Cervantes Weekend
Submitted by Heinz on Mon, 2015-08-17 13:09Me n my mate Bads decided to give Cervantes a go on the weekend given the great weather forecast.
Headed up on Saturday morning at gentlemans hours to a light easterly and relatively flat seas.
Went straight out the back and picked up a few Dhuies and Baldies for the esky and then proceeded to muck around with a few sambos as well. Video link below:
www.fishwrecked.com/forum/cervantes-sambo
The water glassed off around 10:00 and we deceided to hit closer reefs for some snapper for a bit of a change.
After a couple of initial drifts to find some lumps we deployed the burley bomb made up of blended herring frames and IT WAS ON!!!!!
Having a drift of 100m every half an hour so meant the fish just followed us and the burley. Floating a bait down and as soon as it got out of sight you were hooked up.
Had a mix Snapper, Sambos and Dhuies all coming up off the bottom to smash our baits. Sounder Porn!!!!
My Snapper went 75cms.
The sun was getting down and we were running out of time so last baits were called and Bads hooked up to something with a lot of weight! Granted he was only using his Stradic 2500 with 8lb line so anything above a herring looks huge. After a massive fight that lasted 10mins or so with huge powerful runs, up popped a decent size Dhuie that went 75cm.
Cruised in at 20-30 knots the whole way with a few cans to celebrate a ripper day!
The next day looked just as good as the following but the tacho shorted out and blew a fuse so we decided to be safe rather than sorry and leave it at one day only.

Ningaloo 2015
Submitted by MattMiller on Mon, 2015-08-17 10:02Hey guys, thought i'd put up a little report from Ningaloo last week.
This is our annual work fishing trip with 14 crew and 3 boats this year. A perk that is simply second to none.
After a tough start with some car and boat trailer issues followed by alot of wind over the first 4 days fishing was tough.
We managed some good pelagics with Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Spanish, YFT and a lone Sailfish (on Hardbody) and various demersals but nothing of great note.
Sharks were a major issue when searching for Reds with most good fish lost.
Here are some of the pelagics.
Then the last 2 days of our stay turned on sensational weather and simply some rediculous deep drop action.
Rubies came thick and fast with the best fish in the 18-20kg bracket along with a cracker Greyband that would had to have been close to 30kg.
We simply had to leave them biting as our Ice Boxes couldn't handle the load and freezer space was filling.
What a finish to the trip and the deep drop action was something i'll never forget.
Happy days!

The Bream I lost
Submitted by grantarctic1 on Mon, 2015-08-17 04:03In this video, I show a spot that was hard to share online. I have hundreds of hours on film, but find it dificult to share without people swarming the area and taking every thing they catch.
If you take the time to watch this clip, you will see the same bait fishing tech's that i posted before. fishwrecked.com/forum/bream-baits-video
And the last video fishwrecked.com/forum/40cm-bream-video was the exact same method of bait fishing for Bream.
Here, I don't land the fish, but is still worth watching as it was the biggest i had seen for the season. Hope you like it, Cheers Grant...

