Albany trip - Beginning of Oct 09
Submitted by Goodz on Thu, 2009-10-08 22:06It was time for a trip down to Albany. A friend from Sydney was over visiting and I'd promised him a tour of the south west with the gaurantee of his first ever Salmon.
We headed down Tuesday arvo after wasting our money spending a few hours in the pouring rain at the Royal Show. Wednesday was spent stocking up on fishing gear, new sleeping bags, shoes and rain jackets before a drive around Torndirrup area checking out the Gap, Blow holes, Salmon holes etc.. Cable beach was looking nice so we flicked a few lures around for 10 minutes but only a few herring were on the prowl.
The plan for thursday was to head over towards Walpole and fish one of the beaches for Salmon. After picking up a mate from Denmark we made the call to check out Blue Holes beach, hoping the beach wasn't too washed out to drive along and find a nice hole or gutter. I was keen to test out the new Pajero I'd recantly bought and before I knew it we had it swimming through some deep puddles (over the tyres) before making it down to the beach. Conditions weren't the best with a large swell and dirty water but the beach has some great looking gutters all the way along at the moment. We could only drive a few hundred meters down the beach (with the tyres at 8lb) before it was too washed away so we parked up high away from the waves and grabbed a rod each. The plan was to walk further along the beach throwing metal lures along the way into all the holes and gutters in search of some salmon. I made the call again that I gauranteed my mate Steve his first salmon before we left the car. It was 5 minutes before the first hook up, Adrian was walking ahead and was into a nice salmon in a great looking gutter. I ran towards the action and pinged a cast into the gutter hoping there was more, wind, wind, wind... nothing.... until my lure was right in the shorebreak and it stopped dead and launched into the air with a salmon attached. Hoots and Hollahs all round as we quickly landed our fish. Steve frantically casted around the same area but couldn't find any takers. "How do you guys do it?!"
A few minutes later and Adrian was on again but dropped it. It was another 1km of walking and casting before we found anymore Salmon. This time I was first into the action after watching several salmon fighting over the lure on the surface I was hooked up. "Cast straight out there Steve!" A good cast and seconds later he was hooked up on his first ever salmon! I quickly landed my fish and grabbed the camera.
He fought it well and had the fish in the shorebreak in quick time but it just wasn't meant to be and the salmon spat the lure back up the beach leaving Steve feeling like he'd just missed his chance. But the next cast he was on again, this time it was only a small one and didn't really put up a fight on the 20lb beach gear. His first salmon none the less! He was stoked.
Not being that content with such a small salmon Steve was straight back into on his next cast with a bigger one.
The salmon weren't huge but put up a great fight as always and kept us buzzing for that next hook up. I landed 1 more at the same spot before we headed on further up the beach. We should have just stopped there as we walked another 1.5km up the beach for only 1 more salmon. The 3km walk back picking up salmon we'd buried along the way wasn't half as exciting as the first walk, espeically once I had 3 salmon in the backpack and 2 in the hands and the sand was soft!
Overall it was a great session and worth the effort to find the fish!
The next day, Friday, we'd planned to fish the rocks for a kingie or sambo as the report was there are a few around and the winds were looking good. We were up early and on the hike to a favourite spot of Adrians with high hopes of a great rock session. An hour of hiking over hills and along the rocks....
and we arrived at our platform only to find the swell wasn't being as cooperative as we'd hoped. The spot looked fishable but the chances of landing anything hooked were slim to none. A few minutes of assessing the situation and watching a large set of waves come through and rightover the top of our fishing platform and we made the wise but dissapointing decision to give it a miss this time. Another hour hike back to the car and the shoulders and legs were crying for a rest. We headed to one of the local heavily fished rock spots with the idea to send out a few live herring in hope of a shark or possible sambo but those hopes were dashed when we couldn't even find 1 herring! Even after a whole bucket of burley we couldn't see or hook anything! Looks like the day wasn't meant to be so we relaxed on the rocks and had a rum :)
Saturday was booked in for a trip out with my old man in his boat to try some bottom bashing and conditions were looking.... ok... we headed out towards Torbay head to try and hide away from the winds but conditions were worse than forecasted and the seas weren't so comfortable. We put in a few drifts close to the rocks for 1 harlequin and a queen snapper.
Oh and many spikey blowies!
Atleast we brought home a feed!
Sunday was spent 4wding out west cape howe to dunskys beach for a looksey and to test out more of the Pajero. The track out there is pretty bad at the moment with lots of deep dug out holes and many challenging sections which made for a fun drive. Scratched up the car and dented the rear plastic bumper and bent up the tow plug bracket so the day was considered a success... by me, not my wife!
Overall we could have done better on the fishing side of things but it was still an enjoyable trip and the weather wasn't even THAT bad! Heading back down for a whole week next weekend so I'll hopefully have a better report when I return from that one as it should be a solid week of fishing!
Until then... I'll keep dreaming!

