WA Barra Charters - Broome

Hey all,

Has anyone been out with Adam at WA Barra Charters before? Up in Broome in a couple of weeks time and have booked a creek trip, hopefully get some Barra and Threadies.

Just interested in others' experiences - operates a Stabi for the creeks so that should go well.

Cheers

Where to fish

Hi all Wednesdays weather looks nice and calm in the evening so I am considering taking my son to the D9. I am a little worried about how many boats are going to be there and if I would be better off trying somewhere less busy. I know it's a wierd question but just looking for opinions either way.

GME MT406G EPIRB Battery Replacement

 Hi

My GME406G EPIRB purchased from Whitworths is due for battery replacement - when purchased it came with a "free" battery replacement once the original one has expired.

Has anyone gone through the "free" battery replacement process with GME?

How did it go?

How much did freight cost and who did you use?

How long did the process take?

Not sure whether to go down the replacement battery route or just bight the bullet and by a new one???

Thanks

man killed by a flying spanish mackeral

 https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-08-15/nt-fish-launches-into-boat-off-darwin-killing-56-year-old-man/12562100

Many a near miss with these things whilst GT fishing over the years. Flying over the boat, a few glancing blows and a few evasive manouvers to avoid being hit. A tip for anyone stick baiting or popping with these things around do not wind in the last 10 to 15m of your retrieve with the rod in direct line to the lure and you. Turn it to the side as this is where the drama can happen particularly if you increase your retrieve speed near the boat. 20kgs of mackeral spearing out of the water directly at you is not a good thing.

Finally got myself a snapper

I finally caught myself a snapper after putting in many many hours over the last 2 months. Until last night I have seen snapper caught from the boat next to me, I've snapped braid when I had a good run because I'd lost the liner from the top tip and didn't know it to countless runs and bights that didn't connect. Then last night as I was cubing up some mulie's one of my rods took off on a blistering run, I grabbed the rod and could feel the head shakes and tightened the drag as it was probably abit lighter than I realised, the fish put up a good fight it was going really hard got him to the surface and was stoked to get the net under it first go, I finally got my first inshore snapper. Fished for another 40 mins but no more runs but was absolutely stoked. Fish went 70cm.

Walpole

Hi All

I'm heading down to Walpole this weekend, taking the tinnie and was planning to do some bream fishing up the Franklin and maybe target some bread and butter stuff around the mouth. Given the rain forcast through the week and now looks to increase on the weekend, am I wasting my time? Any info on how much that river runs after heavy rain and what section of the river/estury the fish generally move to would be much appreciated. If its going to be a waste of time i'll leave the boat at home.

Cheers

Recfish to test shark repellent devices

I’m sure you all saw the email, this should be really interesting, hopefully resulting in more sustainable fishing

recfishwest.org.au/news/scientists-get-their-teeth-into-shark-bite-off-study/

After being hammered by sharks up at coral bay for the last 2 weeks we were discussing setting up a shark shield for bottom bashing ourselves, has anyone actually tried it? Bit of info on their website sounds like they're confident it works

4x4 tyres

 Hi folks, chasing some advise.

Purchased a vehicle with 20" rims and i would like to put some A/T tyres on it.

I know people say get rid of em and put 18's on but that would mean buying 5 new wheels, cladding them with rubber and having 5 20" in the shed doing nothing.

Has anyone changed out their 265/50R20's for say BFG's 275/55R20's.

If so or you know of someone that did, how do they go and is there any problems.

It means i get a bigger sidewall to play with lowering the pressure for the beach and a slightly wider tyre.

Your opinions will be appreciated as usual.

cheers.

Shack life

Was just thinking the other day about when an old mate of mine had a shack north of Leeman in the mid 90's. I owned a Pacemaker Calais back then which was an awesome boat.

Being a bit of a Tarzan back then me and my mate would head out bottom bouncing for Dhuies all day before an arvo dive for crays. We'd head out in a sou wester no probs as long as the swell was ok. These were some of the best days of my life up there, there were hardly any boats fishing that area so we always nailed big bags of fish.

We used to run a wing of net out each night and bag heaps of big Mullet, herring and Skippy.

Another fave pastime was spearing Cobbler along the beach there at night with the gidgy, skinned and pan fried nothing could beat it.

One particular day after smashing the ocean and sitting up on the hill late arvo sucking beers and having green rollie ;) we watched a dinghy float past heading for Madagascar. Old mate came out of the shack and said to us salvage rights for that if you're keen.

Looking at my mate with a grin appearing said F^%k yeah! So half cut we swam out to my boat which was moored, at this time the sea breeze was a howling 25-knots + so we were knackered by the time we climbed on board . Anyway it tooks us about 3 or 4 km's before we caught up to the dinghy. Tied it on , dragged it back and beached it.

In the meantime the owner of said dinghy showed up at the shack telling us he saved his boys arses,  they'd beached it after fishing and hadn't dragged it out properly. He knew that the boat was absolutely lost if we hadn't of picked it up and I wasn't going to be a prick about salvage rights etc.

So he said what do you want? Two x 1L bottles of Jim Beam was the order, No probs mate and brought them around a couple of hours later.

