Priceless Moments
Submitted by JohnF on Sat, 2013-03-23 20:49took the boys out for their first run on the Whaler today. Sloppy southerlies were no match for the new tug, it performed flawlessly.
My youngest got the first fish on the boat, and betweenmany whiting, a few skippy decided to give the boys a bit of curry.
Priceless moments.

Tuesday Fish
Submitted by Greg Jones on Wed, 2013-03-20 08:16So the boss says I have too much annual leave apparently, and that I have to have some days off here and there.....OK then, so I grabbed my brother (retired the lucky bugger) and we scooted out yesterday morning into the mist. Scored these couple - biggest BA I've caught at 50 cm, and our second size Dhuie in as many trips at 63cm. We also had some fun with some small Samsons and YTK at 50 - 60 cm. Great day and fish for dinner!

Sunday Session
Submitted by Adrian Z on Tue, 2013-03-19 12:45Hi guys,
I'm a new member and new to WA and have thus far been utterly impressed by the Standard of fishing in the Perth Metro area having come from Melbourne.
Took the boat out on Sunday for a troll behind the inshore reefs trolling a couple of Rapala XRAP Mag 10's and managed to snag my first ever Spaniard.
Fish took off on a blistering first run and after a fifteen minute fight had him on board.
Also saw heaps of fish slashing the surface and a few schools of small Tuna hitting bait on the surface.
Hope to get out soon and get onto another one.

Bait's rubbish
Submitted by Codhead on Fri, 2013-03-15 17:13 It is really. Everything stinks and you catch loads of undesirables. I had the day off but unfortunately none of the few folk who can put up with me were able to come out so I set off solo (which explains the crap photos) from Two Rocks at 7ish heading for a couple of close in spots that have produced in the past. The sea was calm and sounder looking good but nothing doing on the squid so I tried a spot of jigging. It says everything about my technique that I only hooked up with the rod in a rod holder while answering the call of nature. Result 52cm Baldy.
A quick troll along the back of the reef on the way in looked like a good idea. Following a truly impressive strike which I picked as a mackerel in came a 70cm pinkie. Go figure!

One hooked up and gave me hell for about 10 mins.
Had to start the motor and back up on it.
Got close to the boat, saw some seriously long flash of silver.
Fish wasnt happy and powered off straightening the hooks.
Then i wasnt happy.

on my way back up spoke to a fisho on his way down and he said that it was the exact same Saturday evening,he was going to use unweighted muile last night to see if that made a difference, just wondering was anybody else there over the weekend and did they get any results, conditions were clean,no weed and no wind and just a light breeze!

Weekend Trolling
Submitted by DTrain on Mon, 2013-03-11 10:00I decided to make the best of the good weather over the weekend to do some trolling and hopefully find some of the metro macks people have been talking about.
We headed out Saturday evening from Mindarie and trolled around for 3 hours with only 1 hookup. The fish wasn't fighting and didn't feel that big so I just wound it straight up to the boat. Looked over the side of the boat to see what it was and saw a 20+ kg Yellow Fin Tuna staring back at me. Unfortunately as soon as it saw the net coming for it's head it went beserk and took off again bending my crosslock snap in the process and stealing my favourite lure. Spewing! We kept trolling right until it was dark without any luck, then headed back to the boat ramp.
We had some drinks on Saturday night so our 5am Sunday start got pushed back a bit. We eventually hit the water at about 7am and trolled around for an hour before one of the lures went off. We were a bit more on the ball and this time the fish had no chance of escape.
I'm not 100% sure but we think it's a Big Eye Tuna.

We kept on trolling for another hour or so and eventually found some birds working the surface. There was tuna jumping out of the water all over the place, but we still had a hard time temping any of them. Eventually after another hour of chasing the birds and tuna schools around we got a double hookup. We put one of the rods into the rod holder in order to get the first fish into the boat and by the time we got back to the rod the second fish was gone.
The second Big Eye Tuna:

We kept on trolling through the tuna schools for about another hour before getting the next double hookup. This time neither of us were willing to put down our rods to help the other out so we ended up using the net in one hand and the rod in the other to get the fish in.
They turned out to be a Striped Tuna and a mackie:

At this stage my hangover had combined forces with sea sickness and I was starting to turn green, we were also running low on petrol and running out of space in the esky so we turned around and headed back to the ramp.
The weather was fantastic, the water was flat as a pancake and the tuna were everywhere we looked. We finally found a metro mack. A great day out trolling.
I made a quick video showing the birds circling and the tuna jumping out the water. You probably want to turn the sound down though unless you like 2 strokes:

Girls day out
Submitted by Clown Fish on Sun, 2013-03-10 18:50Took Mrs clownfish and her mate out today. Thought I would be flat out all day rigging, baiting, cleaning, driving, dehooking etc but the girls had their shit together. between them they managed 4 dhu's, 1 baldy, 2 BB, 1 sweep, 1 foxfish, 15 redthroat and a sarge that got absolutely munted by something BIG on the way up. Well done to the fairer sex.
BTW I think red throat has become the next NW blowie. Heaps of them around. Some of my spots are riddled with them.

