Swan crabs

Hey guys

Well this time of year i try head out just before xmas (Day or 2) and try pick up a feed of crabs for xmas day.

Usually i head out off mandurah, but from all reports it seems they may not be big enough before xmas.

Drove down the Fwy on the weekend and nocticed boats netting along the fwy.
Just wondering where is a good spot to head, and are they getting any good crabs in the river at the moment.

Saw the report from one of the FW members when they went for a dive, but curious to know if any one been trying the nets?

Cheers

Tailor fillets on toast

is so hard to beat for breakfast!

Summer fishing = tailor

Just remember when fishing for tailor on treacherously shallow in-shore reefs from your boat:

a) 10lb leader is probably a bit under gunned, but if thats all you got go with it and be gentle Tongue out

b) Have enough large jig heads so you can cast at the reef without getting too close

c) Make sure you have enough 4 - 6" paddletail lures. Snapbacks are certainly more durable than anything else I had

d) remeber a landing net as tailor teeth tend to cut through 10lb mono pretty easily when you "leader" them into the boat

e) tell your mate to keep a lid on it and not yell out "yooohooohooo" when he catches them, thereby alerting 52 boats within a 5nm radius to fish next to us on a 30m long reef.

In probably 30 - 45 minutes we hooked about 2 dozen tailor around the 45 - 60cm range between 2 of us and boated 4 through more ass than class. Through a stroke of luck(?) when the armada of boats showed up, the bite had shut down so it didn't seem that appealing a place to fish. When we left, the other boats that showed up quickly followed and tagged along behind us for a while but trying to look like they weren't following us despite looking like a convoy of boats - its amazing how the "sheep" mentality works when one goes the rest follow.....

Nth of 2 Rocks Report - Saturday

Headed out with the dog and 4X4 on the beach north of 2 Rocks. I couldn't sleep so I arrived early about 4am. Perfect morning with low seas.

No early strikes prior to daybreak and no sign of any Tailor either. 7:15am major hookup resulting in nice 5kg plus Mulla. I was stoked.

7:45 and another strike! This fish was serious and I walked up and down the beach for a while and finally bagged another Mulla upwards of 8kg. Needless to say I went home very happy albeit I like my feed of fresh Tailor. The trip home was delayed some 45 minutes due to some serious digging. The beach was a lot softer than it has been over the last few weeks.

I was not able to record images as I left my phone on the breakfast bar at home....Silly me...Frown

KG's Secrets

Went out to a well known whiting haunt,,was bothered by trumperters and blowies,,anyway to avoid them a bit ? i was thinking of maybe throwing some berley in one direction and keep the blowies occupied for a few minutes at a time,,or should i try drifting instead of anchoring ?

Others catch a good feed at the spot,,hopeing to do the same ,anything i am missing ?

Near Tragedy at Quoba

Was speaking to an Ambo mate yesterday, told me they had a callout for a bloke who had gone for an unexpected swim at Quobba

Seems the bloke and his mates were fishing off the lower ledges, with waves coming over about knee deep they would stiffen the legs and keep on fishing, untill one that bit bigger came along and in the drink he went.He managed to get out safely but was cut to ribbons from head to toe from the barnacles and oysters.

Bet he doesn't go down onto the bottom ledge again to be an accident waiting to happen. At least the sea rescue didn't get a call to go looking for him or possibly a body

soft plastic bream

in line with previous discussions about SP I fished the Donnally River down south for bream using soft plastics(SP).

in response to Stevef and till thought I would quickly post a forum.

I was using Slam 3' minnow and managed to land a few bream ranging from 33-38cm.

used the SP on 1/20 TT jig heads mainly concentrating on the deeper sections of the river around/adjacent to rock bars/banks.

no fish caught on bait.

all bream released

no phot'os yet as camera at work and I have been away all week. will post later

Stella or Saltiga

Now i have seen this placed up alot on sites but never with a good solid answer to solve the age old question!

Stella or Saltiga.

The comments that come back are always 'Stellas better!' or 'Go Daiwa'.

I don't want to see that! i want good solid evidence on why the one is better than the other and to specify,

i am talking about the heavier models ie Stella 18000 and 20000 or the dogfight and expedition.

The reason i ask this is because i am trying to work out which one to buy for jigging and popping.

