Technician Engine Analysis Checklist

By
Captain Scott Fratcher

An engine analysis is an advanced system of inspecting our boats
drive train. We perform these tests to help catch pending mechanical
issues before we leave the dock. An analysis is much more comprehensive
than a typical “pre-departure peak” at the engine. We are
going to not only visually inspect our engine, but also take a series
of measurements that become our baseline for future tests. Our goal
is use this engine analysis as a system to help make easy informed decisions
about our boats drive system.

To begin you should have on-hand as much of the following as possible:

  • · Camera

  • · Notepad

  • · Your collection of electrical meters

  • · A 0-3 bar pressure gauge (if your engine has a turbo)

  • · An infer red temperature gauge

  • · Any other special tools you might have

  • · A few rags, and spray cleaner

The steps to performing an engine analysis:

1. Visual inspection

2. Pre inspection

3. Bollard pull

4. Analyzing the numbers

Visual inspection

This is a general once over of the engine looking for blatant flaws.

Open the engine room door, look, feel and smell

Look for oil drips or other fluid under the engine. Inspect for obvious
cracked hoses. Give a gentle bend where a hose attaches to the engine
and look for cracks in the rubber cover. Check the fan belts for cracks
and loose hose clamps. Grab the alternator pulley and see if it will
spin free on the belt. If it does then the belt is worn or loose.

Feel the inside of the engine room for oil film. Touch the areas of
the engine you can’t see feeling for rust or salt trails.

Smell for any burned chemical type odor. Smells can be difficult to
locate, but in general any burnt, oily, or diesel smells should be searched
out. A good nose can tell the difference between a hot belt and a hot
wire.

Look over the complete engine for oil leaks. Pay particular attention
to the front seal, and the area between the gearbox and engine. Leaks
in the front or rear seal can mean a coming engine rebuild. Inspect
the head to block connection looking for oil or water trails.

Take photos from all angles as a base line for later use.

This is the point where many an engine inspection ends, but in an analysis
we want better scrutiny to help build confidence in our propulsion system.

Our next series of checks focus on fluid inspections

Oil

Oil is the lifeblood of our engine. It lubricants, cools and quiets
our engine. But how do we know if the oil is doing its job?

Begin by pulling the dipstick. Smell for signs of diesel odor. Pinch
a small dab of oil between your index finger and thumb and expand slowly
to see how far you can spread the oil before the gap opens. Compare
this gap to new oil and take down the difference for your notes. This
is a crude method of checking viscosity and diesel intrusion.

Open the oil fill and look inside the cap for water droplets, condensation
or worse, a gray gooey substance indicating water penetration into the
oil. Put a small drop of oil on a paper towel and compare it to a new
oil drop. Note the amount of black carbon and any shiny deposits.

A more careful inspection can include an inside look at the oil filter.
Next time you change oil keep the old filter. Leave it to drain upside
down then cut open the canister and look at the inside of element. It’s
the inside that will contain any heavy deposits or worse, metal shavings.
Take photos for later comparison.

Immediately after start up note the oil pressure and again during our
bollard pull test and lastly immediately upon reducing throttle after
our bollard pull test. Does the gauge needle dip? It should remain steady
from start up and through all the following tests. A dipping gauge can
indicate a faulty pressure release, or worse, worn engine bearings.

So far have been quoted $600 for fitting and then parts which was around $900. Can anyone advise on what price I should expect for fitting or can recommend someone??.

Repair sun cracked bimmini cover

Hi Everyone

I have a quintrex bayhunter and the biminiroof which connects to the front windscreen has seen better days.  it has obviously been left out to the elements by the previous owner and has quite a few cracks where the vinyl is coming off the cotton base which means i get fairly wet in rougher conditions.  i was hoping to find some sort of sealant i could paint or spray over it to water proof it as replacing it i imagine would be an expensive execise.  has anyone repaired 1 of these before or got any ideas as to what i could put on it

cheers

Furuno sounders

Just a question about high end furuno gear. I have a customer wanting to install a good furuno sounder in a 28ft bertram. we are looking at a 3kw transducer mounted in a wetbox. Most of the fishing is done around 100m deep. If ryan or anyone in the know sees this could he recomend a head unit for this application and a tranducer or give some advice.
thanks andy

Epirb Prices

Hey Guys

New boat incoming, so I am going to need a few things. Firstly an Epirb, who has the deals going at the minute? Last had a GME, same is Ok.