Chidley Point last night
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Thu, 2009-10-08 12:29Gday all,
Went fishing last night, the plan was to go to Meads/Mosman Jetty. The GF didnt get off work till later so by the time we got down there there were a few people fishing already. We moved over to Chidley Point and had lines in the water by 7:20pm. We had a few small bites over the course of the night but didnt catch any fish.
The chidley point jetty is not lit, so I think if we try there again we will go earlier to see any holes/snags etc, and will also take a gas lantern to attract any squid that may be in the area.
The interesting thing was that there were 3-4 blokes freediving around 9pm from the sandy beach at chidley pt. This makes me keen to go for a dive ASAP to check if any of the mighy Blue Mannas are in the river yet.

Good Day Off Hillarys
Submitted by Mossie on Thu, 2009-10-08 01:32Well this report is my first and a few months old but work hs been flat out and I havent been gracing the forums as much as I would like... so appologies for the late posting. I have been on fishwrecked for quite a while now and I absolutley love it... so thanks to everyone on here for making it an awesome place to chat and enjoy the stories and resources to help us all become better at the passtime we all love so much.
We started out off Hillarys at about 7:30 with a light S / SW the swell was up slightly but all in all it was looking to be a good day out on the water bar the possibility of an early shower. We headed out to a few of our favoutirte spots that we have off Hillarys. We decided to go for a standard padanoster rig with a slight twist in that we were using a two hook configuration with a slightly smaller hook on the top. The bottom hook had our standard circle hook with skinned occy, squid combo with a lumo squid over the top and the top hook had a Berkley Gulp plastic shad in the green and red colour.
This was my first time trying this setup so I thought that it may take a bit ot tweaking but much to my suprise it didnt need any at all... We had a good mate of ours come out on the boat for the day. He is not that much of a keen fisho but he was keen to come out and see what all the hype is about. We had been fishing for a bout 10 mins and our mate was sitting there like a sore thumb so we though it best to get him setup and fishing like we were (mistake No1). As fate would have it I passed the rod to my mate while we rigged him up in the mean time he sates "Guys I think I've caught the bottom". Upon a closer look the bottom appeard to me moving at a great rate of knots and had his rod bent over a fair way, this wasnt no bottom this was a decent fish!!!!
As it turned out our mate got a few pointers on how to fight a fish from a boat as has he had never really done this sort of fishing before and he boated a nice Dhu .... Well We were stoked for him but at the same time spewing as that could have been me!!!! hahaha. As it turned out the Dhu was hooked on the plastic - it ignored the bait offering and totally smashed the plastic. You gotta love the plastics
As for the rest of the day ... well the Dhuie was the most decent fish of the day. We caught a few Wrasse, Cod and one blackass and most of the fish that were landed were caught on the plastic. It was great being out on the water and the day was just magic. It just goes to show that with a little bit of knowledge gained from reading these forums and my monthly fishing magazines that you need to experiment with the type of baits you use, and especially the way you present your baits when fishing. As proven anything can and usually does happen. Also don't hand your rod to your mate !!!
More reports to come !!
Thanks guys ...
Carl

