Pics from the early days...
Submitted by Rob H on Wed, 2016-09-07 22:56Not even sure why Im putting these up here, maybe us old fuckers like looking in the rear view mirror too much?
Came across a heap more old photos, for anyone who has an interest.
These span from mid 90's charters in Coral bay, late 90's and 2000's longlining for swordies tuna and later sharks.
First boat I ever skippered, the Norstar (otherwise known as the Snorestar
)
That blue handled Fdick knife travelled with me everywhere, until about a year back when a scabby seagul knocked it overboard at the Abrolhos

Hows this for a blast from the past...

Swiss Danny, a top bloke and gun decky. Through the wonders of Facebook still in contact and he has an olive grove and chalets in Tuscany.
One of those incredible coincidences-in about 1999, Boxing Day I flew into Zurich to visit my sister and literally bumped straight into him in the airport, 10 seconds either way and I wouldnt have known...

Coral Bay, mid 90's

A good mate, who has long since passed, Bill Gibbings from Albany
EDIT-on closer inspection it is actually Vin!

One of my ace deckies, who went on to make 5 more ace deckies for me

This pic is the early days on the little Starfire, a 48 ft Westcoaster
Unloading my home port Geraldton

Starfire heavily loaded with bigeye, YF and swords

Radio beacon crushed from being dragged down very deep by big fish.
I like this pic, maybe just triggers a subliminal memory of a happy day amongst the grindingly hard work you dont see or something?

Killing a tuna

and thats it for now, later maybe Ill chuck up some more if there is any interest, or just put them on Farcebook otherwise

Lifting boat off trailer - new product
Submitted by bradz on Wed, 2016-09-07 10:40Hi guys
Ive come across this product which I am probably going to buy. It looks like a damn good idea...if not a little expensive. Has anybody seen or used one of these before? It allows you to jack the boat off the trailer and then remove the trailer safely. The screw jacks will also allow for easy raising and lowering when adjusting bunks and rollers on the trailer.
boatstands.com/product/manual-boat-lifting-system/
I have started my project boat (I'll only post pics and details once I have finished, just in case I completely stuff it up) and will need something similar to help remove the boat from the trailer, build a cradle underneath, and then place it back gently afterwards.
Is this something any of you lot would be interested in using after I have finish with it? Mind you, I intend to have boats and trailer for many years to come so I have no doubt I'll use it at least a few more times after this job.

How lucky was this
Submitted by sunshine on Mon, 2016-09-05 13:40Anchored in the Sound around well south of the D9 last night, when retrieving the anchor this came up, nearly an expensive trip. Sounder was alight with fish but not a single touch other than a huge blue swimmer crab that fell off at the side of the boat .....oh well you can't have everything

Hot smoking anyone into it.
Submitted by roddo on Sun, 2016-09-04 20:54Im thinking about building an offset smoker for the patio was thinking pizza oven originally but a big meat cooker would probably be more suited. we love our bbqs and do quite a bit of entertaining.
Anyone on here have one or made one before.
And what woods have you experimented with.
Pic attached is similar to what im thinking

Bit the bullet
Submitted by Dale on Sun, 2016-09-04 09:59Well as some would know, I've gone out and bought Hezzy's dinghy from him. Hoping to get out into the sound before the pinky closure comes around, but if not, there's always next year. Already got a nice little dragonfly sounder gps combo for it, battery and electrics next, floor to go in soon and a couple of other mods over time. But it's been far too long, so here's to some good fishing.

2016/17 Western Warriors
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Wed, 2016-08-31 12:13Surely this HAS to be our year in the Shield?
JL two seasons ago on the eve of our last final appearance in 2015 after also making it the previous year said that he was less interested in winning that final than he was in building a dynasty and I reckon now is the time to start cashing on what has been a brilliant program of developing a youthful side with a mix of experience and full of WA talent rather than repeat the mistakes for the previous 20 years.
NCN is ruled out for at least the first half of the season and you’d think he’d struggle to come back from lumbar stress fractures (which hurts us with the ball, in hte field and with the bat) but that still leaves us Dorf, Paris, Turner, Moody, Agar, Mackin, Rimington and AJ Tye (who I am not convinced is a 4 day bowler). You can also throw Cartwright and Bosisto into that mix as guys that can take wickets. The key will be to keep the big Dorf injury free which provides a very good framework for an attack that will regularly take 20 wickets. Can JL convince Mitch Johnson to play Shield cricket after the BBL… yes please JL.
Our batting is where we’ll need to pick up this year and we are at the mercy of the Australian selectors with SMarsh (just broke his finger and probably get dropped after dominating as usual), Voges (who I think they will transition out of the side soonish) and Bancroft who is likely to replace Burns if he fails to make runs and soon. You can all but book MMarsh in for a full summer for Australia. I’d love to see Bosisto keep grinding out the runs but in doing so not giving his wicket away and see Cartwright build on his form last year and his recent handy batting in the recent NPS. Agar is fast becoming a batting all-rounder and Turner is no mug and Klinger and Whiteman making big runs in the middle order may well hold the key to allowing guys like Agar and Turner to play their natural game and score quick runs and get those bonus points which is so important in the 4 day format.
Bring the Shield back where it belongs lads.