North Metro Good Weather Marathon - Fish and Bags
Submitted by Mick C on Sun, 2015-08-16 21:48After the Wednesday night KGs (http://fishwrecked.com/forum/metro-kgs-0), and the best few days forecast I have seen for a while, it was time to fish – and get the burley experiment going in earnest (http://fishwrecked.com/forum/shredder-ultimate-burley-machine-burley-experiment).
I had been too lazy to ask for deckie assistance so headed out solo on Thursday morning from Hillarys. I have also been too lazy to fish the right times in the mornings this year but did manage to get away before dawn into the mid 20’s before the sun came up. I started to fish a spot that has produced for me before but it is fair to say the going was fairly slow. I’m sure a pilot whale wanted to mate with my boat as it must have surfaced about 30 times within 50 metres. It scared the sh*t out of me a few times by blowing “close” in the still conditions. After an hour or more I had to move to get away from it.
Got to the new spot and burleyed up and it was a whole different story – I do think it had something to do with the high tide (and my burley slick that was heading to South Africa).
Mayhem really and I probably landed 50 odd fish of all different varieties in the next 2-3 hours. Don’t you love it when your floater and bottom rig are going off at the same time and you need to decide which fish is bigger, or more desirable, before taking it on. I kept a size pinkie at 530mm (I very rarely catch size pinkies during the day) and the biggest breaksea (I have “orders” to bring them home) with everything else released. Back in before noon with sore arms from the workout.
I had a message from zOOm about potentially going out on Friday in his boat after our successful mission a month or so earlier (http://fishwrecked.com/forum/zoom-pink). That was a really good day with good company in a nice rig to fish off so I was keen to go again. Since receiving the message, a couple of the dads from my young ones footy team had contacted me about going out on their boat on Friday to show them how to fish nearshore for the pinkies. These dads cop my stream of fish photos at games, and I even had a mum tell me I had to go out with them so the boat gets used and doesn’t just sit in the marina. Mind you, the boat is a 36 Flybridge with all the “trimmings”. Dilemma. After lots of texts and phone calls the Friday plan was hatched. Fish with zOOm from mid-morning to mid/late afternoon, meet the “dads” at the marina about 3.30pm, swap the boats in the pen and head out again, with Michael invited along as well.
I had a bit of family and work stuff to do on Friday morning so got to Hillarys about 10.30am. Prep the boat, load the gear and off we go. Headed south to the Hale Road reefs but that was “flat” so we decided to go to our previous “found” spot and give it a go again. Burley up and it didn’t take too long. Michael and I had another awesome little session on this spot with a constant supply of fish. Tarwine and big skippy were the common species, as well as undesized pinkies and dhu, and we kept a couple of very large tarwine for Nana and the skippy, for other purposes. The highlight however was the 6kg Dhu that I landed on the little Gomoku (we won’t talk about the very large fish that bit Michael off – no it wasn’t really a monster dhu!). We left the fish biting with good times all round.
Back to the marina and we “upgraded” the boat. The SW wind had come up a bit but was no match for this “beast”. As we headed out I “handed over” the coordinates to one of my “proven” nearshore pinkie spots, but with no guarantees. I have found the nearshore pinkies are very hit and miss but trust your technique and the results sometimes happen.
What do you know, they did. Michael was first to hook up on the floater and landed a nice 630mm model. An hour later my bottom rig was smashed and the little Gomoku got its second 5kg+ fish of the day (750mm). Top this off with a few cold ones and a boat cooked pizza on an awesome rig and it was a very nice end to a quality day. It is so good when you guide the mates out and are lucky.
Saturday was the MAAC comp which was postponed from the week before due to the strong wind warning. With the young lady’s netball hiatus, for some unknown reason, she was keen to come along to fish her first comp of the year. With a lot of “lectures” during the week about how there could be no winging and we were going to be out there for 8+ hours with no coming in she was still keen. Even after the 5.45am wake up the look of anticipation said it all.
MAAC comps are all about species so we headed to “Terry’s pike spot” first up. With the burley in the water the herring and pike were on fire and we soon had what we needed (Nana loves her herring and I always fillet them for her after the comps – the only time I ever target them). With a couple of species in the bag, some nearshore sand whiting were next at another spot -a bit slow but everyone got one so we moved on. The easterly was still blowing 15+ kn so we stayed inshore to try and find some tailor on the reefs. After a few unsuccessful attempts we finally found a school feeding on baitfish. We took turns on landing the strikes and I got the first one with a fish over a kilo. Next was the “favorite little deckie” and this was a quality fish. What a pleasure to watch her fight, and learn, with a predator that goes hard. After 10 minutes we got it in the net and at 580mm and 1.54kg it was a quality specimen. We made sure that everyone got one and moved on.
It was a really good start to the comp but when the wind died so did the bite. We headed out into the 20’s and gave the towcam on the downrigger a test. Not quite the best option in a comp but we wanted to make sure the ground we fished had a chance. It was awesome – how can you fault a live feed from the bottom on a split screen with your sounder. We proved it works and will further refine this technique – I will post more stories in the future but the below photo gives the general idea.
We searched a number of spots with no success in the light northerly wind, until a floater was taken. The little deckie was “first up” and she grabbed the rod with a fish on the end that was bigger than anything she had caught before. I must pay credit to Dean and Wal for talking her through the 25 minute fight and the instructions on how to play the fish. No assistance was given but Dean did have his hand on the butt of the rod to ensure the very expensive combo wasn’t dragged out of the hands of a 10 year old girl into the ocean. The delight at landing the 850mm sambo had to be seen to be believed after the work that had been put in to get it on the boat.
What an awesome day for the young deckie. It was topped off by her winning the mini-juniors, juniors and biggest tailor in the comp. And yes, I was outfished by my daughter but loved it – if I could have weighed in fish from the previous days I would have cleaned up, but that’s fishing. Let’s just say I filleted a lot of fish today and our freezer stocks are high after the good weather marathon. Perth metro nearshore is a fishing paradise.

