New to Perth - Need fishing spots
Submitted by jonnomes on Sun, 2011-05-01 20:55Hey there. I am new to perth and have mainly only done river fishing on the murray. I am wanting to do some sea fishing, but i do not have a boat. Just wondering what the best spots are for good eating fish. Also what types of jigs should be used or bait fishing. Love going for squid. Am willing to travel around 45 minutes to an hour from Forrestfield to get a good catch. Have tried woodies on the short rock wall and the end of the car park as i was told this was good but did not have much luck. Possibly due to my setup of rigs. Rig setups would also be a great help.
Thanks all,
Help (Rod Tube Needed Urgently)
Submitted by hit n run on Sun, 2011-05-01 19:38Gday Guys & Girls,
Ive got a big favour to ask...
Im heading up to Exmouth on Friday the 6th May 2011 and usually drive but this time Im flying and I cant get all my rods to fit in my 6 inch PVC Rod Tube.
I was hoping someone would be interested in selling me theirs or even better lending it to me for 2 weeks.
I live NOR but would be happy to drive to collect.
I would prefer a Carmate Rodtube or a Sportube Guide Case but not fussy as long as it holds 10 rods for my Monte Bellow trip.
If anyone could help me out I would appreciate It.
Thanks SamC for offering me yours buddy but you need it for the following week :)
Cheers

Another Good Day off Cape Nato
Submitted by Seaquest on Sun, 2011-05-01 18:37With town getting back to normal after the easter break and the weather looking great I decided to head out for a fish.
Decided to head straight to a spot that has been producing some good fish. First drop resulted in a solid dhuy for my mate on a fresh squid head and a smaller dhuy for myself on a SP. Mine released itself boat side and swam back down.
Next drift my mate decided to give an old school hand line a go and I sent down an 11 inch McArthy SP in the hope of something bigger. As soon as we hit the bottom we both were on. Troy had a battle on his hands with his fish ripping line out of his hands a few times. Mine felt really solid and was taken line off my PE2 outfit at a rate of knots. Troys was up first and ended up being a douple header of dhuys. First time he had used a hand line and what a result. Mine was still given me heaps. Just as I had the fish half way up my rod snapped. Managed to get the fish up with the snapped rod. Turned out to be a big sambo.
Decieded to have one more drift and drop a metal down which resulted in another nice dhuy for me that was quickly sent back home.
Was another great day out with not one other boat spotted out of the bay.

SCUBA question
Submitted by Oracle on Sun, 2011-05-01 18:33Hi all.
I'm off to Rotto on Wednesday with a few guys for a snorkel (they havent done it before - rotto that is) and I was thinking of a solo SCUBE for a possible cray or two seeing it's only going to be 3-5 meters.
I know all the buddy only rules and it has its dangers, but I figure that from 5 meters, I can head up at anytime even without the gear if need be. I'll be anchoring in 2-3 meters so depth isn't going to be the issue.
am I missing any major dangers in this depth? Hear of a few people solo diving in 10 meters. Is it jsut plain dumb or are the risks so reduced in 5 odd meters that you could surface without gear adn resuce it later or go straight up ikf needed?
Cheers

2 Fish 1 Lure
Submitted by Mitch300491 on Sun, 2011-05-01 18:08But in this case... the worst one ever...

Went down to the usual spot again today. Good conditions but.... tons of blowies. Literally. Tried out the new HRT lures, but could only get loads of blowies coming out the dark chasing it down.
I was fishing with bait for awhile, getting smashed by blowies over and over again, but i had seen in the water 4 nice sized Bream and knew they were around. At one point i was reeling up my bait (cause it had weed stuck to it) and 2 massive sized Bream, the biggest thing ive seen in the water before were following next to the bait (must of been atleast 50/45cm each). But unfortunately the blowies were hounding at the bait and the bream werent going for it :(
By the time i got my bait out there again they were gone. No luck this time either.

Woodies squidding
Submitted by danno on Sun, 2011-05-01 16:13Hey all
Went down to woodies again today to try and get some fresh squid for lunch. Got there about 7 and there was quite a few people around, two people where squidding and they got two before i had a cast. I cast my everegreen jig in the water and had a follow almost straight away, it took me three little flicks into the same area to get this squid, i got it in and it was about 18cm hood so the size had improved from the other night i was there. Any way that was all the action i sore for a while. I walked to the other side and hooked a nice squid. As i was winding it in it's friend followed it in and was keen to eat its bigger mate. I told my dad to cast the little white egixile jig at it and it didnt like the look over it??? that was a first as squid normaly love that jig. Any way the squid was lossing interest so i made the choice to pull the hooked squid out of the water and get my jig back in to try and keep it exited. My jig had ink all over the barbs so i didnt think i would get it but as soon as the jig started sinking i hooked it solidly. That was all the action from woodies so moved to another spot that brenz and i found one day by accident.
I got there and told my dad to cast into a lovely looking spot and he said nar ill walk up the rocks a bit so i cast into the spot instead. First cast got one only small but eating size still, next cast another one. Then i sore a smalller squid cruising around and got that as well. Antoher cast into the good spot and got another smaller one. At that stage my dad wasnt to happy lol. Anyway that was the end of the squidding day with no more seen or hooked. Ended up with 7 and a nice lunch. The winning jig was a 3.0 harimitsu green/red.
One thing though was that there was 4 people plus me squidding all with high quality gear but they were not letting there jigs work the way they are ment to so they werent catching anything. It was good to see more people getting into squidding around perth.
I have some pics but my computer is still brocken so i cant make them smaller, im going to upload some that ive downsized from the other days session.
Thanks for reading.