Masters - closure
Submitted by Bodie on Tue, 2016-08-30 12:34Most are probably aware masters is closing down come 11th December.
They have started dropping prices on everything, everything is minimum 10% off at the moment, with some things marked down 30-40%. Wood, cabinets and some larger items were 30-40% off at the moment. None of the power tools were more than 10%
Was at the bayswater superstore this morning and barely a free car park and people walking out with trollies filled!
Worth a look for those who are chasing bits and pieces. From what i understood they are still receiving goods from warehouses that need emptying.
Thought might be of interest to a few on here and save a few bucks to spend on more fishing shit!

AFL trade talk - 2016 thread
Submitted by randall df223 on Tue, 2016-08-30 11:28Thought i would commence a thread to cover the AFL trade and draft periods as it seems the clean outs are already starting.
Two plus a retirement from Carlton and Cloke has requested a trade.
Freo obviously lose the Pav, but i expect (and hope) there will be many more! I'll call 15 changes to Freo's senior and rookie list.

AFL finals knockout tipping comp
Submitted by Deleted on Tue, 2016-08-30 10:01Chasing a minimum of 10 punters who want to enter into a knockout AFL finals tipping comp.
$5 to enter, payable into my netbank account prior to the bounce of the ball first final. Winner takes all.
Rules:
THIS IS A TACTICAL tipping comp please read and understand the rules
Put your tip in this thread and I'll edit them into the post each round. Tips arent usually secret in this type of comp.
You must tip one team (one team only) that you think will win in the first round. If your team loses you're out.
Correct tippers move onto round 2.
You cannot tip the same team twice during the comp i.e. if you think sydney will play off in and win the GF you cant tip them in the first 3 rounds.
Strategy and luck is required.
Last punter standing wins the total pot. A margin will be used if 2 players end up on same team in final round
If we have multiple tippers still alive in the Grand Final round, we will also include a margin for that game to dicide the winner. Closest to the pin will win the prize.
Who's keen?
Enter your names below.
once we have the numbers i will PM everyone bank details, remember money will have to be in account before the first final or confirmation of transfer to participate.

Gun Clubs NOR
Submitted by Ben85 on Mon, 2016-08-29 17:04Just after some advice with regards to gun licenses and gun clubs. I'd appreciate any advice that any shooters may be able to provide.
I want to join up with a gun club preferably north of the river that would tick the below boxes:
I don't have a firearm license however over the next few months I'd like to apply for one (rifle and shotgun - Category A?)and buy my own guns. Ideally the club would provide a club support letter and firearm safety course. I understand you don't simply become a member, rather there is generally a probation period?
I want to shoot both rifles and shotguns - so the club would need to cater for both.
Obviously I want to join a good club with good people.
I'd appreciate any feedback.
cheers/Ben

Jails must be full.
Submitted by quadfisher on Sat, 2016-08-27 08:24Quite disheartning to read this morning , with all the robberies reported on here, and some assaults
of innocent fishermen , let alone this low lifes actions and long long list of offences , it does make you wonder what it takes to lock someone up , and for the future of our state.
If you were a arresting officer , you would be fuming.
We are getting the society we deserve if good people dont stand up and make there voice heard on crime , and how
its delt with in this state.

Farewell Pav (No footy commentary this week??)
Submitted by randall df223 on Fri, 2016-08-26 11:43Did a scan down the forums, cant see one for the footy.
Apologies if i have missed it.
Just want to say farewell to the great man Pav, and thanks for the memories.
His retirement speech to the playing group is on Docker TV. It is a nice little glimpse of the quality of leader he is.
I think it will be a while before we see a replacement of his quality evolve at Freo.

Evapack Cryovac storage issues
Submitted by mrwinta on Thu, 2016-08-25 03:39I bought an Evapack cryo machine a while ago and most of the seals don't hold unless I dry the fillets and cleaning the inside of the bag which can be time consuming and very frustrating. It also restricts me from sealing things like marinated steak or chicken etc. Even after carefully drying you can see the liquid from the meat or fish fillet being slowly drawn up the bag and into the machine.
I have tried various of brands of bag/ roll and even tried various bag sizes incase that has an effect but this doesn't seem to matter. The vac time seems to be about 15 seconds regardless and the adjustable sealing time doesn't make any difference to the quality of the seal.
Is it normal to have to do this or am I doing it wrong?

Your Olympic moment so far...
Submitted by Red Dog on Tue, 2016-08-16 19:35Young Kyle Chalmers taking out the gold has to rate a mention for me and watching Usain Bolt win the 100 was awesome.
But to see those big Fijian fellas singing after their win in the rugby with tears running down their faces takes the cake for me.
What's your favourite Olympic moment so far?
