With the fishing gods finally smiling upon us, I was fortunate enough to be able to get out from Two rocks with Ryan Thipthorp on Sunday and hit up the 40m mark. The call for the day was to fish with artificals only with no bait to be taken out, and after carefull consultation with Ryan (what do you reckon about this colour?  Yeh mate she'll be alright!) we concurred and sent down our McArty soft plastics into the briney deep ( I was using a 7in Bullhead in orange/yellow pattern and Ryan choosing a Chartruse pearl bullhead, jig heads were 1 to 1 1/2 oz).

With a gentleman hours start to the boat ramp we launch around the 10.00am mark and headed out to the first spot. First few drift didn't produce alot with Ryan nailing an undersize Dhui which was released well to fight another day successfully. A quick move saw us droppping on ground wwith Ryan's fateful words " this looks like the type of ground that I usually pick up Dhui's in the 10-15kg range. Softies down, jig jig jig bang Ryan's on ...... result 15kg of prime table fish. Next drift same result but this time it was yours truly who was the lucky angler...10kg Dhu to the account. This pretty much set the tone for the day with numerous moves and a bite that I have never experienced before.

The soft plastics were being absolutly smashed by the Dhuies with them being taken well down in the mouth. All up we probably fished 4 hours with a tally of around 12-15 Dhuies with 2 being kept. Best results were Ryan 7 & 15 kg Dhu on soft plastic, me 5 & 10kg dhu on soft plastic. With the rest  of the fish either just under ranging up to the big bugger Ryan nailed. Biggest problem was we were unable to get away from Dhuies......some problem hey! Thanks must go to Ryan for a fantastic day out (if you really want to gain more knowledge about fishing, you must give Ryan a call about his fishing tuitions, just have to put up with the bugger being smug when he gets it right!!!!!! NO PROBLEMS LOL. Only JUST found the pic on my computer. Before i went all out with my popper stopper and Saragosa 18000F I invested in a beach set up from Oceanside which cost me 150 bucks? best money i ever spent!

not a bad big boy!  not sure on the weight but i can dead lift 120kg's and i needed help to  pick this baby up........ and im 115kg's myself and 6ft3 i think this shovel nose i named "george" was longer then me LOL just wish i had taken a pic of the ray i pulled up the other morning was about 3x times the size of this!

sat avo was looking great so gave my mate clint a call and it was on. the plan was to finish work at 1230 boat in the water at 230 fish for squid for a couple of hours then nail some snapper. so everything went to plan time wise headed out of the marina found some nice squidding grounds and set the drift . to my shock within about 15 min max we had our quota , hmmmm what to do now i thought i know give the 4lb a flogging on the skippy . so rigged the placcys drifted over a few lumps getting gippy after gippy on placcys til round 5 ish when we decided to hit the lumps for some snapper. got to the spot burleyd up saw the fish on the sounder and 2 casts later had my 2 fish with only 1 license on board we were done so we just kept on the snapper till sundown one after the other from 42 to over legal . was a great avo with great conditions and the 12 ft tinny found the fish again. pik of snapper was the smaller of the 2 kept the bigger of the 2 had blood on the side of the fish not making a very pretty pik

Went out for a fish on Saturday and caught this brute.

Lost two others. One decided to head for the horizon and the fight ended when it found some reef. The other one nearly sent my Stella outfit overboard. My missus yelled that I had a fish on and by the time I looked up the rod holder had exploded into pieces. I dived across the boat and grabbed the rod butt just as it was about to go over and just held on for dear life. Luckily the line was being dragged across the outboard so it snapped. I don't know how long I could have held on as I was lying across my eski and burley bucket, it was quite an awkward position to fight a fish. 

So only one fish out of three runs but still some excitement for the day.

This fish had a tag in it. What is the procedure when catching a fish with a tag? Does the number on it need to be given to anyone?

PS. I didn't catch this on the rod in the pic.

We went out on whitey's boat he run's the seasport tackle shop in jurien bay.He landed us on to these beauties.A great day with great service rewarded us with these dhufish and snapper along with various other sizes and species.Including sum yellowtail kingfish and tuna that were caught trolling on the way back.Previous trips have provided us with metre+ mulloway and sharks and big baldchin groper and breaksea cod.even sambo's 17 kg+ for a great fight.He sure know's what he's doing.We Strongly reccomend u go out on this charter.Seasport tackle jurien.these photo's were taken round june/july.

