Coastal road v's brand highway to Gero

Just wondering which road is prefered by everyone towing boats. Coastal road is great up past lancelin but very skinny nearer to Gero with few overtaking lanes. Havn't used Brand since coastal was opened so can't compare them today. Thanks.

Competent Perth Radar - NOT

From 6.30am this morning, was apparently pissing down at our place for about an hour, radar even had speckles of yellow in it. Yet all we actually got was a couple of drops that didnt even dirty the windscreen.

Good to see the recent Millions the state upgrading this have delivered us  reliable, effective modern technology.

Just came across this mad cover of it - some rockin youngsters!

Western Pygmy Perch?

 Hey guys,

Built a pond over the Chrissie period. It is looking really good, got a nice lily growing well. Also have plenty of pond creatures including mozzie larvae. I want a few native fish to clean up the larvae. Anyone know where I can get a few Western Pygmy Perch south of the river.

Cheers

Chris

the passing of Len Buckridge

There will only be one Len Buckridge a self made billionare not born with a sliver spoon in his mouth , or the beneficiary a huge inheritance As a unionist I will say this about Len , he was bloody tough, away from the negotiation table he could crack a joke , and then get back to negotiations , as far as I could tell he didn't hate the unions , I know this if he struck a deal with the unions he would stick with it . He was more pissed of at middle ranking beaurocats that would knock all his idears on the head RIP LEN

big angry fish

Cedit where credit is due I have been critical of the show Big Angry Fish in the past for not targeting fish other than kingys and snapper. I have to say the latest series is bloody good as they are travelling overseas targeting fish I could only dream about and they haven't fallen for the trap of turning their show it a 80% tackle advetisment 20% fishing show (think ET,S fishing adventures and a few other eastern states produced fishing shows)

RIP my darling

 Hi FW'ers.

Its with a heavy heart that I have to inform my FW friends that my darling husband passed away on the 3.03.14.  After a long battle with a swollen spleen and luekemia he passed away peacefully in his sleep.  The funeral was beautiful with his daughter giving her Dad a beautiful send off with words that only a daughter/father would understand.  Had a brilliant wake down at the CPBA, plenty of booze and food that Bob would have loved to see all his fishing friends and family enjoy with our million dollar view.

Love

Roberta

ps  I'll still keep a eye out for all of you that wish to come to Leeman for your holidays.

come on lets get it started,go pies

pies by 19 points, lets see how long it lasts before it goes feral!!

bloody chilly festive

18 dollars per person to get in to the chilly festive I think is over the top , boat show entrance is 10 dollars its the last year I will do the chilly festive and lets face it its just a lot of people trying to sell you stuff $18 to get in is well over the top

boat show

What a joke ,very disapointed will not go again .A car boot sale a the local rsl would be more intresting .

And the wind goes on

Ha ha this is getting beyond a joke. Can't even get out to check the pots as we beach launch. Hurry up Autumn light breezes

How deep can a fish go?

How deep can a fish go? Scientists may have answer

In a paper published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists from the U.S., Britain and New Zealand describe catching translucent hadal snailfish at a depth of 7 kilometers (4.3 miles).

By measuring levels of a compound in the fish that helps offset the effects of pressure, the scientists say they've concluded that fish likely can't survive below about 8,200 meters (5.1 miles). That would mean no fish at all live in the deepest one-quarter of the world's oceans.

The snailfish have little pigmentation due to the lack of light in their environment, hence their translucent appearance.

New Zealand marine ecologist Ashley Rowden, a co-author of the paper, said nobody had caught a snailfish in nearly 60 years and so he wasn't overly hopeful when they sent down a box-like trap into the Kermadec Trench near New Zealand in late 2011.

He said they used mackerel as bait to attract the small sandhopper-like creatures the snailfish feed upon.

"When it came up, it was just amazing to see. It was 'Oh my God, we've got the fish, and we've got more than one,'" Rowden said.

This photo taken in late 2011 and released by University of Aberdeen, shows hadal snailfish 7,500 meters down, at the bottom of the Kermadec Trench near New Zealand. Scientists say the snailfish are providing new insights into how deep fish can survive. Photo: AP Photo/University of Aberdeen

Rowden said he put on gloves and carefully picked up one of the fish.

"It was like a water-filled condom," he said. "A sloppy, gelatinous mass that moves between your hands. It was very cool, and very strange to see its organs and everything."

Rowden, who works at New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, said scientists had previously speculated fish couldn't live below certain depths but that catching the fish and studying them helped provide more scientific certainty.

The fish are the second-deepest recorded catch. In 1970, a boat off the coast of Chile reported catching a cusk eel at a depth of 8,370 meters in a trawl net, although questions remain whether that fish was caught at the ocean floor or higher up as the net was hauled in.

The paper's lead author, Paul Yancey of Whitman College in Washington state, said they were able to measure the levels in the fish of trimethylamine oxide, a molecule that protects proteins from pressure. He said there appears to be a natural limit to the amount of the molecule a fish can contain.

Yancey said the molecule is already being studied for its human applications, including in the treatment of glaucoma.

Meanwhile, he said, if the hadal snailfish look strange enough, they would smell terrible when they decompose. That, he said, is because the molecule has another property — it gives fish their distinctive smell, so the deeper they live, the stronger they stink.

Yancey is keeping his snailfish on ice.

Spent $400, saved $3800. Thanks Oceanside!

Had a work requirement to get lead shot for anchor shackles. Called a retailer in Karratha whom we previously picked up this stuff from who had stock. 30mm lead pieces at $21 each.

