Good Day Down South
Submitted by Seaquest on Mon, 2010-05-17 10:33Decided to go for my first fish at home on Saturday since coming back from Exy a couple of weeks ago. With the winds going to be light northerlies all day we headed north to some ground so we could have the wind behind us on the way home.
Not usually a big fan of fishing in northerlies down here because they combine with the northerly currents and create a fast drift but I was itching for a fish. Once we reached our first destination the wind had dropped right out and there was hardly any drift
at all. Took me a couple of hours of sounding around before I found any fish, but once I found them it was on for the next hour. First fish to come on board was a couple off pinkies around the 5kg mark. Next drift resulted in two dhuys (one kept and one
released) and another pinky. The one pictured which was caught by my mate Chris was one of the palest dhuys I have every seen. Probably reflects the ground it was caught on.
The next drift went in a different direction to the previuos two and resulted in a nice KG for Chris and another small dhuy which was released.
With the drift all over the place I decided to get right over the school and drift off it. As soon as I hit the bottom I was on to something big that didn,t want to stop. After about a 5 minute fight the hooks pulled and fish was lost. Bugger.
In the mean time the boys were also both on. Gav managed another nice pinky and Chris was on to something good which turned out to be a good size dhuy.
With our bag limits reached it was time to head home. It was definetly Chris's day and he let us know it.
Love fishing the SW it can be just as good if not better than the NW at times.
Cheers
Brendan

Weekends Hammerhead
Submitted by DhuBoi on Sun, 2010-05-16 21:15Seeing that the weekend forecast was predicting good weather me and the old boy decided to head out and see if we could score anything decent. Ventured out early morning to what i thought was bloody freezing lol . Anyways we drifted over a few spots with nothing really savagely on the bite. The old boy said he had something semi decent on to which i got the net and up popped a estimated 4kg Cuttlefish . Sweet fresh bait , anyways after that the old boy lands a female western king wrasse and i get out my 200lb handline n set up a line for a shark or anything big , hook up the wrasse n throw her out, ten minutes later i thought i was seeing things as im looking out the wrasse is jumping out of the water someting is chasing it . Then nothing spewww, then the old boy pulls up a huge male western king wrasse n i thought score bigger the better i reeled the little wrasse in and replaced it with the big boy. threw it back out 15 minutes later i see the line coming towards the boat so i quickly pull in the slack n then BOOOM the handline which is under the esky flies out hits the roof of the boat dad juggles it before i quickly grab it the line unreeling wraps around my hand and quickly restricts and cuts into my skin before i wrestled a tiny bit of line back in order to get my hand free no way was i cutting the line on this one. Then the fight was on it was powerful as and took the line around the back of the boat around the cabin to the back of the boat again, after one physco run i was not letting it take to much line this time, by now i think stuff this n pulled as hard as i could gaining some line back before after about 2 minutes i could see the outline of the hammerhead gracefully gliding through the water , as i got it closer to the boat the old boy is frantically reeling in all lines and clearing the boat floor as to not mess up or tangle lines , soon as i dragged it to the side of the boat its went PHYSCO banging n smashing around i grabbed the gaff of the old boy and slammed it through the sharks mouth and at the count of three and a quick discussion on how crazy its going to go on the boat floor i drag it over the side not long after i jump over the shark holding its head down sitting on it , feeling the brut power that such a fish can possess and how easily they destroy there prey in seconds. while dad was holding the tail. i then cut the sharks head half way of to kill it. Not long after i clean it and gut before putting it on ice.WHAT a fight on a handline one of my most addrenlin pumping session of fishing n scoring my first hammerhead shark . Also to dad the bait catching king, He scored 3 cuttlefish during the day all ranging 3 to 4 kilos which i thought was insane catches and saves us buying premuim octopus for 22 bucks pfft. He also scored , One 6kg kilo pink snapper and a decent size fox fish to nearly 2kg which would not release. All out a great day on the water .

OUCH!
Submitted by boneyman on Sun, 2010-05-16 07:48Got stung by what looked like a Lion Fish (1 foot long, mottled brown colour, spiky) a couple of times on the same hand yesterday.
Almost fainted, violently sick and unbelievable pain for two hours. My hand and forearm are still badly swollen and painful 24 hours later.
Learnt a lot from the experience (know what fish to expect and their risks, carry a decent first aid box, seriously consider going out deep alone, make sure your passengers know how to drive the boat, etc). Still a relative novice.
Anybody else been stung, know how long the swelling will last, confirm that it was likely to be a Lion Fish.
Thank you
(we also caught a gurnard, definitely something else (I've attached a photo of one of the little feckers)

JetSki Fishing WA
Submitted by JR JetSki on Sat, 2010-05-15 15:36Hi everyone,
I am posting this topic to try and grow the JetSki Fishing extreame sport in WA. JetSki fishing is very popular in South Africa, New Zealand, and America with most members probably between to South African or New Zealand. Not sure which one of these two are the biggest but they are doing the JetSki fishing thing pretty often. New Zealand has been doing well with great fish comming out.
We are a few guys at the moment doing JetSki fishing in WA and we would like to encourage this way of fishing so as to grow the popularity in WA. It is very new here but I am sure there has been some guys doing it very quietly for some time. How about letting us hear about you, your catch and your JetSki fishing stories. Pictures would be great as well.
Why? It is a different way of fishing, It's exciting, you can move around pretty quick, it is easy, it is cheaper than a boat, it's a challenge because you have no help so it's you and your catch, its nice to go out and fish together as a group and this is the safe way to do it. There are more reasons than these but I gues for me its the excitement of the speed in getting to where you want to be pretty quickly and most of all, meeting new JetSki fisho's and going out fishing as a group.
I know this is not everyones kettle of fish but surely there will be some of you guys that would want to give this a go.
If you are interested in JetSki fishing and need some advise please let me know. Between the few of us currently doing this sport I am pretty confident that we can help, advise and assit by sharing ideas with you in getting the setup required to get started. Once you have the JetSki you are 90% there. The rest is easy. There is also a lot of help on the web sites so no shortage of information.
Very important - I would value support in this sport especially in the way we practice it. That is to obay all the local fishing rules and ledgeslation requirement regarding the boating rules, PWC rules and all that goes together with a responsible attitude. I am sure if we develop and promote JetSki fishing in this way we will be supported and respected in the fishing community.
Any experienced fisho's wanting to give advise here please do so. We can do with your help, advise and support. It will be very much appreciated.
Looking forward in hearing from you,
Regards
JR JetSki (Johan Roux)

