Tuesday metro jigging
Submitted by southcity104 on Wed, 2009-10-28 13:45With a list of fish to target we headed out from cockburn with what was looking like a superb day. And a good day it turned out to be. First on the list were tailor in wash around the islands. Metal slices were working and a bomber XT shallow diver produced the biggest fish.
Rumours are true. The larger sambos are in shallows. Had a 20kg/ plus fish cruise under the boat while we were targeting tailor.
We werent hanging around though and headed out for the 100meter barges. On arival we found very little activity on the sounder, Just a little flare right on the edges. On our second barge i christened the new fireblood 2500/ Hearty rise 1-3 on a solid skippy and then the sambos began to fire up. Landed around 6 or 7 fish ranging in size. All juveniles 2 to 6 kilos. On two occasions we had double hook ups. The bigger fish eluded us or just werent there.
We decided to pick up a feed of squid and whiting before heading in.
Gotta love Perth.
Anyways that was yesterday on the brine.

Cape Leveque - 2 day adventure
Submitted by WODF on Tue, 2009-10-27 16:01Following on from here - http://fishwrecked.com/forum/broome-story-so-far
Just got back from two days up at Kooljamin Resort at Cape Leveque, 2 hours north of Broome. Simply awesome! Whales could be seen breaching from the beaches and our safari tent the entire time. One afternoon and morning had me exploring the shallows of Eastern Beach encountering small trevally, queenies, cod and small reef sharks - one of which almost beached itself trying to eat my popper lol. Monday arvo we visited One Arm Point community with the Sunday Island group just offshore which was quite interesting - never seen anything like it. After only two days here and a week or so in Broome I'm well and truly hooked on the Kimberley!
There's a few...
Spotters vision
Eastern Beach
Leveque Island
Boat Ramp
A few of these around
Bozo cobe
Jologo Beach
Western Beach
I'll be back...

Things to do when you can't peg dhufish
Submitted by till on Tue, 2009-10-27 15:41We went and did some recon off Hillarys; 11.8m, 45min, 17°C, 5m vis and very surgy.
Oddly the crays hadn't just been queueing in all my fave spots to bag them while the season was out. We did find a few to come back to when the season opens though.

Lady Joyce tiger and tailor
Submitted by carnarvonite on Sun, 2009-10-25 16:40Weather report looked a bit suspect from what it was the night before so instead of heading north to the Beejaling Shoals we went south to the Lady Joyce wreck.
First drop and things looked real good with Nev's missus Anne on with a double header of a good snapper and an undersize one to start the day.For the next hour or so things were quiet with only under size pinks coming in every drop.
I got into a good pink followed by 2 more in successive drops then it was Nev's turn and a second one coming in for Anne.
Spotted what I thought was a mackie cruising around, took the sinker off, pulled about 15 metres of line out and tossed the baits out and bang off it went .Not a mackie but a double header of a little pinkie and a reasonable tailor.Next cast came up with another tailor around 2kg.
Things went quiet again with a big tiger paying us a visit.Missed the better shots when he was right next to the boat but managed some on its second lap, estimate it at 11-12 foot, ttttoooo big to swim with or toss a bait at.
Ended up keeping 12 tailor and 10 pinkies, releasing what seemed like hundreds of undersize pinkies and around a dozen tailor, the biggest being about 3-3 1/2 kg.It always happens when you have your bag limit on ice and the bigger fish start biting,oh well, one can't complain.
Spoke to a mate who went north to the "shoals" when we got back,he had a poor trip. One just size pinkie and a small rankin were the only keepers.Said they got catfish where ever they moved

