Exmouth...is it now the paradise lost for the amateurs??
Submitted by forbee4 on Wed, 2012-08-08 19:27I have just come back from Exmouth and I have to say i'm pretty dissapointed :(
I'm going to hit this one from two fronts...one tourist...one fishing...!!
Tourist: -
15 years ago I worked in the pilbara/kimberley (before this monster mining boom began!!;) and the region was in full growth back then....
Karratha/Headland established themselves as business centres because they represented the financial heart of WA.
Broome is a tourist precinct and the Palms, Mango trees and relaxing attitude is what makes it touristy and comfortable...
Dampier has an agricultural feel
Enter Exmouth..so much potential and so much a disappointment. I came here about 15 years ago ang nothing seems to have changed..
If Exmouth wants to grow as a town it needs to develop the tourist edge and lose it's lazy mentailty..It's miles behind..!..!
Fishing: -
We took a 9 m boat out way past the Muirons and came with what I would consider a shame..2 Macks, a remora (have never ever seen someone catch a remora but my cuz did) and one great leatherjacket.
The humpbacks were great but I didn't come here for something that big..!!
All in all pretty pissed off..
I guess i'm just an amature that just wanted to catch one decent fish and got hip and sholdered out of the contest by local knowledge..
I'm beginning to understand "local knowledge"...!!

quobba feb/march
Submitted by Gaffatron on Wed, 2012-08-08 11:13hey all,
thinking of doing a week quobba trip in feb/march from what i have read on here so far my best bet will be spinning or bottom bouncing, unless the easterly winds come to the party, do many ppl have luck with spinning from whistlers and getting macks/tuna? and are they around at that time of the year?
any info would be great, cheers!

Lowrance waypoint removal
Submitted by gib77 on Wed, 2012-08-08 08:47Hi just wondering if anyone can fill me in on process of backing up all your spots from your GPS. I have a Lowrance HDS8, I think I tried it once, and it seemed you needed a blank SD card. Put card in unit and export waypoints or something. Will that card then go into other units? I also tried to see spots on PC but it seemed you needed to download some lowrance software. I think I stumbled here to....
If anyone can tell rough easy steps it would be greatly appreciated..

Sea rescue issues, please read
Submitted by Tankisnowfishing on Wed, 2012-08-08 06:00Hi all
Just reading on the west.com.au that the volunteer sea rescue has lost their government risk cover insurance. Myself being a member of a different volunteer emergency service think this is ridiculous
. Hope they come up with a solution asthey have immediately halted use of all their moats unless it is a life threatening emergency.
Just shows how much red tape us volunteers have to deal with and I think Fesa need to take a long hard look at themselves.
Some of the changes are good, but to strip an emergency service of its insurance is silly. It shows why it is hard to retain members of such a volunteer group

Advice please
Submitted by joycey on Tue, 2012-08-07 23:17Hi guys,
Recently bought a 5.3m fibreglass cuddy and after a few trips out in the Sound, planning to head out to deeper water this Saturday.
Conditions look good so far, would you agree ?
Whilst I don't expect specific spots, I'd be grateful for some advice on an area to head to and sound around for some bottom fishing for snapper/dhui's.
Also any tips on rigs/bait/tactics ( drift or anchor ? ) much appreciated.
Cheers for any advice,
Joycey.

So, my reel came back from shimano..
Submitted by Jelle on Tue, 2012-08-07 19:232-3 weeks ago I dropped my 6month old stradic FJ in the water. It was only in for about 5 sec. I rinsed it with fresh water, put some of the oil in the maintenance port and there didn't seem to be any issue. Next day I picked it up and it wasn't as smooth any more. I put up a topic on this forum, to get some opinions on what to do.
Yewiefish offered to have a look, he opened it, put some oil where needed and mentioned he couldn't find any trace of salt in it, but the reel was still not smooth so I sent it to the service center. I got it back today with an invoice of 95$ (15 of which were freight back to me) I must say I was quite surprised.. that's about half the cost of a new reel! Apparently they replaced 3 bearings..
It's smooth as new again, but still I would have expected a call to let me know how much it would end up costing me to have it fixed..
Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned that it was dropped in the water and that somebody already had a look at it and they may have fixed it under warranty..
Not sure what I'm getting at with this post now.. guess I'd like to know if it's normal to pay this amount of money for a reel service - fix? Especially if Yewie couldn't find anything really wrong with it..

Chivers Mako 32
Submitted by gib77 on Tue, 2012-08-07 19:17Hi all just wondering if anyone has had any experience with a Chivers Mako 32. Just starting to research boats and looking at moving to more of a family boat next. Want the boat to enable good cabin for staying overnight at rotto, but also have a good back deck for fishing. The Fraser 31, and Bertram 28 seem like a good option too. Would love to hear any comments from people who have had any experience with these size vessels for offshore fishing.

