Moon Phase Clock
Submitted by C.P on Sun, 2012-07-29 12:11Does any one know where I could buy a moon phase clock? I have seen a couple on the web but can't find anyone here who even knows what i'm talking about, let alone advise where I might find one. I would like to hang on on the wall in my study as it seems like a useful & novel instrument to me. I dont know why people are so baffled by my request. Presumably the hand would turn one revolution every 29 1/2 days or there abouts. maybe I'm wrong. Any way, any ideas?

Still Learning
Submitted by lawndered on Sun, 2012-07-29 12:05Went out yesterday with the family as usual and had a few drifts around the five fathom, a few weeks back managed to grab a dhui and a little mixed bag.
Yesterday was fairly quite for us and managed a couple of fish, one fish which we boated I was sure was a shite fish as in my mind it looked like a painted sweetlip that was in the forum earlier in the week.
The fish looked like it would be good eating, the camera wasnt on board and the mobile was swithched off, I wanted to take a photo so when I came home I could look up the fish and ID it.
I dont like to take something and kill it unless I know what it is and well I think it was a long tail perch, which according to fishwrecked fishapedia isnt to bad on the chew. BUGGER
Like I say it looked like a nice fish and all, I couldn't see a black mark on its ass and well being new to boating and the variety of fish you catch erred on the side of caution.
Also just wondering apart from the little fish ID guide from fisheries is there any other guide to help while your out there to ID fish, or is it just a live and learn thing. Experience over time>
Other than that a nice day on the water..

we are all on our own! message from the government regarding great whites
Submitted by snappermiles on Sun, 2012-07-29 06:45http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/you-are-all-on-your-own/story-e6frg12c-1226437673482
SWIMMERS should take more responsibility for keeping themselves safe from sharks, according to a Government report.
And authorities get annoyed that their efforts to educate the community often fall on deaf ears because people think they are "shark experts" when they're not.
For instance, the idea of a rogue shark that has developed a taste for human blood is unfounded.
A Department of Fisheries internal report gives a rare insight into the Government's opinions on the record spate of shark attacks off our coast.
Two weeks ago 24-year-old surfer Ben Linden became the fifth person to be killed by a shark in WA in 10 months when he was attacked off Wedge Island.
The deaths have prompted Fisheries to develop a campaign to ease fears among swimmers.
The Sunday Times obtained a report summarising a Fisheries workshop on campaign priorities.
Under the headline "Issues", it said: "Must focus on desire is for the public to have a realistic understanding of interaction with the marine environment, particularly in relation to sharks."
The document also said: "Irrespective of whether they are (or not), everyone thinks they are shark experts makes education difficult."
Fisheries Minister Norman Moore said the points raised during the workshop were not a "government position", but they were "not inconsistent with what Government is seeking to achieve through the community engagement strategy".
The report quotes data presented during the workshop by shark scientist Rory McAuley which said there had been 121 shark attacks in WA since 1893.
According to the Australian Shark Attack File, 62 per cent of these resulted in no injuries or minor injuries. Sixteen per cent of attacks were fatal.
Mr McAuley told the workshop that the "rogue shark" theory that the predators liked to prey on humans and had a taste for our meat was not supported by evidence.
It said victims of attacks were rarely eaten and that attack locations were separated by up to thousands of kilometres.
"Definition of a rogue shark includes two assumptions that there is a benefit to the shark in targeting humans and that these animals exhibit some level of residency," the report said.
"(This is) unsubstantiated opinion based on no evidence."
Mr McAuley told the workshop that data for assessing shark numbers, particularly great whites, in the state was "extremely limited".
Accurate analysis is complicated because scientists are unsure of the patterns of shark-population growth
HMM LETS JUST SAY ITS THERE FAULT SO WE DONT HAVE TO SPEND ANY MONEY FIXING THE PROBLEM!! typical bloody government

Submitted by Fossil on Sat, 2012-07-28 13:01Yes, again. A mate was out yesterday & found lots of dead fish through the maylands/ascott area. There's an online article in the Herald Sun if anyone is interested, yet another algal bloom apparently. This is the third one this year I believe. Things not looking good for the Swan.

opinions on 4 blade props
Submitted by fisho-ron on Fri, 2012-07-27 14:01hi guys
i have just tried a s/s mecury 4blade prop on my 200 etec which is on the back of a 655 southwind (did have a s/s 3blade reble) i was chasing a few more revs as the current prop wont let the engine rev to its max(loading up to much we assumed) and was hoping for some fuel saving as well.
yes they were both 17"
so the plan was to run it for testing on a full day fishing out deep as a normally would.
first test was last sat night, i noticed from the word go it was pulling more revs at the same speed.
wot it pulled a extra 500-600 rpm at the same speed, which is nearly were we needed to be, so we thought all is looking good and
it looks like the load has come off the engine????
until i refilled the boat today and have found out the fuel usage has gone up, with me covering a bit over half the distance i would normaly do for the same fuel amount....which when i look at it now.....more revs for same speed = more fuel
this supprized me greatly and i was wondering if anyone else has experimented with 3-4blade props.
luv to here from anyone.
cheers ron

POTM Jeremys mulloway ?
Submitted by kirky79 on Fri, 2012-07-27 10:16Was just checking out the POTM pics and noticed Jeremy's mulloway looks to have a concave tail and not a convex.
Could it just be the fishes tail moving away from the camera? or has it been bitten earlier in its life? or is it just a freak...
Anyway top fish either way!
Any ideas?

Stella 5000sw too big for creek barra?
Submitted by Braxi on Fri, 2012-07-27 09:39G'day,
Im looking into getting a spin reel for flicking lures at barra once the water heats up again. I was looking at the Stella 5000SW. Does anyone have any experience with these for this purpose? I was going to pair it up with the Ian miller raider 601 5-8kg flick stick. I've got the baitcaster in that rod and it's awesome! I've just got the misses the Shimano Thunnus for the same purpose but have talked her into me needing the Stella.... Any suggestions? I have noticed that overseas they have the Stella 4000sw. Would it be worth getting the smaller one?
Cheers.

trout farms - bridgetown?
Submitted by randall df223 on Thu, 2012-07-26 18:23I am heading down to a farm stay near bridgetown next week, and my wife has suggested (yes, suggested) that we find a trout farm and have a go at trout fishing for our dinner one day. I haven't had much luck googling it, so i was wondering does anyone know of any trout farms in the close proximity (we don't want to drive for hours)? I don't have a freshwater licence so it has to be a private farm in a private dam.

Newby saying hello
Submitted by pigdaddy on Thu, 2012-07-26 17:12Hi everyone!.
Just wanted to introduce myself as a new member to the fishwrecked family, names Jason and apart from the odd bit of freshwater and beach fishing I haven't really gone beyond that. However thanks to a bloke I work with I now have a serious bug of fishing & camping in me that I'm more than happy to indulge.
I found this site trolling (pun intended) google for fishing info, especially for WA (live in perth) and seeing some of the pic's on here has just inflamed me to get out with a big 12ft surfy and hit up some monsters, my first goal is to hit up Exmouth for some GT's and my favourite the mighty Mully. Any advice/tidbits or other info no matter how useless you may think will be taken in greatly (I've already been busted reading this site at work a few times lol). I'm thoroughly enjoying reading all the stories and now also watching/reading 'Reeltime" (bloody awesome so far!). I dont have any gear at the moment so I'm really looking to get suited up with some good but cheap stuff that'll lead me up in experience and skill to take on the big fish up north.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope to see you all around someday.
