2017 MAAC Bluewater Classic

2017 Bluewater classic, 18th of Feb. any interest in this from people on here? i know theres been a few threads the last few years about it on here.

This will be my second bluewater in a row, did terribly last time, but still had fun, love the social aspect of it. Taking it on this year with new boat, new electronics, and hoping for the weather to be as good as it was last year.

Monkey Mia Dolphins Memories

Hi all
A little trip down memory lane. Saw that Piccolo had a calf on the PerthNow site. That had me looking at the visiting dolphins and I noticed Nicky's name wasn't up there anymore.
Researched a little further and sadly discovered that she had died probably.
Now the memories of this very naughty dolphin. During the early days it was not unusual to feed them buckets off fish until CALM started controlling it after it was discovered that we were in fact harming the dolphins like Holey Fin, her daughter Nicky etc. Well Nicky never fully learned how to forget those "good" times.
Every time I have been back to Monkey Mia sitting for a fish and beer on the beach (ie not really trying to catch much just chilling) she would come right up to the shore with that "please feed me look".
I have been there multiple times and she never missed once to come up when we fished. I found that amazing and spoke to the rangers and researchers about it about 5 yrs ago.
I arrived in Oz aged 12, and every year until I was about 25yo we holidayed for 2 weeks there, and some off those years was the over feed ones. The Rangers but especially the Researcher (a USA professor) told me that it was probably a memory and that she could recognise faces (probably) and try and beg for food from faces she has seen before, and that use to feed her the loads of fish. I was blown away by this and she certainly became my favourite.
So I was sad to learn that she passed away, but it brought up so many memories of the times there.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this. I know RandallDF goes there now much more often than I do.
Just interested!

Rippa Gauges/Fisheries research officer

Eventful morning. Research officer using plastic vernier gauges to measure crays, lools up and states one is undersize, grabs my rippa gauge to prove it..... research officer didnt realise i had previously checked my gauge before using it. Gauge was .87mm oversize. I only use it for opening the fuel cap on boat. He walks back to car to get his so called fancy verniers. Comes back. Measures cray and what do you know its 76.46mm i then produce my trusty BCF gauge and told him thats what i use to measure crays with. We check the rest of the crays as i wright down the measurements he is calling out for his research paper. Then research officer states that his plastic verniers are .5mm out. Anyway he went on his merry way happy with his work. I lost 20 minutes of my life

just a reminder to everyone to check these gauges. I used moore & wright verniers. Dont use shit plastic ones

Punching in waypoints??

Hi guys. I've been given a few waypoints (lucky me) to try out when i get the chance.

Quick question.....for example if i was given the mark.

32.99.99  115.99.99

SHOULD i be punching in 32.99.990  115.99.990

Or 32.99.099  115.99.099

Yep probably a stupid question for most.

Thanks in advance guys.

Squid Size Question

Hi all,

Quick question on how everyone was doing with their squid catches? I've been doing well in the sound number wise but my biggest hood over summer is 25cm.  In autumn and winter I was finding them a lot bigger 30cm to 34cm hood length, is this due to the life cycle/stage of life that all the squid are at??

Anyone finding bigger size Squid around??

Tarpon adventure to Nicaragua for 2018! *discounted spots available*

One fish that has been right up the top of my hit list for some time now is a big 'casting lure caught' Tarpon. To make that happen, I am putting together a trip to the Tarpon mecca of Nicaragua, to a very remote lodge only accessible by charter plane.

We have a number of anglers confirmed for the trip already, but we still have some space available if anyone is keen to get on board.

To get to this fishery, we need to arrive at San Jose in Costa Rica. After this we take a charter plane which will be arranged to take us direct to the lodge in Nicaragua. The Nicaraguan visa will be arranged for us at the lodge.

We will then have 7 full days of fishing and for this there are two main options 1) focus nearer to the sea and river mouth casting the heavier lures for giant Tarpon (up to 220lb+) as well as Snook, Sails, Snapper, Jacks and much more and 2) going further up river on the lighter lures chasing other species including trophy size Rainbow bass and Snook.

We are fishing only 2 people per spacious 25ft boat, and groups are free to choose on a given day whether they want to fish the sea/rivermouth or up river.

Accommodation is a very luxurious lodge with top class food, free open bar, pool etc. You will not be without comfort!

We have booked very early and so have managed to secure the week with the best moon phase on the best month of the year for big fish, so I'm sure it is going to be an awesome trip.

Exact details as follows:

5 October 2018, arrive in San Jose, accommodation twin share

6 October (morning) take an early charter flight (included in the trip price) to the airstrip near the lodge, then a 1km boat transfer to the lodge – then begin fishing immediately

7 full days of fishing, ending in the evening on Friday 12 October

Overnight accommodation at the lodge on Friday 12th, then take another charter flight (included) back to San Jose on the 13th in time to meet your connecting flight.

Trip includes charter flight, accommodation, 7 full days fishing, meals/drinks and all equipment (if you choose not to bring your own).

If you are keen to join or want pricing or any more information, drop me a message or email.

Cheers

Dan

Swan and Shark Bay blueys

headed to Denham and the surrounds over the Xmas period. the wind was howling 24 hours a day for 9 days, then calm the day before we left. still managed to get out and about, including a great day 4x4 up to Cape Peron...what an awesome part of the world that place is.

due to wind, the fishing was basically non existent, however managed a good feed of crabs near Monkey Mia.

on sunday, we hit our honey hole in the Swan to bag out on some big boys. biggest went 175mm across carapace.