Albany trip - Mid Oct
Submitted by Goodz on Sat, 2009-10-24 21:10Headed down to Albany again last week for a family holiday with a few days of fishing slotted in. Seabreeze had me sucked into thinking the weather was going to be great during mid week and we booked tues and weds in for boating days.
Tuesday morning we headed out early to go explore some new ground out deep but things didn't quite go to plan with stronger winds and bigger than expected swell, the skipper (dad) got sea sick on the way out and after having motor troubles 10km out we decided to head back in closer to find an area with a bit more acceptable conditions. We only got a few drifts in on a shallower reef before the skipper had thrown up enough to call it home time. 1 Harliquin, 2 Break sea, a Leathery and a Sweep that had me calling "Queen snapper for sure" as I'd foul hooked it in the side and it gave quite the tussle!
My bro with a nice Harliquin
The small mixed bag for Tuesdays efforts.
Wednesday was looking slightly better wind wise, though the swell was still to be up so we decided just to stay in close and fish in 30-40m for the morning. As conditions were quite calm and we had a slow drift I thought I'd try the Soft Plastic approach and try and score my first fish using them in deeper water. On previous attempts I'd had the tails bitten off and given up without success. Whilst the 3 others onboard already had their baits down I quietly rigged up and lobbed out an SP without high expectations of catching anything.... it was only a minute or 2 of jigging around before my SP suddenly came to life and gave me a little run for my money. A nice little Harliquin became my first ever fish on an sp fishing offshore and totally filled me with confidence in the artificial approach!
Another drift or 2 didn't produce another else so we moved on to another spot and I thought I'd give the old faithfull bait ago again. 3 Queen Snapper and a Break Sea Cod were landed but things were pretty quiet so it was time to give the knife jig a go this time. 30 seconds of jigging and I was on! A just size Queen Snapper on the jig, another first!
By this time the wind was up and conditions were getting sloppy so we called it a day. The fishing wasn't great but it was exciting to get a couple firsts using the sp and jig.
Friday morning the weather was pretty average, drizzle and windy but we decided to go for a drive out to Cheynes beach / Bluff creek for a looksy and to have fish anywhere that looked good for some salmon if they were about. Had a fun day driving along the beach trying many good looking holes and gutters but only managed a bunch of herring, tho the old man did get snapped off by something of size at one spot.
Cruisin the beach looking for deep holes and gutters.
So overall it was another enjoyable trip to Albany with only average fishing. Hopefully next time the weather can be a little calmer and we can get out in the boat to some better ground.... can't wait!

Metro fishing, Still lov'n it!
Submitted by southcity104 on Wed, 2009-10-21 20:35Cockburn Sound still has some good to offer with the demersal ban shutting down snapper. Working the edges of the channel produced some xl sand whiting and over the broken gound we picked up a couple of Kgs. Unlike earlier in the week we wernt able to get a feed of squid. We also rigged live baits trolled the rotto chicken run for about 20 minutes but no strikes.
Was supprised to hear the boys at blue water tackle reckon the sambos are thick on five fathom?
Also had sea rescue charge over to us asking about a boat in distress. I feel the best solution for the fella that made the dummy call would simply be to foot the fuel bill for the boats, planes, helicopters involved in the huge opperation he caused.
Anyways, with bans inplace im still loving my fishing.

Broome - the story so far
Submitted by WODF on Wed, 2009-10-21 13:50Well, not much to report lately. I've so far fished the waters around Reddell Beach, Entrance Pt. and the Broome Jetty on the weekend and earlier this week - a lot of hours put in for very little result. I've landed 2 fish and lost 4 - caught a pesky little longtom(lol), a broad-barred mackie and lost 2 big goldens, a salmon and a unknown. Anyway, I've been lucky enough to experience Broome's big tides - up to 9.8m since I've been here and also, a few other attractions. Beautiful place!
I'll let the pics tell the rest of this part of the story...
I'll keep you's posted.

Submitted by fishmark on Tue, 2009-10-20 21:40Hi everyone my first report so bear with me , a mate and I took me boat down to busselton for the weekend was planned months ago so the annoucement of the ban took the edge of the trip but canceling was not an option , weather was too good with a breeze early then dead calm and crystal clear water all weekend , we got our allowance of crabs fairly easy , mainly fat females with a couple off biggies the squid where eratic with one here one there but again some nice big ones , plenty of hering around the jetty and some gharfish and while trying out my new lights saturday nite a huge shark fin was cruising around the jetty hate too think what size it was , we chased kgs but only got some sandies and wrasse also hooked my first mako which jumped a couple of metres out of the water when it realised that mulie had a hook in it and was good fun on my little trinnidad , it managed to chew through the line when I pulled it up to the boat which was a relief after seeing how well they jump all in all a great weekend lookin forward to the next trip out .

