Rusting outboard
Submitted by wayneleech on Sat, 2009-11-14 11:11
G'day fellas - i've noticed a few rust spots appearing on the main support in my outboard - see pics below.
The outboard is only 2 years old and I was quite suprised to see it rusting at this age. Has anyone experienced rusting like this? Especially anyone that owns a Mercury Optimax.
I'm going to give the dealer a call though I thought I would put a post up to see what feedback I get. It appears to me that the paint is flaking off - which maybe why it's rusting?
In regards to maintence I do look after it - I flush and run the engine after every trip.
Cheers
Wayne

Sounder Transponder postioning & angle
Submitted by Jedstar on Tue, 2009-11-10 11:39Would somebody be able to tell me the best position for the sounder transponder. Is there a rule of thumb, the position the builder placed it was too low causing a rooster tail and at speed the sounder unclicks and surfs giving no reading until you slow it sinks on the bracket and gets working again. I realize I must raise it some but how much? Should it be level with the keel with inside side of the unit directly level with the hull or will that be too high. Appreciate some advice from people who have been here.

Jenks Craft
Submitted by colesy777 on Tue, 2009-11-10 11:18Hello All
A couple of years ago i bought a 25ft Jenkscraft, I have heard only good things about these hulls and now after owning one and putting it through some pretty rough condititions can vouch for there great ocean abillity, especially thier dry ride. (surprising as hull has hardly any flare) Does anyone know where the design has come from or any history on these hulls? Maybe had one?
Cheers Jace

406 Epirb
Submitted by iana on Mon, 2009-11-09 15:50Just wondering of persons are aware of the 406 Distress Beacon Register and MMSI database.
Once registered, you can alter your personal information, transfer your Epirb from boat to boat or to a off road vehicle, and even post general details about your intended trip.
This also ties in with DSC messaging on VHF radios.

406 Epirb Question
Submitted by Rick on Fri, 2009-11-06 19:10Does anybody know to what depth a 406 Epirb will continue to work ?
The question came up while helping a neighbour fitout his new boat. I advised him to a get one of those safety grab bags for his safety gear. The epirb comes with a mounting bracket so he was unsure whether to put the 406 in the bag or mount it in the holder. So the question was,if the boat went down and you couldn't grab the Epirb how deep before the water penetrated the casing and stopped it working..
Mines is mounted to the boat

Custom Boat Graphics?
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Tue, 2009-11-03 18:54Hey Crew,
Just wondering how many of you have custom boat graphics on your pride and joy? Or if not custom, have graphics of some sort that you bought aftermarket? Just wondering what sort of money you have spent on doing so and if you haven't and plan to, how much would you spend? I'm thinking I will get some done once I upgrade from the dinghey dingy. (no offence BJ )
Cheers,
Adam

New Wakemaker 5.5m Centre Cab
Submitted by Choongy on Sat, 2009-10-31 22:18Hi All
Mentioned a while ago that had a new boat on the way. After a bit of a delay, as of Monday, she is on under construction. Got some good input from members when I was thinking about the set up, and a few people expressed interest in seeing shots of it coming together. No photjournalist, but we'll see how it goes. Still open to any input. Apparently she'll be up and dancing by Chrissy.

Travelling at WOT
Submitted by big john on Wed, 2009-10-28 22:25Just curious as to how to many guys with boats belt around at Wide Open Throttle when the conditions allow.
Myself, I'll sit on about 5100rpm when its flat but that's still 30 knots with a fully laden 6.1m ali being pushed by a 150 4 stroke yamaha.
The sweet spot for fuel economy though is around 4200-4500rpm.
Can't personally see the point in caning the motor at 6000rpm but I'm just wondering if I'm babying the motor to much. When I had a two stroke I used to crack it right open occasionally just to clean it out but with the modern four strokes I don't see the need.
Interested in peoples thoughts.