Friday Metro goodness
Submitted by Bodie on Sun, 2015-08-16 19:44After a failed attempt to head out Deep with JohnF on Thursday (Engines issues on my Fury) i hooked up with a mate who just happens to be a pro cray fisherman for a morning trip out in reasonably close chasing some demersals and hopefully some KG's.
Hit up a spot not too far out whilst the wind was just enough to be annoying from the east. 2 of us jigging whilst old mate crayfisherman was skippering! (holding the boat on top of the ground).
First drop we were just off due to the wind, but 2nd drop i got hit on the way down just off the bottom. Was using a 130g Dhu drop and loaded up heavy on my little PE 1.2 Ocea jigger. After about 10 minutes up popped this big boy, no scales on board but measured 96cm so put it around 14kg or so. not bad consdering is was barely light! My biggest on jig to date
Next drop had us with our 2nd dhu of about 5kg so time to move on as we had our limit of dhus. We moved not very far to the inside of a little bit of coral and dropped down some droppers for KG's. Instant success with me hooking an assumed double header (Could see them coming up on the sounder) to lose one half way up. Up popped a nice 51cm KG! you beauty!!
Moved around a bit more and changed back to jigs. Next spot i got hit, nothing too massive so took it slow and to my surpirse up popped this guy on jig!! went 53cm!
Ended up with 2 big KG's on jig which was a first for me.
Moved on again to the next bit of coral where we changed back to droppers with occy for KG's. Something tells me the Dhu stocks are good on this bit of coral!!
Needless to say we moved on straight away, all 3 of these swam off strong as they were bought up super slow.
Ended the day with 4 KG's (2 on jig) 2 dhu's and plenty of other bi catch of small pinks, rat sambos, and other bits and pieces! back to the ramp by lunch!

Mid West Day Trip
Submitted by DBZ on Sun, 2015-08-16 13:57With the weather looking good and a nice northern current hitting the mid west we decided a day trip was in order. Set off Thursday arvo and woke up to epic conditions Friday morn
Got to our destination on sunrise and started with a big sharkie and small Spaniard on the troll. Next strike thrashed on the surface and then took a 250m run right down to the backing on the little Trinidad 20A. Called it for a Wahoo and 15 mins later after a bit of chasing we sunk the gaff into a 28.5kg number. Pretty lucky with 100lb leader and no wire... Good start!
A couple more Spaniards and a little yellowfin rounded out the trolling then we jumped in for a go with the straight hook.
Vis was pretty average around 12-15m and plenty of noahs including a couple of 10ft tigers but they were being fairly well behaved. Macks were in abundance and we put some nice models up to 23kg in the boat.
Next onto the jigging and some old faithfulls were chokas with Dhus but after 4 way hook ups on two drifts in 55m we moved on to some coraal lumps and found the trout. The www.abrolhostackle.com.au jigs did all the damage on dhus, big trout and even a 6ft grey nurse which hit it on the move and had me guessing all the way up.
Headed for home mid arvo 33 knots all the way and back tot he ramp and in Perth by midnight!
Pretty impressed with my Madfish Fish bag which I keep tucked away on the boat in case of some surprise pelagics - fitted 6 big macks and the XL wahoo and kept them all nicely iced all night. Thumbs up for another WA company www.madfishgear.com

