Not sure if I believe this guy? Calling knot gurus
Submitted by Super peg on Thu, 2015-01-01 19:09http://youtu.be/oZIJpR7ttdA Hope that comes up as a link, if not, YouTube how NOT to join braid to leader. Came across this video while just browsing, he seems to discredit the back to back uni, I have tied it this way many a times, it's great for out in the boat or if the bite is on. It's a double uni from what I can see and it has always worked for me. Just curious on what others think?

How's the fishing out of Mandurah lately?
Submitted by beau on Thu, 2015-01-01 17:13So I might have access to my uncles boat next week fishing out of Mandurah. He doesnt really have much luck so I really need to impress by bringing back some fish haha. Just wondering how its fishing out on the bank for pinkies and dhus and just out to the mid 30s. Up here I usually anchor and burley on the back of the bank at sunrise for snapper, should I try the same down there? I noticed ffb out of the cut is only a few mile and its put me off a bit being so close to shore, is it worth heading down to the bouvard reefs or even NW out of the cut where the bank is a but further out?
I havent commited to anything yet, it really depends on what advice I get from here.
Thanks guys

Tonight's chances
Submitted by 420casts on Thu, 2015-01-01 15:35 My mate and I are heading out for a flick to bring in the new year. Considering a beach fish along the Cockburn coastline and also considering jetties / groynes as far as Rockingham / Point Peron.
I have had luck down before, but its not somewhere we fish that often, so if there is anyone who is quite familiar with the area's fishing any tips and tricks would be appreciated highly.
I am very eager to find spots along this way where I can possibly get Squid and Skippy (my favourites), but I'm happy catching anything at the end of the day :)
As for bait, I have Mulies, Squid and Prawns - and I am considering purchasing a few other baits too for good measure, as I have heard that Whitebait / Bluebait are effective down that way for Tailor and Skippy.
Cheers.

After lots of internal debat and tossing up what to go for I got a pretty good price and went for this unit networked to my vessel view 7 display.....have the sounder hooked into a 600w chirp TM mount transducer....I'm hopeful I've ended up with a pretty good set up.....please don't be too harsh if you think I've ended up with shite!!!! I think that'd do me in
Possibly a free day day out in the offering to anyone familiar with and willing to show me a few tricks and some tutorage on using this unit......

MICROWAVE OVEN - CIRCUIT BREAKER
Submitted by Septimus on Thu, 2015-01-01 12:34Does anyone have any idea what size circuit breaker is required for a microwave oven (assume 850 watts) running off a Victron inverter?
There is power to oven (front panel lights up), however, as soon as it starts heating (big draw 5 to 10 secs after start
) the circuit breaker trips out.
Any help would be appreciated?

Electronic deadman ?
Submitted by ChrisG on Wed, 2014-12-31 16:37wondering if anyone has any feedback about electronic motor deadman / lanyards?
simplest I can find is autotether sold by a few australian suppliers and costs about $300
this one doesn't need to be wired in to the throttle or boat power supply as it appears to be battery powered and when in use just clips in where the normal red cord lanyard would normally clip, then you put the proximity device in your pocket.....if you fall over board the clip either falls away from the throttle or clicks the deadman toggle to off (depending on the type of throttle set up).
Video on the web site.
i have just re-powered with a new merc 4 Stoke and although I don't think I've ever come close to falling overboard when fishing solo (and watching the boat power off into the horizon without me) there is always a first time I suppose, plus now I take the kids out I'd hate to fall in leaving them in a boat headed for South Africa all alone!
as I said, interested to hear pros and cons if anyone has used or looked into them or an alternate brand....I particularly like the idea of not having to wire anything aftermarket into the throttle or boat electrics and risk it failing when out wide and leaving me bobbing around looking for a tow....