Exxy report 26th sept - 2nd oct
Submitted by silly on Mon, 2009-10-05 19:04Just got back from a week up at exmouth with the tinnie. Pretty good trip all up with a couple of highlights. Here's a quickish rundown
Arrived fri night set up camp and sat down preparing rigs for the next days session. Woke up to a slight south easter so we decided to head out of tanta's. Tried bottom bashing in some good looking ground in around the 20-30's but couldnt manage anything decent with only the usual suspects (charlie courts) playing the game. After a few hours we called it a day and headed back to camp to "feast" on 2 minute noodles .
Having a shocker of a first day we were up to make amends and actually catch something decent for dinner the next day. Again we set off from tanta's out in roughly the same grounds and managed to pluck a few yellow tailed emperors and blue spotted emps. With a few fish in the bag we set off to find some better grounds out in the 40's but couldnt manage anything decent. Tried some trolling but no takers so we headed back to camp to cook up the emperors. The little yellow tail emperors cook up pretty decent too. Alot better than 2 min noodles haha
Day 3 we decided to give up on bottom bashing for the trip and try more on lure fishing (even tho we arent big lure fisherman). Launched at bundegi and trolled out past the cape and found a small school of bait fish busting up in 4m of water. My mate chucked on a metal and launched a cast in the middle of the bait school and hooked up instantly. After a good little fight up came a 3kg spanglie. Found a few more fish busting up out deeper so we got back on the troll. After a few zig zags we managed a nice 6kg sharkie and an undersize tuskie on a 160DD. Having managed to catch the spanglie in close we anchored up and flicked a few softies around which produced a small gold spot and a few little emperors. Whilst casting a softie i noticed a huge black shadow moving 50m away from the boat. Took me a few seconds to realise " shit! thats a manta". I quickly cut off the softie (knowing that i couldnt cast 50m with it on) and whacked on a 55g twisty. I then casted out towards the manta and BANG i was on. After a good 10min tussle up came this 6kg cobia
Day 4 we lauched nice and early out from tanta's in search of a few mackies. Once we got out into the opening my mate rod went off, Looked like a decent fish but didnt get a chance to see it as the mystery fish had straighten a clip swivel. We were guessing possibly a cobia as it didnt have the typical first run of a mackie and was burying down but we will never know. We got the laser pros back out and i manage a couple of little 6kg spainards. The strong southerly kicked in and ruined and more chance of trolling for the day but 2 mackies in less than an hour was worth the early start.
Day 5 was blown out with strong southerlies. Tried a flick down landbased at the marina and wapet creek but wind was a pain and resulted in no fish.
Day 6 wasnt much better wind wise but with the direction being south easterly, the decision was made to fish inside the reef at tanta's targeting spanglies. Armed with advice and skin deep lures from exmouth tackle we were confident we could land a few. After 20mins of flicking i finally got a decent hit and landed my first lure caught spanglie. He was 3kgs and almost 60cm. Had a ripper of a session with about 8 spanglies landed with the best being 65cm and over 4kgs. They put up a good clean fight and their visual attack on the lure was unbelievable to see in 2m of water. Also caught a nice chinaman which put an awesome fight on the light gear.
The final day we targeted spanglies again on the skin deeps. With 3 big 60cm+ fish being landed we tried for one on a popper but couldnt get one to hit even though a few came up and checked them out. With time running out we called it a trip.
This was my lure after 2 days of fishing. These little lures even attracted the attention of sharks, Big gt's and queenies but with no hook ups.
Caught most of the fish on my Lemax black rose matched to a 3000 freeams kix on 15lb
All in all it was an awesome trip with all decent fish getting caught on lures. Catching spanglies on lures is something i'll never forget and cant wait to nab one on a popper next time round.

Hillaries this morning
Submitted by Leemo on Mon, 2009-10-05 13:08went down to hillaries this morning for a plastics/lure fish with schecky. got down about 830 and had a look at some promising spots. had a few good hits near the resturant and reubs got bitten off by something decent. we then walked out to the lighthouse and casted flickbaits into the channel. i got a smallish skippy but it was good to finally get one on placcies after so long. reub then hooked up to a solid fish. after a short fight, he landed a 70 odd cm snook. we then flicked around the disabled platform and reub hooked up then dropped a fish, but 30 seconds later had a screamer of a run and got bitten/busted off. nice morning to be out there and it wasnt a bad lil session

