Rotto Raft-Up (Boxing Day)

Just seeing if there are any boys going "FISHING" on Boxing Day at Rotto for Raft-Up? I’m assuming no real fish will be caught though. Lol. If anyone has any room for a few chicks let me know as I have a few friends keen to go as we missed out on tickets and they are now prepared to sell themselves to get on a boat... Hehehe. (Just kidding)... Don’t get too excited.

Peaceful Bay

Heading down to Peaceful Bay for several weeks from the 22nd, fished the area before and had some outstanding fishing. Just want any info related to rigs used down that way that may improve Groper catch.

newby

 Hi guys n gals

Been sitting on the fence for a while and have finally joined. Love this site and all its useful information (and some not quite so useful but bloody funny  ). Love all aspects of fishing and always willing to chip in for fuel, bait, booze etc if someone is kind enough to offer me a spot on their pride and joy! I have all my own good quality gear for everything from squidding to popping to bottom bouncing and jigging, sp's etc.I live NOR but always willing to travel. Work full time, so generally weekends only time off. As the name suggests, I am a rather large bloke (6ft 6 and 120ish kg on a good day!) hahaha. Anyway, thanks again to the mods etc for such a great and informative site.

Cheers

Storys of pot robbers caught in the act

Seeing as though we are getting so many storys of scum that are robbing cray pots i thought it would be good to here some storys   where you or mates have caught idiots tampering with ya pots red handed.

Heard a story a while back of a pro who pulled up a pot with  a diver attached with his arm in the pot still hahaha

Postage costs for rods

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone has had any experience posting rods. I am looking a buying a certain rod at the moment and if i do get it i will be responsible for the postage. It is a two piece 8 footer, so ill assume the parcel would be just over 4ft. It will be travelling from sydney to melbourne. If anyone could point me in the direction of a company or has any experiences themselves that would be great.

Nth Metro dhufish/snapper

Hi all,
im new to the site, have been struggling over the years to catch a dhufish or snapper of legal size. I have a 5.2m boat and i go out from hillarys, been to rotto before a couple of times. I read reports of people catching them at the 3 mile reef or hale road reef, but i have tried on so so many occasions and can only get small ones (if any) amongst a whole heap of wrasse etc. Others tell me to go deeper and just find a lump but it seems once you go past the 3 mile reef the bottom is flat the whole way out. The depth sounder has never picked up anything other than a gentle gradient getting progressively deeper. Trying in 30m of water i only get whiting and juvenile snapper to about 30cm. I have looked everywhere for one of these 'lumps' but cannot find anything.
Just wondering with the demersal closure ending can anyone please give me a tip or something to find some decent dhufish or snapper territory given i head out from hillarys.
Cheers, happy fishing

Re-Pete Fish Ruler

Re-pete Fish Ruler The Story - Two mates (Peter Thomas and Peter Salamone) wanted to find a Faster and more Accurate way of measuring fish. A sticker on the side of the boat or an Esky lid, led to inaccurate measuring and fish being out of the water too long. Features of the “Re-Pete Fish Ruler” are quite amazing: Virtually unbreakable (under normal use) Shatterproof UV stabilized 10 years + Low heat conduction (cool working surface) Lightweight Using the Ruler 1. Before handling the fish, please wet your hands and the Fish Ruler. 2. Carefully lift the fish (supporting its body) onto the ruler and position its nose so as to be touching the vertical aspect of the ruler. 3. Gently keep the fish in position whilst measuring at the tip of its tail. Notes Those fish not being kept should be released quickly and carefully. Fish can be measured in the water using the Re-Pete Fish Ruler also. *** We were approached by Peter Thomas (Fishwrecked member Piston Broke) to see if we wanted to stock the product. Certainly a good idea with accurate measurement and you can upgrade the sticker when any changes are made so buy once and have it for years. Similar style of board to what tagging guys use and one that we'll support. They sell for around $19.95 (less FW discount) ***

speed limit in the upper swan

not sure if its been posted already but to those who spend time in the swan, are you aware of the speed limit change?

i found out on sunday by the enforcers, just a freindly warning for now they said.

from the belmont ski area(maylands ramp) up to the guildford rd bridge has changed from 8knts to 5knts wich is idle speed.
then from guildford rd bridge up stream is 4 knts.

i have spent many many years in the upper swan and dont take any notice of the signs anymore and just travell along at 8knts, was a supprise when they pulled me over and informed me of the change.
it is also well signed i noticed once they told me, and has been for the last 2 weeks.

i also noted that the ferrys were not doing 5knts, maybe they are exempt?????

cheers ron

Sunday Jigging with Nebraska Charters.