jiggin last weekend
Submitted by spoon on Mon, 2009-10-19 21:37took the boys out from work jiggin the other day. Had a pretty good day most of the boys hadnt been fishing before so was a bit of an eye opener to them. You could catch as many skippy as you want biggest went about 6.5 kilo, got about 5 sambos only small, biggest went about 8 kilo and I got a mulloway. Noticed the sambo's were very high in the water column, never noticed this before maybe about 60 metres of the bottom. Got smashed once by an unstoppable. Fished the barges in 110m will put up a pic of the skippy soon

Mandurah Mulloway?
Submitted by godders on Mon, 2009-10-19 16:31Hey all
Fished quite hard all weekend for Mulloway around Mandurah with no such luck.
I had one good run at white hills on Friday afternoon but it dropped the bait.
Apart from that was really quiet with apart from two rays which took up a bit of time.
Did anyone fish Mandurah at all over the weekend and how did you go?

Lancelin jetty report 18. Oct.
Submitted by Likc on Mon, 2009-10-19 11:36After being frustrated for few months now not catching anything edible around metro area, me and my mates decided to head up to Lancelin for some good fish. It was my first fishing trip up there. (I am kind of new to fishing and to this forum. Thanks to all members sharing their knowledge here.) On the way we stoped at Ledge Point. Conditions were not bad, but a lot of weed around, so after half an hour we packed up. Arrived at Lancelin jetty around 3pm. Line in the water and almost instant hook up and we landed firs fish. Trumpeter, so still nothing for feed. They were like Blowies, taking anything. Quite annoying really. The ground around the jetty is quite weedy, so we were getting snagged every now and then and eventually ran out of sinkers. As a last attempt I tried one trumpeter on the gang and after around 15 minutes soaking him in the water, the reel spined quickly for about a second. Something busted me off as I had the gang just on a mono line not on a wire trace. It musted been hell of a fish to take whole trumpeter.
Nobody seemed to catch anything decent few herrings now and then. Fisheries guys came to say hello as well. Not a bad looking officer. :)
So we came home empty handed, lost some gear, but at least little bit of action on the rod after long time.

Friday's Koks island report
Submitted by carnarvonite on Sat, 2009-10-17 16:42Took a run over to the islands on Friday in my old mate Nev's new second hand 26ft shaft drive boat.Weather was looking suspect when we got away with SW winds around 10-15knots but these soon dropped off to next to nothing.
Stopped at the "muck hole"for a fish on the way and the only fish biting were undersized norwest snapper so it was on towards Koks.
Once there and anchored it was over the side for me to cut a bit of rope off the prop shaft.A waiting game with the odd fish showing on the sounder and nothing biting. After about half an hour up came the first pinky to Nev,one to go with his first spangly at the muck hole, not a big fish but still a keeper.Next thing and I was hooked into the first of 5 sharks to be hooked. It took about 20 minutes to get a look at and that was all it and bang he was gone.Next it was Nev's turn, hooking one about 5-6 foot right on the tip of his tail,at least we got a pic or two of his one before it too said goodbye.
Over all a quiet trip, weather was spot on but the fish didn't play the game.Total of 5 pinkies for 4 anglers,5 sharks hooked,2 sighted and all unintentionally released plus a heap of released undersized spanglies at the muck hole. Now that we have worked the sounder operation plus the gps things may improve--we hope!!!As far as the boat goes, its a nice change to cruise over in relative comfort at 10-11 knots instead of flying over at 20+ and getting the s$%^ shaken out of you.