                                                                                                                                                                             Cheers Cen

Sea/Drift Anchor

Hi, Just wondering what length rope people generally think is best for using a drift anchor. I had mine on a fairly short rope, and the bloody thing snapped at the knot last time I was out. I am thinking that a longer rope would end up putting less stress on the anchor and rope.

Any opinions appreciated

Cheers Steve

Deckie Required - Maybe

Hi, I might be in need of a deckie out of Mindarie tomorrow. My regular crew is only a maybe at this stage and if he pulls out I will be looking for someone to tag along. Wont be an all day trip due to arvo commitments, but planning to try out a few plastics and jigs in the deeper water.

Let me know if anyone is interested in coming along if a position becomes available.

Cheers Steve

need help buying rod/reel for augusta

Hey peoples,

This is my first post on here, so please be gentle...

Firstly I don't know the history of fishwrecked but well done to whoever started it and to those who keep it going. I stumbled across it in a google search for Bream fishing!!

I've just returned from a long long stint in the UK (very happy to be home and to see the sun again) and are looking to set myself and the Mrs up nicely with some suitable gear for Augusta. I plan on doing a bit of blackwood river fishing and maybe chasing some salmon when it's around. I'm looking at buying maybe two-three rods/reels to begin with but have no idea what would be a good combination for what's being fished down that way.

I'd really appreciate any help from you peoples. It's like learning to fish all over again!

 Thanks and Cheers

The 5

Anyone been doing any good out on the 5 lately? North, South? Thinking of givin it a nudge tomorrow morning behind GI.

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Junior Landbased competition

Well the junior landbased competition is over and unless there was a later entry I haven't been told about, Flangies has taken first prize with an 18 kg mulloway and Original Teenager 2nd with a 10 kg mulloway.
That was a mighty fine effort guys and you deserved the accolades for the time and efforts you put in to catch some great fish.
Congratulations to all the entrants. Hopefully the competition gave you some impetus to continue to learn more about fishing. Below are some pics of Flangies and OT's great fish.Flangies and OT drop me a PM and I will organise for you to get your prizes.
All the best, Colin Hay

Gravel Patch

Department of Fisheries Southern Bioregions Manager Kevin Donohue said fishing for pink snapper was not allowed in either of the Sounds between 1 October and 31 January each year.

Went for a few squid in the sound yesty evening and noticed about 5 boats on the GP. Now i'm not wanting to create any accusations here, but what would these guys be catching out there besides snapper? Mullas perhaps? What do you do if you "by-catch" some poor snapskis mid spawn? Hmmmmm......one for discussion and perhaps enlightenment (on my part).

Experimenting with singles.. or barbless trebles?

Ok what do you guys think about singles for trolling lures? or would barbless trebles be a better option? Considering this for the fish and fishers safety, also i'm a big fan of catch and release so either of these would make it easier.

Would target species make a difference?

Opinions..

Cheers

day of the submarines

well the day finally came around to head out for a jig with the xzoga boys we got down to east street jetty at 6 when both spess and i looked at each other and both agreed that the day was going to be cancelled due to weather . no sooner had we introduced our selves to all the xzoga/lemax guys we saw the boat cruising up the river. we all borded and headed out . 2 hours later we arived at the south barge with minimal fish showing on the sounder and no fish being hooked in 2 drifts so off to the north barge were we stumbled accross apache charters and a few fish on the sounder. first up was leonard (creater of xzoga/lemax rods) with a nice 25 kgish fish, second drift produced 2 more fish of round the 15 kg mark . after the second drift the skip decided it was still not productive enough and headed for spot X.
45 min later we arived and none of us could have even dreamed about was about to hapen . down the jigs went and all 5 boys were on straight away to unstopable sambos it was incredible that not 1 fish was landed so spess and i got called up to have a crack. i have dropped down in to a hookup straight away to se spess with the same result . i got done over well and truely on pe 6 whislt spess managed to empty his certate completely in seconds what a laugh it was . long story cut short the day was undescribable with xzoga rods blowing us away whilst not even breakiing on a on a large shark dave hooked on, on pe 6 and played with full lock sure put it to the other jig rods i have played with . and a massive thanks to craig and mitch from saltwater charters for providing the best charter i have been on.
brenz
p.s will be plenty of pix when spess jumps on.
