furuno tech help needed

gday all

wondering if anyone here can help me out last year i purchased a furuno 585 off a member with a 1kw tranny to upgrade from my older furuno rdp 131 1kw (nav net 1722c i think) .

now the tranducers are both transom mount  and the same shape but are different in thickness the old one has the tag on the cable but the new thinner one does not i have looked at the airmar site and it does not have the m256 on site.

the old unit had gain 0-100 and i ran that on 22-28 for 20-50m of water for dhuies and have fished for hapuka on the shelf and it was ok in 380m with higher gain.

however the new transducer i fitted with the 585 i have found needs to run gain about 7 out of 10 to fish 20-50m . i am asking for help because after the recent shelf pics (harro/buxey) i am planning a trip out wide before the ban (weather permitting) and hoping someone can shed some light on this so i dont get out there and have to fish blind because i have the wrong transducer on .

the tag on the old one reads    airmar   sealcast m256  pn:41-140-1-01  rev01  customer part#:152900 .

any help appreciated   thanks.

Structure Scan Screen Shots

Hi All

As some of you would know I've just upgrade some of my electronics, I went out on the weekend for a spin in a local creek(as it was blowing 20+knots)to have a play with the new gear. As with everything it takes some time to learn, well it does for me anyway!! Thought some of you maybe interested in how the structure scan performed. The creek I tested it in does not have much structure but I was suprised at what I seen remembering that its the first time I've used it, cant wait until I learn to fine tune.

I have tried to explain how to read the screen shots in the below pic. I'm still learning myself but you should get the idea

Interesting that I had trolled over this small hole over the years and never knew it was a drain.

I'll do a full post on the Simrad once I get out and learn what its all about.

Cheers

Hi everyone, Hope someone can advise me what could be wrong with my 150hp johnson 1993 2 stroke. Starts fine at home, runs ok until warm and then starts overoiling out thru the prop. Yes it is a VRO and no I dont want to disconnect it. Any help would be appreciated. A friend of mine suggested I should wait till I get her in the water and take it for a good long run, does this sound right?

Regional work desperately needed!!!

Hey guys this is an extremely long shot, but I'm throwing it all out there at the moment -

I have an Irish friend who's a great chick, a hard worker and has a helluva sense of humour. She is here in a first year working holiday visa, and has been working for the same company for the last 6 months or so. They promised to sponsor her, took all the paperwork from her etc.

Anyways, she's just found out that they have screwed her over royally. She needs regional work desperately to stay in the country on a second year visa!!

Like I said, I know its a long shot, but I'm not too keen on her getting kicked out, if you know what I mean.

Please if anyone knows or may know of anything, even someone to talk to, don't hesitate to PM me!!

Thanks a lot,

Chris

Kayaker dragged out to sea by shark

'It was just like Jaws': Angler on kayak is dragged nearly two kilometres out to sea after hooking 1.8m shark off Devon coast

A vet fishing from a kayak was dragged nearly two kilometres out to sea after hooking a 1.8 metre shark.

Rupert Kirkwood, 51, was towed around for 15 minutes after a 31.7kg shark took his bait and headed for the deep.

He had been fishing 1.6 kilometres off the coast of Ilfracombe, North Devon, in his 4.8metre kayak when he hooked the 31.7kg shark.

had been fishing a mile off the coast of Ilfracombe, North Devon, in his 16ft kayak when he hooked the five-stone shark.

The angler said he had been sitting in his vessel for about four hours before he felt a huge pull on the line and his canoe 'suddenly shot off through the water'

'It was pretty hair-raising stuff. I had been sitting there for about four hours before I felt a huge pull on the line and my canoe suddenly shot off through the water.

'These creatures are known to do a runner and it's just like Jaws - the line flew off the reel.  I just had to hold on and wait for it to tire. Eventually it did, and I was able to lean in the water and pull it on board.

'You have to handle them very carefully and I nestled my hand under the tail and pectoral fin before landing it.  The weight was incredible. I had to be extra careful as one snap of the jaws and I could easily lose a finger or hand.  It was thrashing around on the kayak before eventually becoming quite still.'

The Tope shark was released back into the water unharmed.  Rupert added: 'It was thrilling to catch something that big and knocks spots off anything I have landed before.

'It was amazing to catch such a large specimen and was a real rush.'

Tope Shark are found all around the world and generally live further out into the sea but can come in close to the shore. They sometimes live in small schools and are listed as a vulnerable species.

Who wants a cheap yacht??

Burrup Fertilisers' receivers have more than doubled their claim against Pankaj Oswal after further investigations of the company's accounts and are now alleging that the fertiliser tycoon pilfered $212.9 million from the business.