Quinns Beach
Submitted by Jas04 on Mon, 2009-10-05 11:54Went down to quinns on sat night got there about 5 set up heaps of weed but stuck it out anyway. It started off really quiet but about an hour before sundown got a tailor about 35cm. so i thought good the run is on and i get a feed but that was the only one and no bites after that either devo lol. i had i big rod set up with a yellow tail on the end because i really wanted a mulla. About 15mins before last light it took off and i never got a chance to turn it and it pinged. so i rigged back up and back out it went. about 2 hrs later my mates rod got ripped out the rod holder and got dragged down the beach when he finally got to it he was in for a hell of a fight, about 20 mins later a massive ray came up at least 25kg this thing was over a meter across good fun but still no mulla. After that it was very quiet and the weed was getting the better of us. so i decided to use the tailor for fresh bait as i only had one anyway lol.
first cast and i was on and i had to admit i was very hopefull this time. i have caught plenty of stingrays an this did not feel the same so i was really excited. after about 10mins i got it gaft an on the beach it was a gummy shark it went about 150cm and gutted, head, fins and tail cut off it wieghed 5kg.
After that it was about midnight and the weed had really moved in so we decided to call it a night. This was my first time at quinns and it was well worth the trip as i live south of the river. This will be a place i visit again very soon.
BUT the hunt continues for my first mulla lol
ps sorry i forgot the camara spewing

weekend
Submitted by Bodie on Sun, 2009-10-04 10:27Went out a couple times this weekend
Friday off work, went out from Two rocks. Slow day but fantastic weather, was very calm.
lots of fish about, sounder was lit up everywhere we went, but not many fish were interested....except the sambos they were everywhere!! ranging from 5kg to 12kg
Managed to hook quite a few, landed a few and busted off on a few (lost 2 $40 jigs :( )
also caught a couple pinkys, but was very slow. I think there were plenty of dhus around, could see them on the coral in 1's or 2's but just didnt want to bite a thing.
Then last night went for a fish with scano down a local spot. Been a while since we'd done some land based stuff (first time since i bought the boat).
started off quite slow, but once again the weather was great, nice sea breeze, little swell. Just after dark the tailor came about. We probably landed about 12 or 14 between us, ranging from 35-40cm. Only kept a couple each for a feed and rest were released.
Renewed my faith in shore based fishing thats for sure.

Today with Southern Cross charters
Submitted by chrisp on Sat, 2009-10-03 17:19G'day All,
Headed out today from mindarie with southern cross.The conditions were super sloppy which resulted in seasickness for a lot of poeple onboard.
We Fished around the 40-50mtre mark and i picked up a couple of nice Pinks.Being a old man snapper i released this one after a quick pic
10 mins of so later hooked onto something heavy and bit slower than a pink and after 5min slog pulled a my first dhuie on a plastic.
Was a good day out even though it was cut short because of a boat full of sick people.
Cheers

Off HIllarys Today
Submitted by Paul Cunningham on Fri, 2009-10-02 17:43I spent the morning aboard 'The Spaghetti Strainer' with Steve Mattaboni. The weather was perfect and it was a nice slow drift. First fish of the morning was Steve's Sambo on his Stradic 4000 and TwinCraft rod, went hard and was a great start.
Next fish on the boat was my biggest Baldie yet, pulled hard and am sure will taste great tonight.
After getting harrased by diving birds wanting our baits we bailed and headed out a touch further, this time it was my turn for a Sambo. Good fun on a Stella 6000 and Deep Jig 200.
The bites started to slow and wind picked up so me moved to give our first spot a try on the way home. Last drift was just set and with my bottom rig down i thought that I would drop down a whole driftbaited squid on my TwinPower and Viper. Packing the boat up I glanced to see the line ripping off my spool and flicked the bail arm over to be met with what we thought was another Sambo with how hard it went. Being a bit silly with this fish, it all got serious when below the boat appeared a nice hump headed Pinkie.
In total we landed 2 Samson fish, 1 Pink Snapper, 2 Baldchin Groper, 1 undersise Dhufish, 2 Blackarse released, 1 Shark, 2 Port Jacksons and 1 King George Whiting.

