Shallow Sambo Jigging
Submitted by JohnF on Sun, 2012-08-19 18:04Headout with Kane on his Trophy for a day as a deckie. I really enjoy the odd deckie spot as opposed to normally skippering my tug and this was no exception.
We all just wanted an arm stretching, so a day of jigging up sambos was the target. Kane supplied the boat, I supplied the sambo spots, and off we went early this morning. Apart from a terrible little Humingbird GPS/Sounder (soon to be replaced) the Trophy was excellent and rode really well.
First spot just as the sun popped its head up in 35 m, I went with PE2 gear, Kane and Troy PE3 and PE4. Secd drop, I land a nice skippy released. Next drop, bang, MUCH bigger.........no stopping this beast on PE2, and I was duly bricked for my troubles...........I grabbed the PE3 outfit, drop, crank, bang, on, and another big model gave me plenty on PE3. Not a bad shallow water sambo.
With the sounder being prety well useless and things going quiet, it was decided to head off to some deeper spots, and pretty soon 3 way hookups were the norm, with us landing plenty of small sambos on light gear. Great fun. Troy, who had never jigged before, got 4 fish in 4 drops, ncluding this little Amberjack. He was amazed how hard the little ambers go.
Kane got the 8lb bream gear out, but after 2 drops for 2 lost jigs, decided that was a bad idea! Back to PE3.....
Then me and Kane both hookup, and after a few minutes, my line goes slack and lost my fish and jig.....bugger!!!! Kane then complains his fish just got bigger.......huh.....then up cmes a double header for Kane, but on 2 jigs! My jig had been hooked by Kanes jigs, snapped my line, and then Kane brought it all in. Kanes fish fell off as he went to land it, but mine was stll there, on my purple jig....wierd.
On the way home we had another shallow jig, and landed a small dhu released, followed by the likely fish of the day. After about a minute on PE3, it bricked me, suspected donkey dhu as there were no big sambo runs, just heavy, short powerful spurts until he found his hole.
We ended up hooking a LOT of fish, only landed around half, and lost a lot of jigs, but had a ball!
Cheers Fellas.

Wilbinga Access
Submitted by buschy on Sun, 2012-08-19 18:01Hi all,
Heading up there next weekend for a short session with a few mates. Hopefully the weed situationi is not too bad.
I'm not going to have a chance to do a reccy, and as we are arriving before sunrise I wan't to make sure we don't hit any dead ends. I know I can get in via the grove reststop - does anyone know if you can get in via Wabling Rd or whether this is gated?
Cheers,
Buschy

Submitted by Colesy on Sun, 2012-08-19 11:57Has any one had any experience with these two guides, I cant fly fish but would love to get out on the water for some serious shallow water popping and plastic fishing on the westside. It would be a once in a lifetime trip for me and dad want to suprise him for his birthday.

Todays success
Submitted by Nickk on Sat, 2012-08-18 20:08Had a fair bit of success today fishing many spots ranging from D9 to garden island and beyond, total score was 10 sized skippy, bucket loads of baby whiting, way too many butterfish and cod. was a pretty good morning, was up a 5 at the boat at 6 and in the water by 630, first drop earnt us a double header of skippy and the other 3 fishos hooked up almost at the same time, we were getting nailed by sambos while bringing the skippy up to the boat but didnt manage to hook any after using a wide range of baits through to rigs, saw schools of pinkies but unfortunately no sized ones were landed, if anybody has any tips to hooking up on sambos or pinkies please comment as i am dying to get a really decent fight :)
the photo shows the skippy we ended up keeping, biggest was 58cm but he went back in and so did the rest after these lot were pulled up in the first 10 minutes
Cheers guys!! ended up being a great day on the water

ffb saturday
Submitted by Redemperor000 on Sat, 2012-08-18 15:54Hey everyone, been doing a bit of reaserch on here about fishing the ffb. found some great info so decided today would be the perfect day to go out. been out there previous weeks with only a breaksea cod being caught. went out about 7 and found a decent peice of ground set anchor and started with the burley. plan was to stay there all morning and keep the burley going. started slow with pickers destroying every bait that went down. was wrasse everywhere in the burley trail til about 9 then they just went quiet and knew this was the chance to get into decent fish. after a bit i managed to land very big sgt baker. was thinking of heading closer to the island coz my seasikness was kicking in when just after i landed a nice breaksea cod, we decided to stay a bit longer. roughly 10 minutes after that my bait was smashed and started taking line. set the hooks and not long after my first decent metro snapper came aboard. was very happy, turned out to be a good morning which flattened off completely, the pinkie measured 55cm and a bit over 2kg.