PPB Advisory's fresh claims of an additional $117.1 million in "wrongful payments" using Burrup Fertilisers funds include more alleged instances of Mr Oswal siphoning money into family companies, partly through the issue of vastly inflated invoices.

The original compensation claim in March was for $95.7 million.

Mr Oswal's lawyer, Melbourne barrister Peter Collinson, indicated he might apply to strike out some of the new allegations.

He told the Federal Court in Perth that it appeared PPB's legal team had "simply gone through BFPL (Burrup Fertilisers) accounts and any payments to entities they can't understand they have put down as wrongful payments by Mr Oswal".

PPB is alleging Mr Oswal breached his statutory and fiduciary duties as a Burrup Fertilisers director.

The new claims include $60 million in alleged kickbacks in the form of overpayments, including a $35.8 million invoice for $5.7 million of engineering work.

Mr Oswal has denied the allegations and launched a cross claim suing PPB for $491 million he alleges he is owed in cost overruns.

PPB's legal team will also apply for the forced judicial sale of a $3 million luxury yacht moored in Peppermint Grove that Mr Oswal bought with Burrup Fertilisers' funds.

What's happening to the Taj Mahal in Perth????

Exmouth News

For those not up to date on what is happening around Exmouth, here’s a bit of news:

Rio Tinto have begun the process to start FIFO work from town with 15 jobs to start in November and with plans for expansion to numbers around the 100 mark, possibly more depending upon the success of the operation.

There is a new Limestone out-loading facility being built at Two Rocks (Light Industrial Area) which is expected to run out to the 4-6m line with possible plans of expansion depending upon the success of the venture, but rumours have it that building will commence next week and the areas surrounding for loading have already been cleared.  There are already serious limestone stockpiles there ready to go.

The Tantabiddi boat ramp funds have been allocated and ramp design finished, apparently work on this is going to start very soon according to the Shire News Letter.

Chevron or a subsidiary of Chevron have either bought or are leasing the Kailis factory site and this is going to be a work base for the off-shore industry (anyone who knows more accurate details on this, please feel free to fill us in) starting soon, all the Kailis boats are being fitted out to be process fish/prawns on the boat for next season.

There’s also some other news about, but it’s a bit early for it to be published – but things are looking the goods for up here!

Most importantly, the weekend before last saw some very big blue marlin raised and hooked (not landed though) and several striped marlins were hooked and landed with one boat having a pod of three 80-100kg stripes come up.  It shouldn’t be long before the sails hit the gulf and what is even better, the water temps are on the way up and rumours have it that one local did well spearing yesterday in crystal gulf water (even after it blew all day long)

Cheers,

Adam

Need a steel fabricator/welder

Anyone out there a steel fabricator or welder? Basically need a length of around 70cm square tube steel welded to a frame and powder coated. Only three cuts and three welds required. Or alternatively does anyone know a good place to get it done that isnt going to charge me a stupid price?

Cheers Buz.

Fishwatch Works!

 Fishwatch (1800 815 507) works!

The boys and I spotted some illegal crabs being caught at Claremont Jetty last night.
Watched in disgust for a hour or so thinking I should say "hey put them back" - then they called their mates (Food Hall must close at 9.00pm)
So now there is 8 of them pinching under size blue swimmers

Called Fishwatch at 9.20pm Fisheries Officers on site 9.40pm.

Bet they don't have crab patties tonight!

The chap on the phone said there is now 12 officers 24/7 on call around WA who can attend to the public tip offs

If you ever see people not following the fishing rules call 1800 815 507 Fishwatch WA

my past experiences with Fishwatch have been similar and just as effective.

Kids were impressed with action! And they caught a heap of blowies!

valuable pearl industry off Abrolhos

New research has identified Akoya pearl production in the Abrolhos Islands is set to become another jewel in Western Australia’s crown.

Fisheries Minister Norman Moore was briefed today on the Abrolhos Akoya Pearl Project results in Geraldton.

Mr Moore said the project was established by industry in 2007 to examine the technical feasibility and economic viability of Akoya pearl production.

“Testing the commercial potential of Akoya pearl oysters has demonstrated the future potential for production of high-quality pearls for the region, which will enable Western Australian producers to capitalise on the pearl market,” he said.

“What had been learned from monitoring the growth and performance of the trial shells during the project will help industry to identify the best management practices at various sites to benefit different stages of pearl culture. This will in turn reduce culture costs and further enhance pearl values.

“The project demonstrates the benefits of collaboration between pearl producers, scientists and specialists who combined to achieve these outcomes.”