Family Trip to Steep Point/Denham
Submitted by Pete D on Fri, 2009-10-02 12:55Headed off early (5am) Saturday week ago for Steep Point – arrived about 4.30pm. A bit of a delay with a trailer tyre blowout near Cataby and hence a stop in Gero for 2 brand new Duellers. The other tyre looked very good, but was 14 years old – wasn’t going to take the chance.
Setup camp…and then the wind started! Heard the saying – ‘You should have been here last week’. Anyway it was a family trip, so I wasn’t overly bothered about not being able to use the tinnie non stop and sand castle building can be fun (I kept telling myself this).
First trip out to the fault line on Sunday morning (which was the best day), but that was only for a few hours before the water was uncomfortable for a small tinnie. With a nice cod jigged up for dinner I was happy.
The fish shots are few, so I’ll start off with one.
Staged shot, as I wasn’t game to pull the new camera out on the boat;
Had some of him as Sashimi for arvo drinks – very, very nice.
Just off the bitumen;
The first hill (tyres at 20psi) was very easy this trip (spent over an hour on it last trip) and the rest of the 4wd’g was uneventful. Dodged a few ‘secret squirrel’ army groups on the way in aswell.
Camp set up in the bay;
Testing the tinnie out (its been 4 years since I used it);
Favourite part of the whole trip for our young one, Zoe – toasting marshmallows in the evening (can’t blame her);
The ‘point pic’;
The rough side;
Zoe checking out Kal and Tapout’s catch;
Beer o’clock time. Yeah, forgot the brew glasses;
Warming up the shower water;
Ranger Pam hard at work installing bollards;
Just sized Pinkie for dinner;
Thorny Devil on the way out;
Spent the long weekend in Denham. Watched the footy, caught plenty of squid off the jetty at night and even caught a few squid sight fishing the shallows. Most squid were in the 1kg range too!
Sunset;
Love the 5 shots per second with re focus on the new Pentax K7.
Raven fly by;
Did a day trip to Monkey Mia for the young one including the 3 hour cruise checking out the Dugongs and dolphins. Highlight was seeing a 2 day old dolphin.
Feed time;
Model pelican;
Closeup;
Bub Dolphin;
More Dollys;
Bloody cold water;
Did a day trip up to Peron Peninusla (spent a few weeks up there 9 years ago). More camping spots now and much easier 4wd’g.
The point;
Peron Crab;
Emu tracks;
Monitor tracks;
Overall a great trip, despite the lack of fish....but they will come next trip!
Cheers Pete

Christmas Island
Submitted by DazSamFishing on Thu, 2009-10-01 19:04Well, I've finally found the time to post a quick snapshot of my latest trip to Christmas Island. I was lucky enough to tag along with my mate, Jayson, for 1 week in mid-September.
It was simply spectacular. The hospitality was excellent, the company was excellent, the fishing was excellent... the weather was 'fishable'.
Most days were quite windy, however, there was always a spot to fish around Christmas Island due to it's rugged geography.
Mark (the guide of Shorefire) was extremely friendly & helpful. Going far & beyond to ensure our stay was an experience we would never forget.
The popper fishing was excellent - the GT's weren't massive (biggest around the 20kg mark), however, the yellowfin tuna were in massive numbers & of good size (can't get enough of casting poppers & stickbaits at YFT) - we had a pack of sailfish following our poppers on the second day - Jayson had a stickbait snap in half on a good GT.
We threw poppers & stickbaits, only managed to jig a small amount of time (the wind was a problem, so we couldn't keep our mark for more than a few minutes - most of the good jigging spots were exposed to the wind). We also trolled from A to B to pick up a wahoo or 2 for dinner.
Anyway, it was a great trip. So good, I've already arranged time off for next years trip.
I've included a few pics.
Daz.

