Mulloway weight
Submitted by tombstone on Mon, 2012-08-06 22:02Hi Guys,
got a question for those in the know, a few years back caught a horse Mulloway (have pics somewhere) but wanted to know if there was a way to get a rough weight by knowing the length of the fish, it measured 172cm, i had some trouble holding him up for a photo, so was just wondering if anyone knows what weight he/she would have gone.
Cheers.

Any Tips for catching Saily's
Submitted by Braxi on Mon, 2012-08-06 15:03G'day,
Im not in the comp this weekend, stuck working through till midweek. Sounds like the good time of year to chase them though. I havent caught one yet. We had one come up under the boat and have a look at us when we were bottom bashing. And Ive seen some cruise under the wharf at work. Just never had the luck of hooking one. Are there any particular depths, trolling speeds, trolling ground (reefy or flat bottom), lures/skirt colours that are better to try? Ive kown a few people to hook them from floating a gardie/mulie out the back when drift fishing. Might try to get out thursday or friday while the winds not too bad. Its torture looking at the flat seas from work all day though and then getting to days off and it blowing up. Hope the calm seas hold on for a couple more days.
Cheers.

Reef anchor problems
Submitted by AlwaysFishin on Mon, 2012-08-06 08:54After snagging my anchor while fishing the inshore reef systems on Friday night I had to cut the rope. The anchor I had wasn't a reef anchor by any stretch, but never had any problems holding on and always came up, except for Friday night of course. So I went and got myself a reef anchor, a 5 prong 10mm version. And here my problem begins..
Went out Sunday morning targetting the same reefy terrain and for the life of me, I couldn't get the anchor to hold. Was on the water at 5.30 am for an early start and spent more time rooting around with the anchor, pulling and setting it trying to get it to grab, than what I did fishing. While conditions weren't perfect, there was about a 10-12knot ne wind and about a 1.5-2m swell, I didn't think it was rough enough to be causing my anchor to release hold. Also my boat is a 5.5 pacemaker which I didn't think was too heavy for that size anchor but I may be wrong.
Obviously I am going wrong somewhere but have no idea where or why. Can anyone help me out or point me in the right direction please?

flathead mandurah estuary
Submitted by meglodon on Mon, 2012-08-06 01:10At mandurah there was a small jetty, this small jetty was known as dalrimple's jetty" if i remember rightly. from the jetty i used to catch quite large dark coloured flathead when i would come down at easter timesthis was way back in the late 50s perhaps early 60s. Fast forward to 2000 when i moved down to mandurah i have not seen or heard of anyone catching flathead or flounder in the estuary, yet there is plenty of small flathead to be caught within 1nm of the ocean end of the cut. can anyone tell me if they have caught flathead in the esturay in recent years, like the last 5 or so.
Can anyone say why this is so,or is it i'm just not fishing in the right spots
. thanks in anticipation for replys

Boat rod advice
Submitted by joycey on Sun, 2012-08-05 21:55Hi guys, bit of advice please.
Recently bought a boat and will be doing fishing around metro area out to Rotto.
Looking to buy a general boat rod to get me going that would suit a bit of everything (bottom fishing, jigging and trolling)
My main questions are :
1. PE 1-3 or 3-5 ?
2. Overhead or spin? ( I already have a 4500 and 5000 spin reel )
So far liked the look of the Fishing WA rods.
Cheers,
Joycey.

Improved FG Knot - Using Crutches
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Sun, 2012-08-05 15:41For all of those blokes like me who have trouble with fumble fingers trying to get this knot perfect I have found the solution!!!!! My crutches make great fingers! I can firmly secure the biminie braid to the crutches. The trick is that I hold and control the leader bit and the missus holds the cructches and slowly criss-crosses them until I say STOP LOL. It would take a third person to video this unique idea but I can tell you with every degree of confidence that we have renewed wind-on leaders for 2 of my setups now and both knots are perfect. Missus winges a bit but hey, that's what they are there for. LOL