Only landed the small ones
Submitted by JohnF on Sun, 2015-08-16 10:06On a bloody cold, wet and wintery day last week, found a heap of bait and some angry red blobs on what looks to be a wreck of some sort in the 40's.
Lost a heap of jigs before we managed to land a few smaller ones.
Ended the day with a half dozen KG's between 45 and 48 cm. Forgot how good those things are to eat, secret is not to overcook the very delicate fillets. In panko crumbs, I think they may be my favourite.

Friday arvo
Submitted by Madmerv on Fri, 2015-08-14 22:42Got the call Fri lunchtime from a mate who should have been in the goldfields. His gold prospecting partner had heart problems last night and is in the hospital getting monitored. Do i want to go fishing??
Loaded the car and kissed the missus goodbuy. Launched at Mindarie around 3ish and headed out about 100m, well just the other side of 3 mile. Was planned for a bread and butter fish with a few floaters out the back.
We got a good sounder reading in the middle of nowhere and decided to pull up in the 10m mark. As soon as we stopped there was a sizable silver shadow moving below us and in our haste to rig up i tangled my rig up so Darren got the first line in the water. Bastard hooked up straight away and landed a 78cm pinkie.
That was a good start so we repositioned the boat and dropped the anchor. Got the bearley going and had a hot session with a heap of skippy landed and a few blistering runs (not landed) over the next few hours.
Ended up with 2 pinkies and a bucket of skippy. Pretty good for an arvo not planned for.

My best metro fishing day
Submitted by collin g wood on Fri, 2015-08-14 18:54Launched out from point peron on Thursday morn with the intention of heading towards rotto somewhere, however wind and weather dictated terms so ended up anchoring and bellying on the back of the 5fb, between 6 am & 7 am I managed to boat 3 dhu between 44 & 47 cm, lost a thumper to a broken swivel before another small one of 28 cm, lost another thumper boat side spat hooks, took photos of fish caught as well as school ball on the sounder, between 7 am & 8 am caught 5 undersized pinkies before getting a keeper of 68cm, again took a pic of the sounder, I noticed a big difference in the way both schools showed upon the sounder, the dhu showed up as a big ball about 1 or 2 metres from the bottom where the snapper showed coming from the bottom, anyway as soon as the tide changed the bite stopped, I don't normally follow the almanac's but Thursday's was spot on, also I'm f@$&ed if I canwork out how to upload pics to this site, can it be made easier pls?

Quick trip with the missus
Submitted by Bunny on Fri, 2015-08-14 18:09So while my brother and sister in law headed out wide and slayed them (see the big Trout posted, they got more than that) I took Narelle out from Cairns to try and get her a fish. We had about 2 and a half hours fishing due to kid duties so I took a punt at a spot I have and luckily it paid off. I was hoping for a mackerel or two and we ended up with twelve (school macks). We probably lost over 20 as well and Narelle was in her element and getting stuck in which was awesome to see. A few Bludger Trevally and Mack Tuna added to the fun. As you can see the weather was awful. Good fun but a little jealous now after seeing some other photos sent to me .......

Kalbarri today
Submitted by ranmar850 on Thu, 2015-08-13 20:56Went out at gentlemans hours, easterly was fresher than forecast, anchoring was the only option. Didn't go very far north, initially. Busted up on 40lb leader and bait first drop, then nothing. Faffed around slowly working my way north for nothing, bait and jigs, stuff it, head up to Baldface. Immediate action, first a sambo before the anchor rope was straight, then a nice 70 cm trout, then another sambo. Went quiet and wind dropped, pulled the pick and started to prospect, then the southerly came in with a bang, certainly not forecast. Headed straight for home and really bashed the last four miles or so.

