lost brilliant fishing spots
Submitted by petermac on Wed, 2017-03-08 20:11why do we put up with the lose of our historic land based fishing platforms eg Robbs jetty , great spot for tailor back in the day , still remeber those days kero lanterns and ding sangas , carnarvon jetty (well the last 150 meters of it) burnt by shit heads and probably the best mulloway spot in wa in its day , sampson jetty yes flattened by a cyclone but could have been rebuilt , it was a spot you could catch a big spanish mackeys with out needing a boat , i can remember the days you could drag the swan on a stinking hot saturday night for prawns with the bonous of a few cobbler in the net and your dad would always put you on the deep end of the drag net ahh bugger i am getting old

Freshwater Stingrays
Submitted by Noxious on Wed, 2017-03-08 16:46G'day
Figure there would be some fish keepers on the site, I have found over the years that the two hobbies tend too overlap at times.
I have been keeping and breeding stingrays for the last 5 years. Started out with just regular Motoro's and went from there. At the moment I have 4x (1m 3F) hybrid rays - Mantilla X Motoro X Leopoldi. Really enjoy the hybrids as they morph and change a lot as they mature. Always interesting to see pups change as they grow, picking a winner out of a group of pups can be challenging and it takes a keen eye to spot potential at a young age.
FW Rays are a lot more maintenance then your average aquarium fish - their prehistoric digestive/metabolic system produces a lot of waste ammonia - filtration needs to be top notch and they can be particularly sensitive to poor water quality.
This is my boy, currently just shy of 12months old and about 25cm across the disk. Should be a great breeding stud. His claspers have just started to roll (sign of maturity) and should be fully mature in the next 6 months time. Still has some morphing left in him.

Manual Brake Bleeding kit
Submitted by Dale on Sun, 2017-03-05 07:41G'day guys, looking for one of these kits to change out the brake fluid on my Subaru, this is my dinghy tow car. Anyone used one of these kits they can recommend? There's a lot of comments out there and a lot of negative stuff, and it's definitely a case of getting what you pay for. But for a one off job, I don't want to pay a huge amount.

Who has a bullet boat or similar shape hull and where have you mounted you sounder transducer?
Submitted by Leigh85 on Tue, 2017-02-28 21:09Hi all,
I am looking for some advise WRT transducer mounting position, looking at the instructions everything looks good, but once I reach approx 10kts in anything deeper than 8m the picture goes to shit.
The hull is on quite a sharp angle so can't sit as flush as my old trailcraft, just want to see where/how everyone else has mounted theirs.
using a Lowrance Hook9 with a 80/200 transducer
Cheers

Fisheries vs Cray Divers (Bret)
Submitted by Rob H on Mon, 2017-02-27 22:23 Tomorrow morning in the Supreme Court, Bret Carters case will be heard.
I believe in Court 7 at 10 am at the Supreme court ( Barrack and St Georges Tce) for 2 hours
Im away at work, but Id urge anyone around there to go in for support.
There is alot at stake for divers/fishers in general but especially for Bret personally above all.
He has had the courage to stand up to being bullied by Fisheries Officers, and Ive got my fingers crossed that the limitless resources of Fisheries dont over ride common sense and the average bloke.

Mulching is good for you!
Submitted by Ashen on Fri, 2017-02-24 16:44Two weeks ago, the missus asked me to mulch her front garden. She promised a nice boating related present. Hearing that, I put in the effort in 35deg heat to make the front smiiickkkk!
Today, I received this:

It's a Plueger Salt 60SW series 2 reel with Pflueger illusion 6-10kg 2 piece rod. Awesome!!
Not sure what line I should put on it. Main use for it will be for demersals. I'm thinking 30lb braid? Guys who have the same reel or previous Salt 60 version, what line do you have on it and capacity?

