50lb o/h jigging rod recommendations

A mate has $300 tops to spend on a jigging rod to suit a talica 10 running 50lb.

He likes my deep jig 200 but I recon he could do better with that money.

What would you guys reckon is worth a look?

Certainly not against shipping a rod in either.

Suggested reel for JMP 150g

Need a new reel for my JM powerspell 150 thinking Talica 8 any thoughts?

Any baitfish around?

My stocks of bait are getting low in the freezer...

Particularly intereted in Scalies, Yakkas and Gardies. Has anyone been catching any in good numbers recently.

I've heard the Ammo Jetty was damaged in a storm, is this true?

Cheers

Matt

Mess at ramp. Shame

I was on a boat demo at Hillary's boat ramp today and i will say i'm very disappointed with what i was confronted with. Some fisherman had obviously bought home a catch of sharks and had obviously cut them up on the retrieval jetty leaving blood and guts and a huge mess. Then thrown bodies of 6 sharks i counted just back in the water.

So there is now 6 maybe 2 foot shark bodies, i counted about 15 chunks of fish including fins and other cut offs just sitting on boat ramp.

What are people thinking. It looks terrible, it stinks to high heaven and sadly you had to walk through the mess to get to your boats, its littering and obviously against the law. With fisherman already sitting with targets on our backs why would anybody do this?

Sad part is i rang DPI/ fisheries and tried three separate officers on mobile only to eventually give up no answer. The office staff must have passed on the message as a worker turned to clean up the mess as i was leaving.

Shame a real shame.

Beware of email

 Hello All

Fishers should beware of emails encouraging them to join the protest against the so called factory trawler in Tasmania via this website:

http://www.communityrun.org/petitions/stop-giant-fishing-trawler-in-tasmania

If you submit a protest through this site without reading the fine print and un ticking the box you will inadvertently become a member of Get Up!, a radical far left lobby group. This organisation campaigns for lockouts in marine and national parks. GetUp! recently bragged about it’s exponentially growing membership on the ABC’s The Drum program.

The survey was the initiative Rebecca Hubbard who is an operative of Environment Tasmania (The Conservation Council). Check out the Councils agenda here: http://www.et.org.au/campaigns and Rebecca’s involvement here: http://www.et.org.au/search/node/hubbard

Rather than giving green extremists a leg up, I suggest concerned fishers protest directly to the federal fisheries minister here:
joe.ludwig@maff.gov.au

Regards and good fishing

Best helping hand.

Decided to combine my 3 favourite in to 1.  Wife, Daughter and fishing.  As me missus has been naggin for along time to take Eveline to feed the ducks i thought why not combine my fishing (practicng with SP's) and her enjoyment of teasing the ducks with food.  Little did i know that my 17mth old would 1 carry my gear but 2 actually sit down and hold a rod with me haha.  Best afternoon in a long time did we catch fish.  Nope lol

Trailer Adaptor

Anyone know where I can get a 7 pin small socket to 6 pin small plug adaptor from? I thought I had one but it's gone walkabout & I need one so I can tow my new (to me anyway) tinny. I checked around on the net but can't find anyone that has them.

What is your worst boat ramp experience?

Mine, car battery died when retrieving boat.  Turned car engine off while hooking boat up at a metro ramp on a weekend!

Fortunately, someone had a tow rope on hand and pulled me and boat out very quickly.

Lesson learnt, keep engine running even when launching and rigging and Vicky verca.  Also I now keep a tow rope to return the favor should someone else suffer my misfortune and I’m on hand.

Fishing Options in October?

It looks like some keen fishy friends are coming over from the east coast in October. Keen to get them away for a good week. Was thinking of Shark Bay as there is plenty of options. Will be taking a 6m alloy and a car topper. Keen to hear form anyone who has fished the area in October, I hear the weather can be a bit suss. I was there apr last year and had brilliant weather for e whole week. Had a look back through some old posts and it seems the weather is always crap! Surely not the case? Keen to hear of any other options for October.

Beach Fishing

Hey guys looking to get into the beach fishing scene and am after some advice on getting a quality reel. Looking to spend upto around $200 as im just getting started but have no idea what will do the trick.

Not sure whether to use braid or mono either and how heavy to go with the line???

Was having a look at the Shimano Spheros 8000 but again not to sure. Hoping to target some winter tailor, mulloway and salmon early next year when they run.

Any advice or recomendations would be much apprectiated, cheers

jarrah pots

any help would be great

Bag limit, Boat fishing and demersal licence

After reading the interesting topic on bag limits for Tailor.

From up here in dampier it certainly appears that dhu numbers are on the increase. Now what interest me is whether there is more or less recreational activity because of the Licences required. Obviously up here we only need a Boat fishing licence and I have not seen a decline in boats going out since that was introduced.

But down south you need both.

Has that detered some from fishing? And has this had an effect on the stocks?

Just interested on the views.

Cheers

Quobba boating advice

Hey all.

Have a crew going to quobba for a while from this Friday and just want a bit of advice from those who would be kind enough to share it. I have read as many posts on quobba as I could search for alrerady but would like some other info.

I am taking my 5 meter glass boat up and just want to know what the go with boat fishing up there is- where to launch, is there reef to negotiate, better places to go etc. I am planning on launching at one of the beaches and either trolling just off the cliffs or sounding around for some good ground and giving it a go. Does anyone have any experience with boat fishing at quobba, not after co-ords or anything just a bit more knowledge on boat fishing up there. I have heard lots of reports that the sharks are quite bad at the moment up there and am thinking I might have a better chance of landing more from a boat. Any advice appreciated

Cheers

Vince

Daiwa seagate 4500e

 Hi guys

Anyone familiar with these reels?