Metro KGs
Submitted by Mick C on Wed, 2015-08-12 22:01Headed out of Hillarys about 5pm this afternoon to see if we could find the pinkies. Conditions were as good as you can hope for so out to the back of the 3 Mile on hard ground to burley up and wait for the schools to move through, hopefully.
On the first drop Mark hooked a good fish which fought all of the way to the boat, and was initially called for a big skippy. No, a large metro KG (now that is a desired species). Over the next half an hour a few more came in and the trip was certainly worthwhile.
The pinkies were absent from our spot, except for an undersized 400mm model (hopes were high when this one was landed but unfortunately no more). Undersized dhu, a 1m bronzie and a couple of 6kg+ Port Jacksons made up the rest of our catch.
A tasty bag in a few hours so close to the coastline. I still marvel at what you can catch within 15 minutes of the marina, and whiting that measure around half a metre.

Slow day saved at the vinegar stroke
Submitted by JohnF on Sat, 2015-08-08 11:25Me an Bodie headed out yesterday, plan was a deep drop given 4 out of the 5 forecasts were looking great.......you guessed it, the 1 out of 5 that said it would be shiiite was spot on.
Ended up bashing about on the 40's with a dirty northerly wind getting rained on and generally wishing we were at work.....by lunchtime we ended with a few size dhuies for dinner and a nice sambo on the light PE 1.2 gear for Bodie which took a bloody age to get in....in fact Bodie did most of the damage, I was a generally bystander......
After seeing a gap in the clouds after lunch and the wind dropping right out, we made a dash for the deep drop in very confused seas. Despite 5 knot winds out wide for several hours before the westerly came in, the remnant slop made it almost impossible to sound in the deeps, so all we could do is a couple of blind drops for a few greeneys and a knifejaw. As the sun was getting low and the westerly had come in, we decided to give up and headed home.
With the sun getting close to setting and still a long way from home, we came across this new spot. Always happy when you find new spots like this steaming home at 23 knots.
Although we were all packed up, there were no questions asked, we both got our PE2 jig gear out and thought we would have some fun. Wrong. After hooking up immediately, we were both dominated. I got the PE3 gear out....dominated and bricked again. Out with the PE4 for me, PE5 for Bodie with drags tightened right up, and it was on. Fish were not huge but man they were fat and went hard in shallow water. Friggen hectic 30 minute session where we had multiple double hook-ups which had to be cut off as the sun had set and it was getting dark with a long way to go home. Got a few pics of Bodie in action whilst releasing my fish.
Fun way to end and otherwise slow and sloppy day.

Last day fishing in Coral Bay
Submitted by Cruise Control on Tue, 2015-08-04 19:56Well, we have bagged out and got to the point today that we had to release all bar the largest fish.
The trip has been nothing but sensational, great weather, plenty of fish. Lots to see on the water and a freezer full of fillets for home. the tax man has been around but not to the point where you want to scream. Some NW blowies, about half a dozen or so, so we just moved, plenty of good ground around so if you want to pick the GPS co-rods from the pics, help yourselves, nothing special at these spots other than fish were there on the day.
We have had the best weather that I can recall for some time with afternoon temps hitting 29 degrees, perfect for a swim and a bit of a bikini fest on the beach.
Andy, if you have half the weather that I have had you will enjoy yourself tremendously.
last couple of pics. I might put something together when I get home and put up all the pics for, those that want to see them.

