Almost Exxy Trip
Submitted by JohnF on Fri, 2020-07-31 15:13After the Eagles/Collingwood footy match on Sunday, a few of the Exxy 2000 boys got on the piss, which resulted in a spur of the moment Exxy trip being planned for Wednesday......2 days time......more of a wet dream...
Two boats, my 235 Whaler and Troys 235 Whaler (aka "The Mule").....
Anyhow, we got as far as Jurien, and decided it Exxy was too far given the Exmouth forecast update not as good as we were hoping. So stopped and fished Jurien on Wednesday. It blew its arse off in the morning, but still got our bag of baldies but it was hard work in the slop.
After a few beers that night in Jurien, we reflected on being battered by the easterly and the forecast for Thursday was lookng similar, so we decied a sleep in and bacon and eggs breaky and head home early was better for us weak pricks.......a 3 days Exxy trip turned into a 1 day Jurien trip......getting old......
After seeing the ocean at 11 am, we ended up chucking the boats back in the water on the way home, did not even take the oversie signs off the boat... just in time for the southerly buster.....bugger. But man did we hit a hot dhuie bite!
After being busted off by 3 big fish that felt like serious dhuies, we upgraded rigs and Bodie landed a nice dhu whioch we dropped on the deck and we both dropped straigt back in, Bodie hooked up straight away and I loaded up on a nice double header. As we were busy sorting out the release weight for the healthiest 2 dhuies, Troy swung "The Mule" in on our drift and they both hooked up, landing another 2 nice dhuies. 10 minutes of madness.
Great end to a short "Exxy" trip!
4 dhuies on deck on my Whaler.....wheres the release weight!!!

Troy and Daz on "the Mule", Daz hooked up, Troy had already landed his.

Thanks in advance

bent sreet
Submitted by piscetor on Thu, 2020-07-30 22:57I am trying to get the council to deliniate the footpath/cycle path at the bent street boat ramp. I hassled them for better lighttting and the y put up a couple of flood lights. I think the path needs some barrier put up as i beleive that it is a potential accident waiting to happen. It will only take someones young kid on a bike or running unsupervised to get in the path of a trailer being reveres down the ramp and it will be a serious accident. You cannot watch all areas as your reveresing your trailer. I know that there has been no accidents yet but there has been some close calls. get ono the council with enough pressure and it might get resolved. Send them an email. cheers

repower from stern drive to outboards
Submitted by wez0062 on Tue, 2020-07-28 06:55Hi guys,
just wondering / chasing some advise from anyone who may have repowered their boats from inboards / stern drives to having a pod attached & new outboards.
I am working on a plan to purchase a 26 - 28ft boat & removing the engines & replacing them with twin outboards.
I would just like some in fo from those that have done it with regards to
-- approx costs of engine removal
-- cost of pods, including engineers reports - or are they included / done by the fabricator of the pods
-- any pitfalls to watchout for
thanks in advance, it would be much appreciated
regards Wez

Anyone setup temporary electric reel andersons?
Submitted by black gen on Mon, 2020-07-27 08:06After another trip in the books up north, we have been thinking about how we can better connect our reels.
Currently, we have 3 small motorcycle batteries which we sit in the side pockets and connect to each battery individualy, this has worked well for 5 years and we are simply thinking the process can be improved.
Mounting permanant andersons to the side of the boat is not an option, we do get some water spray over the side and having them sit out int he elements all year is not ideal and not something i want to do.
Have used anderson previously on one of the small betrries, but it built up resistance within the lead, i think due to water running over the connections perhaps.....as told to me by a reputable perth tackle shop which was on south street and sponsored this site before closing.
My thoughts were 1 full size battery in a box up the front, run a big lead down the side of the boat, and run my 3 reels off that lead, perhaps splice in 3 outlets so we can all connect and disconnect with ease.
It works in my head but would be keen to hear how others may have made this type of solution work.
Any tips woudl be handy.
Cheers

Anchoring in shallow water in small swell conditions.
Submitted by cruzy111 on Sat, 2020-07-25 13:36Just wanting to give new boaties some good info or those new to anchoring in shallower water when there is a bit of swell around. After watching a nice plate alloy go over the falls on a double head high wave the other day on a seemingly small swell day up here in exmouth I think a little bit of knowledge of swell is a must. No one on board and no one hurt but a big repair bill. This guy was an experienced boater as well. Anyone who surfs knows the two hour rule. At least once every two hours there is going to be a wave or set which will be minimum double the size of the average swell height. Copping a six foot set on the head on a three foot day is just about a certainty when surfing up here . So fishing or anchoring in shallower water you need to factor this in to what you are doing. Ive had some near misses and have had my tinny swamped a couple of times at local surf breaks. Luckily never overturned. Just sitting somewhere for 10 minutes and then thinking it is ok to anchor is not enough particularly in water depths of less than 10m anything less than 6m and you are asking for trouble. You need to be vigilant in keeping an eye on the swells in shallower water and I even have a knife up the front of my boat to cut the anchor rope if need be to get out quickly.