bagged a couple...finally!
Submitted by gumbyconts on Wed, 2009-09-30 22:00well headed out to cockburn by 10 this morning and stayed 2 hrs. wind was up and there was quite a bit of water movement, although some what clear.
i tried for some squid, based on the fact that ive heard they fire after a storm. well i did catch something, but only one.
with the itch to wet a line still present i waited it out at home and did some uni work. well i tried to but i got stuck reading the new western angler regarding the tailor fishing through spring. i have to say it was a great article for those who havent caught one of a decent size before in the central metro. i had been trying to catch the elusive tailor since summer with zero luck.
luckily i live right next to the areas mentioned in the article, so i decided to head out to grant street or north street at about 5pm.
but first the rig set up. after fiddling around too many times on the beach after loosing tackle, i took the articles advice and rigged up a couple of running sinker rigs with a double lead.
i eventually got there at about 530, and cast away...but no luck. again and again, still nothing. this went on for about an hour as the sun hit the horizon. about 5 mins after sundown, with enough light still to see, something felt heavy on my rod. i must admit i didnt feel any nibbles or even the hookup, but who cares, i felt it fighting and brought it in quickly. it ended up measuring 42cm and 800g, a fat fish...and my largest fish to date!
i cast and cast again, lost a few baits...but still couldnt feel and nibbles. on one particular cast the bail arm closed over and PING, i lost my tackle. luckily i followed the advice in the article, having a spare rig ready.
just about ready to head off BAM, another...well this was smaller at 36cm and quite a bit thinner.
well damn i was happy a first and pb in a single session! looks like tailor fillets for dinner tomorrow.

Pinks in Cockburn Sound
Submitted by SteveCorreia on Wed, 2009-09-30 10:11This is what people were pulling out of the Sound on the weekend:
Some of them were massive and fish were just peeling off the surface school to hit baits.
Andrew reckoned the biggest were pushing a metre

OUT FROM JURIEN TODAY
Submitted by chrisp on Tue, 2009-09-22 19:59Gday All,
Headed up to jurien last night with five mates to head out with whitey from Seasport charters.I had heard there was plenty of Sambos around already so i was keen to test out all my new jigging gear which has been gathering dust because of the recent crap weather.
We stopped on the way out on some bait grounds and filled up the live tank and a few minuted later arrived at the first wreck.THe Sambo's were thick although not huge.I jigged up aroung 6 between 8 and 15kg's and then decided to have a rest and use some bait.this was smashed by a bigger sambo which went 25kg and fun on the PE3 gear.
After that we had all nearly had enough of sambos with probably 30 others boated with the biggest going 27kg so i switched to soft plastics and got.......more sambos and a mutton bird.(F@#!!)
Whitey kept us moving to chase down some pinkies and it paid off we bagged 7 ranging from 45cm through to 76cm this was the biggest one i got on a Plastic.
Anyway it was a awesome day out with heaps of Sambo's and a good number of baldys and pinkies for a feed.Gotta give props to whitey for being a top operator,know's the place like the back of his hand and will take small groups out a a very reasonable price.Will have to go back again soon for sure.
Cheers,
chris

High & Dry At Jacks Creek
Submitted by Marky on Tue, 2009-09-22 13:23Hey all, Got out to Jacks creek south of broome the other weekend.. Being pretty bad conditions for it with the massive tides(full moon) and the southerly breeze belting up the coast, only had a few trolls and a quick throw of some lures around the mouth.. Left the get away plan about half too late and ended up getting stranded for 4 1/2 hours at 5pm... Needless to say the missus wasnt impressed not having warm clothing or anything... Was a nice sunset and moon rise thou.... The tide went out about 3km from the dunes.. Alot further than i thought it would go.... Couple of pics to follow Cheers Mark.

Submitted by sixinchrhino on Sat, 2009-09-19 22:03Went out on Port Bouvard Charters with the old man for our birthdays today ... man did I get sick (sea sick that is really really sea sick.. for over an hour) anyway after that was over (it waas a whole day charter) we went to some ground where the samson fish play.
Dropped the line down and bang got a bite, started to pull up and nothing, bang, another hit started to pull and again nothing, bang another hit started to pull and bloody hell was it heavy (I make solid timber dining tables now and I thought they were heavy). About half way up to the boat a guy 4 people left and a guy two people right of me got tangled and tangled my line as well.
The deckie sorted them out and I still had my fish, started winding again and then my dad had a fish that tangled in my line as well, so he managed to get his fish up, the deckie sorted him out and I started to pull again. By this time everyone had their fish up and I waas free and clear to hoist away.... god damn this is a heavy fish I thought, then someone further down pointed and said 'who's got the double header" and I was the only line in the water.... AWESOME.... I pulled up 2 samsons on one line the smaller one about 90cm, the other.... 1.2m.... damn thing broke my fish scale when I tried to weigh it.
I'll post pics as soon as I can... fishing in perth.. can't beat it.