Japan previously held the largest Akoya market but production is declining and China is rapidly becoming a major producer of low cost Akoya pearls.

The Minister said there was a commercial opportunity for larger, higher quality pearls to be produced in the Abrolhos area.

The Abrolhos Islands pearling industry operates on aquaculture leases granted by the WA Department of Fisheries. The $686,064 research project was funded by the Australian Government through the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC).

Some Xtreme news from Xtreme Coolers

Hi all

There has been a few things going on over the past few months.

Firstly, we have landed a new container and are once again fully stocked. Fishwrecked members get a standard 10% discount on all boxes in the Xtreme Coolers range. There will also be sales throughout the year that are great value.

The container that has just arrived included the new 20litre beer cooler which i am sure Lamby is very happy about. Hope to be down there in two weeks Liam and i can deliver your prize.

We really enjoy the site, the people and the information on it.

With this in mind, i have been in discussions with Ryan from Oceanside Tackle and Marine in O'Connor.

Ryan will be stocking some of the Xtreme range which will make it very easy to get an Xtreme Cooler. Prices are the same and you also get to see what Ryan has on offer for FW members in the shop when you head there to check out the Xtreme stock at Oceanside.

We still have the warehouse in Mount Lawley where you can view and purchase the Xtreme Range. The website will be updated soon which will outline all of the new prices and products available.

To get a price for the box you need, simply PM or ring Dave on 0403978583.

So, with summer approaching, now is the time to start thinking about an upgrade or new cooler. Put us to the test both in price and service and join the Xtreme club.

looking to meeting many more of you this season and can't wait for the FW comp in March/April.

Toyota Surf fuel leak help

I know its not fishing related but its my mates fishing vehicle.

It is a Toyota surf 2.4 non turbo diesel and has fuel dripping from behind the injector pump and running down towards the back of the pump.

Tried all the fittings and the allen key drain plug? plus the injector return line and all are tight. The higher the revs the bigger the leak.

Extreme kayaking

Jesse Coombs, 40, took kayaking to the extreme when he became the first person to successfully kayak down the 30metre Abiqua Falls in Oregon, US.

Capturing the exact moment Jesse plummeted down the 30m high waterfall was extreme sports photographer and videographer, Lucas Gilman.
Together the pair hiked to the remote waterfall where they prepared for one of their toughest challenges.

Daredevil kayaker Jesse Coombs goes over the top of the 30m waterfall and below, the yellow kayak can just be made out as the nose enters the water at the bottom of Abiqua Falls in Oregan, U.S.

Before Jesse, only one person had ever attempted to kayak down this waterfall - athlete Tim Gross who landed badly and dislocated both his knees.   But despite the risks, determined Jesse positioned himself in his kayak at the top of the near vertical waterfall and plummeted into the pool below.

Plunging down the waterfall in just three seconds, Lucas faced the mammoth task of capturing Jesse's dizzying descent on camera.

Using five cameras including three video cameras each positioned at various points, Lucas watched nervously as Jesse dived into the pool below and miraculously escaped without serious injury.  It took two days to prepare for the shot, to ensure Jesse would not get hurt.

'We had to set up a zip line to capture the fall at the right angle and there were certain safety procedures we needed to put in place, which included positioning two kayakers in the pool below which was tricky.

Mr Coombs surfaces from the whitewater at the bottom of the waterfall. There were two kayakers in the pool to ensure that he did not get trapped underwater

Coming back to the surface: Mr Coombs appears unscathed from the whitewater at the bottom of the waterfall. There were two kayakers in the pool to ensure that he did not get trapped underwater and drown

'Abiqua Falls isn't the highest waterfall but it is considered the hardest.  The lip of Abiqua Falls is very tricky, going from flat to vertical very quickly, so getting the right angle to hit the water is really hard.  Hitting the falls at the wrong angle can risk serious injury.

'There were definitely some nerves there but you just have to remember you're there to document it and hope for the best.'

Jesse didn't escape completely unscathed he suffered a fractured shoulder socket and a collapsed lung.

But just one week after Jesse's successful attempt in April this year, kayak world record holder, Tyler Bradt suffered a broken back after attempting the same waterfall.

There were fears that Bradt, who holds the record for kayaking down the highest waterfall at  55m, would never walk again but he is now making a full recovery.

Jesse said: 'This waterfall comes with heavy consequences so not many people have attempted it.  Three world class kayakers have attempted Abiqua Falls and all three of us have been injured to some degree.

'It's not the tallest waterfall but it's definitely considered one of the most dangerous.

'To fall 30m takes around three seconds, so there is not much room for error.

'But knowing I'd nailed it gave me a huge feeling of elation.'
