Rotto Winds and Protected Areas
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Tue, 2020-10-20 11:53I'm taking my boys 10 and 8 across to Rotto on the early ferry Fri morning and staying in a chalet overnight and I have to confess that I have never stepped foot on the island as we generally shoot into Herring Bay or Carnac for day trips in the boat so it's all completely new to me.
It looks like there's going to be a brisk SE'ly blowing so would the area around Pinky Beach/The Basin/Longreach Bay offer ample protection for some very shallow inshore snorkling? We'll probably chuck a couple of unweighted mulies off the jetty at night time and try our luck in the wind for some tailor.
Cheers

Dropper loops breaking
Submitted by dale 308 on Sat, 2020-10-17 16:39Hi all ive always seem too be having issues with dropper loops on paternoster rigs i use 80lb blackmagic leader but if i hook a half decent fish it always seems too break at the bottom dropper i have switched to crane 3ways and they work but they do have there disadvantages take longer too tie more knots. Unsure if its my knot skills or leader choice if i go heavier leader i seem too hook less fish.
My pb snap on the bottom meat coupla weeks back 93cm

Manual Inflatable PFD
Submitted by C.P on Fri, 2020-10-16 08:44Now that Im officialy an old bloke, I'm thinking that i should really be wearing a life jacket on the boat rather than having it stowed in the bow. At least when I'm pulling cray pots if not all the time
I have a Marlin manual inflatable PFD but its not comfortable to wear.
Any recommendations for a good brand? - how many of you wear them when your boating?

Recfishwest Survey
Submitted by Nick1712 on Thu, 2020-10-15 19:24Evening all,
Been out of the fishing game for a while and only just getting MOJO back, but still get the Recfishwest updates and the latest survey has me a touch cynical.
For clarity, I rarely keep anything that I catch and personally view those who use the argument of being able to take home fish as justification for spunking 000s of dollars on a boat as crazy. But this latest questionnaire has me concerned that we are being played for fools. Somehow they have managed to crowbar the whole COVID situation into what is according to the ToR is a 'plan for the future'.
The questions seem 100% loaded towards giving the minister a mandate to cut limits and takes then turn around
and leverage the 'results' of a recreational fishing survey.
Anyone else got issues with it or am I jumping at shadows??

Expressions of intrest
Submitted by Silver Fox on Wed, 2020-10-14 07:48Hi all. I'm moving to Thursday island in the near future and I'm weighing up my options whether to take my boat over with me or leave it here with some lucky punter. Everything on the vessel is new complete strip and rebuild done by myself no expense spared and I've put over a thousand hours time, blood, sweat and tears into her. Not to mention countless hours of banging head against a brick wall!
She's a 28ft Bruce Harris Shark Cat flybridge model that's just had a full refit over the last year. Refit includes two brand new fuel tanks ( 760 litres in total ) new rear deck, new midships deck. All windows out, rebuild and tint. Window bras for all windows. New front hatch. All new interior paint all new interior ( seats, upholstery, benches, 130 litre vitrifrigo fridge/freezer, sinks, plumbing lights the whole kit if you get my drift). Heliatos solar hot water system with a 25 litre storage tank, 200 litres of water, toilet ( direct discharge with space for holding tank if needed )and shower in seperate room under flybridge ladder on rear deck. Gas stove and grille on rear deck 2x2kg gas bottles with dual gas sniffers and solenoid. Raw and fresh water wash down pumps. Stress free drum winch with new anchor, chain and rode. Two x 200 litre underfloor wet lockers ( I'm 6,4 and have squeezed my fat ass into em ) which drain into the bilges, twin Atwood Sahara auto bilge pumps.
400 watts of solar on the rear hard top being controlled by a Victron pwwm unit feeding four batteries. All new wiring for all systems on board. Simrad evo 3nss12 with Simrad hydraulic autopilot, 1kw wetbox transducer shooting through the starboard hull midships. Celfi phone booster with Moonraker whip. Icom VHF radio with ZCG whip all new.
Accommodation bigger than king size bed in front cabin. Two couch / beds in main cabin sleeps four easily. All new cushions and upholstery. New helm chair on flybridge. All new carpets throughout ( not installed yet ). The boat is in the final stages of completion new Bimini top to be installed and everything should be finished within the next four weeks.
Stainless dingy crane on flybridge roof ( currently not fitted ) .
Twin counter rotating Supercharged ( Damn they sound good..: ) 2006 Mercury Verado 175s 1160 hrs . Receipts for 5k for full major service on both donks. 0 hrs since service. Cowling resprays on both motors with new OCA covers. Stainless props in excellent condition. The boat has had a total repaint from the gunnels up all International paint. Hulls paint is in good condition, a few dings and scratches. Hulls below waterline will be antifouled in the near future prior to re splashing.
Looking for 95k. No trailer as she lives in a pen in Carnarvon.