Right of Way in Channels
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Wed, 2014-12-31 15:15I am new to boating so can anyone help me out with this one. I was coming out of the Serpentine River (green arrow) in a small dinghy and another guy was coming out of the Murray River (red arrow) in a much larger boat. As I'm coming up sitting hard on the right shoulder of the channel he moves right in front of me and cuts me off so I had to stop coz I didn't want to risk running aground on the flats. As he starts turning left out to the inlet, I go to ovetake him on the left and he tells me he's got a line in the water, turns out he was trolling at the same time and I have to wait for him to reel his line in.
Is it my responsibility to give way to the larger boat even though I am heading in a straight line?

Can you win Metro Demersal Fishing Bingo?
Submitted by ricey on Wed, 2014-12-31 06:52Yesterday had a personal great day on species caught Metro, caugth legal sized Dhufish, Pink Snapper, Red Snapper, Baldchin Groper and Breaksea Cod in the first 3 hours, and thought that is a great species range for Metro demersal fishng.
So I am putting out the New Years Challenge to all you fishers, to try and catch the Big 5 and win Demersal Bingo too in 2015? The challenge is in one trip, but the less ambitious out there might try and do it in the year, Post your name below the next time you BINGO the big 5. Of course these are the vulnerable 5, and fish should be brought up slowly, handled gently and release weights used.
For the record I also added a swallow tail and a queen snapper and a few other reefies, but the challenge is for the 5.
tight lines in 2015, may the winds be low and the hopes high, Happy New Years to you all.

Visitor Catches some of WA's Finest Table Fare from In-Close
Submitted by Mick C on Tue, 2014-12-30 18:42Have a good mate from over east (well he is a Seppo that moved here so it is really a long way east) visiting at the moment. He is another one that gets my photos on a regular basis so was keen for me to take him out and show him the wonderful WA waters. With the weather being good today we headed out from Hillarys around 5.15am – still a little late for the pinkies and I am cursing my laziness. Even at that time the ramp action was really starting to hot up.
Off to familiar ground, “secret burley – well not that secret you just need the gear and time to make it”, “secret rigs” and “secret baits” and we had a very nice little session. Conditions were good excepting when the NE came up against the SW swell so we has the sea in competition with the swell – quite lumpy. 5 nice big King George, a couple of Blackass (including one over a kg) and lots of “undesirables” to keep us entertained. It’s nice when a visitor gets a lot of fish.
Pulled the pots before the SW wind came up and although we are still getting lots of berried females, we did get a couple of keepers. The photo of my mate with 2kg+ cray (tar spot that went straight back) is a classic. We could bait the pots up again with all the undesirables captured over the morning.
Got back to the ramp and it was bedlam again. As opposed to Saturday morning, everyone there seemed very capable and although there was a massive queue we cleared in less than half an hour. This was even with Sea Rescue bringing in a boat through it all. I am not sure what the difference between today and Saturday was?
KG, Breaksea and crays – it doesn’t get much better than that. They are the top of the better half’s “go and get them” list, and my mate and his wife get to sample some of the best that WA can deliver. All this from in close as well – got to love Perth Metro near shore.

Fish wings are the bomb!!
Submitted by clogwog on Tue, 2014-12-30 16:57Just devoured two sets of fish wings of a couple of breaksea cod freshly caught this morning,
just fryed them in butter added some garlic, parsley, chives and basil and mate they tasted good.
I never bothered with wings in the past but gotta say they take some beating.
weather forecast today was a little out, swell seemed to be rising 1.5 to 2 metre and only had
a short period of little wind, still a good day on the water, ended up with some good fish, those
dhuies are hard to find. how did others go?

Dunsborough Shallow Water
Submitted by Pezdog on Tue, 2014-12-30 11:57Hi all
Just recently got a little tinny and am looking to get into some shallow water fishing off Dunsborough. Obviously can't go far so whiting, squid etc would be target species.
Is it best to try the weed beds and sand patches in the bay or not really worthwhile and better to wait for a calm day and head around near the southern beaches?
Been out in the bay and it seems really flat and shallow for miles. Is there any structure about close in or more of the same?
Cheers