Barra...
Submitted by Marky on Sat, 2009-10-17 15:42Well finally made it up to Camballin a few hours north of Broome last week... And what an awesome time we had... Found some nice camping grounds, and some nice fishing grounds.... Gotta kick myself thou for only having 15lb braid on my reels because i got smashed.... The missus got smashed, My missus's cousin got smashed by some BIG BARRA...... Missus's cousin up from Perth for a holiday landed his first barra at 86cm as pictured, other than that we got punished badly, losing up to 15 big barra all easily over 80cm. Two mates up from Karratha had some more succes as they were running 30lb and got about 15 between the two of them... Still even 30lb wasnt enough to stop some of the monsters emerging from under rocks and trees... Quite easily 1m plus..... Great fun nonetheless and we all had a ball....We only kept one barra at 65cm for a feed one night, All other fish were released... Bit of a drama the first day stopping in at Willaire bridge and getting the trailer all banged up on some trees and then having to push it out by hand in 38 degree weather... That deserved a well earned beer... good thing we had plenty....:) :) Pics are of the great camping spot at camballin, Chris's 86cm 1st Barra, and pushing boat out... haha.
1st thing i did when i got home was buy some 30lb braid and put it on my reels ready for the next trip... which will be when i get off this oil rig on the 29th Oct... Woooooooo.... The missus is busy so will be looking for a fishing mate if any one interested....

ASI Groin today
Submitted by sixinchrhino on Sat, 2009-10-17 13:27Got down there and set up by 5:45 am, was a beautiful morning, nice and warm, the easterly was up a bit but it wasnt blowing a gale or anything like that. Three and a half hours later and not one bite. I was running mulies(under float with 1.5m leader, on the bottom, and un weighted during different points during the morning, and also had the maggots and burley cage cranked up for the herring and gars on a different rod). Not a bit for te whole morning. Fella who was leaving when I was packing up stopped off and he caught nothing but said there hadnt been anything there for the last 3 weekends he had been there.
I tell ya what though... there's a bloody big hornet/wasp nest somewhere near where I fish from coz they were everywhere flying up and down the rock wall around me. They didnt fuss over me being there and I wasnt too worried about them either.. but god damn, some of them were big. I'll have to take a photo next time, they were bright orange on the legs, head, tip of the tail and wings looked orange/brown, the rest of the body was black... any idea what species they are?

Last day before the ban
Submitted by Anytime Brad on Fri, 2009-10-16 22:31I just had to make the effort to get out on the last day before the ban. Still new to the offshore game so I don’t have any “killer spots”. Launched at Cockburn at 0630, not many others out, wind about 10 knots. Headed due west of Garden Island out to the 40m mark, found a bit of ground, not showing much on the sounder but gave it a go anyway. Nothing on the first couple of drifts then got a nice pinky, and a couple of undersize ones which released fine. Tried a while longer without any luck so had a bit more of a scout around and came up with nice sized harlequin, they must be one of the most colourful fish around not to mention very tasty and a black ass and a undersize duie which I hope released ok with the weight. It was 10am by then and these were the last decent fish landed. Spent a little longer scouting around before heading in. we were going to try for some squid on the way in but as we had a pinky onboard decided to play it safe and head strait in. I guess it may be like shark bay where you can catch and bring pinkies in from outside the gulf but you can’t stop and drop a line on the way back.
Overall a nice day out, bit windy but the seas weren’t too bad. Will have to take a camera next time so I can post some pictures next time. Anyway roll on November 16th and I will be underwater chasing a feed of crays.

