Suggestions for fishing spots, North!

G'day guys. Myself and scottland have a booking on seasport this weekend, but with the current swell forecast at 5.5m, we are doubting if they will even go out.

Just looking for some suggestions for places to travel as an alternative - keeping landbased generally. hopefully North of J-Bay. Scott doesn't want to drive too far, being the lazy person he is haha. Ideally, i would like to go Quobba/exmouth, but that really isn't on the cards. How does Kalbarri fish on a high swell?

Blatant Spot Stealing

Whilst I understand that the ocean doesn't belong to me, I cannot believe the blatant spot stealing that was going on, on Saturday, off Mindarie. My brother has worked very hard to find good ground and has spent lots of hours working the around to see people drive within 10 metres of where you are fishing to Ping your spots left me feeling less than impressed.

This got even better when one boat load of guys came straight up to us, pinged the spot and then when we went up to ask them WTF! they said "we weren't fishing mate what's your Fuc=$ing problem". My problem, you dickhead, is that you should find your own spots or learn some ocean etiquette. If they had come up and said hi or even been half civilised the outcome might have been vastly different but their attitude , language and total bullshit story really had me fired up.

We took their Rego and a photo of the boat and I am still considering the name and shame as they clearly intended to go and steal everyones spots even though they "weren't fishing" with five rods, a sounder and bait??

There were several others that were circling like seagulls and triangulating the spots, clearly this is becoming the norm but it is piss poor in my opinion

What do you do, pull out the Shot gun and fire a warning across the bow, ram them and ruin your day or just suck it up and accept that some people clearly haven't learnt any respect. To their credit the others on the boat looked very sheepish but the skipper was being a right nob end

Anyone had a similar experience recently as i could not believe what i saw.

Cheers

Moray eel

Hey guys, was out last Thursday and we got a moray eel about a metre long! Do more people come across these and do people take them home to eat? My mates mum cooks them up but I didn't want the sly looking thing on the boat!

Drift baits

Was just wondering how people go about drift baiting. When sending the bait down do you leave the bail arm over for a while waiting for it to hit the bottom? flick the arm over and lift it a meter or so off the bottom?

Also fishing in around 10-20 meters of water wondered what size sinker is best, in say a slow/medium paced drift?

only new to this and didn't have much success with it over the weekend.. had 5 big squid hit the bait but dont think it was getting to the bottom.

Cheers,
Jamie

flares it has been confirmed

just had a bit of news from a reliable source that as from july 1 2013 DoT are introducing a new policy on flares,if you are found to be in possesion of flares that are out of date you will be liable to a fine of 250 bucks for having life saving gear that is out of date. I have expressed my view on this mad bad policy before on this web site and look forward to my first encounter with DoT on this issue It will be interesting to see on what basis they have brought in this change (it will interest the RAN as well)

It's chicken shit at it's best by people who have not the remotest idea what they are on about, nor the qualifications to make such decissions.

Another week closer to the finals and it's hotting up

OK so another week goes by and we resurect the footie chatter. Why not? It's panning out to be a scrap for both top four and the eight. I haven't seen a race like this for a while and I am enjoying it. One thing I do hate though is that there are so many weak teams that drop off and offer easy pickings. Final placings this year depend on the draw and who has the fortitude to defy the critics and the odds.

Being WA I am keen to see the Eagles come back strong and it will be interesting to see how the Dockers come home. Bring on next week I say. If the Dockers choke that could be it. If they do well then the Eagles are in for a tough run in the finals (not that it won't be tough even if they win).

The Hawks are on a role but that can be stopped at any stage.

GO EAGLES!!!!

Moon Phase Clock

Does any one know where I could buy a moon phase clock? I have seen a couple on the web but can't find anyone here who even knows what i'm talking about, let alone advise where I might find one. I would like to hang on on the wall in my study as it seems like a useful & novel instrument to me. I dont know why people are so baffled by my request. Presumably the hand would turn one revolution every 29 1/2 days or there abouts. maybe I'm wrong. Any way, any ideas?

Still Learning

Went out yesterday with the family as usual and had a few drifts around the five fathom, a few weeks back managed to grab a dhui and a little mixed bag.

Yesterday was fairly quite for us and managed a couple of fish, one fish which we boated I was sure was a shite fish as in my mind it looked like a painted sweetlip that was in the forum earlier in the week.

