The Shredder - Ultimate Burley Machine

We make and use a lot of burley.  Having upgraded to the use of a commercial mincer we still had the hazardous use of a band saw to cut up the frames, etc to a manageable size that fit into the mincer.  I don’t think it is a matter of if, but when a serious injury would be caused by handling wet frozen fish in the presence of a moving saw.

Dean owns and runs an engineering workshop and turned his mind to a better option for making large fish into small pieces.  The brief was to be able to load a whole frame and turn it into something that could be minced.  After quite a bit of research the concept of the Shredder was born.

It started with the steel plates that could all be cut out of a single sheet using the computer controlled flatbed plasma cutter.  Forge the axels and gears, assemble and lathe for consistency, add the bearings, construct the mounting box and the cutting bed was made.

Next was the housing as you wouldn’t want to get any part of your body near the cutting bed.  Add the motor and chain drive and it was ready for a test.

Let’s just say the Shredder is evil.  It absolutely destroyed anything that was put in it to make chunks 10mm by 6mm.  The test was a complete success, although some minor adjustments will make it even better.

Next up is the hopper, stand and wheels so it can be moved without the forklift.  Dean and Wal should be congratulated in making such an awesome device so that all fish waste is reused and nothing is wasted.

Plastics rod help

Yes...I've used the search function.....lol....extensively.

trying to find a suitable dedicated plastics rod for boat. usually fish 35-60m but I guess would like to also target snapper in the shallows occasionally as well.

Seems to be lots out there but my dilemma is that I need a two piece. travelling to monties soon and also anything over 6 foot is a bit of a hassle to go into storage on my boat. would also have to buy/make a new rod tube.

looked at the DB64 CJ but fear it's slightly too heavy for my purposes. (might be fine though ????)

really welcome any suggestions.

Pic- It's bloody windy at Palm Beach. Will it be Snapper time?

Rotto trench - is it still worth a shot for a marlin?

Was thinking of hitting rotto trench next weekend if conditions stay as seabreeze is predicting at the moment cos we never got out there this summer  (only got a 19 footer so has to be pretty much flat with no wind for us to go out there) Had a look at Meteye on the BOM site and looks to me like theres still plenty of warm water out there. Anybody think its a waste of time? were still pumped to get our first marlin after Olwyn ruined our  Exxy marlin trip (still havent F*&$%n gotten over that!!)  Does anybody reckon we wasting our time? the FADs arent out there either im guessing?  thanks for any feedback

South West Storm

Just noticed the latest warnings for this weekends weather say Geographe Bay will be the worst hit by tidal surge's

"HIGHER THAN NORMAL TIDES may cause FLOODING OF LOW-LYING COASTAL AREAS. DANGEROUS SURF CONDITIONS are likely which could cause SIGNIFICANT BEACH EROSION. The Geographe Bay area is likely to experience the worst of these tidal conditions, with the storm surge expected to peak during Saturday morning, with a secondary lower peak late Saturday evening."

Guess it's that time of year but it look's like we are going to get dumped with a considerable amount of rain and a lot of the local rivers could be subject to flooding as well.

"For the 24 hours to 9am Saturday rainfall totals of 20mm to 40mm are forecast for the South West District. Widespread rainfall of 30mm to 50mm with isolated falls up to 80mm are forecast for the 24 hours to 9am Sunday. Isolated falls are likely to be in the coastal parts of the District.

Catchments where flooding may develop include:

Harvey River

Collie River

Preston River

Bussleton Coast Catchment

Lower Blackwood River

Donnelly River

Warren River

Shannon River"

Netting for mullet in Mandurah estuaries

We are planning to have a go at netting for mullet in the estuaries down around Mandurah, have a 30 metre net and studied up the rules, all ok with that.  We will be shore based and other than knowing the rules don't have a clue as to what to look out for in regards to good water to place the net.  Our basic plan is to look for areas the fish may use to travel around e.g. Shallow channels etc..

If anyone has any helpful advice to help us out in getting a few Mullet e.g. Tide timing, weed v sand, edge of sandbars etc I'd be happy to hear from you.

Thanks

G

Telstra mobile phone data

I'm with Telstra for my mobile phone as is my wife. We have noticed in the past 3 weeks we seem to be using our phone internet data a lot quicker than we have in the past and we are not using our phones anymore than usual. I was talking to a workmate and he was saying the same thing. I was wondering if anyone has experienced the same thing?  I'll be ringing Telstra to see what they say...

Sport Or Heavy tackle?

just out of interest I wanted to know what people's thoughts on tackle were. Would you rather have the the action and suspense of a light tackle battle or whinch them in with heavy tackle. Personaly I like the light gear.

boat floation

Hey guys,

recently snapped the helm in the boat and needed to rip the floor out to access the cables to replace the entire system, its a Savage 15ft ali centre console, middle seat removed and floor and console put in by previous owner.

needed to remove the foam from under the floor and stupidly threw the foam away thinking itl be easy to replace it with better stuff... well ive been doing alot of searching on the net to find out about the correct foam to use and have found so many

do's and donts that contradict each other its killing me!

does anyone know which boat floation :

is the most cost affective (fairly important)

will give the most floation,

wont disolve after fuel /oil and wont absorb water

reaction with the ali is also a worry

ive heard pool noodles are good but that could just be a rumour...

any help will be extremly handy and appreciated.

Monties 2015 - Advice wanted.

Bit the bullet and heading off to the Monties for a week early next month - cant wait!

We'll be hitting up the tackle shops to stock up on new toys before we go, any suggestions from seasoned Monties campaigners would be welcome. Planning on a bit of everything, bottom bouncing, trolling, flicking in the shallows, snorkelling etc.

Any must have bits of kit? Favourite lures or rigs? Basically any suggestions from those that have been there and done that.

Cheers,

BD.

Jerry Can

Hi folks, we returned from Steep Point on Thursday 30/4/15 after a week there.
We lost a green steel jerry can full of diesel somewhere on the track in.
If anyone here has or finds it, can you please let me know as it is not mine.
I am just interested to see how good our Fishwrecked network is. Lol

cheers & be safe

First Bag Out

Hi Guys

First report in a while, 14 months building a house plus a motor rebuild to the (New Old Boat) 115 Johno 2 stroke let go of the rings...long story. any way trip out wiht a mate started slow but ended well with my first decent metro dhue on plastic...by this stage my mate had change to bait after a small dhue and baldie caught on plastic...the persistance paid off, squid came from 55m and tube went 31cm, suprised to catch blow fish at the same depth also. Baby elf and halco jig with imprivised assist hooks helping.

what happened to all the whiting??

Been out a few times to known, producing spots - from inshore out to the 30's, no fat sand whiting to be seen (none at all), small flatties, yep...

Pro's dragging nets?? Been like this for 12 months or so.

Any ideas??

CARNARFIN 2015

Fish ID

Well lets see if the uploading of photos ISSUE has been fixed..

BTW what fish is this??

Sounder screen shots

Can any member put up a sounder screen shot of the artificial reefs (concrete squares) located of Busselton and Bunbury.
The reason I'm asking is that these structures are constructed of open square concrete boxes and I was wondering, as there is not much body to them just how they would show on a sounder.
Any posting of sounder snaps of such structures would be most appreciated.
Thanks good F/W people.

D9 on HDS10 with Structure scan

this one is for Anyfishwilldo

some pics from the other week in the Sound chasing Salmon, apologies for the quality/dirty screen.

First pic is side/downscan, in second pic I had fish symbols "depth" on, and the sounder interpreted the wreck as fish?