Back from Kalbari:
Submitted by Moking on Sat, 2020-07-25 09:29Geez it's really busy up there- All Caravan Parks are fully booked, turning away caravans who haven't booked a site.
Witness a few happenings: Two boats came to a mishap coming thru the rivermouth crossing.
Both boats ended up washed up onto the reef/rocks. Lucky all people escaped with a few scratches. Boats had to be dragged off reef by Sea Rescue.
: Drove out to the new Kalbarri Skywalk- well worth a visit, very well done. New road out there is brillant. Witnessed the first illegal base jumper from the Skywalk. Scared the shit out of us as he jumped, shook the walking platform. Balls of steel or just stupid!
Tangles was flatout with the Fishing Charters and Whale Watch- no shortage of money being spent up there.
Great few days away- still heaps of caravans and boats heading up on our drive back.

Solid Sunday Session
Submitted by McGuffin on Wed, 2020-07-22 06:22
G’day Crew, I’ve been a long time reader of the forum but not much of a contributor, mostly dhu to the fact I’ve never really had a solid fish to post about. Don’t get me wrong, I do alright, I get my fish just nothing amazing. All changed last Sunday.
After a while without getting out on the boat I was having a chat with a mate last Saturday, when we decided the weather was looking good, so we should do it. I’ve been looking at some charts and had picked a bunch of spots I’d never been to before and was keen to give them a look and see what the ground actually looked like. So it was decided, I’d pick him up and leave from Rocko at 7am and get a decent day of fishing in, while checking for some new ground.
As usual with us, a bit of dcking around takes place and we get away just after the planned time, but on the way to the first mark sound over some ground and spend the next 30 minutes fishing that spot for a couple of small pinkys, not the target, time to move on. Anyway we finally get to the first mark and start sounding it out, it doesn’t really light the sounder up, but good enough to have a drop, so we turn around to start setting up on it. As we turn the sounder does light up a bit, so I chuck a waypoint in (pt 97) and head back to the first bit of ground about 50m away and have a drop. We do alright, pick up a good pinky (72cm). A few more drifts and I’m keen to move on and see what else is around, when old mate shacked81, says “lets go have a drop on 97 before we move on, I’ve got a feeling about that”, no worries. First drift we pick up a undersize dhu which gets shacked frothin so we head around for our second.
This is where it gets fun, straight away shacked calls “I’m on” which gets me excited as I haven’t even got a line in the water on this drift yet. Quickly drop it down while shacked is having a good tussle, and straight away, Bang, I’m on. Whatever I have on here is giving me grief and giving the little TLD15 a bit of a workout. Anyway as I’m battling this fish I turn around to see shacked boating a solid 80cm Dhu. Happy days. Before too long my fish is near the surface (I’d been calling it for a dhu) but as a start to see colour I get my doubts, too big. 30 seconds later its on the surface and with lots of shouting and high fiving it’s the biggest freaking dhu I’ve ever caught. A freaking horse. Job done. We called it a day and went home. No need to keep fishing after boating a horse like that. A solid 105cm job. Certainly, a PB for me.

Hillary's Boat Harbour (Marina)
Submitted by Springboks7 on Tue, 2020-07-21 19:53Hi, I am relatively new to the Hillary's area and am looking for some tips (bait, rigs, location, rods, reels etc...) for landbased fishing in Hillary's Boat Harbour (Marina) either inside the harbour or off the rock walls. I heard that bream, tailor, baby snapper, whiting are all fish that are caught by the locals there and would like to know where in the harbour and how.
Cheers

FISH SKELETON FOR RESEARCH WORK
Submitted by ErikHimmel12 on Mon, 2020-07-20 19:00The Department of Fisheries in south west Australia is looking to collect fish skeleton for important fisheries research. Fishers who participate and provide the particulars of their catch including contact details, when and approximately where the fish were caught will go into a prize draw for a heap of great fishing related-prizes including a fabulous week-long charter fishing trip to the Montebello Islands, courtesy of Montebello Island Charters.
Kim, work for Department of Fisheries, is on hunt of fish skeleton for the research work. She said that she’ll come and collect their frames from anywhere in the coastal South-west. She informed that the species’ frames the Department requires in the South West include dhufish, pink snapper, herring, tailor, whiting (all species) and garfish.
Research scientists collect a lot of important information from fish frames including the length, sex and reproductive stage, and age of the fish. This is all vital data to help manage WA’s prized fish stocks better and ensure there’s fish for the future.

Jigging Rod recommendation
Submitted by pakulacockroach on Sun, 2020-07-19 21:13Any jigging gurus like to offer their knowledge on a rod choice please?
Looking for a rod to match a Talica 10 with PE4. Main use will be northern demersal fishing using mainly bottom baits, with a small amount of vertical jigging. Don't like parabolic action. Budget around $400.
Narrowed it down to 2 at the moment with out the luxury to view first. Tossing up between Oceans Legacy Adrenaline PE3-6, or Temple Reef Rampage PE3-6.
Any other suggestions or which way to lean would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
