My experience with Navico/Lowrance

A couple of weeks back when out for a dive my HDS 5 combo GPS froze on me. Turning the unit off then on fixed it for about 30 seconds each time. After trying unsuccesfully to install the latest updates I called Navico (thanks for that advice Steve) who ran me through a couple of potential fixes over the phone that didnt work.

Next stop was off to a dealer (BIAS in Claremont where I bought it) to get them to install the updates. They had no success so Navico said send the unit to them. A week and a half later I got a brand new unit back from Navico as they were unable to fix the problem - whatever caused it I dont know.

No receipt, no questions just a straight up new unit. Was impressed with both Navico and BIAS service all round.

Sydney International Boat Show

For the last 2weeks, I've been over in Sydney with work, and as today was finally a day off, I went down to the Sydney International Boat Show in Darling Harbour for a bo-peep.

Comparing it to the Perth show, my first impression was bloody hell theres a lot of people here!! In any of the 6 pavillions it was a struggle to walk down the aisles. There may be talk of another economic slow-down but obviously us boaties/fishos still want to spend and enjoy the hobby. There were many sellers with fishing gear for sale, and the appeared to be doing a roaring trade on low end gear.

Saw stella sw's on sale for the following prices:

10000 $900,  8000 $850,  5000 $750, 1000 $540.

Solas (the propeller people) had an interesting stand with their wizard tackle range, and also had Japanese suppliers out  for the Miya Epoch electric reels. They even had one of the electric reels completely submerged in a fish tank to show they work underwater. Had 8 models on display, with a CX8S combo incl fully rollered game rod with rollered swival tip & extra bent butt, yamashita shock absorber, S/steel safety strap, Completely loaded with Japanese braid of your b/s choice, 300lb deep water terminal rig kit to make 5 rigs c/w crimpers, plus a few  extra bits n bobs for $2280. As I've never looked into these electric reels, I dont know if this deal is any good or not, but thought I'd list it here for interest sake as I know some F/W members are into these electric reels.

Spent many hours looking through the floating palaces on the water, and found the pick of the bunch I reckon:

Its a Formula Cruiser, Icon 54. Magnificently appointed vessel, and this one has been outfitted to the owners Big game requirements.  I didn't have 2.1mill in my pocket, so I carefully wiped up my drool, and silently moped away!

All in all, a great way to spend the day, considering I couldnt go fishing ova here! (And the weathers been bloody fantastic for fishing this last week over here!!)

Cheers.

Browny.

doing up my 5.1m "shark"cat :-) NEARLY DONE

So i purchased my cat off joe amato a fellow fw member in december 2010 and had a few plans to make her a bit neater..

my mate ownes a panelbeating shop and with a bit of nagging he got my boat in for a full spray and i thought i would do everything else while it was on peices

doing a restore on a boat is similar to doing a house reno the list just gets bigger and more expensive its like i have opened a can of worms.

b.o.a.t = bring on another thousand -alright

 .

all i really have left to do is

new

- clears

- led light up front and back

- a couple of fw stickers

- and a few decals

- stere-ere-o

- rego stickers

and considering building an alloy fuel tank instead of plastic fantastic

but i am sure i am missing something

anyway what do you all think so far?

the pics are obviously in order of stripping and putting back and i will add more as i do more

cheers hemi

The West - Page 10 - greenies at it again

Just choked on my breckie when reading the west. Large advert from Saveourmarinelife.org.

They ask us to make a submission to www.saveourmarinelife.com.au , so why don't we and enlighten some of these rich know alls who know nothing about our marine environment.

Pity we don't have rich supporters so we can place a full page ad.

You tube vid

No more Liquor Barons for me

Not really fishing related, but beer and fishing kind of go together.

Just stoped at Liquor Barons in Carlisle to get a carton of Coopers Pale Ale which was supposed to be on sale for $44.99 which I thought is dollar or two cheaper than usual. So I picked up my carton to hear $46 at the counter. “It should be $45”, I said. “No, extra dollar for cold one mate, we pay $6000 every months for electricity”, the answer was. WTF? Well, it’s not really my problem, what your overheads are, is it? The board didn’t say “warm” and come on, it’s not like you buy this carton for $43 or so, I thought… Anyway, I payed that, because I dried out of beer at home. I will just make sure I will not come back. I hope that my “extra” dollar will help you with your power bill, Liquor Barons, because it was the last one you got from me.