KOAC - Local monthly comp 19th September 2009
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Mon, 2009-10-12 13:01KALBARRI OFFSHORE ANGLING CLUB
Local monthly comp 19th September 2009 Competition Report Jakes Bistro was our sponsor this month, Thanks to Brian North, who is back managing the restaurant with much improved food and service. A big turn out for the river anglers again this month but down on numbers in the boat and landbased sections, mainly due to the big swells and less than perfect weather. A near record number of bream were caught and released this month equalling last years record 20 releases. Gary Ivey had 4 of them all live gaining him double points for live fish. Brett Bain had a mixture of bream, tarwhine, and whiting, Di Stewart had 3 bream, and Tony Smith weighed 3 bream the first time he has weighed for a couple of years at least! Cheryl Eley however had 4 live bream and a whiting gaining her just one point ahead of Gary Ivey to win the river section. Gary Ivey however has the biggest bream for the year so far at .852kgs Of the 3 juniors to weigh-in, Beau Ivey's 3 bream won it for him over brothers Luke and James Dooley who had whiting among their bag. James & Luke Dooley with their fish The landbased section had two new members competing, Welcome aboard Brian Mosley and Julius Soloman. Brian had a .6kg tailor and a snook, while Julius won the section with his 3.3kg pink snapper Just 2 boats in the under 7.5m section this month, Ron Neumann in his new boat “Effishency” with junior Keanan Blundstone aboard headed north striking a productive spot. The dhuies were biting with Ron hooking up numerous times and recommending Keanan drop his line in the water quickly! But unfortunately Keanan was lying on the deck very sea sick. When Keanan felt a bit better he managed a small pink snapper to secure the junior prize. Ron’s two dhuies won him the under 7.5m senior section. This may well be the last pic you see of someone holding two dhuies that they caught themselves in one day! Keanan holds his snapper. Craig Gibson and Russell Page were also out in “Jo Jo” but failed to bring a fish home. Laurie Malton, Jason Agrela and daughter Brittany fished out of Laurie’s 7.8m boat south of town, also having trouble landing fish, but Jason’s samson fish won it for him. Brittany hooked up at the same time as Jason, probably on another samson fish, but unfortunately busting off round the prop. Laurie’s small snapper added points to the boat. Jason's Samson fish Craig and Jason release the 20 bream back into the Murchison River at the end of the comp. Ron Neumann took home the Meritorious voucher of $50.00 for his dhuies, Mystery Fish went to Gary Ivey for his bream, Bill Tolson won the $50.00 worth of scratchies in the raffle, and the restaurant draw was won by Tracy Ivey. Craig Gibson was awarded the “Mug of the Day” jumping back into his boat to secure it, got his leg caught on a hook and had to have the hook removed up at the medical centre. LAURIE MALTON

Queenfish-ing (Part 2 included)
Submitted by WODF on Mon, 2009-10-12 11:339/10/09
JK and I hit up the river mouth Friday morn to target the local queenie pop on surface lures due to a window of half decent weather and a day off work. JK managed to get one trolling a little roosta popper on the way back from a drift but apart from that it was only a few half hearted swipes and strikes. We also came across a very aggressive school of tailor which was fun except for losing multiple lures in quick succession lol. They were mad! A vid is on its way.
These guys were looking a bit stuck lol...

North Mole
Submitted by hs1ehlung on Sun, 2009-10-11 18:17Decided to do some fishing with my dad since he doesn’t usually have time to come fishing with me anymore.
Ending going to the north mole even with the wind but one side was calm enough to get some bait in the water.
Within the first 1 hour, we had our first fish (whiting) and for the next few hours, we had bites on every cast.
Some other fish we caught were some decent size Skippy and a flathead.

Submitted by poddyfish on Sun, 2009-10-11 07:55hey guys
just a quickie after heading out early yesterday with spooled and the missus off gero... condtions average but quite fishable we left the ramp at 6ish made it to the end of the channel and had flagpole call over the radio that he had sheared his steering poor bastard.... slow trip back in for him we pushed on about 12mile out on the way spying a sleeping whale that upon futher inspection was actually dead... hoped for some shark action as it had some very big bites out of it but not to be we continued on... some very good showings of fish at a couple of spots only bought one really weighty hookup that spat the hooks almost straight away... change of location again had the missus drop down hookup and quick release something and then pack it in and continue burlying up for spooled and i as she had all morning (poor thing)... decided to head back in with a big fat 0 on the board and spyed the dead whale again so checked it once more.... straight away some small bronzies where spyed maybe 4-5ftrs floating around... and then we seen it cruising in straight off the transom heading at the whale... what a site! big white pointer unreal! a first for myself and spooled and it had the missus feeling abit better or was it she just didnt wanna stick her head back over the side? spent the next 1.5hrs circling and trying to get some snaps of the big rig but condtions just didnt help... very fast drift and wind chop.... did manage some good video that ill try post to adz to set up on here of it coming right up brushin the rear corner with its head just outta water and i was spewing as i reacted too slow and missed my chance to touch its back! also had a good tiger come up nudging the prop before taking off... something we will not forget in a long time and a truely beautiful animal! so graceful yet powerful and not a fish id like to see while spearing....