HELP - Joining Furuno 585 with Furuno GPS1650
Submitted by DBZ on Tue, 2012-08-07 15:10I've just ordered a cord to join my 585 with an older Furuno GPS1650 so that i can mark ground more accurately by using the 585 'mark' button.
I was expecting an easy 'plug one end into 585 and other end into GPS' situation but have received a cord with one pluggable end and the other cut off with open ended wires. (see pic)
I havent been down to the boat to look at where these wires could be fitted yet but didnt want to get down there and not know how to get it on. It didnt come with any instructions so any help/tips/instructions from anyone who has fitted this previously would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

6 wk trip from Perth-Darwin, boat rod/location advice needed..
Submitted by BigSpinna on Tue, 2012-08-07 11:59Hey guys,
As title lets on the missus and i will be doing a 6 week trip from Perth up to Darwin as our honeymoon taking in such sights as Exxy, Broome, Cape Leveque and doing the gibbs river rd. Will be taking the patrol loaded up, sleeping in the rooftop tent and towing a 5m C/C ally. So basically fully self sufficient for up to 7 days at a time.
Really wanted some advice on what size boat rods and reels i should look at purchasing and how many? Have 2 rods i could use already a 5'6" wilson live fibre venom 450g jig stick (i know not designed for trolling) and a 7'6" FWA heavy popping rod. I only have one reel a stella which i switch between depending on what fishing im doing. What overhead reels and rods should i look at? Mainly for trolling up north for Marlin, mack, sailys, tuna etc
Also we have only been in WA for 1.5 yrs and havent really travelled much up the coast are there any locations or some favorite spots you guys love which we should take time to check out? That way i can start to plan and buy the required gear gradually before the trip. Wont leave until April 2014 so have time to accumulate some goodies :) Can't wait to get going!! Just bought our first home over here and dont plan on leaving, WA is amazing!
Apprieciate any info
Thanks a lot
Chris

newbie/
Submitted by Jimmyb on Tue, 2012-08-07 11:41howdy...been a member for while now but never formally introduced myself. Live in willetton so fish mainly out of freo. i recognise a few people using the site....seems to be plenty of great advice and experience shared...along with many strong opinions on some matters. must also say i enjoy friday funnys! Thought id share my most unique fishing experience
my old man bought me and my brothers a large spool of braid to load up our reels for our xmas fishing trip to busso. first trip out we found a nice lump that we marked and anchored up on. things started off pretty slow until a school of sambos showed up, my brother put his rod in the holder and raced around looking for a strong handline to get amongst the school. in the meantime we all watched his rod be lifted from the holder fly about 5 metres through the air and disappear to the bottom attached to this monster. he was not happy!! 3 days later fishing the same spot my same brother (after getting a new rod) wound his line up and saw that he had hooked my line (so he thought..because of the type of braid) chucked over the line.next drop the same thing happened and he told me to move to the front of the boat so we stop getting tangle...i replied that my line wasn't tangled around his. next drop again he hooks this line at which point i wind up my line to prove its not me.....im not tangled. My brother pulls up this braided line that he keeps hooking only to pull up his rod and reel that was pulled overboard 3 days earlier. to this day 10 years on the rod is sill used!!!!
Cheers Jim

overhead spool band
Submitted by turts on Tue, 2012-08-07 11:21hi guys
just wondering if there is any form of spool band for overhead reels? plenty on the market for spin reels, but cant find anything for overheads. obviously you cant wrap it around the spool without some sort of velcro connection or the likes. i find it a pain with my saltist 40LD to keep the wind-on tight on the spool when not in use. i usually tie the end off to the handle or similar
look forward to any input cheers in advance!

Eshed!!!
Submitted by Fishn104 on Tue, 2012-08-07 11:00Hi,
Went to eshed on Friday night with fresh scalies. Bout 20-25 of them. Started fishing bout 9.30-4.30 only to get smashed by crabs. All the scalies went to the crabs!! I have done this a few times at eshed to get the same result. If not crabs then eagle rays!! I don't mind a fight with an eagle ray once in while though. Can anyone tell me if they have the same result and those who have had great success at eshed, any pointers would be great! Cheers.

chasing large fish
Submitted by dan the man on Mon, 2012-08-06 22:34Hi everyone, I have only just signed up to fish wrecked and was wondering if i could possibly get some help to chase a proper fish! I have only just arrived from the uk about 3 months ago and am based in rockingham. Been fishing off kwinana beach and been catching plenty of whiting, mullet and garfish which has been good fun. However i hooked something huge which spooled me i couldnt stop the thing!!! all good fun though and now i have a serious case of trying to land a big fish which resulted so far in spending alot of money in tackle shop!!!
Anyway i was wondering if anyone could give me some info on how and where i could catch big mulloway, ray or shark it would be greatfully appreciated. I wouldnt mind even doing few nights or whatever with people as i am new to the area and would be good to meet some people. I would buy the beers obviously! lol any help is appreciated! many thanks

Any Tips for catching Saily's
Submitted by Braxi on Mon, 2012-08-06 15:03G'day,
Im not in the comp this weekend, stuck working through till midweek. Sounds like the good time of year to chase them though. I havent caught one yet. We had one come up under the boat and have a look at us when we were bottom bashing. And Ive seen some cruise under the wharf at work. Just never had the luck of hooking one. Are there any particular depths, trolling speeds, trolling ground (reefy or flat bottom), lures/skirt colours that are better to try? Ive kown a few people to hook them from floating a gardie/mulie out the back when drift fishing. Might try to get out thursday or friday while the winds not too bad. Its torture looking at the flat seas from work all day though and then getting to days off and it blowing up. Hope the calm seas hold on for a couple more days.
Cheers.
