To all the Potheads
Submitted by JoRn on Mon, 2014-12-15 15:07Not sure if this should be a heads up for all "potheads" - Cray Potters, but I just read the rules and I cannot ascertain what rules I broke.
I usually drop my pots at Rottnest, but this year I wanted to get amongst the whites. As my parents live right next to the boat ramp, it was ideal to leave my boat there and go with my old man to check the pots.
Anyway, long story short, i purchased my dad a license on the way to checking the pots as i had set two of my own pots few days back. As luck had it, first pot we pulled 25 legals.
Beauty, kept 16 of the biggest and returned the rest in the water. Didn't even bother checking the other one as it was a super lumpy and windy out there and i had to go to work.
Returned to the boat ramp, got checked by fisheries, showed him my license and my dads. Told him we only checked one pot and had 25 ( being boastful). He asked if my dad had pots out there and i said no, i just got him the license this morning on the way out.
He then told me that i was not allowed to do that, and he had to have pots in the water if he wanted his 8. Now i was a bit confused and perplexed, i admit didn't read the brochure throughly, so i thought i was in the the wrong...FECK.
With all the boaters returning, here two Asian guys with the fisheries doing a bust, i was rather embrassed.
anyway, details taken down, and was advised that the infringement would be around $400, took 8 of the crays back and threw them back in the water...
anyway, spoke to local fishing store and they weren't aware either, reading the brochure they talk about a boat limit and possession limit, no more than 2 pots per license but nothing about what i have been pinged for.
im not claiming to be an expert manner, i could be wrong still, can someone englighten me? if i am wrong, just heads up if you want to take some friends out with licenses and decide to buy on the day, coz 8 crays is easily worth more then $40, just quietly.

Lazy Craying - Cut area and South
Submitted by crasny1 on Mon, 2014-12-15 13:53Hi Potters
Just wondering whether it is worth dropping the pots shallow still. Cant get out deep due to work (always) and dont need a freezer filler to be happy. So limited to a shallow dash before and after work.
Question- am I wasting my time or might I get the few I might like. Would bait heavy as the freezer is filled with all sorts for crab or cray bait. Just been to busy to have a chance yet after reading all the glowing reports.

Submitted by randall df223 on Mon, 2014-12-15 13:22
If Stellas are such a top quality reel, why do I see so many for sale online?
If I was to spend that much money I would be making sure I was getting what I wanted in the first place...

Boat Wrap Part 3 - Completion - It's All About the Fish
Submitted by Mick C on Sun, 2014-12-14 17:33After a couple of months of planning, design and finally installation, the boat wrap we have put so much work into has been completed. Let’s just say it came out very nicely and whilst the design may not be for everyone, those that matter are very happy with it.
It was a fair mission to put together. From the original idea, the first element was to collect all of the images. This was not a particularly easy task in that finding the right images was quite a job in itself. A bank of images (Dolphin Fish, Tuna, Mackerel, Tailor [Blue Fish], Baitfish) were obtained commercially from a US professional underwater photographer - this guy was an absolute pleasure to deal with and gave us a lot of photos for a very fair price. The coral reef could also be purchased commercially but getting the other images at a reasonable price was just too much of a hurdle – why do some people want to retire on every job? It was then that I wrote a post asking for member assistance with the images and a big thank you to Beau who could provide a quality Dhu (http://fishwrecked.com/forum/boat-wrap-part-1-request-member-assistance). In the end I had to resort to getting images of a pinkie, baldie and cray that I had caught and working up the images to remove fingers, backgrounds, etc. There are plenty of images out there but when you want to put them on a boat that is >7m in length then they have to be high resolution.
Once the initial design was complete, we sought member feedback as you can always miss something when you are so close to it (http://fishwrecked.com/forum/boat-wrap-part-2-member-comment-requested). The feedback we got was really appreciated and the meaningful comments were about keeping the demersals near the reef and giving the impression that something was herding the baitfish. Although we thought long and hard about how this could be done, in the end we were happy with the initial design (with some changes) and we were on a tight deadline to complete and sign off so that the wrap could be made. Rest assured, they were good comments that were appreciated and any future designs will take these matters into account.
My good mate who has the graphic business came over this week to attend my birthday (a number that I won’t go into). He brought the print with him and it was time to install. Installing a wrap is no simple process, especially on a boat which has so many changes in angle, deep chine lines and extrusions. Although there were a couple of little issues in installation onto such a complex shape, I think the end result is a credit to my mate that he could do such an expert job in difficult circumstances.
A boat wrap is really a good way to give your “pride and joy” a character of its own. The raw material and printing technology now days is excellent and you can pretty much make any design that you can imagine. There is a fair bit to it though and I would be happy to answer any questions that members have if you are thinking of giving it a go. Feel free to PM me should you wish any more information.

