Rising Damp - Anyone got any experience? Not fishing related!
Submitted by wazzbat on Tue, 2011-11-29 19:01Hi ppls
Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with fixing up rising damp issues? Just bought a house down at Dawesville and I think we need to fix it up before we some tennants in? It's an old cheaply built house and I think it may even be built with single brick external walls? If anyone can take a look or knows anything about it, would greatly appreciate any comments.
Cheers

Xtreme Coolers update
Submitted by Xtreme Coolers on Mon, 2011-11-28 21:00Hi all.
Well, with all of the new names and people joining the site, i thought it was time to inform the latest and remind the older (ha ha) members exactly what we have to offer the FW members.
Xtreme Coolers is a WA owned and run small business. We operate out of a small warehouse in Mt Lawley. There is no shop front or store to visit so our sales come from the internet, word of mouth and a being part of the FW community.
Fishwrecked is the only site we advertise. we continue to do this to support the site, its members and to also ultimately gain exposure to highlight the products we have on offer. We are committed to providing quality products, product knowledge and service to all.
Our current stock ranges from the new 20 litre beer cooler up to the 260litre coffin. Our range is suited to all areas of cooling needs. We cater for the campers, workers, schools, businesses and of course fisherman.
Xtreme Coolers offers three different designs to suit you tastes.
The standard range (XT) features a thick recessed lid, stainless latches, plastic welded hindes and skid plates. Sizes: 20, 27, 50, 70, 100, 100mack, 120, 180, 210, 260.
The premium range (XTWC) features a new hinge system, thicker walls, rubber feet, stainless latches and two carrying options. Sizes: 55, 85, 150(sold out)
Our cube range (XTPC) is the third and features a taller design, shoulder width for easier lifting, stainless latches and a hidden hinge system. Sizes: 50, 70
All Xtreme Coolers are insulated with polyurethane foam. The same that is in your fridge.
We also offer a range of hire boxes for those who only need a cooler once a year for that large party or fishing trip up North. This includes the FG range. Contact Dave on 0403978583 for any hire enquiries.
We stand by our product and have tested all of our product to ensure it works and will actually last.
Dave runs and owns Xtreme Coolers. You can contact him on 0403978583 or simply use the PM section on the site and he will contact you. Whether it is for sales, after service or information you are after, we look forward in hearing from you.
We are offering a standard 10% off the standard price of any box in our range for FW members. To make things slightly easier, Ryan at oceanside Tackle and Marine in O'Connor has come on board as a stockist and is carrying a selection of the range. The FW discount is also available at Oceanside.
We also have stockists in Esperance. you will find a selection of our range in Esperance Home Hardware and also in the Esperence CRT. You will need to check in store for pricing in Esperence.
Look out for our next exciting anouncment on another Country proprietor stocking a selection of our range. All will be revealled in a week or so.
So, basically, we advertise on the site because Dave loves the site. He loves fishing with the people he meets and gets a real sense of satisfaction out of providing his product to what we have found to be a great bunch of people.
Feel free to visit the website at: xtremeproducts.com.au to view the full range and prices. Remember to take off your 10%.
Thanks again to all who have tested, purchased and used our products. Dave is working on a new competition for FW members at the moment. So hang in there Harro, those photos will definayely come in handy.
We are also looking forward to the 2012 FW fishing comp up in EXXY. Look out for Team Xtreme and we will once again be very happy to provide some prizes for the event.
Can't wait, as they say: I'm excited.
Regards
Dave Allen.

Another one bites the bitumen.
Submitted by Iceman on Mon, 2011-11-28 07:34Phone call from my daughter on Saturday asking me how do you put a boat back on the trailer after it has fallen off. Had been out with a friend all day and was heading home when he rang to say the boat had come off the trailer. No sure of the full story but seems winch broke, no mention of safety chains as have not spoken to her since initial phone call.