The fish looked like it would be good eating, the camera wasnt on board and the mobile was swithched off, I wanted to take a photo so when I came home I could look up the fish and ID it.

I dont like to take something and kill it unless I know what it is and well I think it was a long tail perch, which according to fishwrecked fishapedia isnt to bad on the chew. BUGGER

Like I say it looked like a nice fish and all, I couldn't see a black mark on its ass and well being new to boating and the variety of fish you catch erred on the side of caution.

Also just wondering apart from the little fish ID guide from fisheries is there any other guide to help while your out there to ID fish, or is it just a live and learn thing. Experience over time>

Other than that a nice day on the water..

why so many sambos?

so ive just been been givin a boat as a gift. i know hey, that never bloody happens. been out everyday of my spare time only to keep finding sambos. i just want a bloody feed of fresh fish but every spot i try is loaded with these bastards. think i have a sambo curse or something, anyone got any ideas? depths, jigs, baits? i dunno wat is goin on is it just me or wat?

Boat ramps for Alkimos?

Have heard from my usual deckie that his brother in law is building in Alkimos.

He reckons they are putting in decent boat ramps there.

Anyone heard this before?

we are all on our own! message from the government regarding great whites

http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/you-are-all-on-your-own/story-e6frg12c-1226437673482

SWIMMERS should take more responsibility for keeping themselves safe from sharks, according to a Government report.

And authorities get annoyed that their efforts to educate the community often fall on deaf ears because people think they are "shark experts" when they're not.

For instance, the idea of a rogue shark that has developed a taste for human blood is unfounded.

A Department of Fisheries internal report gives a rare insight into the Government's opinions on the record spate of shark attacks off our coast.

Two weeks ago 24-year-old surfer Ben Linden became the fifth person to be killed by a shark in WA in 10 months when he was attacked off Wedge Island.

The deaths have prompted Fisheries to develop a campaign to ease fears among swimmers.

The Sunday Times obtained a report summarising a Fisheries workshop on campaign priorities.

Under the headline "What are we trying to achieve?", it said: "People need to accept responsibility."

Under the headline "Issues", it said: "Must focus on desire is for the public to have a realistic understanding of interaction with the marine environment, particularly in relation to sharks."

The document also said: "Irrespective of whether they are (or not), everyone thinks they are shark experts makes education difficult."

Fisheries Minister Norman Moore said the points raised during the workshop were not a "government position", but they were "not inconsistent with what Government is seeking to achieve through the community engagement strategy".

The report quotes data presented during the workshop by shark scientist Rory McAuley which said there had been 121 shark attacks in WA since 1893.

According to the Australian Shark Attack File, 62 per cent of these resulted in no injuries or minor injuries. Sixteen per cent of attacks were fatal.

Mr McAuley told the workshop that the "rogue shark" theory that the predators liked to prey on humans and had a taste for our meat was not supported by evidence.

It said victims of attacks were rarely eaten and that attack locations were separated by up to thousands of kilometres.

"Definition of a rogue shark includes two assumptions that there is a benefit to the shark in targeting humans and that these animals exhibit some level of residency," the report said.

"(This is) unsubstantiated opinion based on no evidence."

Mr McAuley told the workshop that data for assessing shark numbers, particularly great whites, in the state was "extremely limited".

Accurate analysis is complicated because scientists are unsure of the patterns of shark-population growth

HMM LETS JUST SAY ITS THERE FAULT SO WE DONT HAVE TO SPEND ANY MONEY FIXING THE PROBLEM!! typical bloody government

Another swan fish kill

Yes, again. A mate was out yesterday & found lots of dead fish through the maylands/ascott area. There's an online article in the Herald Sun if anyone is interested, yet another algal bloom apparently. This is the third one this year I believe. Things not looking good for the Swan.

??? NW Blowies still around

Had a great solo session in 44 metres yesterday bagging out very early however I changed tactics seeking to catch either a whiskery or gummy only to loose a number if rigs to clean bite offs ............has any seen any NW Blowies of recent times or any ideas on what could snip rigs whilst barely vibrating the rod

Cali Squid where to buy early morning on way to two rocks?

Hi guys of north to two rocks in the morning with a mate to hunt for some dhuies in the morning early.

Was that busy at work today I didn't get a chance to pick up some squid from our mates at Oceanside. Anyone know of any servos on the trip that sell decent squid for bait? Early Saturday mornings. Looking at leaving the metro area about 5 ?

Cheers in advance
