Crabs in Cockburn Sound
Submitted by dodgy on Sun, 2017-01-22 20:32What's the story with Cockburn crabs?
Mate of mine that has come with me a few times loves to dive for crabs. Few spots I've taken him are always outside the sound because of the ban.....
Picks up his own boat last week and takes the family out on Saturday. Lines of pots straight in front of Palm Beach ramp all the way to the causeway.
Got pulled over by Dep of Transport who continued to assure him there was no ban on taking crabs in the sound. The argument went back and forward for a few minutes while they pointed out everybody crabbing from tinnys and all the moored boats with pots hanging off the back.
So he dived and bagged out in 20 mins.
I appreciated that DOT are not fisheries but a bit of cross agency education would definitely not go astray.

Finally, eating some crays!
Submitted by Ashen on Sun, 2017-01-22 20:05 First off, I would like to give a big thank you to Andy (sea-kem) and Jye (Curndog). They heard I haven't had crays for awhile and gave me some for my family. Fken top blokes!! ![]()
Anyway, I was going to do an Asian dish but the missus wanted to grill the crays. When I got home from work today, the missus asked me to relax and she'll prepare dinner. 5 minutes later, she wanted me to cook coz she reckons I'm the better seafood cook. Lol
I kept the dish simple. Melted butter, garlic and cheese. Sprinkled some chopped Vietnamese mint when I plated.

Tasted great!

Submitted by Tbmc on Sun, 2017-01-22 19:09Hi guys
Ive just purchased a furuno 588 with a tm260 and reading the manual and trying the settings it says you cant use the rezboost, bottom discrimination or accu fish if you have the 1kw or 600 watt transducer selected in the settings
Was hoping someone can confirm this is correct or am I wrong, seams very weird that this would be correct
Any info would be appreciated

Western butterfish bag limit?
Submitted by scano on Fri, 2017-01-20 22:05Anyone know if there are size and bag limits on western butterfish?
not wanting to deplete the ocean of them, just looking to keep some for north west baits.
going for a whiting fish tomorrow and usually catch a heap as by catch (normally release them all). Wouldn't mind keeping a couple as baits for fishing the northwest (vac pack some)
cheers

Coral Bay advice
Submitted by steve434 on Fri, 2017-01-20 04:51G'Day all,
I'm heading to Coral Bay in a few months with the boat, missus and kids. I was up there last year for the first time but didn't get much luck. My problem is I'm reluctant to head out too far with the kids on board (3 under 5). Can anybody offer any advice or some areas to start looking not too far out past the reef (or PM some spots if you're feeling charitable...hey I can only ask and hope). I have been told once before that you can find some fish on some lumps in the Bateman Bay area near the north passage, has anybody ever given it a crack here?
Cheers
Steve

Fishing Rod Advice
Submitted by TJ on Thu, 2017-01-19 15:29Hi good people of FW.
We're heading up to Exxy later this year, and I'm looking for a rod that I can use for Queenies, Spanglies and Trevors, but also have a sporting chance on fun sized GT's. I want something light that I can cast all day, maybe around the 7-8 foot mark so I can use it from boat and shore. Probably casting slices, poppers, plastics and baits. Thinking of pairing it up with a Spheros SW 8000 or 10000, maybe with 20kg braid. I've got rods up to 10kg covered, so was looking for something around the 10-20kg mark.
Probably prefer a 2 piece, but not essential.
Thanks.

Mandurah Artificial Reef
Submitted by dragrush on Tue, 2017-01-17 20:31
Hi all ----- Last weekend , I tried to find the new reef off Mandurah but had no luck as my GPS was not easy to read and the Recfish coordinates were in decimal degress so maybe my conversion was a bit off. I also found it to be a bit far out as I rarely go beyond the 5 fathom Bank reef. Just wondering if anyone else has been there and how is the fishing there. Does it look promising ???

Urgent Outboard Help needed
Submitted by Superfish on Mon, 2017-01-16 15:40Mate has a VRO 1989 V4 115HP Outboard that is taking up to 15 or twenty times to start when cold first start in the mornings. If you give it two much manual choke and over rev it when cold an audio alarm comes up. After we get the motor going it runs like dream and normaly starts fine for the rest of the day. It has us both scrating our heads as to how we can fix this annoying problem. Mate has googled before and some guys said to disconnect the oil injection and go back to pre mixing but we both thuoght that was to radiclal and could damage the engine.
Any help would be awsome thank i am sure my mate would donate a carton of piss for someone who can help fix.
Thanks again Greg

Do other states have fish ruler stickers
Submitted by Comrad on Mon, 2017-01-16 12:11Hello All,
I've been watching a fair few Australian fishing videos on Youtube lately (often east coast), and I notice people are always using brag mats, rulers, etc... to measure fish, but I never see them using a fisheries ruler sticker. Does anyone know if the stickers are just a Western Australian thing? I love the stickers, and find them so useful, I'm surprised I never see them in any videos.

Newbie seeking help with Whiting in Cockburn Sound
Submitted by stumpie on Mon, 2017-01-16 07:43Hi Guys
I'm fairly new with fishing in the sound and still learning.
I've caught squid and herring from a boat around success bank, parmelia bank, carnac etc but each time we try and fish for whiting in these areas in the sand banks all we get are blowies and trumpeters. I use a pre-made whiting rig and squid for bait with very little luck.
Wondering if the more experienced fishos here can offer some advice.
Thanks in advance.
