Dhufish and snapper fishermen wanted to help with research

Dhufish and snapper fishermen wanted to help with research

We invite you to participate in a FRDC funded project called "Development of an agent-based model to communicate the implications of recruitment variability of finfish to recreational fishers".

The computer model (known as an agent-based model) being developed in this study will help recreational fishers and fisheries scientists answer key questions about the biology and recreational fisheries for important WA demersal fish species.

We need your help by completing a short survey (approximately 20 mins) and then join in on a group discussion (approximately 1-2 hours). Both the survey and group discussion aims to capture fisher knowledge about the habitat preferences and movements between habitats of Dhufish and Snapper and how fishers use this knowledge when fishing.

When fully developed, users will be able to interact with the program as a virtual "fisher" who can make decisions such as when, where and how long to fish, given various information, e.g. weather, fuel prices, catch rates etc.

Recfishwest will be holding a workshop evening with interested dhufish and snapper fishers, Thursday 10th September, 5:30pm at the Recfishwest Offices, Watermans Bay Marine Centre, West Coast Drive, (opposite Elvire Street), Waterman.

The workshop will involve a research presentation from Dr Alex Hesp, Murdoch University on research at the Centre for Fish and Fisheries Research relevant to recreational fishers.

Please RSVP your interest in attending to

pinky at asi

i was at asi this morning and saw a 8 kilo pinky cought on a mulie and squid. just wanted to see if anyone else caught or heard of any being caught so i can understand if it was a good morning or just a fluke.  i went fishing this morning because i thought the blows last night and the high tide in the morning might go well for snapper.   not asking for spots, just the success rate and what they were taking.  Thanks!

Sambo Season

I have a old fishing buddy from a previous life coming to visit from 16 Oct till 8 Nov.  Would like to get him into a few sambos.  When does the season start?

Sharks circle sick whale off Exmouth Coast

Sharks circle sick whale off Exmouth Coast

LISA CALAUTTI, The West Australian September 2 2009, 11.40am

Wildlife officers are monitoring a sick humpback whale stranded in a remote sanctuary zone in Exmouth.  Sharks are circling

the 10m whale which has been trapped in the Bundegi Sanctuary zone for the past few days.

A Department of Environment and Conservation spokeswoman said the whale is stuck in a difficult to reach spot, about 800m off shore.

It is in a very poor condition covered in blisters.

Fishermen see signs of slick off Kimberley

Fishermen see signs of slick off Kimberley
JANE HAMMOND, The West Australian September 2, 2009, 2:00 am

Professional fishermen off the Kimberley coast have reported sick and injured turtles and globules of yellow gunk in waters many nautical miles south of the West Atlas oil spill.

The part-owner of a fishing vessel working in the area, who did not want her name published, said reports were coming in from the vessel of a heavy chemical smell, globules of yellow gunk and wildlife coated in an oily sheen.

Oil has been spewing from the stricken West Atlas oil rig in the Timor Sea since August 21. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has been spraying dispersants on the oil in a bid to break up the toxic slick. Up to 500,000 litres of oil is estimated to be spilling into the ocean from the rig every day.

The part-owner said her fishing vessel had taken water samples for analysis and photos of the unusual oily gunk.

"The skipper has told me via the sat phone that the situation out there is very concerning," she said.

"A few days ago there was a film of oil as far as the eye could see and yellow globules in the water from the dispersant that was being sprayed.

"We have a colleague who fishes out of Darwin. He fishes the top end of the Kimberley. He was saying the same thing, they could smell and taste this chemical smell and he was seeing sick fish and turtles."

This morning Premier Colin Barnett said the State was making contingency plans to deal with the possibility of the slick reaching the WA coast.

He said the spill was a lesson for the Federal and State government to implement a quicker response to deal with such incidents because unlike the Mexican Gulf, offshore oil rigs around Australia were just kilometres away.