Caribbean Reef Runner
Submitted by Darren253 on Thu, 2017-02-23 13:31I’ve sold my beloved 6m Stessl. It was great and tough boat but not quite right for us as a family/fishing rig. It rode hard in the chop (really hard) and has a very narrow waterline for a 6m boat which made it surprisingly tippy. The ride was improved with some ballast (100kg) in the nose but still rough. After only a few months the misses and family were reluctant to go out in less than perfect weather which rarely happens here and as such it became only my hobby. Whilst I enjoy my boys fishing trips, I’d rather have something we can all want to use on other occasions too (plus it makes planning permission much simpler).
I've ordered a new Caribbean Reef Runner Hull from Mansfield Marine that should be here in a few weeks. I'm buying the boat pretty bare and fitting it out myself where I can. I really enjoy that kind of stuff and can save a fair amount of coin along the way. The Reefrunner is a solid performer that ticked all of the boxes (except the wife thinks its ugly) plus the resale value seems to be unrivalled when compared to boats of similar sizes should we ever need to sell it.
Caribbean is providing the Hull on a 2200kg ATM C Channel Easytow trailer (Manual hydraulic brakes on both axles). Options from the factory are:
· Stainless steel Rocket Launcher
· Side Clears
· Starboard (Drivers side only seat slider)
· Bunk Infill Cushions
· Port side swim platform with swim ladder
· Starboard side swim platform (No ladder)
I’ve got to fit bilge pump/s, washdown pump, duel batteries, isolators, carpets/matting, sounder/GPSetc once it arrives.
I also kept my furuno fishfinder, bait board, pot tipper, esky, remote mounted VHF, fenders, EPIRB, flares, lines and accessories from my last boat to refit to the Reefie. It’s amazing how much all those small items add up to if you replace them but nobody seems to considers their value when buying secondhand.
Once in Perth, I’m going to get a Merc 150 4stroke fitted. The Merc 150 seems to be well received within the marketplace with strong performance, good torque, lightweight, decent reliability reports (though only 4 years old) from the commercial sector and well-priced. It’s nearly 4k cheaper than a Yamaha.
These hulls can take up to 200hp but the 150 still gives the Reefie a WOT of 37 knots which Perth weather rarely lets you achieve anyway. A 21knot cruise will give a fuel consumption of around 0.45ltr per KM according to their testing. 500km range @ 40km/hr. I’m still shopping between dealers at the moment so any recommendations are gratefully received.
I’ve managed to pick up a Simrad NSS12 Evo 2 from the fishwrecked classified that I intend to install as my MFD. I planned to use it as the controls for the engine but there is very little saving between the cost of the vesselview link box and the actual Mercury vessel view 4” gauge so I might as well opt for the gauge and the NSS for extra screen realestate.
I already have a Furuno 628 that I had installed on my last boat that I will probably reinstall again. I just need to pickup a transducer (sold with other boat).
I would like to have the 3D downscan on the simrad but that will probably have to wait on the list with an anchor winch, stereo, autopilot, freshwater bladder & pump, solar, rear shade and camper setup for overnighters with the kids.
This boat needs to be as appealing for the family to spend a day on the river or Rotto/Carnac as it is for heading off the westend or the trips up north.
I’m looking at installing twin bilge pumps (1 small auto & 1 monster ebay manual) and a through hull intake whilst I’ve got some room prior to batteries etc.
What are people’s thoughts on the suction/pick-up fitting for a deckwash… A flush fitting would be cleaner and less risk on the trailer but the scoop fitting will enable it to be used whilst going along/heading home however could interfere with the trailer? I also read that the constant pressure against the suction of the pump when going along can cause premature seal failure. Thoughts?
Either option will be stainless with a stainless ball valve directly mounted.
I've trawled this site many times over for ideas and research but please share any ideas or lessons learnt you may have picked up along the way.
I'll add picture as and when they come...

running vhf antenna cable and radio power together
Submitted by Paul N on Thu, 2017-02-23 06:54moving the vhf radio to a new location and this would have the antenna cable and radio power cable side by side from the back of the radio for about 1 mtr.
does anyone know if this would impact on the radio performance or is the antenna cable shielded enough that it wouldnt interfere weth performance . There isnt enough room to run the cables any other way.
Cheers