Now that's a crab.....Kirkeness northern Norway

We went crabbing today at 1pm, it was already dark!  Only three hours of real daylight today despite crystal clear skies and minus 20C.

Fished from snow mobiles travelling over a frozen fjord, large square cut in the ice and crab nets dropped this morning by the guide who took us out....the catch, 13 or 14 king crab, we only took five to feed the ten people on the trip and even then there was heaps left over.  Steamed fresh they were absolutely stunning, sweet, full of meat and a meal fit for a king.    Add this one to your bucket list.

By way of interest this crab was never a native of the fjords but were introduced by the Russians in the 70's, they now threaten the native cod fishery so are actively hunted.

Steep Point

Hi and Happy New Year Fishwreckers. Hope all had a good relaxing break with families.

We are heading up around the 13th with a couple of tinnies and fly nets. Lol

A legacy from last time we were there in April, so its May this year & hoping we dont have to live through that again.

Overhead or Eggbeater Reels?

Need a new heavy duty reel for big pelagics, deep drop and balloning $400 limit. Any advise much appreciared

night crabbing

what is the consensus on drop netting from the boat at night in the swan for crabs. Would it be worth it or do they bury at night and only feed/move at dawn and dusk. Seen plenty night diving years ago. Being  a shift worker it would be easier to go overnight chasing them than early am with the 400 other boats already out there

Redfin bycatch

Went down to harvey dam today to chase redfin with no luck so decided to have a crack off the main road in the harvey river. To my surprise it was full of goldfish? I knew the collie river had them but didn't think harvey did. We caught a handful on bread to have a better look, they were gold, red, black etc. Was pretty unimpressed to say the least.

After this we tried a new spot on another river a bit closer to home but still no redfin, although I did get a nicer surprise at this spot. A healthy rainbow that fought very well for its size.

I would rather a nice reddy but there's always next time

Jurien Landbased

Hi All!

I'm taking my daughters up to Jurien for a bit of father / daughter time this weekend and want to have a crack at the beaches for herring / whiting. Anyone know if the main beach (north end) will fish ok for these?

Also love to know if it's worth throwing the crab nets off the jetty?

I might head down on sunset with the kids and a few beers to try for tailor also if you think it's worth it?

Any help or tips greatly appriciated!

Ice fishing in northern Lapland

Lake Inari, first auger the hole, drop spoon with artificial maggots on hook hanging a few centimetres below and jig.......no we didn't actually land anything, I lost a hook to a northern pike and Jen lost a small Redfin....but hell it was fun snowmobiling to the location over miles of frozen lake.

Navionics upgrade is it worth it?

Is it worth paying the 180ish dollars to upgrade my 3 year old old card to navionics + ? Do you see more contours etc in areas of water 20m+ deep?

Shark bay boat fishing

Hey guys heading to shark bay in July due to good school report. Have a couple of questions as basically blind to this area. Thanks for info and if anyone's chasing help of Augusta and Albany I could point them in the right direction.

South passage: we have a 23 foot walk around and it looks like south passage is approx 50 k's from Denham. We have heard of some excellent fishing but is there anything we should know about navigating the channel there.is it worth trolling through the passage or when you reach steep point.

monkey Mia: I have been pointed in the right direction for some good ground of monkey Mia buy forum member Randal however there is a snapper ban in place when we are up there. Is there much variety other than snapper baldiea ect. Or are we better of launching from Denham

dehnam: where are we best fishing from Denham have heard bent pin is just full of truckloads of undersized pinkies and not worth fishing so kind of blind to this area.

Fishing help

 Hi all,

lets start this off by stating I am NOT looking for peoples locations or GPS spots!!

that out of the way...

I have been fishing here here in Perth for almost 3 years out of the Cockburn sound and city side of rotto with little to no luck.

I have done a vast amount of fishing but am struggling to find any real structure here in WA with the waters being so vast. Burley seems to just bring in sharks and same with live bait. I have tried squid soft plastics, mullies.

Am I stupidly missing something or is it all part of the chase in the vast area off the cost here

Thanks for your help

Matt

Black drummer in wa taste GOOOD!

Hi all, so I went to Margaret river for a holiday and decided to do some fishing. After maping some fishing spots I went off to fish. I ended up getting 2 black drummers (western rock blackfish) which is a first for me, a tarwhine and 2 herring. I kept the black drummer as I wanted a big feed:) and was curious about how they tasted. I have herd mixed opinions about these fish usually either people like them or there just "ok". Well upon gutting them I noticed there was no bad smell, at all? Fish like tarwhine and skippy have a VERY bad smell when gutting so I expected this drummer to as well, but I was surprised! Then after filleting I noticed they had very nice white translucent flesh, again no bad smells. The fish were bled and gilled on capture. Anyway after cooking just in a pan with oil and some onion I was very surprised! No fishy taste, nice sweet white flaky meat and far out shined the herring and tarwhine I ate with it! Infact, I catch a lot of king George whiting and I'd go as far as saying the drummer tastes THE SAME!!! Both in texture and taste, there nearly identical! And u don't get that sorta grose feeling after eating to much fish either(I get this some times:(. So with them being great to eat, and one of the hardest fighters out there, why does no one go for them here? Easterners go crazy for them, and we seem to not even know they exist! Any way I thought I'd share my findings and I'm very keen to get some more in the future! Cheers.