Called up the local guys at Oceanside as I was sure that sinkers would do the job. Picked up 200 x size 10's, saving a bundle of cash.

Cheers guys for the service, and even offering the FW discount :-)

More to the point, it's pretty cool buying from a fishing tackle store, for work.

2 rocks ramp update

Well a big machine arrived yesterday ,and new panels are now on site .Just rang the marina  and was told no set date has been made on the finish, but it is starting to look promising.

Seabird Landbased in a couple of weeks

Heading up to Seabird in a couple of weeks and have not fished there for a while.

Have read reports on where to fish in particular the reef platforms south. I have a 4wd so access not a problem.

Low tide in the morning.

Will be staying in town walking distance from the beach. Will fish morning and night

Has anyone been up there recently. Any reports?

Would realy like to get my first Mulloway after years of trying.

What are the reef platforms like for tailor in the morning?

warning warning down under autos

Just had a very unpleasant experience with a place called downunder autos.

Had to get a boat trailer inspection done to license in wa after importing from nsw.

Only place that would inspect with boat on was this mob.

Right from the start I felt the vibe... the old guy I spoke to sounded like he wouldve welcomed a merciful ending.

He made me feel I shouldve paid more and be grateful that he picked up the phone.

Better be here by 8! He says, we are busy... um ok im a customer. .. this isnt a love job so fit me in when you can... naa just bring it in we'll see if we can do it.... ????

I say, mate I dont have all that many days off myself. I need to know you can do it.... pause. Yup bring it in at 8 wednesday. I left at 7.15 from duncraig thinking id better not be late. I underestimated the hopeless situation of ocean reef road heading north at 7.30... at 7.55 still between waneroo rd and freeway I called the mob to advise id be another 10-15.

Young guy this time... same attitude.. we are busy... be as quick as you can in the same dead tone. Im trying I said.

I arrived at 810am parked 100 metres away so I didnt block drive and went to the only opening with a sign that I could see near workshop. I stood outside waiting to get someone's attention when an old guy (from the phone maybe) reverses out of workshop revving guts out of car and stops near me yelling at me cant you read no one allowed in workshop!

I said im not in workshop getting a bit peeved by this unprovoked and unreasonable attack. Why didnt you go to reception he says. Wheres reception? Just up there next to sign that says reception! There was a sign but unfortunately it was on the wall you walk beside facing out not along roadway so it was invisible unless you knew it was there.

Anyway I lost it. Told him to settle down and not get his nickers in a not and walked up to "reception".

Met the dead voice young guy who before I had finished introducing myself points to another counter with various items on it and states coldly fillout the first two lines.

Ok... I fill in first two lines and start on next before checking just filling in the year of trailer. I take it to him and he says fill out top two lines only! Do it again... Im starting to wonder if ive got a sign on my forehead saying absolute **** kick me.

I say its just the year... examiner will just right it down anyway. You cant fill it in he says.. its the law. .. I sigh and say you guys gotta work on  your bedside manner and we get into a small argument. By now im thinking I dont want these pricks doing this job on my trailer... they will go out of their way to fail it. So I sit here and wait for the inevitable...

I will update and let you know of the result. Either way I will be making a formal complaint to dot about this "approved" inspection agent..... downunder autos wangara

Boat Harbour Chalets-- Closed

Tried ringing today, just to make contact to book a powered tent site (do not really need to book) for next Monday, but no phone connect. Phoned a friend and yes it is closed.
Absolutaly devastated, small chest freezer full of bait and block ice,lot of other gear packed and ready to stack in the ute, now it looks like find room for fuel cans and generator and camp at Parrys.
Boat Harbour camp site was so convenient for my casual style of fishing, early morning or late afternoon and beeroclock in between. From Parrys it means going out on the highway back to Boat Harbour track. Never lost my licence yet and not about to risk it now. Bugger,Bugger,Bugger

Rodeo / Dmax Colorado owner feedback

 Gday fellas,

Thinking about getting a Rodeo/colorado/dmax dual cab ute

Anybody got one?

What kind of real fuel data are you getting? The written down is 8.5l diesel to 100kms, sounds pretty good to me

Auto or Manual? I would prefer the manual

Would you go another one? Or recomned something differnet?

Anyting to look out for?

Im looking in the 15k / 100k kms range

Reasons for Rodeo/colorado/dmax over other utes is:

- Fuel efficency

- Hilux is overpriced for what it is,

-bt50 doesnt tow very much written down, and uses more fuel

-triton is heaps of plasticy cheap, and speedo's are often out

-wouldnt consider chinease rubbish

Cheers,

Josh

Rod Conversion

 Hi,

I have an 11ft one piece ugly stick rod. Is it an easy process to convert it to two pieces? Is it possible? Who can do it? Reason for this is ease of transport.

The rod is at least 15 years old. Its a great rod. Used it at Garth's, flicking out lures for mackies. Cheers.

White hills

Went down whitehills beach today, swell was huge, beach was busy with campers and wind came up too early, a good day was had though with some nice fresh herring  on the BBQ and a couple of coldies. Noticed 3 choppers and the mandurah sea rescue boat hanging around 1 area for quite some time, presumed a shark or two in the area but seemed odd that the police helicopter would be there just for a shark, anyone know more?

The new trailer

Should be able to head back out onto the water soon now we have a new trailer after the insurance said our other one was to rusty. Looks the absolute biz and thanks to Guy from Ace trailer absolute top bloke. Would recommended him to any one great service and good price.