What is the Stella 4000 comparison in Daiwa
Submitted by Braxi on Sat, 2012-08-18 12:27Just looking at getting a Stella 4000 for barra fishing but just want to see what else is out there before I lay out so much hard earned cash. I have only heard great things about the stella and its ongoing performance. I havent heard too much about a Daiwa equivalent. Im sure that there are many out there that are Daiwa biased and Shimano biased. Im just looking for an awsome reel that will catch me fish after fish and remain trouble free. In laying out the money involved in the cost of a Stella you would expect minimal to no dramas. Any assistance is appreciated. The waters getting warmer by the day so they should be back on the chew soon.
Cheers.

BE ADVISED
Submitted by scubafish on Sat, 2012-08-18 10:18Scubafish, Hello guys & gals! New to the Fishwrecked Family "so be nice. "
Just wanting it to be known first up that" I'AM NOT A POACHER OF PEOPLES FISHING SPOTS " I have my own from years of fishing. Will be on the water hillarys 800-830 with (Ulablaster the Decki ) ,Ocean reef 118 Call sign or Channel 72 on (27 meg )" Scubafish". Anyone wishing to to join me in convoy may do so, if for nothing eles but safety in numbers it's a big ocean, we dont have to fish in the same spots but close by. Leeman is still fresh in my mind and we should learn from it to avoid any Government changes like life jackets must be worn at all times on the water. I would like to still have the option to or not to."STAY TOGETHER & STAY SAFE" .

Fishing: FLW Outdoors Foxtel
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Sat, 2012-08-18 07:05Watching tv this morning early while getting acclimatised to Sydney/Australian Time again after 5 months in Canada and founf the FLW outdoors 2011 wrap up on fox. Im a bit surprised to see these guys using 60-80lbs braid and outfits to land 10lbs fish and talking about fishing during the spawning times.
What do you guys think about the sport fishing aspect of this type of fishing? Is it sports fishing to be using 60-80lbs braid to fish in weeds, casting 3-4 mts from the boat and then virtually hoik the fish clean into the boat rather than using a net? Then putting them into live tanks for display at weigh ins, then at the weigh in, holding live fish from the mouth or gills for the appreciation of the crowd?
What about fishing during the known spawning times for Bass?
Also the River Monster guy using some huge outfits to catch rare/endangered species ?

boat fishing this weekend - what/where
Submitted by robert1979 on Fri, 2012-08-17 14:20Hi, planning to take the boat out one day this weekend to do some fishing. Have really done very little (boating and fishing) so wondering if anyone had some suggestions on what to target and where? Obviously not looking for lats/lons just just rough areas and what species to go for. Nothing too adventurous and not wanting to head very far out, just a relaxing day on the water and hopefully a few fish.
cheers,
Rob

Fishers Having A Win Maybe.
Submitted by Howard George on Thu, 2012-08-16 18:22A few years ago now Forrest Beach south of Bunbury was closed off to vehicles by a local landowner who erected a fence extending down the beach into the water and today I found out that he has been given 14 days to remove the fence because he only owns the land to the" high "water mark and from the high water out three nautical miles is state owned so the fence is not legal. The local Shire council from what I can gather doesn't have duristinction either. If that applies in the Capel Shire Council it must be the same along the rest of the coast line including Binningup Beach. I've got the local Abc radio presenter in Bunbury who has the morning programme to find out whats the go and looks like being on tommorrow at 10 o'clock. I'm just wondering why it's taken two years for him to be told to pull it down. Maybe we'll find out tomorrow.

Tips on Sp's plz
Submitted by Zoggy84 on Thu, 2012-08-16 09:18Hiya guys,
Just after some tips on the use of soft plastic from landbased.
What size jig heads and Plastics shld i stick to from the shore. The gear i use is a light rod with 9lb mono. Do i attach a leader, if so how lol. Im not to sure on the retrival but recently ive been doing a slow wind with a rod flick every now and again. Seems to work a little but i wanna kno any other ways. I mainly fish in the marinas or off the beach at Quinns so if beach fishin i normally go bait or a popper (no luck on popper yet).
Also i have seen Sp's in shape of a crab how the hell u rig that 1 up worm, grub and minnow seem easy enough but the other good looking 1's seem alot of trouble getting right.
Thanks for any info u may give, Appreciate it.