Hello Everyone at Fishwrecked,
Another new member to this forum. Long time reader first time posting.
First of all I would like to thank you for your support to this site and sharing your knowledge and experience. Your experience has given me a different dimension to my fishing and boating.
I easily spend an hour or two everyday in this site, but I was shy to post or comment. Now I decided it’s the right time to come out of the darkness and walk along with you guys.
Went out this Sunday with Nebraska charters for sambo jigging, as most of you know who Nebraska charters are, Steve and Tony (Owner operators) at Nebraska are top blokes.
First Tony took us to his secret shallow spot behind Rottnest and the sounder showed us heaps of fish and we all dropped our jigs and the first jig comes out of the water and the whole crew witnessed couple of monster sharks chasing the jigs. So Tony decided to move immediately and we hit the south barges and we where the first boat out there. Shit loads of fish on the sounder we started jigging and jigging nothing happened for more than 20 minutes. One of the crew members sited a shark few meters away so we moved from one barge to other and same result. Now we decided to send some baits to check what’s happening at the bottom and not even a sniff.
Now Tony decided to take as to the FADS and we saw some bait school s around and looked promising. We stared to troll around and nothing happened for almost an hour, so we drifted some baits around and again same result. We then decided to go back to the barges and there where more than a dozen of boats and honestly no one hooked anything. It was a shame but we can’t complain it’s the nature of the beast.
Finally we gave up and decided to go back to shallow waters to catch some flatties and whiting. On the way back we saw some birds working on the surface and where moving fast so we tried trolling some skirted lures and divers and one of the crew members caught a decent Bonito. Then we ended up on some good sand patches and pulled some nice flatties and plum whiting. Now the south westerly picked up and we were back at the boat ramp. It was disappointing, but over all a beautiful day to be out in the water.
Thank you guys for reading my report and a quick note before I go, if you are planning for sambo jigging please think twice. It’s a big Noah to me at the moment.
Cheers!!!

Crack down on sales of moorings on Swan and Canning river.

Well looks like the state goverment is going to stop all this speculative buying and selling of moorings. News is that they will limit mooring sales prices to $5000 each and stop hiring on of moorings not used and taking back those moorings sitting iddle and having no boat registered to it.

GOOD!!! about bloody time they stopped the use of moorings as a trading item. Some people are sitting on a number of moorings and asking silly figures for them.

http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/wa … ing-sales/

with luck this will get a lot of those useless unseaworthy tubs off the river that are just sitting there and being held for speculative resales. I hate seeing moorings unused and sitting iddle or half rotting boats on them that will never ever go to sea again sitting on a mooring that could be used by some one who really wants to be out and on the water.

Transporting Cray fish limits

Just wondering if anyone knows what the posession limit is for transporting Crays?

Am going to Victoria for a holiday and planning to take some crays over. Noticed it stated 24 crays is the posession Limit at your place of residents, but is there one for transporting them?

Cheers

Cockburn Sound crabbers will reap benefits this summer

Cockburn Sound crab fishers reap benefits from revised management system-Fisheries Dept media release
Friday, 10 December 2010

Crab fishers will benefit this summer from the continuing improvement in blue swimmer stocks in Cockburn Sound.

Fisheries Minister Norman Moore said it was encouraging to see crab stocks recovering well after a three-year total ban on crab fishing was replaced last Summer by a limited three and half month fishing season.

“The fishery’s continuing recovery has enabled me to extend the coming recreational season by an extra month,” Mr Moore said.

“Recreational crab fishing in Cockburn Sound will run from December 15 until the end of April, 2011. This extension will enable recreational fishers to enjoy the pastime during Easter next year.