Gear storage @ home

I've been looking at tidying up my gear that seems to be strewn from one end of my house to the other. I have a couple of rod racks but they are full to the point of overflowing and I have nothing as such for storing my reels (14, soon to be 16, 17 if I have a fit of madness).

I'm lucky enough that I can donate an entire room just to fishing gear (rods, reels, tackle, fly vice, tying gear etc).

Can people post me up some pics of how they store all their gear at home. I have a few ideas, but I'd really love some creative inspiration!

Sounder / Plotter pairs

Hi all.

Just a quick one. I'm chasing a sounder / plotter matching pair.

The boss has given me about $1500 to donate towards one.

Does anyone know of anyone getting rid of one or has one they want to get rid of.

Or what I can get (and is worth getting) for around that price (new).

Any info would be greatly appriciated.

Cheers..................

Cleaning up after idiots.

Last night I went for a quick fish at Hillarys, and some idiot was so lazy that he had driven his 4WD onto the AQUA jetty.

He was too lazy to park it in the car park which is 5 steps away.

Then the lazy pr!ck drove off, and left a empty bait bag on the jetty.

Even if it wasn't his, he could of picked it up, or put it in the bin 20 steps away.

How do these idiots get through life???

trout season

open in 3 hours!

Anyone venturing south to chase trout this season??

I'll probably be heading down Thursday after work (leave around 3ish) to see whats about......

Hollow Core Braid

Has anyone used this stuff (particularly Jerry Brown or Izorline). I'm after opinions / thoughts etc etc......

Theoretically the stuff sounds phenomenal, but does that translate into reality?

2rocks

I was lucky enough to get out for a few hours today off 2rocks and saw a couple of whales about 40m off the back of the boat wich is a bit intimidating in a little tinny. We also boated 3 small dhuies 2 of wich were sucessfully realesed with a realease weight and the third one didn't swim off quick enough as a large cuttle fish came up and decide to eat it wasa very impresive sight and not what i imagined would have happened to the dhuie as we would have put it back down with the realease weight. The only keeper i got for the day was a king george whiting sorry guys no pic's

Utterly ridiculous

Took some friends from sydney for a fish this morning out the back of FFB having launched at Cockburn, had a great day after some generous berleying with plenty of fish boated and released. A stonka of a harlequin kept for tea and some massive bust off's on drift baited mulies, one definitely a snapper with the vibrating head shakes and one almost certainly a very very large sambo which nearly pulled the lady guest overboard with an unstoppable run.

What spoilt the whole day was the complete and utter mongrel who, on an ocean which was littered with just two boats, motored directly at us coming within 25 metres clearly pinging the spot we are anchored on, obviously saw the bottom lit up with fish and didn't just ping the spot he bloodywell dropped anchor within easy casting distance.  The guests on my boat thought the little red cross on my GPS was the same on everyones GPS and when I explained the realities, that those crosses were the result of many hours of exploration he wanted me to pull the pick and go and have a go at the mongrel ............bluntly I wasn't prepared to waste my breath abusing people with no ethics whatever.  If it was you (and I have a photo of the boat and it's extremely close proximity which I am tempted to post on here for all to see) then hopefully this might just prick your conscience, on second thoughts you probably dont have one

Sunday Rottnest

Woke up at 6 on sunday morning after getting to bed at 2 which wasnt to fun but knowing we would be at rotto soon enough got me out of bed. Met up with a mate from work at point peron boat ramp and headed out to the back of the 5's to see if we could burley some pinks considering it was still pretty early. Half an hour of burley and nothing so headed to rotto. Found some nice ground in the 40's on the way but nothing biting so continued to rotto. Got to west end around 8 and decided to burley for some kingys again no action so went for a bottom bash picked up 3 nice blackass one over a kilo and 2 undersize dhuies both on the bream gear and one on a 5in gulp jerk shad which is a first. Started heading back at about 1ish but some nice ground and plenty of whales had us hanging around till about 3. It had been a long day so started to head in again after about 5 mins cruising back seen heaps of birds diving so went over and checked it out we could see heaps of fish swimming along the surface with the top of their backs out of the water but couldnt get close enough to see what they were. We trolled around them for about 20 mins and threw baits at them but they just wernt interested my guess is they were tuna but you would think they would hit a bait if they were on the surface but ah well turned out a nice day and picked up around 15 squid in 20mins back in cockburn sound so no complaints :D

New Stradic C14 in Australia?