Advice for first coral bay trip
Submitted by Versus on Sun, 2011-05-01 12:18few questions but bear with me!
heading to coral bay in june for the first time, just after some general tackle advice as i've only ever fished the metro and down south(shorebased) area. my brother will be bringing his dinghy so although we cant go too far out should be able to get onto some larger fish. my problem is ive only got a 6ft bream rod or my 12ft beach rod. ive basically never fished for larger species so i dont know where to start when it comes to getting a new setup- any advice on a basic rod/reel/line combo (preferably as cheap- but reliable- as possible)?
Also im not completely up to date on the different braid vs mono rigs etc (i wont ask here), there is books on these in most tackles stores but right?
lastly, ill probly stock up on some metal slices, HB's and soft plastics, but does anyone have a 'dynamite' rig they wish to share?
cheers vince

Just moved to Gero
Submitted by Ringy35 on Sun, 2011-05-01 11:35G'day all.
I have just moved to Geraldton due to work commitments and was wondering if anyone could give me any hot tips as to where to go for a land based fish untill i get a little boat. im pickin up a new 4wd next week as the old 40 series doesnt really like the great open roads!!! so beach access will not be a problem. if anyone has a road atlas and give some close enough directions it would be much appretiated.

Line choice for bream in the swan?
Submitted by Just1morecast on Sun, 2011-05-01 10:59Seeing a few people getting into some great bream latley and was wondering how i should go about it. I used to fish for them alot as a kid with soft placcys and did well but now with the new blade type lures out im keen to try them. Ive youtubed the technique which im sure i could suss out. Just a question on what line to use, currently 8lb braid on my 2500 stradic and im not sure if its too high. Should i be going for something smaller?
Also leader what do you use and do you tie the leader straight to the blade or to a tine clip swivel?
Cheers

FAD's on Thursday
Submitted by Mulie on Sun, 2011-05-01 10:13I'm heading out to one of the FAD's for the first time on Thursday (if the forecast stays the same). Does any one have any tips on lures etc and which one is closest in. I'm going in my 20ft Bertram/Caribbean that holds 120L of fuel powered by a 150hp Yamaha. I have just had the boat refurbed since buying it last year (thanks to Allan at Boat Fix in Balcatta and Maz and the people at Allboat in Kingsley). If any one else has plans to go out there on Thursday from Hillarys/Ocean Reef, let me know if you're keen to make a convoy.

What rod for TD SOL 2500???
Submitted by mosley2008 on Sun, 2011-05-01 09:24Hi guys, just wanted to get some suggestions for a rod to match with my new TD sol 2500?
Just want to be able to flick light plastics and hard body lures for mainly river fishing, some action off the moles occasionally.
Got 6lb fireline loaded up and ready to get tested out but cant think of a new rod to match it with.
I should know this as I used to work at Bluewater Myaree but that was a few years ago and I have dropped out of the loop since then.
Could someone update me on what rod would be best suited please??
Cheers !!!!!!

Advice on overhead rod please
Submitted by Quobbarockhopper on Sat, 2011-04-30 08:12Have just bought a Tiagra WLRSA and am after some advice on a rod to suit it… length/ weight/rollered-unrollered….?
Firstly, 24 or 37 kg? I know everyone will start screaming overkill and “too heavy to handle standing up against something big”… and while Im pretty fit and still young enough, I know it would be too much, but wouldnt be reassuring to know you’ve got a bit more of a “margin of error” should that really big one come along one day and the 50 holds more than enough 80lb for capacity not to be a factor…
I usually a strong advocate of going lighter rather than heavier in almost everything, but in this case, ive already got another setup with 24kg braid (live fibre stroker and tld30 2 speed), and also use 80lb on a dogfight as another so figure maybe go for that to finish of the trolling setup
Also, whatever I decide to go- are rollers really worthwhile? I was leaning towards getting a fully rollered one, easpecially if I go 37kg, so what should I look for in them?
Finally, can anyone recommend a good overhead rollered rod of either weight? Looking for something preferably with a really soft action but still have enough grunt in the butt to coax the big ones up?
Sorry, I know that’s a lot of questions! Cheers in advance for any help!!!

Albany Dolphinfish
Submitted by Nauti Buoy on Sat, 2011-04-30 07:55When i was in Bremer Bay over Easter we ran into a couple of fisheries officers. They told us that on Easter Monday a bloke caught a dolphinfish, a tuna, and a salmon on the same troll around the back of one of the islands. The guy apparently didn't know what he had caught!
Nice trifecta for the south-coast. Water temp was 23 degrees off Bremer

Saltiga 6500 or Stella 20000 unsure what I should get...
Submitted by Chris fish on Fri, 2011-04-29 14:52Hey guys I'm looking at getting a new outfit that I will use for chasing blue grouper, sambos and yellow tail kings from the rocks down south I want to run 80 or 100lb braid and will be getting a pe 6-8 rod about 8ft long. I've fished for them before but most hookups last only seconds and leave me wonderng what the hell happened so it's time for a gear upgrade just after some input on both of those reel models

Mulloway?!?!
Submitted by Damage82 on Fri, 2011-04-29 14:16Hi all,
New to this site but love to fish. Based in the Bunbury area, but I do have a few questions to you guys out there?
Been chasing mulloway the last couple of months weather permitting. Now with not much luck at all. Got one little soapie while trying to get some live bait. Do they have a preferred season to bite in or is it just pot luck?
Love to hear your comments.
