Weekend Wagoe Trip
Submitted by dunsborough out... on Mon, 2012-07-16 12:54Had an unexpected trip invite up to wagoe for a quick weekend trip where ballooning was the mission. We got to camp and set up late thursday night. The cold conditions soon disappeared and we were greated to light Easterly Winds and clear skys. Four balloons were soon between 180 and 400m off the beach, and the gardies were skipping nicely. The first day was dull to say the least. After 5 hours of Easterlys, all that was dragged up the sand was a small Reef Shark, and countless NW Blowies. As the wind swung South, it was back to the drawing board and preparing for the next day. Even the bottom fishing was closed down, with mullet and herring strips left untouched for hours. Moods were positive at sunrise, and again 5 balloons whistled out to the danger zone, and all eyes were fixed on the splashdowns of the baits. The first hookup came at about 10am, just as the sun was really starting to warm the water. Garfish was on the menu for this mackie, as a whole gardie was down his throat, and the fight was fairly tame. The first fish monkey was off our back and we were all hopeful that this was a sign of things to come. At 16kg the Mackie was not big, but was in pristine condition and nice and fat through the body. no longer than 20min later, the second hookup came, and a battle with the shore break ended the fight and another Shark was lost. That hookup was the last of the trip, excluding NW Blowies, and the rogue Mackie landed was the only saving grace from calling this trip a failure. Never the less it was good to get away and put some hours in. Next trip will be within the month so shall keep you posted.

Fishing Reserves/marine Parks response
Submitted by Rob H on Mon, 2012-07-16 12:13Received the following from Barry Haase. Id suggest that while its easy to say politicians will do f-all once voted in, you can either make the effort and whinge righteosly later, or do jackshit and lose the right to whinge about the outcome (to me at least!)
"Good morning I write to you following the unveiling of the network of marine reserves by the Gillard Government on June 13 followed by the announcement on the 11 July by The Director of National Parks inviting public comment on the proposed Proclamations of Commonwealth marine reserves. The Gillard Government has failed to conduct appropriate consultation when developing these networks and the absence of sound scientific basis to the marine reserve boundaries is unacceptable. No consideration has been given to the quality of the Australian fisheries, recognised amongst the healthiest and best managed in the world. No consideration has been given to minimising social and economic impact on fishers, businesses and coastal communities. No consideration has been given to recreational fishing in Australia, a pastime with far more reaching effects than the simple act of throwing a line in. Recreational fishing promotes a healthy and active lifestyle and the social benefits of fishing are enormous. Economically, many regional businesses rely on recreational fishers I believe the Federal Environment Minister’s declaration of a chain of protected marine parks is more about appeasing green voters than it is about scientifically proven sustainability. I support marine protection that is based on science and developed in consultation with the community. The alliance between the Greens and this Government is disturbing. Those who wish to sacrifice their lifestyle in some evangelical pursuit of martyrdom are free to do so. Real Australians however should not have their rights trampled on by a government willing to be blackmailed by the greens just to stay in power. Our fishers are responsible and the industry is sustainable and properly managed. This proposed network is all about international grandstanding It is with this in mind I urge you to visit http://www.environment.gov.au/coasts/mbp/reserves/comments.html It is here you will find the Gazette Notice and associated documents along with details of how to provide comment on the proposed Commonwealth Marine Reserves Network. The Minister is required to consider this report before deciding whether to recommend to the Governor General that the reserves be proclaimed. It is important to note the 60 day public comment period closes on Monday 10 September 2012. If you have any queries or need more information please do not hesitate to contact me at Please forward this email to family, friends and associates in an effort to bring this Government to task over their lack of appropriate consultation and the absence of sound scientific knowledge in this matter. BARRY HAASE"

wedge report
Submitted by mulloway_hunter on Sun, 2012-07-15 19:15yep it was one of the better fishing trips us boys have had. first night friday we got there sussed out the holes and picked out spots
fish up was a nice taylor of 42 cms then i got a 45cm and a 37cm. then suprisenly on sun set my mate got a nice soapy of 45 and then thats were it all got going
me and my mate must have gotten 10 soapys from bout 35 to 55 60 cms then had a sleep and fished the tides change and like i said to my mate "bet you get a mully out that hole in the morn" sure enough 100cm mully come out of it 15min later fish for morning taylor but didnt get any
we went up to the point bout 830 900 and got the news that that guy got eaten whole and shouldnt be going out in the dingy.. so we just chilled and had lunch and stuffed around.
got back to our hole and fished it later that night but only got a few soapys and one taylor.
got up crack of dawn and went for a flick for taylor but didnt get mutch, we had a really interesting exsperence wen my mate hooked a taylor and just left it in the rod holder while he packed his swag up. pulled it in and found to have a full on clean bite of from just below the head and looked like a mully from all the pin prick teeth marks just near the gills. it was a big mully considering it had a simalar head and body thickness of a 47cm taylor my mate got earlier... so you could imagine the size of that mully :S. pretty mutch after that we packed up and went home so it was a pretty good weekend at wedge hopefully we get back fown there soon
will upload pics wen i get them off my mate this week hopefully