I see that Shimano are now marketing the new Stradic C14s in Australia. They are in 1000 and 2500 size.

Does anyone know what sort of money they are asking?

Fishermen missing off Coral Bay

Here's hoping they find the missing fishermen off Coral Bay safe and sound, if not a little cold and wet.  Let's hope for a good outcome.

Dinghy missing off Exmouth
The West Australian August 31, 2009, 6:52 am

Exmouth police and sea rescue volunteers have searched throughout the night for a boat with two people on board that went missing at Ningaloo Reef yesterday.

Witnesses reported seeing flares in the area shortly before 7pm and contacted the police.

Police said officers found a trailer on the beach and witnesses reported a 4m dinghy just outside the reef about 4pm with two people aboard.

Police and rescue volunteers are continuing the search for the vessel this morning.

OK For some

I buy the Sunday Times for the lotto numbers and so my other half can rubbish the ugly babies section. I DO NOT buy it for the fishing section as in my opinion having Glen Jakovich post a regular article is as credible as Chopper Reid's gardening tips. So yesterday it was raining and being bored i read his blurb - all in favour of Uncle Norman's rip off licensing fees. No problem for Jako - he gets paid a bomb to write this drivel plus all the other slings he gets for being an ex footy star - the rest of us don't.

anyone heading out tomorow ?

anyone heading out wide tomorow ?

A quiet day with free entertainment

Spent the day floating around the sound in search of pinkies..

No pinkies, a good feed of squid and free entertainment to top off the day, courtesy of the resident sound dolphin !

Panel beater(not fishing related)

chasing someone to give me a quote after a fender bender in the rain on friday. If anyone is or knows a panel man send me a pm i may be able to keep them i business if people keep trying to hit me like the last few days.It is like i have a target on meLaughingThe repair is for the front end of a standard 100 series white cruser i was chasing a few other little bit to get fixed as well.

unweighted baits??

I'm going to be getting out in the new boat scout around 5 fathom bank and the like. Its a new style of fishing for me so I'm still learning,

i've heard of people talking about unweigthed baits.

I was wondering how people attach their leaders to the main line? Swivel, or a favorite knot?

And how long would you make a leader for this application?

Any Other tips for this style of fishing would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Adam

how'd everyone go today??

hey

me and the missus went out from mindarie this morning

slow start but got onto some good ground in the end

not before getting stung on the foot by a bluey

bugger me. the pain ended up going to my bollox. ouch

after finding the ground , we set a drift and both got a dhuey on same drop so left em biting for next time. 2's enough

interestingly , she caught the better fish on drift bait where as i got smaller fish on paternoster with lumo squid.

got into a shark and a harlequin amongst other things

and to top it all off , figured something out about sounder.

happy days

fishing this weekend

any body have any luck landbased this weekend went to north mole twice and didnt get anything.Frown

Cure? Maybe not but so what?

As I promissed myself I headed up to Flatrock yesterday arvo for a fish. I met up with Sid and his dog and we toughed it out overnight. The conditions were somewhat unusual with a fair bit of loose weed hanging around the break. That made it an early break for the evening. One decent Tailor and a couple of herring was about all we could do. The morning saw pefect conditions but again, weed at the break and certainly no action as we would have expected. I did have one break-off on the big rig but nothing else to brag about I am afraid.

Thanks for the company Sid. I am sure both out dogs will sleep for a couple of days now.
