Fishing in Albany
Submitted by commocean on Thu, 2014-12-25 19:52heading down to albany for the first week of january staying at the kalgan river and have done plenty of fishing in the river and beach fishing at salmon holes, etc. but this time is the first with the boat so we will be planning to head out in the boat more often than not but dont know where to start and what to target. The boat is a 4m dinghy with a 25hp so will mainly be in oyster harbour and maybe head out into the sound in the weather is right
any tips, info, spots or even general areas for whiting or squid etc would be greatly appreciated
pm me any secrets spots if you dont want everyone knowing about them, but no worries if you want to keep your spots to yourself
cheers, commocean
also if anyone watched the fwa episode a few weeks ago where ryan was fishing for kgws in albany was that cheynes head like he mentioned, i hope not because thats a fair travel from the kalgan

another crayfish reg conundrem
Submitted by aweall on Wed, 2014-12-24 00:31possession limits are 24 per person
does that mean 24 per licensed person (which would mean only licensed people could be in possesion of crays caught recreationally) or 24 per person in a household
or if i give some to a friend 24 per both households or i could catch 8 a day and give batches of 24 to friends now if i have these friends or family living with me does that mean each person can own 24 crays?
this is the only reg i could find
Subject to regulation 16E(3A)(a)(iv) and (b)(iv), (3B)(a)(iv) and (b)(iv) and (3C)(a)(iv) and (b)(iv), for the purposes of section 51(1) of the Act, the maximum quantity of rock lobster that a person may be in possession of is 24 rock lobsters.
my head hurts

Missing Cray pots
Submitted by Willy on Tue, 2014-12-23 22:21Ladies and Gentlemen
I am an avid cray diver and sometime cray potter.
Now, whilst I sympathise for those who have lost pots due to nefarius never do wells, I have come to the following conclusions to explain why pots go sometimes AWOL
1. Not enough weight. Simple, a strong swell, current or wind moves the pot. It may become tangled with reef and the owner assumes they are poached.
2. The float was not marked, so I have heard recently that Fisheries will impound such a pot. Did you mark your float (as required)? Did you mark your pot with your gear ID (good advice to do this)?
3. A boat has inadvertently run over you float or the rope. This occurs due to:
a. Inattention on behalf of the skipper
b. Too much rope on the surface
c. It is night time and the floats are hard to see
d. Your pot was in a shipping channel. Maybe not the best location.
e. Your knots and equipment were not adequate for the rigours of life at sea
4. Lastly many of my mates have lost pots, been poached or had a gutful and given up. Rather than staying silent, REPORT it and if enough people complain, maybe something will be done about it.
Sincerely
Willy

Runaway Craypot
Submitted by Belly Fish on Mon, 2014-12-22 17:21Interesting dilemma.
Pulled our craypots out on Sunday after an awesome season.
Got to one of mine and thought, jeez, someone set theirs awful close to mine....in fact I thought I'd have trouble being able to put it without running over his rope. There was probably 25 metres on the surface. Anyway, lets run up on it and see what's going on.
Turns out there was a brand new plastic pot floating and tangled in my pot, with all the rope floating on the surface.
First dilemma....had to pull this dudes pot first and untangle it. Technically illegal. Once done, we could see it had no weight at all...still baited!. Then thought, I'm not bringing this back in as the 7th pot on board....asking for trouble. Fisheries were at the ramp (Ocean Reef) as we left. Motored away from the rest of our pots and chucked it overboard. Second dilemma, as you can imagine, all that did was put a floating pot with two floats and 25 metres or so of rope on the surface, ready to catch the next unsuspecting boat propellor. I couldn't do it...I said stuff Fisheries, I need to bring this in as it's a navigation hazard, and I'll give it to Fisheries to contact the owner.
Anyway, got back in and Fisheries had gone, so I just left it near the launch ramps.
What would you have done?

Family fishing
Submitted by soupster51 on Mon, 2014-12-22 15:15I took my family for a day trip over to GI recently. My daughter and I got into some squid, she loves it. Then landed a 49cm bluespot first cast at my 'secret' location, flicking lures along the beach.

Cape Nat Tuna Advice
Submitted by MT on Mon, 2014-12-22 14:44I'll be fishing out from the cape for a few weeks after Christmas and looking to find Tuna (Yellowfin specifically). Does anyone have any advice on where you're more likely to find them and the best methods for targetting them? (Beyond the obvious look for bait schools and birds etc, etc..)
I've trolled up stripey's and SBT's around Rocky point before but for now i'm really mainly interested in targetting yellowfin.
Any helpful hints much appreciated.
Cheers!

Trailer Suspension Repairs
Submitted by sunshine on Mon, 2014-12-22 09:06Having noted a broken leaf spring on both sides of my trailer I spoke and got a recommendation from Trailer Parts to take it to Fremantle Trailers.
Was pretty concerned that, at this time of the year, I had little chance of getting it done before Christmas and wouldn't risk towing it far loaded with a 6.8 as the remaining springs looked crappy and wouldn't put other people on the road at risk by driving it in that condition.
Well I am glad to report amazing service from Fremantle trailers despite this busy time of the year, they also discovered a spun bearing rendering one axle unserviceable and rather than mess around given the age of the trailer I asked that they replace both and am more than satisfied with the work, trailer looks like new and all done super fast enabling me to use it over the Chrissy break.
Nice to actually receive top service at this time of year - thanks Paul and the team

skirted lures ready to go
Submitted by randall df223 on Sat, 2014-12-20 17:05I won a couple of vent right ally bait skirted lures in a social media competition. I also got the wife to buy a couple when she was last in singapore. well I have them rigged and ready to go.
I can change hooks easily when needed just by undoing the shackle. I can also introduce an addition hook (back to back) by shackling one straight through the eye of the hook.
ready to go and find those metro tuna (when this wind buggers off.. )

Garmin 78sc review
Submitted by Super peg on Fri, 2014-12-19 16:51Hey Guys,
looking at getting a better handheld for my fishing
The Garmin GPSmap 78sc come preloaded with Aus and NZ bluechart, I use the slightly leser model (78s) at work so I'm sold on the unit and such but
just curious as to how good the marine charts are?
my Navionics on my phone does the job but once out the main metro area (just south of Bunbury) I loose all the charts...
will this be the same on the GPS charts that come preloaded with the garmin? has anyone used it?
I'm hoping that the charts will be for all the way around Australia, not just the metro areas.
I've posted a link below to the unit with its description.
hope someone can help
Cheers, KP