Boat trailer ideas
Submitted by Wannafish on Sat, 2012-08-04 17:36Hi All,
In the next couple of weeks I am going to start making an off-road boat trailer for my 1982 5m Quintrex Cerntre console. I want to license it for 1.5T on a single axle as it is well over 1T when loaded up to go fishing / camping / spearing up north. I also mostly launch across the beach and regularly go to Ningaloo, Lucky Bay, etc so it needs to be good across the beach and be able to survive corrugations. So far I am thinking of the following, but would love to hear ideas and suggestions, and see pictures of other trailers built for similar use.
100 x 5 'C'section frame
75 x 5 'C' section cross beams
Full width slides going down to the rollers
100 x 100 x 4 RHS draw bar
Landcruiser hubs, wheels, bearings (15" with 235/75 or 225/70 tyres)
Mechanical Disc brakes
45mm square axle - wheels to be same width as the car track
9 leaf x 60mm x850 long double eye offroad leaf springs
Chequer plate mudguards
TREGG offroad poly-block hitch
Spare on a hub mounted to a drop down arm (on the drawbar) to turn it into a 3 wheeler
LED lights
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated before I spend the $ on buying the bits - expecting to to be around $2700 to build
Thanks heaps
Drew

What would you do
Submitted by johnno67 on Sat, 2012-08-04 17:06Not going to name and shame but took my shimano reel into a tackle store north of the river to get a service in may for our annual may Gnaraloo fishing trip and also dropped another $1700 on fishing gear while I was there.
Ok got to Gnaraloo in may our first day out in the 100 meter mark first drop and I was on to a nice 9kg job fish with my fully serviced reel. yep guess what happens next drag adjusted to full and had no drag very minimal had to pull the fish up by hand shit that braid hurts using it as a hand line. No more fishing for me that day as I didn't have another reel on the boat capable of fishing the 100s. Got back to the cabin and did a strip and inspection of the reel and found that some washer were left out of the star drag so it just bottomed out.
Got back to Perth in may and dropped it off to the tackle store that did the service, it is now august and have not got it back. have been into the store seven times and have had every excuse under the sun. boss hasn't been there, guys working there can't get hold of the boss . Go in last saturday and told don't know anything about it so I got the staff to get the boss on the phone finally and promises me it will be ready the next day Sunday.
Ok so I left it to wednesday to go in surely it would be ready guess what, no boss and the guy working just drew a blank face. so he tries to ring his boss no answer again. I left him my mobile told him to call me cause I'm real pissed off now. I just want my reel back .it's now Saturday no phone call and no reel, I'm sounding a bit bitchy but this is my no 1 fishing reel I think I might just have to go and help myself to a new one off the shelf.

Fish "Trading"??
Submitted by crasny1 on Sat, 2012-08-04 14:45Hi wreckers
This has been doing my head in, and hearing some stories just wondered whether I have this totally clear in my head.
It has been posted on here that certain Gray Nomad parked up in one off the caravan parks has been "trading" Mudcrabs for other stuff!!
Now I have also heard a rumour that cray trading has been going on.
Now I have this totally clear. If you catch a fish, cray etc with a Non Commercial Lic you are not allowed to sell to nobody ever. If you do you break the law.
And I believe that is the case for "Trading". Blatantly doing it IMO is illegal. The case I have heard about with the Mudcrabs was that he would trade crabs for other foods, the rumour with crays was that it was hardware etc in exchange for them.
My understanding is that if you gain any reward out off private disposal off seafood it is illegal - stop. So both the recipient and Trader are breaking the law. And the Arrangements that the rumour revealed pisses me off no end.
But if you come over to my place, give me some nice Red emp fillets, and a week later I feel kind and buy you some Burboun in appreciation --- where does that stand.
I gave some whole Snapper to our cleaning lady when we had extra. We dont freeze fish, dont normally take more than a fresh feed or 2, but pulled up some high quality fish after thinking the snapper was going to do. Had a couple extra. She makes deliscious Tom Yum. But a week later she brought me a carton of beer.
Now I have gained, she has gained. There was no agreement unlike to other 2 cases but how does this differ in theory from the obvious above.
It just had me thinking!!
Cheers

Coral Bay Fishing
Submitted by Sisterfish on Sat, 2012-08-04 14:34Hi,
I am thinking of heading up to Coral Bay to do some land based fishing and wondered if anyone can advise me on the best time of year to go.
Was hoping to go in the next few months but had read that it can be pretty blowy for the months that have an R in them :), dont know if this is true.
Also I generally run with 30lb line on a pretty basic set up and wondered if this is going to be enough.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