Exmouth
Submitted by fishing fanatic on Sat, 2010-05-15 11:55i was just looking for some advice from everyone on fishwrecked. me and my mate are heading up to exmouht for a week in the second week of the school holidays coming up. now i was just wondering 3 differnt thing. 1: what sort of shorebased fishing is there and what sorta gear would be looking at needing to take up there as space in the car is limited, what sort of fish would be be able to get in these spots 2 and if there are any differnt to normal reugaltions up there that i should know about.
2: are there any charters that run from up there? if so has anyone got any info on it/them just looking at like day charters not overnight ones. or even if anyone would be willing to take me and my mate out on thier boat and we chip in for fuel, bait, etc. we both 17 and know our stuff pretty well.
3: what sort of oppurtunitys are there for snorkeling/spearfishing from shore based spots again because we cant take the boat up there.
Any help would be apprectaited and if anyone wants to just got for a beach fish or something like that while we are up there feel free to come join us :)

Jervoise Bay Southern Breakwater closed to vehicles
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Sat, 2010-05-15 09:03LandCorp recently closed vehicular access to the Southern Breakwater of the Jervoise Bay marine industries harbour (generally known as ASI Groyne) accessed from Clarence Beach road. The ASI Groyne will, however, remain open to pedestrian access and recreational fishing.
In a letter to Recfishwest, LandCorp fully detailed the reasons that caused them to take this action and unfortunately for us much of the problem seems to have been caused by the anti‐social behaviour of general community members rather than recreational fishers. The reasons for the closure include damage to fencing on sites adjacent to the breakwater to gain access to jetty structures, rocks thrown at the historic MV Perth which is moored adjacent to the breakwater for renovation, vehicles travelling at high speed on the breakwater, vehicles using the breakwater for late night meetings, and rubbish dumping along the breakwater and in the harbour.
LandCorp has asked Recfishwest to advise its members of the closure of the breakwater to vehicles and they have also asked us to warn members who are using the breakwater to be careful of broken glass and discarded syringes on the breakwater.
Recfishwest has responded to LandCorp accepting their decision to close the breakwater to vehicles – we have no realistic alternative. On the other hand we have stressed the importance of retaining the best access possible to potential fishing sites. This is particularly important in Cockburn Sound, which is so close to such a large proportion of the population of Western Australian. In our response we have asked them to consider providing one or more fishing platform along the breakwater to improve the access for older and less agile people.
In view of the concern LandCorp has expressed about the problems of rubbish, broken glass in particular, Recfishwest is considering another clean up day for this popular recreational fishing spot in the near future. The last ASI Groyne cleanup day, held in July 2009, was a great success with many fishers volunteering their time to help maintain a clean fishing environment.
Thanks to Recfishwest for the information.

Fortescue River boat launch
Submitted by Bodie on Fri, 2010-05-14 12:37Just chasing a little info or even a picture of the ramp at Fortescue?
Planning another monte's trip in July, possibly taking 2 boats over.
1 will leave from dampier as it definately wont be able to launch from a creek, but the other is a 6.2m razorline.
Probably going to try head over through the night as this time of year the winds are generally down making it a good trip over.
Thanks
Bodie

rescued crayfisherman fined over illegal crayfish
Submitted by bod on Fri, 2010-05-14 10:10ABC online
Updated May 14, 2010 09:59:00
A 43 year old man has been fined nearly $30,000 for illegally fishing for rock lobsters in closed waters near Carnarvon.
Patrick Donald Daniels has been charged with taking nearly 200 western rock lobsters from Quobba Point in January 2008.
He had about 100 cray pots in the area.
Daniels appeared in the Perth Magistrates Court earlier this week and was ordered to pay just over $29,000 in fines.
He was also ordered to pay nearly $800 in court costs and was granted a spent conviction.
Daniels was one of three fishermen rescued earlier this week after his cray boat sunk off the Esperance coast.
The men took to a life raft and set off an emergency beacon which sparked a six hour rescue effort with an RAAF C130 Hercules flying to the location.
The three men were eventually winched from the raft by a rescue helicopter and taken to hospital.

GPS Reciever
Submitted by doublej on Fri, 2010-05-14 08:42Just a quick one.
I'm about to install a new GPS in the boat.
Question is where is the best place for the reciever to go.
I have a 7mtr ally hardtop and I heard that if you put the reciever on the roof (Inbetween the ariels) you will get too much interferance.
Not sure if that is correct or not.
Then one of my mates said just put it in the coner under the windscreen on the dash (port side away from all the electronics).
Seems like a good spot but haven't seen too many there.
Any previous experience / advice would be appriciated.
Cheers