would this kill a new battery?
Submitted by grayzeee on Sun, 2012-07-15 08:15Bought a new cranking and deep cycle battery for the boat a month ago. (battery 1 in a duel system , which does all the work as I never use no.2)
The other night , I had the gps on, checking some stuff for the following mornings fishing.
I turned the gps off , but I forgot the battery isolator.
In the morning I could see a light on the dash , and the motor would barely trim up or down.
Bugger.
No prob , so I started the boat running both batterys and fished.
When I got home , I stuck the new battery on the ctek charger overnight. The charger registered that the battery had a good half a charge in it when I started.
After a good 16hrs , I ve just rechecked it. It is still registering the same amount of charge in the battery but it still won't trim the engine in the driveway.
Stuffed already ?

Reel Advice Daiwa or Shimano is there anything else?
Submitted by the_dude84 on Sat, 2012-07-14 21:37Looking for a new reel to go with my 9' foot lemax president royal for chucking lures at tailor/salmon. Have looked at FJ stradic 5000 and 4000 Daiwa Ballistic so far. Just wondering what else there is around the $250 mark or cheaper that can handle dragging big tailor out their reefy lairs. Keeping in mind the reel might on the rare occasion when i go on a charter be used for light jigging and working plastics. Thanks guys

DADS CHEATING PB DHUIE
Submitted by cahal.dahm on Sat, 2012-07-14 17:07so, dad caught a very nice dhuie this morning which im very jealous of, BUT, im not counting it cause it was on bait and not jig, cheating.... Any who, the day was very slow but had some nice conditions out there. We hit all of our usual spots, nothing much happening so we headed to a lump that we passed earlier in the morning that i didn't want to drift when we passed it earlier. Had a few drifts with only small pinkies coming up, then as we fished the spot more the sounder started to light up and we started getting dhuies, first came a small one around 60cm, then a 70cm then a 109cm one, wait what?????
Dad was using the old TLD 25 and a broom stick, which was meant to be for the release weight, because his other reel seized up on him. fish went 22.16kg on scales and maxed out a pair of 22kg scales at blue water tackle Mindarie

Any one going out tommorow
Submitted by glack on Fri, 2012-07-13 15:13I have been watching Seabreeze and getting all excited about heading out tommorow all week only to have my hopes crushed by BOM this afternoon with their prediction of 2-3metre swell tomorrow. I was thinking of heading out North of two rocks but I think she may get a bit hairy on a 3 metre swell. I have allways maintained a 2 metre limit going through there, I normally stretch to 2.5, but I think I need to draw the line at 3metres. Lets hope they revise it this arvo as all the other sites are still saying less than 2 metres. Is any one else heading out?

Are there still crabs in the river?
Submitted by Bruce on Fri, 2012-07-13 08:48Hey guys,
Was going for a fish today and was thinking about doing some crabbing too, keeping in mind i only have about 10m of rope on each net. I was thinking around Mt Henry bridge because its not too deep and i can fish under the bridge, or more up fremantle way in the shallower areas.
Thanks in advance

Bay of rest
Submitted by jighead on Fri, 2012-07-13 08:27Was thinking about taking the boat into the bay of rest at exmouth. It is a 4.75m quintrex on a good quality trailor. I have a 76 series landcruiser to tow it with. Was interested in peoples advice about launching and retrieving with the tides at this spot and also any problems with navigation of the area eg rockbars etc. that need to be looked out for.

fishing "Lip Grippers" - please name the good & better models
Submitted by Mainey on Fri, 2012-07-13 08:07Hi,
I'm interested in getting a fishing "lip gripper" to land fish from the boat
I've seen them from about $30 to well over $100 for what look basically the same looking item
obviously there are differences that are inbuilt with-in the 'handle' of the gripper, maybe the spring expanding mechanism etc.
Have no thought of paying for the top of the tree model if the lesser $$ work as advertised (maybe it's a big 'if'
)
Regards