Exmouth trips
Submitted by carnarvonite on Sat, 2009-09-19 18:53Went up to Exmouth to see the kids and have a quick fish while Jeff had time off the trawler over the full moon.
Got two reds and a spangly and fed an albatross on the first day.
On the second day Adam came along for the ride.Dropped the boat in at Tantas,set the trolling gear up and headed out towards the hundred metre line.
Adam got a double header of goldband and time to troll south.Got a small red,an at the time an unknown to us but I've forgotten its name and a shark that released itself right next to the boat.From there is was decided to head towards the south passage and on the way raised a small marlin but unfortunately no hook up.All in all not much return for effort but then again we cannot have it all our way all the time.

Sunshine Monties adventure
Submitted by Colin Hay on Wed, 2009-09-16 08:04Well I had better give a report on how we went at the Monties, leaving on Monday night from Dampier we sought to set sail however huuiee the wind god had other ideas, be-bloody- calmed we were so we motored out of the Harbour at around 5 knots heading for Enderby Island hoping to pick up the breeze as we got clear of the archipelago.
Well we did get a breezer, for all of about five minutes when we again became becalmed so what was expected to be an 8 or 9 hour sail turned out to be a 15-16 hour plod under the drone of a diesel engine.
Arriving much later than we expected we elected not to fish on Tuesday and instead visited Ground Zero on Tremille Island as we had anchored in one of its bays.
Wednesday dawned clear and calm and the three of us piled into the 12 foot dinghy to fish the northern end of the island. Calm it may have been but as we neared the northern end the water rapidly shallowed and the current increased until we were battling though a raging rip. Clearing it we headed out past an islet that, from a distance, looked just like a cruiser.
We stopped first and drifted in 60 feet of water near a brilliant drop off but apart from losing a rubber jig to a large something Pete and Andy went bite-less so it was suggested we head deeper to at least maximise our chances of catching a red emp. Only heading out another 50 yards we were in 120 foot of water so down the baits went again.
Lez, you would not be surprised to learn that I was using the $9 special, light sinker and mulie for bait. Was that a touch? Ummm, with the rod bent double clearly so and after a spirited fight a lightly coloured 70cm coral trout slipped into the net.
Next drop, same result (well almost,) having commented that now all I wanted was a red after an even better fight the net slips under a classically coloured red.
And so it went on but with all of us hooking fish that were simply unstoppable. We landed more CTs, absolute horse NW snapper to specimen size and other ooglies. Andy hooked a small Mackie and thought he had lost it when it bolted to the surface leaving slack line all over the place however what it was actually doing was seeking to escape the jaws of a totally lit up blue marlin which then proceeded to circle to boat to make sure we all got a good look – all only a km or so from shore.
Fishing on Thursday was equally electric but with more and even larger spanglies – boy do they go, final drop of the day resulted in my fighting what I thought was the best fish of the trip, wrong, just a double header of huge spanglies.
Returning to the yacht through rough water we had the trepidation of watching Andy lifting the fuel tank as it neared empty...........would we make it as the current would leave us stranded if we ran out, Pete grabbed the hull just as the tank contained a measly two tablespoons.
We decided in view of the strong wind to pull anchor and head home (no outboard fuel anyway) and we sailed overnight in strong and very favourable winds back to Dampier hitting over 11 knots and having to take two reefs into the mainsail as the gunnel was in the water.
I filleted the fish on that crazy angle watching the plumes of bioluminescence in our wake, the photo of the boat and the sparklies evidences the speed we were travelling.
In all – great great trip, amazing fishing, dugongs, marlin, bay full of gardies – just too quick, you could easily spend a month and not scratch the surface – cant wait to get back but started a job yesterday .........oh well hurry up Pete and buy your Cat .
Thanks
Gordon aka Sunshine