Canning River
Submitted by tadpole on Sun, 2013-03-10 11:04Thought I'd start a topic for Canning River reports as thats where I do the bulk of my fishing
Had a fish on the grassy bank below the Castledare railway yesterday but only got about 5 undersize bream on river prawns from right in the middle of the river. Didn't get any touches at all fishing around the snags which I thought was odd. Same thing happened last week fishing about 200m downstream. About to take the kids down to Kent St weir now to feed the ducks and flick a few lures around and see what happens!

The Busso Jetty report 8-3-13
Submitted by TheJettyRat on Fri, 2013-03-08 12:29There is not much to report this time unfortunatly with fishing for anything besides herring becoming very quiet over the past two weeks. Tailor numbers have dropped to almost shut down levels over the past week, if you are targeting them your best bet at the moment is to go out in the morning towards the end of the jetty. The odd bonito can still be landed in the late arvo/eavening but they have been mostly running first thing in the morning. Squid numbers are still slowly picking up with some large specimens being landed over the past week. If you are targeting squid the first half of the night is the way to go. The good news is that if you after a feed of herring they are around in their thousands after dark and they are a good size too with some being around 30cm.
That is all for now, I will report back when it picks up again so keep an eye on this report for updates. Tight lines everyone and good luck if you are hitting the jetty.

took my youngest brother fishing tonight at floreat beach for tailor. He has never been fishing so obviously never caught a fish in his life.
After baiting him up, casting out for him he pulled in a 40 plus cm tailor- should have seen the smile on his face!!!
Pretty sure he is hooked now- very happy to see him enjoy fishing as much as do

Swan River last Monday
Submitted by Joodles on Thu, 2013-03-07 16:23I used the Monday holiday to get away for a few hours by myself and wade around in the river. Started at Chidley at 6am heading downstream. Had a great time, landed 3 flatties, 2 bream and a flounder all on Zman grubz in violet sparkle. Also got stung by a jelly fish around my ankle and chased by a cranky blue crab. All good fun!
sorry no pics, I haven't got the solo shots sorted yet?

Two rocks saturday/sunday Rotto Tuesday
Submitted by terboz123 on Thu, 2013-03-07 07:42quick report

Hit up rotto tuesday for a quick mackie run, had a friend out who had never been on a boat before, got to my area. bait everywhere lures out, 20 minutes later bang we are on, right on cue with the tides etc etc.....handed the rot to a mate, the fished started running at us he didnt know what to do , i was yelling real real real (was pulling in the teasers) and managed to loose the fish and the best of it all, had to turn to go home due to him being seas sick!
Oh well.....The two rocks mack was my first since january (where we had a triple hook up), and there here in numbers south of two rocks.that confirmed thanks to my diver friends.... just gotta know where.