Enjoyed getting sideways that night lol. It's the old thing we might've needed him for something down the track later so it was a good deal.
It was a shame in the end to have to pull the shack down, The shire was happy with $500 a year lease fees but CALM stuck it's nose in and demanded they go.

Another  mate of mine used to bring a spud mortar up there that we'd fire off into the ocean, I just told to fire the Farken thing away from my boat.

Ahhhh shack life, loved it.

Keen to hear of anyone else that experienced shack life back in the day. Or still has one.

Bell Viper Winch

Looking to pull the trigger on a drum winch after giving up all hope for an electric motor due to the extra cost of boat mods required.

Does anyone have a Bell Viper and been happy with it? Not sure if I can justify the additional $500-600 for a Lone Star.

Cheers JF

New to fishing and WA

 Hey there,

Absolute noob to fishing here and I'm trying to look for some guidance. I've just moved to WA as an international student and have always enjoyed fishing with my godparents back home, so was looking to pursue the hobby a little more here. Recently got a rod and a other equipment but haven't found much success (unless you count blowies) at places like Hillarys, Narrows, Claremont Jetty and the Moles in Freo.

Just wanted to get some tips on preventing snagged as I've been donatin hooks everywhere I go and I hate doing that cause of the damage to the environment. Tried paternoster rigs but still been donating.

I'm inclined to fish off piers and jetty (where legal) as I friend of mine was swept out to sea after being hit by a freak wave so a little fear of going too low on the rocks. However, piers and jetties I've went to are full of blowies even at night, which makes it tough to fish with bait. I've tried frozen bait (gets stolen), soft plastics (blowies bite through them) and squid jigs (haven't found any luck). Am inclined to try hard plastics/metals but am hoping to learn how to prevent snags before investing in these lures! Would love to use live bait but you can't use what you can't catch! I've also read that lures aren't as good in winter cause there fish are a little more sluggish so I've used bait more, with burley and fish oil but still come up with nothing so any help here (from locations to bait) would be great - I've heard people say upriver is better whilst most swear by downriver so it's confusing.

I'm also unsure about windy/choppy conditions, high/low pressure, before/during/after storms as all the articles I've read have come up with differnet opinions (I assume due to their different success on the waters). Could any experienced peep here enlighten me in this area?

I know it's a lot I'm asking so any little bit would help! I'm not asking for secret spots or expecting to catch a feed everytime I go fishing, just a little help in getting started and clearing up the hours of research I've put in. I'm willing to invest reasonably to improve, but will probably try to make do with what I have at the moment. Thanks for all the help in advance, it's just been incredibly frustrating, embarrassing and expensive the past few weeks.

Places I'm looking to try out when I've got the time: sandbar @ point walter, sheds @ freo, south mole squid, bicton baths, scout hall jetty or thereabouts.

baby sword

Got to be carefull what you wish for. First crack at a day time sword and was hoping for a small one that would fit in the kill bag and 15min later had a mini sword on board. Going to wish for a big one next time so let this one go to become a sea monster.

Rottnest Hotel Jetty Pens - mooring arrangements

 Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone has had experience using the hotel jetty pens at Rotto. We have some accommodation booked in October and if the weather is good are looking at taking a 5.2m ally runabout over, and with kids on board it would be good to have a guaranteed pen near the hotel.

I have looked on the Rottnest website and understand how to book, location of pens etc but they are fairly vague as to mooring arrangements for the pens aside from noting that we would need to bring our own lines.

So, hoping that a fishwrecked member has used these before and has any tips, or even better some pics for over there.

Failing that the beach mooring system seems simple enough but a little bit further away for the guaranteed spots...

Many thanks in advance,

Vincent

Spring tides at montebello islands

 Gday guys

Well the plan is to head to the monties in a couple weeks weather permitting looking at launching on the 21st and head over for 5 days camping on one of the islands looks like it might be hard work to find a good Anchorage close to shore so we dont have to swim to far in.

Are we better off trying to sleep on the boat so we can anchor in deeper water.

Cheers

Old Humminbird died

 Hi Guys

The old trusted Humminbird has lost the plot! GPS I think shat itself.

I dont go out very deep and was thinking purely because I am so used to this by replacing it with a Humminbird Helix 5 or 7.

Maybe the deepest I would fish now would be 40m out from Mandurah and the odd trip up north.

Any comments on the Helix range would be appreciated. Dont look bad on the net but would prefer users comments.

Cheers

Exmouth in late September

 Gday guys

Im looking at taking a 6m boat and the family to Exmouth in late september. We have been down that way a few times but not at that time of year. Just wanted to see if anyone thinks it's worth towing a boat all the way there or is the weather not going to be too friendly for boating. Any feedback or advice would be great.

Cheers

New outboard recommendations/ advice 140-150HP

 Hi Guys,

I am currently doing a bit of research as I am thinking of re-powering my boat in the near future.

At this stage I am wanting a 140-150hp (Still tossing up brands) and just wondering what experiences you have had good/ bad.

I understand the boat show is coming up (if it goes ahead) and that there is often deals that vendors will have but I still want to get an idea of what others have paid etc. in the meantime.

If you are willing, can you drop me a PM and let me know things such as brand, price, warranty, fitting, finance, extras and who supplied.

Cheers.
