This would take some balls - Free Willy

An orca that had become entangled in a crayfish pot off a New Zealand beach cried for the help of nearby orcas, but is alive thanks to a local diver who plunged in with a knife and cut the mammal loose. Part of the event was videotaped, and the orca's cries can be heard in the footage.
The rescue, just a few hundred yards off Hahei Beach, was performed by Rhys Cochrane of a Cathredal Cove dive outfit. The rope attached to the crayfish pot had become twisted around the orca's tail and, in order to surface and breathe, the mammal had to lift the heavy pot off the ocean floor.
The accompanying video shows only some footage. In the 3 News video report, more footage is revealed and Cochrane explains that when he dove in he could see several other orcas nearby.
The entangled orca, Cochrane explained, became still as he approached with his kinfe. "He didn't seem to mind or maybe even knew that I was trying to help him," Cochrane said.
After being freed, the orca joined its family and the mammals disappeared into the blue-green haze

Squid v Occy
Submitted by sea-kem on Wed, 2012-02-08 21:02Just curious who prefers which bait? The pro's and cons and why. Being that they are probably the most common bait used for bottom bouncing apart from fresh caught bait. Curios with the occy fishers as to how you present your bait? Skinned chunks or a tentacle running out from a hook?

Strange Start To The Day
Submitted by abeldog on Tue, 2012-02-07 06:23Got up early for my flight to Geraldton, Followed a tradies van down Karrinyup road then onto Morley drive,
At a set of lights, beeped the driver and wound down my window, he wound down his and gave me "The Look", you know the one that says "What the F### do you want".
"Mate you have a cat on your roof" I yelled.
Slowly the door opened, out he got, only to discover his pet cat had been hanging on his roof rack since Trigg.
I then gave him "That Look" and drove off.
Man I thought I was seeing things

FW AFL Tipping Comp
Submitted by big john on Sun, 2012-02-05 18:12Last years tipping comp was a success, apart from oztips changing tipping formats mid season.
Going to be a bit time poor this season so I wont be running it.
If anyone wants to run with it that would be great. Happy to participate, just not administer the comp.
Go Pies!

Fishwrecked Dreamteam League (not Supercoach)
Submitted by schecky on Sun, 2012-02-05 15:49
Sorry if someone has done this already for dreamteam this year but thought I would continue the dreamteam fishwrecked league deal so I have made a league again this year for all of us.
If there is enough interest I can make a second one again as well.
As we all know (or should be aware if ill informed), I conquered the Fishwrecked league (nothing unexpected there) so if you would all like to witness this flogging of epic proportions once again feel free to join the league.
The league code is: 601560
First in best dressed!
PS: No-one pick Jaeger O'meara please, you will be instantly ejected from the league for blatant ignorance.

Funny Moments or Serious stuff-ups
Submitted by CCC on Wed, 2012-02-01 16:40Hi All
Thought I would share a seriously funny moment that happened involving a mate (Dave aka DBP) when out fishing a couple of weeks ago. Dave was happily bottom bouncing with his overhead combo when he hooked up on a nice size shark.
Now he happened to be wearing my big brimmed hat as I'm a good bloke and didn’t want him getting sunburnt. This hat has a very long cord (chin strap) and in the process of battling to get the shark up the cord has caught on the drag adjuster. He then proceeded to wind his reel up to his chin. Well.......I could have helped him out if I was not crying with laughter.
You need to get a mental picture of a guy doing battle with a good size shark with this reel attached to his chin. Now the option to back the drag off has gone(still laughing as I write this). It is one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time just wish I had been smart enough to take a photo. Now if he had looked like going over the side I would have helped him out as I did not want to lose my nice hat hahaha.
The whole trip was full of funny mistakes including me trying to drive off with the sea anchor but hey why did the decky not pull it in.........
So come on guys share some of those funny moments and give us all a good laugh or even share some serious moments we can all learn from
Cheers CCC

Lead Kiln ( Home made )
Submitted by grantarctic1 on Wed, 2012-02-01 16:16Hi crew, i had an old compressor tank and finaly worked out what to use it for.
The tank.

I cut of the all the exrta bits and reused the skid's for the feet of the kiln.

Then i got the gas burner and a large camp oven ( pot )

I worked out how to fit these to the tank and started cutting the tank open

A few finishing touches to the door and a coat of high temp paint .

I intend to use this kiln for large melt's of scrap lead to be turned into ingot's.

It will run of a 9kg gas bottle.

I also have an extraction fan to fit to the flu to remove fumes .
It will be used outside as well for ventilation . ( I fully understand the dangers of working with lead )
Cheers Grant .

Living in Geraldton advice
Submitted by mr_meks on Tue, 2012-01-31 13:06We are going to have to move to geraldton very soon, and are in the process of trying to find a rental house. Unfortunately I think we're going to have to pick up a house without actually seeing it first.
Anyone got any words of wisdom regarding good/bad suburbs to live in and any other pointers I should be worried about. My only tool at the moment is google maps and street view. Drummond cove looks good to me I guess, I heard there might be somewhere to throw in a boat there?

LEIGHTON Holdings subsidiary Thiess and a Belgian company have jointly won a $260 million contract to develop a port in WA's North-West.
Thiess and Belgian company BESIX SA will design and develop a breakwater and materials offloading facility as part of the Chevron-operated Wheatstone liquefied natural gas project (LNG).
The contract is expected to create more than 300 jobs.
The majority of the new work will be based in Onslow - with at least 80 per cent of the contracted work taking place in Australia, Leighton said today.
``This partnership creates a new specialist marine capability to support the booming LNG sector and continues our involvement in the industry,'' said Thiess managing director Bruce Munro.
Work on the project is due to start this year.
Thiess is currently completing two contracts for Chevron on the Gorgon LNG Project at Barrow Island offshore from northern WA.

Seabird report
Submitted by sea-kem on Mon, 2012-01-30 17:46Just a few pics of the last couple of trips out. We headed out the Saturday before Aus day on awesome conditions, checking the pots first to to find 3 crays one of them a cracker that had been eaten by an occy ( always the big one damn it). Beaing so good we headed out into some deeper water but the Dhuies weren't playing the game but thankfully the Baldies were. The young fella got his first ever hooked in the nose, he was pretty wrapped as it was his first big fish.
Nice 12kg Bronzie to finish off the day
The Sargeant Baker had to be kept with the insistence of the young fella as he caught it
The Breaksea was a beauty at 460mm
.
Went out again twice over the Aus day weekend a long day Friday for one bloody Baldie but Sat provided the goods with this 8kg Pinkie
Still no Dhuies and we hunted everywhere in the 20's to the 40's using fresh Wrasse and squid .Not to say they're not around as other guys out were getting them I'm just having one of those crappy droughts. Only one way to cure that is to keep heading out ;)

Sounder Screen shots
Submitted by CCC on Sun, 2012-01-29 18:33Hi All
I've been playing with the new sounder(Simrad NSS12) trying to fine tune it and thought I would share some screen shots.
Wanbro sound

I'm sure you can work out where this one was. Found some good schools shame the snapper ban was on.

Bridge pylons. From memory this was on the Murray River...possibly the ravenswood bridge?

Rock bar in a local creek. Check out the top right split

Took DBP(Dave) out and came across this

Cheers