I am sorry for my Friday whinge, but what happened with the old customer service and valuing the customer?

Sugarloaf getting a massive belting!!!!

Well headed down to dunno and yallingup for changes to get some shots around the area. Wanted so great stormy shots at sugarloaf.

I arrvived there around 7am and in all my life i have never seen the ocean so rough!!!!! Massive rolling waves and waves acually bracking over the top of sugarloaf.

I found it so hard to get a shot because of how hard the wind was and all the spray from the waves not to mention the rain. Salvaged these two shots. So spewin i didnt get any long exposure shots. Oh well next time....

Hi all.

It is time for a special on the smallest boxes we have at the moment. I have two specials for the FW community.

1: XT27litre marble

This is an excellent performer for its size. The 27litre is very well insulated and is part of the standard range. It features a thick recessed lid, two welded hinges, stainless latches and carry handles.

Price:$75.00 for FW members save $18.00

2: XT50litre cube marble

This cooler belongs to the new cube range which features a new recessed hinge, stainless latches, support bars, carry handles and a design that provides extra height in a compact design.

Price: $130.00 for FW members save $25.00

Plus: purchase the 27 of 50litre cooler and get free delivery (postage) in the metro area.

Both models are excellent for the tinny, the back of the car, a bait box or food/drinks box for the boat or family. They are very versitile and come fully insulated.

To take advantage of the special offer, call or Pm Dave on 0403978583 with any questions regarding the free postage or dimensions. Offer ends on the Sunday the 7th of August 2011.

Photo's 1,2,3: 27litre. 4,5: 50litre.

Happy fishing

Man lost at sea off Carnarvon

A man has disappeared just out from Pelican point at Carnarvon while swimming from the back of an anchored trawler to a dinghy that floated off after its rope broke.

The accident happened about 1.30 pm Wednesday. Carnarvon sea rescue's 2 boats along with  another 5 boats taking part in the search along with a helicopter and fixed wing plane without success and again in crappy conditions this morning with 5 boats this morning.

We wil be out again tomorrow morning in what we hope will be the best conditions so far. The water has turned back to flood brown with zero visibility and is making things difficult

Where can I get one of these?

Anyone know where I can get one of these in Australia?

They only seem to have them in US. Even something similar would be awesome but with a bench like that?

Shithouse

I can't believe that a new member has joined and taken the time to say G'day at tell us something about himself and no one has replied or said hello. He's even taken the time to fill out his profile. I've noticed 103 reads at last count. Pretty crappy effort fellas

Centre console conversion

Looks like I'm buying myself a little project. Earlier model Mustang fibreglass hull with windscreen and foredeck that needs chopping and changing to a centre console. Very solid & reliable hull on a good new Dunbier and a near new ETec so it should be worth the effort. Just wondering if anyone has experience doing a similar conversion and can pass on any tips. Also where is the go for buying the console and Ttop etc. I will post some pictures as it progresses.

Thanks guys.

Three pulled from water after boat swamped

We, Carnarvon sea rescue got a call yesterday to head over to the islands and bring back three anglers whose boat had been swamped. They were anchored in about 20-30 metres of water when they copped a wave over the stern of the  boat and another one straight after filling the boat and causing it to capsize, tossing the three in to the water.

Luckily there was another boat not far off that noticed the esky floating off then realised that the boat wasn't there any more and sped over to pull them out. Because it was so quick they didn't even have time to grab life jackets or the epirb .

They managed to save all the stuff that was floating but sadly the boat is on the bottom in 20 metres of water.

Saturday fishing

Well after a quick chat at the ramp with Matty and crew we all headed of with the  forcast being good  calm conditions were expected .On arrival at the first spot the wind was around 15knots and swell were making the water quite lumpy. After a couple of hours things were not looking good for the ice box was still empty with only one sargent baker and a cuttlefish to show .We headed north a few miles and found some fish on  the  sounder . A soon as lines hit the bottom we were getting fish not big ones but it was a start after a few drifts Jesse hooked the fish of the day only to be cut of on the coral after a minute into the fight .After lunch we headed in as we couldn't see conditions improving. The swell had pick up and some nice breakers were rolling over the three mile ,and close to shore the wind had dropped .Finished the day with 10 dhuies biggest around 7kg.1x Black bum 1 baldie and a couple of cuttlefish .Got another  tagged dhuie tagged 56 days ago grown 10mm still in the same area it was tagged.
