( slightly broken ) trailer sitting in the port Hinchinbrook marina waiting patiently for me to come and collect them. The grand plan was to leave them parked there for the wet season and drag em home to Darwin in April / May next year.
Tc Jasper has well and truly put a rocket up my ass. Knowing my luck it will cross the coast right where everything is sitting and it's not going to be the wisest place to have em parked...
Google image Port Hinchinbrook Marina and TC Yasi, it makes me want to barf.
I'm due to hop on a plane Sunday night and get over to Cairns followed by a Greyhound ride down to Hinchinbrook. Pull off all of the Hubs and take em to Townsville to get them re studded and collect a new hub for the trailer. Then it's back up to Hinchinbrook to get everything re assembled and hit the road for Darwin. Hopefully this will see me still having a nice boat as opposed to a Munted pile of Fibreglass and aluminum that I spent far, far too many hours making look pretty.
The joys of owning a boat!.

Mobile mechanic NOR
Submitted by Curndog on Wed, 2023-12-06 05:19Hi guys,
anyone know a mobile mechanic NOR? Went to drop boat in this morning and trim switch is gone. It's like the button is stuck in down on the outboard and it flattened the batteries. 2005 etec 225 seems I need a new switch

Exmouth disappointment
Submitted by Paul N on Tue, 2023-12-05 15:06 Just got back from 2 weeks in Exmouth . First time I've been there in late November as I go every year in March at Gamex time .
the plan was to fish for Marlin out from Tantabiddi and hopefully chase sails in the gulf if they were still there .
first day there we drove to tantabiddi all excited at the days prospects. Dissapointed to find the ramp is un usable due to sand build up . It was mid tide and you could have got the boat off the trailer but the end of the jetty had hardly any water . Not good with a 22foot deep V inboard glass boat . A 15 foot boat was trying to launch and he bottomed out and did a prop in the attempt .
I know the ramp is dredged for gamex but it didn't even occur to us that there would be no water there and our hopes were dashed .
We did all our launching at bundegi or Exmouth marina and I've never seen the water so lifeless . No bird action , no tuna bustups and very few fish on any of the gulf shoals or muirons . All in all a fishless trip apart from one striped Marlin and a couple of wahoo in 70mtrs out from north west reef .Still had good time and the beer was cold but more fish would have made the trip . Heading back in April so hopefully the ramp is usable .

Esperance Salmon - gang hook size and type
Submitted by Ados1972 on Mon, 2023-12-04 17:08Hi there
I have a question about a rig set up for Salmon /tailor/Mullaway for surf beach fishing down Esperance for family Xmas holidays. I've dusted off my 20 year old 650 Alvey and 13 footer going oldschool after Salmon etc. I'm mainly a fly fisherman but don't really want to deal with waves=surf etc with a fly rod.
My plan is to fish mulies on a 4 gang hook setup either with a running ball sinker/star sinker or just bait casting. I'm wandering want size and type of hook to gang. Back in the day I used to use a gang of four 4/0 Tarpons for tailor but not sure if I should go to 5/0 for Salmon. I've used Kendall Kirbys and limericks on the past also but always preferred Tarpons.
Any help appreciated
Cheers

Shade cloth
Submitted by Ericl on Sat, 2023-12-02 09:20Hi. I want to have a shade cloth made up to fit to the front of my boat as it faces due west when parked in my driveway. Will just need to be cut / sewn to fit and press studs inserted. Any recommendations for a trimmer North, Wangara etc - Cheers
