Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 2012-02-16 14:09For the last 2 years I've been working in conjunction with Dr Corey Wakefield (Reserch Scientist - Finfish) with Super Deep species!
What we've learnt so far is great but so much more to come which is exciting!
Here's some highlights from the video that was recorded from the Perth Canyon from the RV Naturaliste trips in March and November 2010!

Mahi Mahi II for sale?
Submitted by kirky79 on Thu, 2012-02-16 11:07Just flicking thru the Feb issue of tradeaboat and noticed Mahi Mahi II for sale. Anyone know if Bernie and crew are getting out of the business or just upgrading to a new rig?
Went out with them over new year break and had a great time and caught some quality fish. Be a shame if he is. Been around a while and certainly knows what he is upto!

Landbased help please
Submitted by AlwaysFishin on Thu, 2012-02-16 09:20Hi all,
As the seasonal shifting sands have filled up my favourite fishing hole at Trigg, I have been searching elsewhere for a summer landbased spot. I have spent hours on the beach from City Beach to Scarborough with no luck. I'm not asking for anyone secret spots, but can anyone please help me out a bit?

Casting lead pot.
Submitted by axl100 on Wed, 2012-02-15 11:42I said I would upload some images of my lead casting jig. Here are the pics. As you can see in the first pic the stand and the pot bolted to hinges. The cake tin in the back ground sits on the bits of round bar. In the second pic you can see were the burn is and that slides up and down the legs for what ever height you need. I just poured the molten lead straight into the casts, pretty easy. Knocked out 25kgs of sinkers in a couples of hours.

swan land based crabbing report
Submitted by Timmo on Wed, 2012-02-15 11:05Hi all
Haven't posted in a while and have got a heap of photos and reports banked up which i will put up soon (yeah im slack). However in the meen time went crabbing last night and was pulling a pot up and called it for a huge crab/s then the net starting flapping around and immediately thought another little ray but up comes a 40cm fat as flattie. Have caught some weird things in crab pots but a solid flatty mmmm tasty. Got 7 crabs in the end with some big blues hitting 17cm and a female which was 17.5cm huge mumma. Crabs still a bit hit and miss but starting to pick up from the last few weeks. THinking end of Feb start of March should start firing again.
Cheers
Tim

How much does a fish shrink??? (circa 1958)
Submitted by Browny on Tue, 2012-02-14 21:03Found this interesting table in a 2nd edition "The Anglers' Omnibus" by Roger Hungerford. (circa 1958 I think!)
How much does a fish shrink?
"How much does a fish lose through dehydration, loss of bodily water content, after being caught?
Men who have attempted to set up dehydration tables have found their task difficult , because the co-operation of many fishermen is needed.
But now the job has been done, and the honour of ferreting out the figures goes to an energetic and persevering Australian statitician.
So for those interested in settling fish-shrinkage arguments with something better than conjecture, following is an acurate chart, compiled under conditions as nearly average as possible."
Not sure just how accurate it is, but makes for interesting reading on weight loss after 6 hours, and 12 hours.
Cheers.
Browny.

Chasing Marlin, Yellowfin and Wahoo on Sunday - free spots available
Submitted by soupster51 on Tue, 2012-02-14 17:02I'm heading out on Sunday chasing Marlin, Yellowfin and Wahoo. Planning to stop in a special spot to jig for dogtooth and huge coral trout as well. Might even spend half an hour casting for big GTs if the wind is right. Spots open for three people. I'm supplying all the gear (jigs, lures, lunch, fuel, etc). All you have to do is meet me at the boat at 0600. The first three people to get in touch are in. Let me know if you're keen.

Ocean Reef Marina nearer to reality
Submitted by Colin Hay on Tue, 2012-02-14 13:59Ocean Reef Marina nearer to reality
Portfolio: Premier
- Premier participates in official MOU signing with City of Joondalup
- Proposed site incorporates existing Ocean Reef Boat Harbour
- State Govt encouraging infrastructure development to strengthen communities
The proposed marina will incorporate the existing Ocean Reef Boat Harbour and provide a permanent home to Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue Group.
“The State Government encourages development of infrastructure projects that strengthen the economic and social well being of communities,” Mr Barnett said.
“By developing this marina, the City of Joondalup will be helping provide a balance of residential, recreational, commercial and public amenities to service the community and to attract local and outside visitors.
“The marina will also become permanent home to the Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue Group which is one of the busiest in Western Australia, performing up to 300 rescues every year.”
The Premier said Ocean Reef MLA Albert Jacob, who attended the signing today, had been instrumental in bringing the planned project to its current stage.
“Albert Jacob campaigned at the 2008 State Election to push for redevelopment of the harbour into what will become Ocean Reef Marina and I congratulate him for his advocacy in this issue which is vital to progress in the northern suburbs,” he said.
The MoU agrees to a collaborative approach for the Ocean Reef Marina Project between the State Government and the City of Joondalup, in particular producing a structure plan to be developed by the city. A supporting business case will then facilitate the project’s progression.
Fact File
- Site incorporates Ocean Reef Boat Harbour, between Swanson Way and Resolute Way
- Proposed development footprint (about 91.5ha - 57.88 land, 33.61 reclaimed/marine)
- Approx. land tenure: State Govt 47 per cent; Water Corp 6 per cent; City of Joondalup 47 per cent

Help with Swan River Fishing Locations
Submitted by vitalida on Tue, 2012-02-14 12:35Hi all, this is my first post. I'm looking for yellowfin whiting, flathead and bream in the river. I'm a bit of a river novice but have caught (in the past) some good fish of all of these species down Pt Walter way. I'm not having any luck at all though. Can someone please help with where I should be trying for these fish? Any input would be really appreciated. Thanks for reading, David.

4 mile and 8 mile confusion
Submitted by Brad Y on Tue, 2012-02-14 08:23Where abouts are the 4 mile and 8 mile reefs in Geographe Bay measured from. Been looking on navionics and any general area that I find that looks like the 4 and 8 mile reefs are more like 5 and 6 nautical miles respectively. Am I getting the units confused between nautical and regular miles or are the names close but not quite 100% accurate?