Last trip for the winter
Submitted by Fisheagle on Sun, 2015-08-02 12:13With my surgery for a double knee replacement scheduled for the Tuesday morning, Gail and I decided to take a chance and get out on a rainy Saturday which was to be my last trip for the winter. The recovery time for this type of surgery can be up to three months and I had to make the best of this last trip before the summer.
We launched in the rain from Woodman Point and made our way towards the southern end of Rottnest Island. By the time we reached Seaward Reef on Five Fathom Bank the visibility was less than ten meters due to the heavy rain and Gail was protesting as she could not see land. I assured her that the Raymarine chart plotter does not lie and that other than Seaward Reef itself we did not have any “known” obstacles until we reached our destination. Her obvious question was “what about the other boats” which fitted perfectly into my future justification for a sonar. This rain squall lasted for another 30 minutes – so did the squabble. None-the-less we arrived at our designated destination all intact and dropped the anchor as the clouds parted to allow the sun to beam out its morning greetings to a receptive fisherlady.
On Gail’s first drop she hooked up into the largest Scorpionfish that I have seen to date – caught on a 7/0 hooked, loaded with a block of Herring. Soon after I caught a keeper of a Snapper on a drifting Scalie where no weight was needed due to the lack of a current (see video footage for method). The next fish was a Samson Fish on light gear which gave Gail a good run and tested her ever improving angling skills. I managed to get some underwater footage of the fight on the GoPro.
During the next couple of hours Gail lost three good fish and I managed to land the biggest Cuttlefish that I have ever seen. On our way out we stopped off on a sandy patch in about 16m of water about 2km west of the northern Point of Garden Island and caught a number of Whiting to end off another memorable trip.
Please keep on posting your catches as I will be “living” on Fishwrecked and YouTube during my recovery period. Tight lines and safe angling.

Day 6 fishing in Coral Bay - pics added
Submitted by Cruise Control on Fri, 2015-07-31 18:39Well another day in paradise. Headed out on the rising tide and back to favourite ground in 130m. As soon as we stopped and dropped lines fish were on, with Rosie's and solid Goldband coming up. We encouraged a couple of visitors as we had a 4 meter Tiger circling us for a while and after he nicked off we had a few Dollies turn up, not the ones with skirts but the fish !
We managed to invite a 1 meter plus on board and he is joining us for dinner tonight - yum.
As soon as the tide peaked the bite slowed and we moved back into 90 to chase some Reds. We landed in the Red kindergarten and started bringing up baby reds, all of which were returned but we managed to winkle out a couple of fish around the 3 - 4 kg mark to make up our emporer limit. That with the Goldband and a nice snub nosed cod all helped to fill up the fish box.
In just before Mahi Mahi who unloaded a boatload of Rubies and 8 Bar. Weather looking a but suss tomorrow so a lay day has been declared so the old boy can take a break. I'm fairly knackered, pulling fish up from 130m is bloody hard work especially when you have don it for 6 days in a row !
I'll post some more pics when my boy emails them through to me so they are all on his phone.
cheers

Day 4 fishing in Coral Bay
Submitted by Cruise Control on Wed, 2015-07-29 17:59Well it had to happen, perfect weather, no wind and the fish were biting. Headed out at 8.00am and started looking in 90m, landed a couple of Robbos and a Rankin with a small Red. Weather was too good so up and off to 130m chasing Goldband.
Went to my secret spot which is probably 10,000 other peoples secret spot and down went the lines. An hour later and it was bagged out time. Scored a nice Red, scarlet sea perch and a swag of Goldband and Rosie's.
Return trip sitting on 26 knots all the way and off the ramp with still a lot of boats still out making the best of the light winds and sunny weather.
Most fish were taken on fresh fish and squid. The Robbos definitely preferred squid but the others were all on fresh fish. Only lost a couple of fish to the taxman and they must have been big buggers because they took the whole rig!
Another nice day tomorrow so we will try and do it all again. Couple of pics below.

day 3 fishing in Coral Bay
Submitted by Cruise Control on Tue, 2015-07-28 18:26day 3 was a bit of a loss, lots of Km's for very little return. Only put a few fish in the box with a solid baldie the best of a bad bunch. The northerly was pumping again, turning NW. and the fish went down, lots on the sounder but no takers. Better forecast tomorrow with the wind shifting so hopefully will fish better and I'll have something to say tomorrow.
