in close fish with a good mixed bag

had a good morning in real close with heaps of action

Little feed

good day out only spent an hour out on the water got the little tuna a the dhui before the wind picked up. Then spent an hour in the estuary for the 18 crabs.

Nice little Blue from Esperance

Caught this nice WBG on Wednesday at one of my fav fishing spots, east of town. Sight casted a rock crab onto his nose and it was all too easy on my 9 wrap Snyder and trusty Spinfisher, drag nearly locked up. Good thing was I caught same size one 2 years ago in the same spot.

Sw deep drop

Had a good run down south last weekend. Ran the net Friday night for our limit of fresh mullet an hit the water early straight to the shelf! Had a few drifts before we got our first fish but then they came on thick an fast. I think the tide was keeping them quiet. Turned out a few puka, blue eye an bass grouper. Both boats bagged out

First fish on plastics in W.A

Headed out sunday morning for my first fish of the year. Went out from hilarys left the ramp at around 5ish.

Sounded around north of rotto for a bit found some okayish ground. Dropped the baits down nothing but wrasse. Moved a bit deeper done a few drifts, picked up a black arse and a mate picked up a baldie ( no photo's sorry!) Got the shits with pulling up nothing but wrasse. So decided to give plastics ago. Have been using plastics for years back home in brisbane for flathead. Picked up some "pacific pearl" squidgy flick baits from compleat angler nedlands (I love that place, bank account not so much) only because I was reading a fishing mag at work last week and remember seeing them and thought, yeah why not.

Grabbed my stradic 2500 spooled with .8 varivas and 20 pound leader on a strudwick sic stick 2-5kg.  First drop down few winds and bang i was on! It had a run straight to the boat and I dropped it. Pulled it up to make sure it was still there, dropped back down, few winds again and bang of it goes again! pulled it up from 40M and up came a skippy. Stoked! Not at a skippy but I actually pulled something up with a placcy. 20mins later and a captain morgan or 2 down and bang on again. Not much fight but felt a bit heavier and first dhu! Beauty. Not size so it doesn't count I know but stoked it was working for dhu. Measured in at 40 or so and safely released.

Moved to another spot another morgan down and bang on again bit more weight this time and another dhu! Again not size at around 45cm or so, another safe release.

Not alot of fish, still newish to over here so trying to find ground. But was still a good day. I caught a few fish on placcys and dodged all the wrasse haha! Safe to say I'm hooked on plastics! Might have to dust off the Ci4 4000 and find a nice rod for it so I don't kill the 2500. Hopefully next time I can pick up a size dhu!

My first crack at write up so hopefully I didn't do to bad!

Cheers zac

Albany for two weeks btw its going of

i haven't been posting much for ages but felt like putting up a lil post from the last trip

:)

The Mrs first shark

Gday - the Mrs landed her first shark on 10kg. Made run after run before she got it to the boat, then I took over cause she was scared to be near it - he was not a very happy little hammer head when he was in the boat - happy to say he released well and is still swimming around in the 37m line west of mindarie

First Sambo

So, headed out with a mate from Hillarys targeting whiting and ended up with this! Got to the ramp around 8am as the easterly was up a bit. Logged on as we left the marina and received a little warning from the volunteer sea rescue that the winds were pretty strong where we were headed. Got to the first spot, drift was a bit quick and caught a yakka and small sand whiting. Kept moving about trying a variety of spots and only ended up with a couple of undersized flathead, returned safely. We moved to some broken ground on the 3 mile, burleyed up and could still only manage a couple if wrasse. I'd kept the yakka swimming nicely and hooked him up as a livey which converted into my first ever sambo. We were in 13m and had full drag on my Penn fathom overhead with 50lb braid and 80lb leader. It stripped line off and I was worried it would bust me off on the reef, but after a surprisingly short fight, got it boat side and then over the rail. Not sure of size but it was the biggest I had ever caught, being my first. It swam away strongly as I had heard they weren't too good to eat at this size. Pretty happy with the result anyway.

PB Pinkie last night!

 Hi Guys,

Went out last night with the brother in law after work for a snapper sesh on the FFB. Had only been on the spot probably half an hour when a new pb snapper took an unwaited Mulie.

I was pretty stoked to say the least with this fish. But bigger and better was to come. Reset the floater and kept chucking a SP around. Flicked it out the back of the boat and as it was still sinking it got whacked by this brute!!

Was a night to remember. We weighed the big boy on bathroom scales and it came in at about 9.5kg, we thought it may of gone more than that but no complaints here, still smiling. now.