“The commercial crab fishing season in Cockburn Sound will remain the same (December 15 – March 31), but for those fishers I have reduced the minimum size of blue swimmers they can catch to 135mm carapace width (down from 140mm).”

Mr Moore said Department of Fisheries’ researchers had monitored Cockburn Sound’s crab stocks and noted a slow increase in recruitment prior to this year. However, 2010 had delivered much higher counts of juvenile crabs.

“We must manage the sustainability of the fishery, so that generations to come can build their own great memories of fishing for crabs in Cockburn Sound,” Mr Moore said.

“It is also important commercial operators can maximise the fishery’s economic value.”

When fishing for crabs in Cockburn Sound, recreational fishers must comply with the crab fishing rules that apply in all areas of the West Coast Bioregion.

Recreational fishing rules - available on a special flyer - ‘Crabbing for blue swimmer crabs in the West Coast Region’ - include a minimum size limit of 127mm carapace width, a bag limit of 10 crabs per fisher per day, and a boat limit of 20 crabs.

The flyer is online at www.fish.wa.gov.au and available through Department of Fisheries’ offices and information outlets.

KG's in 2m

Headed out from Woodmans 7am, after catching a squid on the first cast we expected to follow up with another 10. Turned out to be a lucky cast with the next hour brinnging no results.
Decided to test the edges of the week patches and rigged up for a KG. That turned out be the best decision of the day.

Caught these 6 on light gear in 2m of water. Gave a nice fight on light gear.

Will have to google to find the best way to cook them.

Nice day out in the sound!

Took the family out on the boat for a beautiful morning in the sound close to Garden Island. It was slow first up and only managed one decant squid after moving around a little.

Found a little 6 foot hammerhead cruising around on the surface which we followed for a while before he got annoyed of us.
We then anchored and burlied up a little and soon had a frenzy of herring behind the boat. They were solid herring too and great fun on the light gear. I was being outfished by the better half until something solid hit my tiny piece of squid and had the little stradic screaming. I called it for a snapper after some solid head shaking and good runs but after 5 mins it started to feel a lot like a ray with the way it was pulling. It wasn't till a good 10 mins had gone that we got a look at it, a solid pinky! Couldn't believe it, fishing for herring and I hook a nice snapper, a few days before the ban ends! We boated it for a quick photo and just as we got it onboard that friendly dolphin came up to say hello.

It was a great fish and was quickly released over the otherside of the boat from the dolphin and I hope he made it away ok as the dolphin dissapeared just after in the same direction.
Soon after I had another solid hookup that busted me off a second later, possibly another snapper. Might have to return to this spot after the ban is off and actually send down some appropriate baits.
We ended up with a couple dozen nice herring and 1 lone skippy for our efforts. What an awesome day out. Also saw a little penquin cruising around on the way home in the chop... funny little guys.

todays boating amusement.

just thought i'd drop a line to all my fellow fishwreckedians in regards to todays wonderful boatign adventure with heks-

decided on leeuwin ramps, dunno why my mate paid for parking so its all good, that place is absolutely chockers tho. glad they dont all go to cockburn.. coz then itd be chockers down there..

anyway, boat in water. engine dont start, heks get frustrated. boat goes back on trailer heks goes home to indulge in beer and have a play with it to try work it out..

turns out the gaffer tape from last weeks adventure had decided to become lose,.. bolted connections back on. starts first time, i have another beer and yell at it abit... boat is washed, in the driveway and im having imaginary crayfish for dinner. WOOOO

on a side note- seems its blowing a bit more smoke than usual- when the mate gets back (this week) i told him its going in for a service, old man rekns might be too much oil going into the fuel- its auto mix job - can the ratio get out of whack? a service should clear up these issues yer?

anyways, hope you all have better luck than me.. im gettin sick of this boat.. :P ill be lookign for deckie spots from now on- work finishes for me on the 15th so anyone heading out any time anywhere with need of a deckie with a cray ticket and rfbl- please give me a hoy- got my own gear will chip in for fuel and all that jazz - i just want to go on a boat that doesnt have issues for once...

cheers, Dwayne