New marron season rules
Submitted by bod on Sun, 2011-11-27 11:53The 2012 marron fishing season in Western Australia will see the introduction of a reduced daily bag limit and a possession limit change, required as precautionary measures to deal with changing environmental conditions.
An expert committee of freshwater fisheries stakeholders, including Recfishwest and Department of Fisheries’ managers and researchers, reached consensus on the changes and put a recommendation to the Minister for Fisheries Norman Moore, which he has agreed with.
Department of Fisheries’ Principal Management Officer for the Southern Bioregions Dr Kim Walshe said the 2012 Marron season would run from 8 January to 5 February.
“For the new season the daily bag limit will be reduced from ten to eight marron and the possession limit will drop from 20 to 16 marron in non-trophy waters,” Dr Walshe said.
“Existing marron fishing rules applying to trophy waters will not change and the precautionary measures to adjust bag and possession limits in all other waters will be reviewed at the end of the season to assess the impact of recent higher rainfall.
“The reductions have been necessary because rainfall in the region for 2010 was the lowest recorded and, despite some unexpected good winter rains this year, there is ongoing uncertainty about future rainfall levels for the South West. Rainfall in Perth has declined 20 per cent in the past 10 years and run off into dams has fallen by 60 per cent.”
Dr Walshe said Recfishwest, the peak recreational fishing body, supported the precautionary measures to protect marron stocks, and would be helping to raise awareness of the rule changes with recreational fishers.
“The department will also be running a communications campaign to get the message out about the changes to the bag and possession limits in non-trophy waters,” he said.
Dr Walshe said Department of Fisheries’ researchers were currently undertaking the annual survey of marron populations within the South West.
“This survey will continue until mid-December, to gather important information on abundance, size, sex ratios and reproductive status within the fishery,” he said.
A licence is required for recreational marron fishing during the season. Licences and other information for Western Australia’s recreational marron fishers are available from Department of Fisheries’ website at www.fish.wa.gov.au.

Chisel are in Town
Submitted by Dale on Sat, 2011-11-26 16:54Damn shame we missed out for tickets, would have been an awesome night out. Managed to see them come in at the airport though since Busso shire made special allowances for them to fly jets out of here at midnight, but after the skywest jet landed with all the punters coming down with a flight package deal hopped off that plane a second Skippers plane landed with Cold Chisel on it. That caught everyone by surprise. Managed a couple of shots with my cheap and nasty camera though. Local constabulary were waiting to take them down to Sandalford, lights and sirens on and a police bike escort.
Cheers

New home for wobbegong
Submitted by bod on Thu, 2011-11-24 22:47
A Wobbegong shark was found in a seawater intank station during scheduled maintenance work last week.
Water Corporation spokeswoman Clare Lugar said divers since had been trying to snare the shark.
“We are unlikely to capture it any time soon,” she said.
“It has lived there for nine months quite happily and has had no impact on the plant.
“We are happy to continue as we have been.”
However Ms Lugar said spearing the shark may also be an option.
“These types of sharks are caught frequently in commercial fishing and they’re not endangered,” she said.
“The authorities are not concerned about that option [spearing the shark].”
The 22-metre deep station is at the beach end of a 500-metre long, two-metre diameter pipeline that brings seawater slowly into the plant from the ocean.
The shark had most likely entered the station via the pipeline during the plant’s construction while a grated screen was not in place.
Ms Lugar said the shark may have escaped early checks of the system as it was somewhere in the pipeline that could not be visually checked for safety reasons.
“It would not be possible for a similar shark to enter the station again via the pipe as the screen would now prevent this,” she said.
Areas that were shut down for the maintenance have now resumed operation.