SW marron

a few from down south before xmas. private dam bounty

bad weather shallow swim

good old pete done real well ,my dan very good ,very very shallow ,3,5 to 4.8 meters, almost felt bad.,to easy on tanks.good news few whites plenty of soft shells .2nd run soon to happen ,got some great footage from today dont know how to put up.,dan has his head set really good know.

first metro mackie for the season

with an early start on the cards myself and forum member nelly decided to have another crack at some metro pelajics on surface again. after a short trip we arrived at the spots I have been finding the amberjack and tuna in the previouse weeks . we were greeted with little light , sw chop and somewhat foggy conditions. after looking around for no more than 10 mins a school popped up right infront of us and neil and i launched a s.s.m and the trusty monsoon breaker stickbaits straight into the school with an immediate explosive hookup's , unfortunately for neil dropped his almost straight up loosing stickbait and all and mine was hooked up still strong and solid.. after a short battle and some blistering runs the fish took shape and up came my first surface Mackie for the season (granted its a sharkie and not a spaniard but atleast it was solid one at that)!
once again it was the s.s.m and zipbait monsoon breakers doing damage (granted we didn't use any others)
cheers brenz

New Years Day Feed

G'day all, behaved ourselves on new years eve so we managed to hit the water at a reasonable hour on  new years day with a clear head. The breeze was forecast to come up a bit around lunchtime, so we headed out behind Carnac Island. Tried a bit of trolling to get some herring for livies on the way out but very little action, so we proceeded out to the bank and found a nice looking patch of ground and dropped the baits down. Wasn't long before the first blackarse was on the deck, a feisty specimen of around 12cm in length (not sure if that's a FW record for the smallest blackarse to ever swallow a 4/0 hook?) Quckly returned to hopefully come back in a few years time.

Pretty soon the decky was adding to the burley (conditions were excellent, he is just soft as) and I managed a couple of nice blackarse around the 35-38cm mark, and a good size skippy. The deckie was spewing with increasing frequency and was considering invoking the mercy rule (knowing full well that he would have to forever wear the "panties of shame") until something put a nice bend in his little spin outfit. A brief struggle later and a small 50cm YTK was on board for a quick photo before swimming away strongly. The decky now reckoned he was feeling much better. Decided to head back in as the girls back home were getting impatient, and the breeze had just shifted around. Stopped at GI for a quick visit, and then headed back to the ramp. This is where the fun started!

For some reason, instead of launching at the usual ramps, we thought we would give Wells park a go. No problems for the launch (except for the numpty land based fishers who insist in parking their cars ON THE RAMP, not in the carpark 20m away - GRRRR!) but the retrieve was something else. The SW wind had fairly come up by now and the trip in from GI was fairly slow & bumpy. Got to the ramp (for those who are not familiar, it's an old concrete ramp with potholes, no jetty and it faces straight into a SW breeze, with no protection) and there was even more numpties parked at the top of the ramp! The waves and wind were making it quite tricky, so had to drop the decky off in deep water to fetch the trailer. As he's off getting the car, I'm thinking "we should head round to palm beach, cos this is nuts in this wind & chop". Eventually the parked cars are avoided and the trailer is on the ramp, I line up the boat and hope for the best. Decky catches the bow, hooks on the the strap and starts winching like crazy, I'm over the side keeping the back end straight, and 30 seconds later the car is heading back up the ramp. We both looked at each other in amazement, not believeing that it didn't go pear shaped. One last manouver past the numpty brigade and we were on our way home.

Fillets went down a treat for dinner that night, and great memories of the retrieve that could have gone so wrong, but didn't. Don't think I'll use that ramp again in summer...

Thanks for reading,

BD.

First Mulloway; All class or arse, you decide.

With no boat to head out on anymore and the weather for yesterday evening looking primo I made a late arvo decision to try my luck at catching my first beach mulla. Having not beach fished with baits and long rods for at least 4 years I quickly shot out to Compleat Angler Rockingham for some tackle and bait. The staff helped me out with rigs and I left the store with somewhat of an idea of what to do.

As we left for the coast I still had no idea what beach we were even going to fish at, absolutely no thought was even put into what I was doing as it was such a last minute decision to head out. We pulled up at a pathway over the dunes and we setup right in front. First couple of baits were smashed by tailor and a couple of my rigs bitten off too then I got a herring on the flicky and that went back out in half on the bigger rod. Kept fishing with the flicky hoping for a big whiting for a bait for my brother when I noticed the tip of the big rod slightly bouncing in the rod holder, tap tap tap tap... I ran over and picked up the rod and held it for a bit feeling the tap tap tap. I slowly put some tension on the line and came up solid so struck hard and the reel came to life. The fish was zig zagging just under the breakers, I called it for a big tailor then the fish took off up the beach.

The ticker was starting to beat a bit harder by this stage, but the last thing I wanted to do was rush it and pull the hooks so just let whatever it was on the end of my line play out just behind the breakers. As we got it infront of the breakers I started saying that it could be a ray or shovelnose just to keep me level-headed but deep inside I was hoping for a mulla. Cody ran back to where we had setup to grab the gaff and thats when the fishes tail come out the water and I noticed the yellow tinge of a translucent tail, this was no shark or ray! It took 2 waves for the fish to wash up on the sand where Cody was waiting with the gaff where he pinned it in the jaw and dragged it up the sand. It wasnt until I picked the fish up that I realised it wasnt just a soapie, but a fair lump of silver sheen!

After a few quick photos I jumped in the water with her and walked out to chest deep water, copping waves on the head. It was all worth it when with one big thump of the tail she cruised out of my hands back into the big blue.