cray pots
Submitted by wez0062 on Mon, 2020-10-12 12:21any recomendations for small-ish cray pots that do not need to be soaked before use, & will catch crayfish given the right conditions.
Will be using a Rigid Inflatable to drop & pull the pots, so i don't want big heavy pots with potential to damage the tubes on the boat.
trhanks in advance

Unstuck Pot
Submitted by Brock O on Sun, 2020-10-11 18:59Quick one from our trip this morning, Thought I post it given the topics of late..
Catching up with forum member (Guy).. Still trying, to relieve a stuck pot at the back of GI. Top bloke and an enjoyable trip.
Was a nice morning for a casual cruise, sorted his pots followed with a quick dive...wasnt much joy with the dive due to the recent weather, basically swimming in a milk shake on medium speed but the need to get salt in my ears was to great to pass up.
Quick squid for no keepers before heading in...Bulk carrier was absolutely belting, but the fisheries boat following was in an even bigger rush.
Guy helping a bloke in a bit of grief at the ramp...shortest bow rope we have ever seen...
Flat head went 48cm...see our it goes in a minute with some fresh garlic Cray.
Cheers Guy.

A PB Pinky !
Submitted by The Saint on Sun, 2020-10-11 09:52Went out for a demersal bash on Friday with Mrs and grandson. The night before, young Jye made it quite clear that a decent pinky was his target for the day.
Set him up on the Alvey winch, he loves using that as it allows him to fish pretty much unassisted.
He not only nailed his pinky, but at 68cm it beat his previous PB of 66cm (and that was his first ever when he was 5).
A very keen young fisho !

Boat trailer brakes -- HELP
Submitted by wez0062 on Sun, 2020-10-11 07:59Hi guys, I have just purchase a 5.8mtr rib, private sale. Stupidly the only thing I did not check were the trailer brakes. The actual brakes are frozen, open.
The discs are fine but looks like I need the actual whole pads & maybe the carrier replaced on both sides.
I have a holiday at Esperance planed for next weekend, so u am searching for someone or a mobile mechanic to come to my house in North Lake to do the work for me this week.
My work hours just don't allow me to get this to a workshop.
If anyone can help me out with a cash job or a mobile mechanic, I would be bloody greatful.
C
Thanks in advance, Wez

Submitted by Silver Fox on Sat, 2020-10-10 06:32Hello all.
It's officially official now my wife and I are moooving to Thursday island in the Torres straights for the next three years. Being the resident house bitch ( my wife's the smart one in the family ) it will be my daily duty after making sure the house is clean to go fishing!. Can't wait to drag the big duck over there and get into it. I will endeavor to learn how to post pictures and do write ups on a regular basis ( might even get a go-pro ) just to piss you guys off....:D.

Shark attack suspected at Wylie Bay, Esperance
Submitted by hezzy on Fri, 2020-10-09 14:33Shark attack suspected at Wylie Bay, Esperance, on WA's south coast where surfer is missing
hope to hell this ends well and they find the bloke ok soon , as it is not looking good at present ,
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-10-09/shark-attack-in-esperance-wa-reported/12748378
there is also a whale carcass washing ashore south of bunbury at peppy beach with some big nasties eating off it over the last 24 hours
so advice is to stay clear of that area if diving or kayaking etc

Boat attacked by Shark three mile near Scarborough
Submitted by Superfish on Fri, 2020-10-09 09:40Was fishing on Tuesday night in my Voyager Ghia about 6.45 pm. Had just caught some nice tailor and was hoping for a pinky. Mate hooked a skippy and as he pulled the skippy on board we heard this awfull crunching fibreglass sound. My wife and mate both looked at me and we all said WTF was that? I didnt let on but i knew the sound of crunching fibreglass and had a nervous look over the side to see if i could see anything. we pulled the anchor about then and headed back to Hillarys in the dark.
Next morning i pulled the sharks tooth from the bottom of the boat and could clearly see the outline of the bite mark from what i think may have been a big Mako or large Whaller. The bite mark measued 400 ml wide. Pretty scarry wife has said no more night fishing for her. Glad we were in a solid boat with lots of freeboard.