Purchasing/shipping boats from the US
Submitted by Stev0 on Wed, 2009-10-28 16:08Has anyone had any experience in purchasing and shipping boats from the US? I have been chatting with a few family friends who have mentioned that because of the GFC the boat market is pretty appealing, although they were talking about the larger variety (40ft +) I was interested to know if anyone has done it here for smaller ~25ft CC's. If anyone has, what kind of shipping costs, loading/unloading from ports and so on, import duty (apart from gst) did you have to pay or any catches to look out for.
Cheers.

need help painting dinghy
Submitted by Ollie on Mon, 2009-10-19 21:42My brother and I have been doing a 12ft dinghy project and we wanted to get some advice before we paint the hull. We’ve removed all the old paint so we were thinking of purchasing the paint in the next few days and wondered what to get and is it possible for us to apply it with a spray gun. We were hoping for a glossed finish like on new boats so we went sure whether this is possible for us to achieve without getting it professionally done.
Cheers Ollie

stainless or ali work?
Submitted by mako magic on Thu, 2009-10-15 13:32Does anyone know of a place close to ballajura/malaga that would be worth using for some stainless or ali work.
im needing some more rod holders on the boat as the rocket launcher only accomodates 5 rods, and because its powder coated i dont really want to touch it, so was looking at getting a rack to fit between the existing rocket launcher and be mounted on the hard top.

Transom mount v's Faired transducers
Submitted by till on Thu, 2009-10-15 07:01So my bro's trip to steep point has cost us a transducer. No real idea what happened, he just mentioned they was missing one day. They were spearing, so they don't really use it that much.
Now, I'm planning on moving my electronics onto a different hull sometime, a glass one. Do people think that a faired through-hull transducer is worth the effort?
I'm talking about a Raymarine A65 with an Airmar P58 v's B45
The strakes on the tinny hull meant the sounder was always pretty ratty at speed and there are strakes on the new tinny, but perhaps that is less of an issue with the thru-hull ones?

Heads up
Submitted by MAXIMA on Wed, 2009-10-14 21:31
G'day,
I have recently purchased a 1976 Baron Sportsman 5.6 with a 85 johnson outboard (buggered) and was trying to get some information in regards to doing it up!
I have had the hull checked out by a reputable boat builder and it all appears to be in good structural order, the floor is a bit spongy between the supports and a few gel coat cracks on the port side from jetty bouncing.
I was thinking of upgrading the 1976 johno with a 115 evinrude e-tec, hydrolic steering, a dual battery system, new radio's and a general big tidy up, new windows etc. Basically as it sits i have a good trailer and hull.
As there is so much information out there i am trying to get a non biest salesman heads up as a few dollars will be spent, I want to do it right the first time and get the information from people who know what they are talking about instead of salesman seeing dollar signs. Achieving a strong reliable boat is what i am trying to achieve.
Some believe that the 90 e-tec evinrude will be ample horse power as the 115 is really the max hp for the boat and others believe a 130 suits the boat.
The boat will be used for offshore fishing mainly and young family boating trips.
Anybody with info or things to look out for would be greatly appreciated.
Have a good one.

Winch Rope
Submitted by Voyager on Mon, 2009-10-12 20:27G'day all,
I've just bought a synthetic winch rope to replace the fraying wire one that can be really nasty. Even though it says that it's got a breaking strain of 1700kg, it's only 5mm thick. Does anyone know from their own experiences if this rope is strong enough to winch my 18.5 ft Voyager? It carries a 90hp outboard.

Polycraft
Submitted by Cammos on Sun, 2009-10-11 18:53Took a ride in a 6m Cuddy Polycraft at the boat show. I was very impressed with the soft ride, but a little worried with the lack of steering response. It had a 150 Yamaha 4 stroke, got 22 knots at 2800RPM, and from memory 36 knots at 4900RPM, 36 knots in the seas on Saturday arvo was a bit hairy. The dealer also said it could be propped up a bit too if I can forgo some holeshot.
Does anyone have any feedback or experience on the Polycraft boats? For my mind, they seem very good boats for the price, but cannot figure why there is bugger all of them around. The steering may just be me used to a stern drive maybe. It seems to be a big delay from moving the wheel to actually changing course.
I am happy with the storage issue before anybody says that too.
Any comments are welcome.
