Land based rod to match saltiga 4k

Just after some advice on a rod to suit my saltiga 4k for land based lure casting/light ballooning and throwing sinkers to 6 ounce probably looking at anything 8-10foot, price range is under $400 and don't really want a shimano rod. Running pe3.

cheers

no salmon but..

 we found these last night!

Downrigger Shop - Rod & Reel Quality

Hi FW Crew, has anyone bought rods & reels from the Downrigger shop, in particular the snapper combo (mainly interested in the rod)

I broke a couple of rods on the weekend (don't ask!) so need to get a few replacements, and don't want to spend a fortune. Also considering a bulk spool of braid as the price looks reasonable.

I guess the gear probably comes from China or somewhere in Asia, but that isn't always a bad thing. Any feedback appreciated.

Cheers,

Browndog.

Best Exmouth weather website

Hi all. Heading up to Exy on the weekend for 2 weeks. There are a few websites around and most would be from Learmonth. Any favourites?

Thank you in anticipation.

New Cyclone

Bit late in the season, but cyclone watch happening now for a low up north. Exmouth maybe again.

Fish Roe- Salmon- Tailor- Herring

Caught a mixed bag today- Nice conditions in the Sound looking for schools of fish.

Breakfast for tomorrow- From the top of plate:  Salmon Roe   Tailor Roe   Herring Roe.

Worth a try for LB pinkies yet?

Seabreeze says gonna be blowing pretty hard Monday morning with nearly three metre swell, anybody reckon that will get the pinkies biting off Mindarie marina wall or do you guys think should wait for a bigger swell and wind?

South West Salmon?

Any reports that the Salmon are still around Dunsborough the past weekend?

Cheers

Young life lost tragically of rocks

Tragically a young woman has lost her life of the rocks down south whilst fishing with her boy friend.

My deepest sympathy to family and friends on your tragic loss, a young life taken way before it's lived and enjoyed what life has to offer.

3 people have lost their lives whilst fishing from the rocks in just over 2 weeks. What can be done to stop this tragic loss of lives whilst fishing.

Snook or Pike

My Grandfather had a shack on whitford beach from just after the second world war till they had to pull them down (late 70s i think) Amongst the more prized fish there was a long fish 2 to 3 feet long with sharp teeth & a protruding lower jaw that they used to troll for in the shallows just off whitfords point (now called Pinnaroo point)  There was a smaller similar looking fish also that was considered an undesirable catch. The bigger fish was called a pike & the smaller fish was called a snook. My mother having spent many holidays at whitford says that pike was one of her favorite eating fish. Quite a statement considering the more common catches of groper & dhuies etc

I spent many childhood holidays there too

Yesterday for the first time at Mandurah I caught one of the fish they called a pike- 62 cm. 'Dont tell my mother that i used it for bait'.  Looking at the fish ID on this site, i see that its the other way around. The big fish is a snook. So either the old fisherman had it arse about or the names have changed - in WA at least (seems more likely)

Anyway - has anyone eaten a snook? The guide says they are very good eating so maybe my mother had it right all along.

Reminiscing - what got you hooked?

I caught up with the old boy today and we started talking about organising another trip to Shark Bay in the next year or two. We started reminiscing on our first trip up there together when i was still a young fella, only about 12 years old at that time. He went and dug up some old photos from the trip to show me. Theres many a good story from that 2 week trip but ill just show u a few pics of my first real fish. This is what got me hooked on fishing!

High speed trolling lures suggestions?

 Hey all

just after people's suggestions and thoughts on what trolling lures- if any- work well in rough(ish) seas at around 15-18knots?

Obviously the intention is to use them to pass the time a bit when I'm out and about in choppy seas and can't travel any quicker

I know there's the lead headed skirt option (haven't played with them personally but the good ones seem pretty pricey so would be interested to hear from people that have?)  and have tried towing Halco Max and Sebile Bongo jerks but they don't seem to go as well as reported...

when there's some chop, I guess logic says something that sits a bit deeper would help keep its action, more visible to any pelargics you might run over on the trip there/ home, but even the best with a bib like that usually starts blowing out well before that sort of speed. Hence the condundrum I guess but I'm sure someone must have invented something to do the job surely?

Suggestions/ opinions/ experiences of anything that can hold well at those speeds in sloopy(ish) conditions would be greatly appreciated

cheers!