Well based upon the discussion last week I decided to put my skills to the test with some down south fisho's that had little idea about the Exmouth area.  We cancelled the first fishing session due to it being blown out and went the l/b option instead, within 20 minutes we had an octopus landed and a small golden trevally just after.  We called it quits after that as it was high tide and I wanted the octopus live to become our new research project at work.  For John it was his first fish of the trip after being out in the boat 3 times. (They had hooked fish but always seemed to lose them)

Saturday morning was blown out so we decided to head out around 1.30pm, just to give the guys a bit of a heads up on what to fish for where and how.  Heading to the spot I saw one of the biggest tuna/bird schools I've seen in Exmouth and decided we'd do one quick troll around to see what we could find.  I kid you not it took less than 30 seconds to have a solid hookup that wasn't stopping and ending up toweling John up and left him fishless again.  Now in the chaos of winding in lines and clearing the spread I noticed the technique John was using was one that ultimately cost him the fish.  Do you think its better to tell people these things or just let them go on how they normally do it without potentially embarrassing them?  The fish was probably a very solid spaniard.

At the spot I showed the guys what to do and what to expect, luckily for me first drop resulted in a nice 65cm trout that got smashed by a big cod on the way up and was luckily spat out.  There were a couple of other small fish hooked but they got codded and it was time to move.  Heading out deep we tried a few spots for not much luck, lots on the sounder which resulted in a couple of pan snapper and NW blowies!  The drift really was too fast out there though so after half an hour we changed plans and put out the trolling gear.

Within 20 minutes of the marlin gear being out a decent black jumped out of the water like a dolphin and hit the shotgun lure twice.  I turned to give him some clear water and a look at the others and he came and hit the short corner and then the left middle all fired up and zipping drag all over the shot.  It turned out not to be as he took one last whack and buzzed off without a hookup. :(  We gave it another hour but that was it for the arvo and we got in just before the tide would make tantas difficult to retrieve and before the other handful of boats out there braving it.

So for 4 hours fishing the guys learnt how to shallow water trout/spangly fish, what to look for out deep ground wise and what rigs to use and the basics of billfishing.   We also lost/got unlucky with 2 fish that would have made the trip, but thats fishing.  These guys aren't muppets either, I've attached a pic of what they get down in their neck of the woods, but when it comes to the north, well its almost a different country.  I'm looking to go out next weekend again to see what they've learnt, but from all accounts, they would have been very happy customers. ;)

Well what can I say! We woke this morning to a gentle eastly blowing at 5am. Claire went to work, and I headed back to bed. It was hard to go back to sleep knowing the fishing conditions were great on the water. Well, I finally got up and 10am and there was still a gentle eastly blowing. So I rang Claire and asked her if she was keen for a quick fish after work..."Of Course" she said.

I picked Claire up at work at 1610, we hooked the boat up and left the boat ramp at 1630. We then travelled to our spot which took us 20 mins. We had hooks baited and went for our first drift over this tiny lump I had found last trip. Claire was on straight away, a good fish and made her work hard to get him up. It turned out to be a golden trev around 60cm. Just as it got to the surface it jumped and so did a shark, and just about landed in the Traily! Claire asked me what we should do if one landed in the boat?? I said.... just get up the front of the boat!

Anyway she baited up and sent her bait to the bottom. Bang she was on again and landed a nice Golden Snapper around 55cm. She was happy, as it was the first one she has caught.

After Claire's arms stopped shaking, we headed for another drift. This time it was Wade's turn!

After some great rod work by myself I to had a nice Goldy on board as well.....cant have the Mrs showing me up can i Russ!

We were more than happy with what we had caught in 10 mins of fishing and decided to have one more drift on another spot 200m away, where we usually catch Saddle Tail. This time we both hooked up, and we had fun trying not to let our braid rub thru on each other. We then boated another 2 Golden Snapper...we couldnt get away from the buggers!

I took a look at my watch and it was 1710. I said to Claire " I think its time to head home" as we had a caught our share of fish for the day, and we didnt want to rape our new mark.....GOLDYSPOT01.  It was the best 20 min  fishing session I have ever had...and after a high five with the Mrs we headed home. Got back to the ramp at 1730, then waited for ET's fishing guides to drive their boat on the trailer. After about 10 attempts..they finally got it...I had to hold back from clapping I tell ya!

We had another great day on the water (well 1 hour really), and the boat is still hooked up to the 4wd in the back yard...as I'm thinking why not go fishing tommorw morning!

Went out for a fish last Sunday the wind and current weren't the best but I still decided to twitch a plastic around some shallow reefy/coral rising up from 16 m - 9 m, last drift of the day I nailed this 15 - 16 kg Male Dhu on a 6 inch plastic right on the front edge of the lump. The gear i was using was a Stella 3000 fd running PE 1.5 with an 3 - 6 kg Ian Miller T Curve. Smoked me on the first run I called it for a Sambo the way it peeled off time and time again, after 2 or 3 mins I had it turned and started the old up and down slug fest reveiling it's true identity great fight on the light string and stoked with my biggest Dhu to date especially on a plastic and light spin.

Icaught this 104 cm snapper on the 3 mile off Scarborough yesterday, it took some stopping in 10 m of water on my stella 4000 and 20lb saltiga braid, we released 4 other pinks around 5/6 kg and caught a heap of 1.5/2.5 kg skippy on plastics and 6 lb braid it was a top day!!!