Freezing crays - methods??
Submitted by ctan1968 on Sun, 2014-12-14 09:58Hi all,
What are people's thoughts in freezing uncooked crays?
Traditionally I drown my crays then individually wrap them up in 500mm square BOPP plastic wrapping sheet. This was commonly called "Cray Wrap" which commercial use to wrap up crays. I found it kept the crays in good codition when frozen for months.
I have exhausted my supply of the plastic and cannot seem to get the same stuff anymore.
1. Can anyone give me the heads up on where I can get some more? Use to get it from Dysons Plastics in Balcatta but they have closed down.
2. Are there any other methods to freeze uncooked crays?
Pots will be permanantly coming out of the water in about 4 days time.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Chris

Shimano Combo Review
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sat, 2014-12-13 17:45I am looking at a boat combo that will be used irregularly to chase Mulloway, Snapper and the odd Du/Sambo but I want something decent all the same.
After a look of researching I have all but decided on a 5000 Sustain matched with a Type J S643.
Has anyone used the S643 and can let me know how it goes?

Furuno 295 problem
Submitted by sealure on Sat, 2014-12-13 12:40A friend of mine has a Furuno 295 with a 200B-8B transducer mounted at the back of his Razerline. He is absolutely meticulous about equipment and its maintenance.
On Saturday 29th Nov. we were in about 20 meters off City Beach. Clear skies. In such shallow water my friend decided to reduce pulse length to Short 1. Minutes later when he touched the gain control all sounder function was lost. One could just make out some details on a very dark screen. Bottom was lost.
The unit, bought in Perth, is 3 years old and to date had functioned perfectly. This was the first time he had manually altered the pulse length.
The 295 was taken to the experts. The main board and another were "blown".
The fuses were still in tact.
He has been told it was a surge problem.
He has been advised that in future he should have a surge protector.
Questions
If it was a surge why are his fuses still in tact
If it was a surge would one not expect to see his GPS give a hiccough at the time
Do members have surge protectors installed
Anyone experienced similar problems with a 295
My friend is up for a new unit and understandably is not a happy camper
Would really appreciate any input from those with electronic knowledge

Lowrance Elite 7 HDI
Submitted by jeda on Sat, 2014-12-13 11:16Hey fella's, I'm after some advice on the Lowrance 7HDI combo. I'm lookig at getting one for myself and was wondering if it's a decent unit? Im sure this has come up before on here but i cant find it. It seems well priced at $700 odd and comes with the gold card. Most of my fishing is 25-70m. Will this suit my fishing? Is the transducer that it comes with alright? Is it hard to install or should i take it to the shop? Any Advice would be great. $800 is my budget stretched to the limit for alternatives if you have any.
Merry Xmas

Please explain the WRL migration
Submitted by randall df223 on Sat, 2014-12-13 08:08I read a lot on here about the "whites" walking.... and i think i understand that they start the season in shallow and then walk out deeper as the season progresses?
Can someone knowledgeable in the life cycle of WRL please explain it in 200 words or less?
Do the eggs hatch in close and they stay inshore for a number of years before walking? are they referred to whites because they have shed their shells? How often do they shed their shells? How many times in their life cycle do they walk? is it just a one off?
very interested to understand them better.
Cheers guys.