Welcome to the world of stupidity and PC
Submitted by Tony Halliday on Tue, 2011-11-22 10:18Well this one is just hard to believe and again shows you why goverment agencies are just filled with buffoons and paper-chasing idiots
I quote...
http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/world/11892976/no-evidence-water-prevents-dehydration/
'No evidence' water prevents dehydration
Producers of bottled water are now forbidden by UK law from claiming their products will prevent dehydration after a three-year investigation from EU officials.
Britain's The Telegraph has reported the decision was made on the basis there was no evidence to prove the previously undisputed fact.
Producers of bottled water will face a two-year jail sentence if they defy the edict, which comes into force in the UK next month.
Last night, critics claimed the EU was at odds with both science and common sense.
Conservative MEP Roger Helmer said the law was "stupidity writ large."
"The euro is burning, the EU is falling apart and yet here they are: highly-paid, highly-pensioned officials worrying about the obvious qualities of water and trying to deny us the right to say what is patently true," he told The Telegraph.
"If ever there were an episode which demonstrates the folly of the great European project then this is it."
Britain's National Health Service guidelines clearly state drinking water helps avoid dehydration, and that Britons should drink at least 1.2 litres per day.
The Department for Health disputed the wisdom of the new law.
"Of course water hydrates. While we support the EU in preventing false claims about products, we need to exercise common sense as far as possible," a spokesman said.
A meeting of 21 scientists in Parma, Italy, concluded that reduced water content in the body was a symptom of dehydration and not something that drinking water could subsequently control.
Now the EFSA verdict has been turned into an EU directive which was issued on Wednesday.
The Nutrition Society spokesman Prof Brian Ratcliffe said dehydration was usually caused by a clinical condition and that one could remain adequately hydrated without drinking water.
"The EU is saying that this does not reduce the risk of dehydration and that is correct," he said.
"This claim is trying to imply that there is something special about bottled water which is not a reasonable claim."

Right now we all know how cr@p that finding is and in fact against every published medical journal!!!
Maybe we should have a " fired for stupidity clause" in every civil servants contract ???? ![]()

Great experience though and tasting some ruby snapper/mahi mahi was lovely. Always wanted an underwater theme tattoo so I manned up and did a 7hr sesh all in one, came out pretty swell. Just a tiny bit of blue left. Off to Gili island tomorrow should be good

Yacht rescue off Dampier
Submitted by bod on Wed, 2011-11-16 09:25Updated November 16, 2011 09:06:39
A 59-year-old man rescued off the Pilbara coast says his 13 metre yacht sank quickly after hitting something in the water.
Don Drabble was sailing from Dampier to the Monte Bello Islands last night and was 45 nautical miles off the coast when his yacht started to sink.
He set off an emergency beacon and set to sea in a dinghy he was towing and then waited four hours to be rescued.
Mr Drabble has told the ABC he is not sure what his yacht hit.
"I don't think it was a whale, I was in 45 to 50 metres of water at the time," he said.
"I'm surmising it was a container but it's very hard to tell, I didn't have time to look around in the water."
Constable Jeremy Smith says Mr Drabble used his phone after setting off the emergency beacon, to notify a friend in Dampier of his predicament.
"He got a text message through to one of his friends in Hampton Harbour just saying my boat has sunk and I'm in my tender," he said.
The distress beacon was picked up by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority in Canberra which sent two boats and an aircraft to search for him.
Two other boats then joined the search.
The authority's Carly Lusk says he was found early this morning.
"The Dornia aircraft located the man in his dinghy and the police vessel being the fastest vessel proceeded to the scene," he said.
"He's not injured, they've taken him onboard and towed his dinghy back to Dampier.
She says Mr Drabble is a very lucky man.
"Without his EPIRB we wouldn't have known about it, so he's done the right thing; he's got his distress beacon, he's set it off, obviously he was in his dinghy, he was safe and sound and he did all the right things," she said.

New Rescue Boat Damaged
Submitted by carnarvonite on Tue, 2011-11-15 20:38Was shown a few pics on Friday of One Arm point /Oomboolgarri'"s new 8 .5 metre Air rider rescue boat sitting on the dirt in a mangled heap just south of Mt Newman.
Was being transported up there when the driver had to swerve, hit the gravel and jackknifed the trailer, rolling the boat as a result.
Heaps of damage and they are not sure if it can be repaired.
Will try to get hold of the pics to add to the site

Crunching turf
Submitted by wayneleech on Sun, 2011-11-13 18:29
hi all,
I've just finished laying some artificial turf. I compacted a load of blue metal dust under the turf and laid the turf directly on top of the blue metal. It's come up pretty good though now when I walk on the grass I can feel the blue metal dust crunching under my feet....
Is there something I've done wrong of is this usually how it is? I thought of putting a small bed of sand between the blue metal dust and the turf to get rid of the crunching noise..??
Any advice would be appreciated…
Cheers