Bloody hell. Ive caught one, ive caught one on my very first attempt at targetting one! I just kept telling Cody that this just doesnt happen, not on your first go. It was all the stories of guys putting in hundreds of hours and still no glory that had put me off this whole time. People say "the first one is the hardest, it gets easier from there," I had been on that beach for one hour!!

Still cant believe it really, I can finally say I have caught a fish of a lifetime.
Stoked!

Quick scoop on the blues

Tried our luck on a few bluey's this morning, suprised to get so many in such small amount of time, could have easily hung around to get rest of quota but thought what we had was heaps enough for a good feed, nice and full of meat and clean too.

Couple of Bangas

Quick drift over some soft coral ground we have marked, bang bang 15.5 and 14.5 kegas and on the way home. 2 others boated the same drift around 10 keg mark and were returned to the bottom fighting fit.

Cape Nat Dhu

Well after coming up short on the dhu's in the usual haunts off Gracetown (sizeable ones anyway), I had a crack off Cape Nat (maybe my fourth trip off nato in 2 years). I managed to find some new ground north and pulled in a big breaksea and dhu about 700mm. On the way back in from that trip I drove over some likely looking ground that I would hit up on the next trip out.

With the brother down and the wind suppose to be playing ball we headed out. Rough as guts early so stopped in at eagle bay and got some squid to kill some time, waiting to see if the wind would drop. Wind dropped marginally and managed to putt our way out, hitting up a few spots on the way. A couple of small pinkies and a flatty later we arrived. One drift later and the photos really tell the rest...

Me and the big buck (PB). 950mm

The catch.

Bro with both.

Quick swim

went for a dive in the 30s with Dan and John

Another quick reef fish

Another quick reef fish with a couple of mate this morning resulted in about 23 Tailor, 2 Mulloway 600 & 800 and a few other odds n sods

Up they come

Few pics from last couple days on the water, plenty of big spiders around, we had the choice to size our quota and return the smaller ones before we come up on both days.  Heaps of dhu in real close too, cn 6 fish all over 8 kegs one dive in 9m of water. Old mate mr blue hung with us for a good 20 mins before he ate the straight hook. Some dhu were from the rod aswell. And yes one of the 3 dhus was released straight after the photo, 3 nice ones over the side on one drift doesnt happen everyday.

big boy

up there in the size, new ground, blows my 3.8 kilo one on wall to bits,

I just love this place called home!

Looking back 2014 was a cracking year on the water. I probably should never complain! Perth has to be the best place in the world.  2015 is going to be even bigger and just maybe I'll boat that elusive swordfish.

Here's a few pics of last year which were on the phone.

Hope you all have great year ahead

New Tub, First Blood

Invested in an upgrade from a 5.2 Savage to the 6.2m. Lovely boat, joy to drive even in the rough.

Slow start with a few baldies, KGs and breaksea and a southern blue fin. but finished off the day with a 15kg big buck. Lost it first drift, and 3rd attempt re-hooked the same fish with the previous rig in its mouth....stupid fish. :p

Video of the dhuey surfacing and being boated is here: youtu.be/-z5ZTG-OsPU

Finally a snapper!

my first  dont know what else to say I'm still in shock haha... I was starting to believe these don't exist

was a quick fish with a mate last Saturday on the back of the 5 out from Rockingham. She went 750mm

Early Squid in the Sound

headed out from woodies point around 5am this morning back at the ramp by 10 had to cover abit of ground to find them nothing massive but still a good feed

ambers on surface part 2

Once again managed get out in Brett bream punt to nail more ambers on the surface . Had 4 absolute smokings on the zipbaits monsoon breakers wich were unstoppable on 20lb end result was 4 lost lures, still landed a good amount of fish tho ! good morning out with good company showing that great fish can be landed by small boats

Cray-zee

.

big day on the blue!

With the 3.8 mt tinny in tow it was metro tuna that were the target for this morning ....
got to the ramp at 5 and were on the selected location by 530. quick sorting of the tinny saw us ready to go, almost straight away there was an eruption on the surface , so brett armed with a zipbaits monsoon breaker stickbait shot it straight into the disturbance and before one rotation of the handle was complete all hell broke loose ! first cast of the day and tuna landed... essentially this lasted the whole morning with bait and bust ups everywhere and in every direction ... ended up landing bulk tuna , amberjacks and tailor all on surface gear which kept us well entertained. Also managed to be graced with the presence of an overly large shark that was easily over the length of the tinny!
all day the monsoon breakers were the unstoppable lure with many other brands not even getting a look in !
all in all a top fun action packed day which entailed a large restock of lures ready for the next trip

My new boat

Hi All

Thought I would show off my new boat. Good tub with notmany hours on it, but hoping to change that over the next few months.

Had it a few weeks now and gaining a bit more confidence and getting to know it more each time I go out.

Really tested it on Friday, heading out for a bottom bouce, chased some tuna the other side of rotto and got smashed by some sambos out deep which were unstoppable! Good times!

Couple of photos attached of what we have caught so far!

If you see me out and about come and say hello!