steep point holiday (picture heavy)
Submitted by bitten on Wed, 2013-03-06 14:41headed up to steep point for the recent long weekend and i have to say what an awesome place i have been wanting to go there for a long time now and even though the fishing wasnt red hot we still had a ball.
day 1:
4 of us were heading up in 2 cars, we spent the morinng packing up the old 60 series ready for the ong journey only to realise by the time we were packed that we had way to much weight and nearly no suspension left. thinking it probably wasnt wise to head up there severely overloaded, we had to convince my mates missus to let us take his gu patroll thankfully she agreed and the task of completely unpacking and repacking the car was set about. midday was the agreed time to meet the other mob at 440 roadhouse to drive up in convoy, as it turns out we needed not worry about hurrying as the other lot ginned around like old women and didnt leave untill 4 pm, being as keen as we were to get there the call was made to meet at the useless loop turn off. so off we went at about 3pm and arrived at the corner around dusk, expecting them to be an hour or so behind us it was time to crack a tinny, 4 hours and a carton of beer later the boys turned up, needless to say we were a bit pissed off they stopped at billabong for a few prics.
the rest of the trip went prety well in convoy up the dirt road and through the dunes the hiulx needed a little nissan power to get over a couple of the hills on the way we arrived at the start of the beach at about 2 30 in the morning and the call was made to roll out the swags and spend the night there. prety good camping spot i have to say plenty of life little sharks, stingrays, turtles, mullet everywhere. we were all itching to get to the point the next morning.
day 2:
woke up to a few sore heads and a perfect day 5 - 6 knots of wind and just warm enough, washed down a couple of panadol with an ice cold dare. packed up and headed into the rangers by 8 am, a quick stop there, and off we chekced out a few spots on the way in found a shallow spot around a rock where we could see big baldies and trevally swimming around, chucked that one in the memory bank for later on, off to the point. we arrived to reports of green water and slow fishing maybe 1 - 2 fish a day didnt sound good but thought we would have to make our own luck anyway. broke out the spinning rods as soon as we arrived and on with a gold twisty to see if i could get one of the little tuna swimming around, i managed to hook into one that was estimated 10kg he took off around the point as i had the drag a little light on and couldnt turn him ping there goes the first lure of the day. couldnt manage to get another hit for the rest of the day.
Day 3:
got up early started spinning before even having a coffee turned out to be another quite slow day no mackies in the morning, threw on a curried chicked 7 inch gulp and played around a bit managed to land a small yellow tail king and a spotty mackeral, not quite the fishing we were anticipating on the way up, but i was still in the lead from the other 3 blokes. fished during the day on a couple of difficult to get to ledges for baldies and snapper, caught plenty of leopard cod, we were starting to wonder where the fish were. late in the afternoon spinning with a pink mack bait i managed to raise the first makies of the trip when a school of small fish cam past only around 5 - 8 kg i got 6 hits in 2 casts and no hookups i was not a happy camper at that point. late in the afternoon i was throwing a goldtwisty around just as the sun was sinking below the horizen and bang i was on, the fight was short lived but i managed to land the first mack of the trip around 5 kg only a baby but i was still happy, persistance pays off.
Day 4:
day 4 was probably our best days fishing started spinning in the morning between us we managed to land 3 macks and a cobia biggest was only 8 kg but still plenty of fun. headed around to the high side to try for some baldies and macks we spent half an hour waiting for the toher 2 blokes who were again moving like my nanna decided to meet them there so we got a 15 minute head start on them, arrived at the spot first cas bang! nice snapper winched him up to the rocks we were prety stoked with that second cast another bloody small cod threw him back and rebaited bang on again another nice snap snap hit the rocks both around 3 kg.
having bagged out on the pink fish i kicked back and had a beer to watch the other blokes fish shoulda seen there faces when they arrived to see 2 nice snapper laying on the rocks haha. not long after rory managed to hook the biggest snapper for the trip around 4 kg good fish they arnt easy to dead lift out of the water finaly the other blokes got there lines in and the young feller managed to land a great baldie and a cracker of a dart a few hairy moments were spent gaffing the baldie because he only had lightish braid on. the fish slopwed down a bit so we headed off fr a swim and fish at the beach, one of the kmost beautifull beaches i have ever seen had a quick swim and broke out the prawns 28 big whiting a nice flattie a couple of gardies and plenty of dart made it a prety fun afternoon. rory and i decided to go off and do the tourist thing while the other boys went back to the snapper spot to try again, they managed another 5 snapper and a red throat in the evening.
day 5:
time to go :( not happy, headed up to the snapper spot again managed another snapper and a baldie each in the morning to top the trip off, had to go back to pack up. just as we were about to leave the boys in the camp start yelling and running we look over to see a rod going off shortly after a nice fish of around 17 kg est hit the rocks spewin we had all the gear packed up, off we went one last swim at the beach in shelter bay on the way out and we were off tired sunburnt sore but prety happy we didnt fill the freezers we only kept 3 or 4 fish each but had a ball just being in that part 0f australia.
awesome!!!

1st Freo Mackie
Submitted by Uluabuster on Tue, 2013-03-05 19:13Spun up this mackie on Sunday morning @ North Mole. Saw heaps of folks plugging away on the rocks and many boats around.
Skipper Catchalittle mentioned there are some bonitos around and needed a few for bait. So I took out reached for my mint Lucky Craft Blueshot 30. At 33g, this lure casts like a bullet and built solid throughout.
This lure comes originally with only a rear treble. Took that off and put on 2 trebles of the same size one on the belly and the other at the tail.
I cast and retrieved the lure a few times to familiarize myself with the action. At the 3rd cast I let the lure sank and twitched to back to the boat.
Twitch - Twitch - Pause. Twitch - BANG!
Thought it was a bonito initially cos it didn't put up the searing run typical of mackeral.
Anyway, when I saw what it was I nearly shit in my pants! Reason being I was using only 10lb Power Pro 8 Slick & 20lb Exceed FC leader with no wire!
Target was meant to be bonito but didn't expect a Spaniard to crash the party!
Luckily skipper was calm and managed to gaff the fish to my relief!
Needless to say I was stoked! First Spaniard off the mouth of Swan River!
Subsequent to that I caught a squid on Clone Stickbait and that was all for North Mole.
Rod used: Bayside Shooter 10-25lb
Reel : TD Fuego 3000

On a sad note, I probably left my black colour JM jigbait with a handful of jigs in them at the boat ramp @ Leeuwin Barracks. If any kind soul found it, please return it to me cos the bag was given by a mate from Taiwan many years ago. Have had it for 10 years now. It looks quite worn out and I am pretty sure it doesn't fetch much price on the 2nd hand market. It's sentimental value far exceeds its dollar value to me. It comes with many jig pockets with hard plastic bottom at bottom of the pocket so that sharp pointy jigs wouldn't pierce a hole in it.