After consideration I'm gonna look at replacing a 6500 saltist with a 4500e (low speed) seagate to run as a 50lb outfit as the saltist is far too big and heavy for my needs. I was gonna replace with 4500 saltist but don't require a high gear ratio reel

Aside from the gearings, are the saltist and seagate comparable reels around this price range?

Specs between the 4500 saltist and seagate look very similar ie weight, drag, capacity

Would also be looking at a rod capable of handling 50lb but still light for bottom bashing mainly but also throwing lures a small distance. Something like the combo jerk 64 would be ideal I assume but may be a little out of the price range

Any thoughts?!

Cheers

Moore river?

Hi all,

Im taking the yak out for a fish on friday, and its been a while since ive taken it to moore river. Has anyone been there lately for a fish or know what the river is doing? broken mouth etc?

Im looking to flick around some hard bodies and plastics for bream, since most time i fish there with baits and get smashed by runts and grunter. I can either launch at the boat ramp at the mouth or up river on the south side.

Any help on conditions, or where the bigger bream may hang would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

Squid jig colours

Just wanting to know what is your favourite brand jig and colour?

Also if you use different colours for different conditions?

Hook Removal Techniques

After my hook experience Thought I would share a few idea. Basically copied from the net, but these are the things I would try both on the boat and at work. If done quickly the string method is by far the simplest, and as mentioned is surprisingly painless. I dont routinely use local for this, but its not that flash with trebles, as the other points can also do damage. One way to overcome this, is to cut the other points off leaving something that looks like a single hook.

An essential tool on a boat/fishing is a plier (either fishing or normal) with a strong enough cutting edge to cut hooks. I have a side cutter on the boat for this and other uses, but it is overkill.

My edits are in { }

How to remove a fishing hook from a human, painlessly and safelyUsing this hook removal method, there is one common factor - the almost complete, and surprising, lack of any pain.

One day it happens to all anglers. A hook does it job and hooks up, but not into a fish. It hooks up in you or one of your fishing partners.

Removing a hook embedded over the barb, but not back out through the skin, is relatively easy:

FirstHook removal diagram

Make a loop about 10cm (6") long, in strong line, 10kg (20lb) plus, and pass it over the eye of the hook, and then up to the top of the bend of the hook. {I use very strong line here, if the line breaks all hell happens - so use overkill}

Then

Push firmly down on the eye of the hook so the eye of the hook touches the skin. {I tend to push a little down and forward, thus disengaging the barb}

Finally

With a sudden, strong yank on the line loop, pull up and away from the hook-eye. The hook should come out the way it went in, and because it will curve out the same way it went in the barb should not catch.

warning image   Very Important

It is very important to follow 'Step 1' to the letter if pain and discomfort is to be avoided. Most importantly the loop of line must be at the top of the hook bend, and the pull must be up and away.
Way too many articles on this method advise having the line at the back of the bend, and pulling straight back - this will only result in the barb catching and causing pain. {agree - pull up and away}

Another method is the push through that I had to perform on myself. This isnt as flash as above, but if the hook is deeply embedded it is almost the only choice on a boat or trip. If you can get in to a doc then I would as this is traumatic, and infection risk increases. In the surgery setting local anaesthetic is essential, on a boat ice or a bit off booze might be all you have.

Ice the exit area (I dont know it this works truely, but at least the victim thinks it does)

Then with a sturdy pliers push the hook through with as sharp a motion as possible ( just like ripping a plaster off skin, the quicker the less pain is perceived). It is painful.

Next cut the barb off, or otherwise, cut the eye off. Pick which ever is going to make the removal easiest, but always try and pull the bit that has already been through the skin back out the way she went in. That way you dont introduce more bugs than whats allready there.

It is then reletively easy to remove the hook, either drawing it back along the path it went in, or (not so good), pull it out from the barb end.

Important - if you have any disinfectant with you liberally use this to try and clean the area, but if it is going to cause pain like alcohol, Mercurochrome (old crap) etc, pass until the hook is out. The quicker the hook is removed the less pain. Ie do it before the body start to release pain chemicals. The more we think about it, the more it hurts.

DONT FORGET YOUR TETANUS STATUS - even if the hook is out, these are tetanus prone wounds and if not up to date go and see the Doc.

INFECTION: surprise surprise but they often DONT get infected, and I would wait to see what happens rather than just giving antibiotics. Using antibiotic at the start can kill off the less nasty bugs, and select resistant organisms. It is best to wait and see, and if it does become infected, then get some help with antibiotics.

My wound happened saturday, no Antibiotic so far and all is healing nicely.

Hope this helps in this nasty circumstance, because a hook up to a non fish isnt as much fun as a fish, and can ruin a trip. Scrape up some courage and go the string. That causes very little if any pain.

Cheers

Exmouth closures??

Mate and I were planning a trip to exmouth later this year and he has just msgd me saying that he's been told by a charter company that there is a fishing closure on from mid October-mid December in exmouth. Does anyone know if there is truth to this?

stolen

im not sure if there is one of these threads on here already but i was flicking through perth crime reports and gumtree and saw alot of boats have been stolen recently so maybee if this gets made sticky or something we all can post links or descriptions the more eyes looking the better the chances i guess was just an idea

heres one i just come across on perth wa crime reports and makes me angry

Stolen Quintrex plate ally $1000 reward. Stolen from Pinjar on Sun 8th July. It's a white 5.45m Quintrex plate ally reg DX279 with a Suzuki outboard on a telwater trailer reg 1TJK662. More info and photos coming. I'm placing this post for my neighbour, an elderly retired gentleman who purchased the boat for $28000 only a few months ago and sadly didn't have it insured. This heartbreaking crime is believed to have been committed by a scumbag driving a late model white dual cab Hilux 4wd with a matching canopy. Please if you're aware of someone dodgy with a new boat, take a better look thank you.