Mustang half cabin

 Hi gang.

Looking at buying another boat. Was going to buy another Voyager LTD but all the ones for sale at the moment are disappointing (compared to the one I sold a few months ago).  Im now looking at a Mustang 17ft half cabin with a 90hp yammy 2 stroke. Boat, motor and trailer seems to be in quite good condition.

I would like to hear peoples' opinions on the build quality and ride of old style Mustangs? Also what to look for when inspecting them?

The reason for going half cab is so the missus and my young daughter can have some protection from the elements.  We'll mainly be using the boat for Matilda Bay and inshore ocean fishing (Ocean Reef & Hillarys).

Thanks in advance!

Light beach reel

Hey guys I'm looking at buying light beach reel I'm thinking a stradic fj 5000 as I do like them but have seen the penn battle 2 and conflict 4000 which are about same weight but a lot cheaper was wondering if any one has used them and if they a really cheaper in build it will go on a 3 to 6 kg 10ft rod for whiting herring tailor or salmon if they take the bait lol thanks for any help

Broome fishing options

Hey all heading to Broome Tuesday for 5 days and chasing some advice for some fishing options not to fussed about doing a charter for any reef fish or sailys. More keen on flicking some stickbaits off a beach or jetty or something like that

Spare Spools

Im after a spare spool or two for a few Daiwa's - Saltiga 4500, Catalina 5000H (although i doubt the H has any bearing on the subject) and possibly the same for a Salty Surf - any ideas on where they can be purchased. I've seen a few overseas ads in malaysia etc, but worried about reliability/reputability of vendors.

I got a quote from a bluewater store previously for ~$300 on the Catalina spool which I was of the opinion I may as well have bought another reel.

Any assistance welcomed

take it home with you

not agood look for fishos , so if you go fishing anywhere , take all your rubbish with you when you leave ,
have seen a fair bit of this type of thing over summer on the beaches south of here
you go down the beach early morning , and see camps with young blokes in swags waking up still looking hung over with burnt out fires , stubbies , plastic, busted gazebos, etc
then it all to often gets left behind

how hard is it to take it home ,
most do the righty, but the usual 5% dont, you can guess it is highly likly only a matter of time before some councils make proposals to bann us from fishing & 4 wheel driving

https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/27215145/meelup-users-leave-their-rubbish/

Meelup Regional Park Management Committee environment officer Mandy Polley says volunteers have noticed a correlation between the autumn fishing season and increased volumes of litter in the park.

Ms Polley told the _Times _ the recent Meelup Coastal Cleanups initiative had seen more than 200kg of rubbish removed from Meelup's beaches from December to Easter this year.

"Much of the rubbish left behind is fishing related, including bait bags and lines, and also fish body parts, as well as food and drink packaging," she said.

"There is also evidence of fires where people are cooking their catch."

Tangaroa Blue's Renee Mouritz agreed and said it was disappointing to see people destroy what they "came to enjoy".

Ms Polley said another bad season for litter was summer, when visitor numbers peaked.

"A lot of this is left behind by people camping, but also just general users of the beaches," she said.

"So you could say that for nearly half the year there is a significant litter problem in the park."

Ms Polley said the message for visitors to the park, or any natural area, is for people to clean up after themselves.

She said people could even pick up other rubbish to "keep the place clean".

"We want to keep it beautiful for everyone to enjoy," she said.

Reel Advice

Hi Guys,

I am looking at upgrading some of my gear from the standard Penn Spinfisher rod reel combos and am after some advice as to what would best suit me.

I am looking for a bit of an all round offshore spinning reel to take up north as well as to use around Mandurah and the metro area.

Up north I will be using the reel for a variety of different fishing from bottom bouncing up to 100m, casting at tuna schools etc to chasing sambos at home as well as dhus out wide.

I don't want to go the whole hog and pay for a stella or saltiga and am looking more in the price range of $400 - $600. Has anybody used the Shimano Biomaster or Saragosa Reels? If so, what are your thoughts?

Any advice about reels and sizes would be appreciated!

Current

Was out past direction bank yesterday and around 11 no wind but the current was ripping. Drifting over a knot, couldn't hold bottom and the fish shut down.

Anyone else out there yesterday experience this?

Does the current tend to shut down the fish or was this just coincidence?

Was a magic day on the water none the less