Well after not having a fish for 24 hours, it was time to get out and wet a line. With nothing out for tea, i was seeking some fresh fish.

With a light eastly blowing and high tide around lunch time, it was looking great for fishing. Loaded up the old navara, and headed down to the resort, where ET used to run his fishing charters out of. There is a nice beach along the front of the resort, and rocks out about 30 m all along the beach. But the only thing about fishing there, one must watch for the snapping handbags, as a big boy was seen there a few weeks back.

First started working the beach up and down with a 40g twistie, but for about 30 casts only hooked a small queenie. I then changed to a bright green medium sized ritcher plug and worked my way back up the beach for no hits at all. I was starting to think maybe toasted cheese sandwiches for tea. I had a dig around in my tackle box and found some small ritcher plugs, that i got Mako to send up to me a couple of weeks back. Tied on one of the plugs, and began to cast. The wind by now had started to pick up, but this was good as i was able to cast out a bit further. The red and white plug flew threw the air, and plunged into the water about 50ms out. A quick flick of the bail arm, rod tip in the water, i began my slow retrieve. Bang, i was on.....shit not another queenie.  There was no silver spash in the water, and once i turned the fish around and got it to shore i could soon see it was a nice coral trout. Measured him up at 49cms, this is perfect eating size for my tea!

Got home from work at 3:30am (started at 7am the previous day-gotta love the overtime)Tues morn with my eyes handing out, had 3 hrs sleep, after loading the boat, picking my favourite deckie up got to the ramp about 9:15. Were planning to head into the 90m mark, but was spretty bumpy so decided to fish inside direction bank in 40m. On my way to a spot found another lump, full of life. Fished it for 30 min and pulled 2 dhuies and 2 Baldies all good sized....time to head home. Decided to put out some home made teasers with skirts and hooks and managed a nice southern blue fin. By this time the wind had dropped and ocean was flat, was a sweet ride home.........

Well after saying good bye to Claire this morning as she was going to work, it was time for me to go to work on the local fish population. After the 2 minute drive to the ramp, i was on the water buy 0630. The sun was just coming out, and a light sou easter blowing thru my locks...... i could feel today was going to be fishy.

I made my way out the back of conexion Island, to find some new ground.  After 30 mins of cruzing around i finally found a nice little lumpy bit.

By now the wind had dropped off to nothing, i lined up for my first drift. With a standard patenoster rig and a half of squid, i sent my bait spiralling to the ocean floor. Bump..bump ..bite..bite...strike.... im on! Couldnt believe it was onto a good fish first drop. My arms were tired already, from changing a few hundred screen panels in last weeks shut down. But this was no time to be soft, i had to get this fish to the surface before mr grey suit came for some breakfast. finally getting the fish up, i soon had my new pb blue spot emperor.  Around the 50cm mark, they sure put up a fight.

Had a few more drifts there, for a couple of smaller fish. Then took off out into the channel, to some deeper water around the 40s. Did a fair few drifts across some broken ground, which produced some nice saddletail, finger mark....and a lone GT around the 60cm mark, which basically took every bit of energy from my arm muscles i had left. After this i decided to call it a day and head back to the ramp. On the way back, i notced i few tuna starting to show up at last... soon hopefully the mackies will be here! Home at the ramp at 11 am, another mint day on the water!

Record Breaker lol the lie detector is pointing right in between 0 and 5 kg, so yer around 2.5 kg KG... Im stoked.

My best Dhu on soft plastic caught in 13m of water on light spin gear off the coast of Dongara. 

Hi fishwrecked crew been looking at this site for a while now but this is my first pic post, this is a KG i caught off Dongara on a 5 inch soft plastic, it measured 64 cm and weighed 2.5 kg cracker of a fish an a awesome catch this far north.

Was knacked from diving and fishing after work yesterday so I layed my weary head down when I got home from work this arvo. A quarter to five the phone rings " You have got to be joking" I said to myself. After a angry "Hello" I discovered it was Alois the owner of the Pohnpei Surf Club. "Get your casting pole (he's Brazilian) and come down the club right now, we're going fishing". Five minutes later I was there, six minutes later we had left the dock, 15 minutes later we were casting. Only took about 20 minutes and I had my first Black Trevally on popper in Pohnpei, not big but a first is a first. A couple of minutes later Alois is on to a bigger fish. Was estimated at about 10kgs. First cast after helping Alois land his fish I'm on again. A better fish this time. Not massive at 7kgs (15lb5) but in a way I was glad it wasn't any bigger, the efforts of the previous day were really kicking in. We left shortly after that to be home before it got too dark. Hopefully no one calls me to go fishing tomorrow as I am well and truly buggered. If someone calls, I'll go because I'm an addict.
