Karratha Bait ball
Submitted by Bodie on Mon, 2009-08-17 19:17Heard a rumour there is a bait ball of damiper / Karratha thats 6 - 8 times the size of a football oval.
Apparently sails and marlin everywhere??
A mate of mine up there called me last night, they caught i think 6 sails in a short period of time. Boats everywhere chasing them?
anyone seen it?

What to fish for tomorrow?
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Mon, 2009-08-17 16:36I'm needing some inspiration on what to fish for tomorrow. I will be heading off Tantas doing a solo mission, but just unsure what to target. You guys got any ideas to help me out as I'm in a bit of a lull at the moment? Saw a monster trout this arvo that just sat there looking at me and I couldn't shoot him, I've lost the will to kill and need it back!
Morning
Light and variable winds with smooth seas. Small long period swell.
Seas: SW 1.1 meters at 12 sec.
Winds: ESE 4 to 5 knots
Afternoon
Light winds with a slight chop. Small long period swell.
Seas: SW 1 meters at 12 seconds
Winds: W 7 to 9 knots

Low profile baitcaster for barra fishing?
Submitted by HuggyB on Mon, 2009-08-17 13:57Go ahead and recommend me a few. Most of my searching points towards the Curado at this stage. I'd prefer a low profile b/c, I have a daiwa luna for my "barrel" b/c - something that wont be taxing on you to cast all day.
Cheers!

The guy wants about $900 for the pair.

Tight Braid V Set bottom line
Submitted by Blank Cheque on Mon, 2009-08-17 07:05We were fishing in depth of just over 100mts when the reel went off. Unable to retrieve the third line in before it were too late we road it out and left it out there in the deep. After the fish was brought to the surface it was obvious that it had entangled the other line and cut through it without any noise coming from the reel with a firm but not tight set drag. So does the tight line generally cut through the loose line or is the tight line the one that is sacrificed? I would have thought the tight line would be the first to go. Have others experienced this?

Uncle Stu's amazing catch
Submitted by Colin Hay on Mon, 2009-08-17 07:00
Uncle Stu, Sherbs and I decided to brave the elements yesterday morning and to try out one of our favourite metro landbased spots.

We arrived before dawn to find a blustery south wester, combined with pretty sizeable waves, had turned our spot into a washing machine.
Hoping the fish would still be there we went at it and soon found that conditions made for pretty difficult fishing in the reefy area we were fishing. Needless to say, we lost a hell of a lot of rigs between us.
A few hours in, Stu hooked something and soon had it back on the beach. To our surprise, it was a massive collection of Sherb's rigs. Now that is a good fishing friend for you.
Stu also caught this nice Tarwhine and a few other small fish.

I managed to test out my rebuilt Moonraker (courtesy of Mako Magic) and was pretty happy to find that it was almost as good as new.

Final count, reef (about 100 rigs), Stu (a couple of Tarwhine and a whiting), Sherbs (nil), Colin (nil).

I am heading down to Balla Balla from Port Hedland in a few weeks time for 2 days fishing with a mate from the Eastern States...I have promised him the world in terms of fishing. Has anyone fished there lately & how did they go, and can anybody give me some tips on what to chase and where (mud maps...whatever would be great). We will be in a 4.3m f/glass cent console.
I look forward to your help.
Cheers!...promise to post some pics

Submitted by adamkk on Sat, 2009-08-15 20:19Hi everyone,I am heading up to Exmouth next week and i would like to know if any one could tell me where the Oysters are.I am told that this is where GTs hang out aswell as at the Naval Jetty.I have been to several tackle shops today and three different guys gave me three different maps (hand drawn) and none of them are even close to each other.
I would really appreciate the right directions on how to get there or any other spots worth trying.

Good job
Submitted by 7739ian on Sat, 2009-08-15 19:24I have seen just the dream job for some of you here in the South West - Fisheries Officers wanted. I must admit i was online downloading the criteria in a flash - moneys ok, interesting and a pretty good way to turn your interests into a career. I was running hot until i got to the 10m dive - unfortunately no one makes a 200kg weightbelt that would get me down there - dodgy ears and a bit ancient - 10 years younger and i would be right in there. Worth a look in my book.

Big market for 'bait' fish
Submitted by Colin Hay on Fri, 2009-08-14 11:53The New South Wales far south coast fishing industry has found a big market for a species previously considered useful only as bait.
The Eden Fish Co-operative is sending pilchards to multi-cultural markets in the capital cities and is expected to earn a half a million dollars annually.
The Co-op's manager, Glenn Richardson, says the new market is helping the industry recover after a Federal Government restructure.
"They are competitively priced and they're certainly a lot more lucrative than the bait market," he said.
"We get $3 or $4 a kilo for something that's hard to imagine eating.
"They are very popular in Sydney and Melbourne."

Jigging and Popping reel
Submitted by HuggyB on Thu, 2009-08-13 17:18I guess my dilema is can a reel adequately do both for a part-time popper like myself? I dont really want to shell out $1500 on a dogfight for example and find that its a bit of a one trick pony (ie only really any good for popping, but average for jigging).
Then secondly its obviously choice: Stella or Saltiga? I see many of the Pilbara guys have Stella's rather than Saltiga's for popping, is there any reason why? Conversley, with jigging (sambo) it seems to be split 50-50 between the 2.
I have a modified Spheros 14000FA currently thats is/has been doing the job, but I'd like to step it up to the nex level. My inital thought was Stella 20000SW or Saltiga 6500 Expedition as an all-rounder?

far-out vs deep
Submitted by octopus on Wed, 2009-08-12 22:12Hey guys,
How far offshore do u have to go or what depth do you think is best when targeting Snapper, Dhufish or even better small Sambos?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
I just bought a small runabout (no epirb yet so i have to stay in the exclusion zone) and after goin out about 10 times in up to 22m of water I havent caught anything bigger than a 1 kg skippy. Im looking for lumps using my fishfinder, burleying, using deadbaits/ livebaits and still no real luck.

Surf popper tip
Submitted by Colin Hay on Wed, 2009-08-12 21:16If anyone has read my article in Issue 3 of Fishwhrecked Reeltime and ends up trying surf poppers out, here is a bit of a tip.
I have found recently that spraying some scent on the feathers (such as Ultrabite), or dipping them in some Tuna oil, really creates extra interest from the fish.
Give it a try.

sounder advice
Submitted by injected80 on Wed, 2009-08-12 19:33gday crew was wondering if anyone has had any experience with humminbird matrix 15x gps combos or similar . i have only had the sounder in auto mode but now that the tinny conversion is finished i will hopefully be scouting out around five fathom bank and beyond on a more regular basis . for better arch returns do i adjust lower depth range ? use zoom ? structure id , whiteline or grayscale ? does all this basically compact the information that is sent back to your screen therefore more accurate potential fish targets ?. any help / advice would be huuugely appreciated cheers deano.

Need a new rod
Submitted by Dale on Wed, 2009-08-12 18:37Just got my Okuma VSYSTEM V 55 reel in the mail and I'm putting 10kg / 20lb fireline or similar on it. Want to use it for soft plastics for pinkies n stuff, I've got a Starlo Stix Tournament Pro 701M with 14lb fireline for soft plastics already that works quite nicely but I want something a bit beefier for this new reel. I've been looking at a Nitro Godzilla Spin 7' so that's kinda what I'm thinking. Any suggestions?
Cheers