Also need a sounder and GPS unit, maybe combo, maybe separate. Don't need to see fish so much as the shape of the bottom for diving. Thinking a smallish GPS but bigger finder. Probably $2k to spend on that. I had a Humminbird 788X on the last boat and it was good, but can see the value in 2 screens.

Any ideas or theories are welcome.

Gday all, Just wondering if anybody has had good reports or can point me in the right direction as to a specialist mercury servicer around the perth metro dont mind travelling north or south either if its for a good cause,  Its due for the yearly tweak up and got a few questions and little things would like looked at by someone who really knows what they are doing, Its a 115hp 2 stroke... cheers

Patching Holes in Aluminium Boats

Hi guys,Just wondering if anyone had any experience with patching holes in aluminium boats and whats the best stuff to use?

Yesterday i went over a reef and accidentally put a small pencil sized hole in an existing patch on the boat. That particular area appears to have been patched before but now i got a new hole in the patch. Its not leaking yet, but i want to "re patch" the patch.

I have no idea what the previous owner used but it appears to be silverish in color and they used a sealant to go over that particular patch.

Any ideas on what i should be using?

Cheers.

Kackles

marine silicones

Looking at fitting some trim tabs soon, and will need to shift one if not both of the transducers.

Wondeing whats the best brands of silicones/putty etc for filling holes wires etc that people have used, i know with some items, brands can differ?

Any FW Fabricators? Underfloor Fuel Set Up

G'day Guys,

Looking to upgrade current fuel system set up to a underfloor system. Probably going to need a custom tank knocked up as we can't find any current fuel tanks on web to meet specifications. Are there any FW Fabricators out there that could do this sort of thing? would much rather direct the coin your way first before looking elsewhere.

As a side note to anyone who has also done fuel conversions to underfloor your advice on this topic would be valuable. Boat is a 5.4 Westerncraft F/G with a recess already in place (presuming it has been put in as a kill tank but never been used)

Cheers in advance

Windscreen, rocketlauncher/binini suppliers/installeres

Hi All,

I'm looking at fitting a fold down rocket launcher to my 5m runabout and then using that to mount a binini off. I'm not sure if my words explain it but it's all working out in my head. Does anone recomend any particlar uphosterers???

I'm also concidering a new windscreen. I'm pretty handy and would have a crack at doing the windscreen myself if anyone can recommend where to get aluminium extrusions from. Alternativly if it is cheap enough to get the pro's to do it, they can. can anyone recomend marine window fitters?

Cheers

Adam

What do you guys think?

What do you guys think of my dads boat? Shes an old chivers hull with a 200 turbo diesel, volvo penta leg. Great fuel economy at around 16 knts pushes along at 25knts WOT.

Uploaded a new pic. Tell me if its better :)

Boat seat Storage

Am just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for an esky/storage/seat box for our 5.4 westerncraft. We are thinking an esky with rod holders and maybe some storage underneath for tackle or dry storage. Anyone know of anywhere local they may sell something similar.

Cheers

Windscreen for Tinny

Hi guys,

l'm thinking of getting a windscreen for my tinny to keep out the water as the spray just flys into my new boat! I measured the tinny curvature and the total length is 1.55m

I actually went down to bunnings and took a look  at the perspex but it was very inflexible and expensive @ $55 bucks for just 1 meter. Also i would have to fashion a frame and i have no idea how to do this.

Pic as attached. Any advice on how to get it organised and approximate cost is appreciated.

 Cheers

Gps cable

Broke the plastic base that the GPS antenna screws into. Have ordered a new stainless steel one but the question i have is can you cut and reconnect the wire between the antenna and screen or is it  fibre cable.

The antenna is on top of targa bar and cable runs down middle of bar under dash into unit . Trying to get away with not having to re-run all cabling from antenna to unit.

All comments appreciated.

launching between the capes

Hi everyone

After recently purchassing a boat and hanging up the LB gear for a break I am heading down to margs for the weekend of the 18th and wondering what the options are for launching a 4.75 quintrex.  I have been out of dunsborough a few times in other peoples boats and am confident launching that side.  I am staying near Gnarabup/prevally is the ramp there ok it looks fairly reefy offshore..  i know there is also 1 at canal rocks maybe this one is better.  i am hoping to head out and look for a dhuey or snapper i have not fished that side before and without asking for any spots roughly how far out and depths would i be looking at fishing.  From what i have seen to the dunsborough side is good for hezza's whiting squid and general small fry and i would have to head out to cape naturaliste for the bigger stuff.  Any info appreciated

cheers rig
