new to site, and wa fishing
Submitted by bourbon on Sun, 2011-03-20 00:37Hi all, had a great read of some posts, made a few comments [hope thats ok]. Came over from qld 18mths ago and only just found a fishing site that has fisherman that concentrate on the concept, not throw shit at one another, as another that i have monitored for bout 3 months. Look forward to some good fishing tales, and possible mates that share a common interest. Do most of fishing[without much succes] from my boat, but struggle to come to terms with good ground. So different from qld, where reef is unmistakable areas that are large, but close to shore, most within 20 mile of ramp. Not 30-50+ as appears to be the case here, and an area that a car bonnet would cover ! Mostly run out on my own, so if anyone would like to go for a fish, happy to take on board. Looking for "THE GROUNDS" constantly, without much success. {had a good nite on the beach recently, think maybe better to let the grass grow round the boat !} Live on south side, near Rocko, so anyone want to jump onboard for a fish [??!! love to catch a good one} is welcome. Have a carribean reef runner that i bought just after arriving here, but hardly used due to FIFO for the first 12 mths. Now work in local/country area, so have nore time to play. Some weekdays off, as with most w/ends, so keen to justify boat to Missus, and show some rewards. Cheers All, enjoy the deep blue.

placcy care help, as ours are mouldy
Submitted by spanishmackeral on Sat, 2011-03-19 21:29hey guys
well we havent been out for a placcy sesh for a couple of months as we have been super busy and i had a look at the plastics today and saw theyre all mouldy (presuming) ruined and stinky.
these 2 were the most ruined
and a close up of the worst (not even used as the end wasnt snipped off!)
we had about 8 placcys, half gulps and half squidgies in a plano waterproof container inside a plano waterproof tackle box (the clear ones with red trimmings) all of this mouldy stuff was on the gulps (the squidgies looked fine) but they all smelt like crap so i threw them out.
i used dizzys tournament gel the last time we used them and think thats the problem, has anyone else experienced this happening or is it just that gel?
the red and white gulp was never used so im dumbfounded to whats happened there.
im keen to hear any ways of caring for placcys as ive just bought some mcarthy placcys and dont want to have to chuck them all out.
generally if i can see the packet leacking i will chuck all its content in the container mixing new and old ones, is this bad? should i get another container and put the new ones in that, keeping them seperate from the used ones?
im keen to hear some feedback and hopefully it will hep others in prolonging placcy life.
cheers rob

Horrocks LB
Submitted by buschy on Fri, 2011-03-18 23:12Hi all,
Have officially given up on metro LB fishing after a very lean summer. Got spooled by a Landrover today and that has probably been the higlight of the last few months. Time to start planning my next adventure.
Was thinking about heading up to Horrocks in winter. Can anyone give me any tips or adivce for landbased fishing up that way? I guess my biggest concern is that I get there and it is weeded out...so anyone who knows what the weed is like up there...well your advice would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Buschy

Giant Herring info
Submitted by beau on Fri, 2011-03-18 20:37Is this the right time of year for giant herring? I was out in Cockburn Sound today on the ski where i spotted this school of about 15 fish hanging off the edge of a drop off that went from about 50cms of water down to 2m. They were light brown on top and shiny silver belly and very slender, some of the fish were around 60cms. I cast at this school of fish for over an hour and a half, had one hit on a 10g twisty and 3 hits on a 3in SP. Extreme tentative bites, just nicking the tail of the SP. They would chase everything i threw at them but rarely hit. Was probably the most frustrating fishing i have ever done. They didnt seem fussed by the ski at all, often swimming towards the me about 20cms from the surface then drifting down a couple meters away.
I couldnt work out what fish they were for a long time, then the fishing started reminded me of some fishing shows i had seen, where they were targetting bonefish on fly, and how frustrating the fishing was, then it clicked that you could chase GH on fly in the swan. Im 90% sure these were GH.
Is my only real chance of getting these fish on fly gear? Can anyone reccomend some lures for spinning gear?

Nice Consolation Prize - Dhu
Submitted by JohnF on Fri, 2011-03-18 19:13Went out for a troll for maccies with Chrisp today at Rotto. No luck on the mac front, but we got a nice little SBT in surprisingly shallow water. Perfect size for some sashimi.

Whilst trolling, we sounded some nice ground and decided to have a bit of a jig. Tried a few spots, and despite heaps of fish on the sounder, very little action. I got an undersized dhu and baker on a real jig, Chrisp used a pirate (cheater....haha) and got an undersized dhu as well and then a just legal 50.5 cm dhu that was in good nick, so we released him.
Then we moved and hit the jackpot............sounder lit up like a Christmas tree..............

Well, even with the full moon, poor tide and fish off the bite, this sort of flareup had to result in some sort of action. I got absolutely smoked on my new PE2 jig outfit, suspected sambo, although it felt very unusual and may have been something else.......will never know, as after about 5 minutes of struggle, it finally bricked me into the reef.
Chrisp followed suit, being bricked on PE3 pretty comprehensively.
I changed up to my PE3 gear, sent down a pretty large Fisheman Andaman, and BANG, on straight away. Fought very well and was expecting a small sambo, but up popped a nice 74 cm dhu.

Sorry about the piccie, Chrisp took some nice ones on the boat with a proper camera, have not got em yet. Took this with a poxy iphone at home.
Dropped again, hit again on Andaman, but bricked after I thought I was almost getting the upper hand......Chrisp was hit at the same time but landed his after a great fight. Nice Sambo (Chrisp has photos) but it went MUCH harder than it's size suggested.....I suspect sambos go much harder outside of spawning aggregation, as they actually have some food in their stomachs....
Re-rigged, I dropped a fanky, Chrisp a FCL lobo, and smash, smash......after a few minutes of strong sambo action, we both got sharked pretty badly........................Matt, on another boat nearby, yelled out he had 2 sharks under his boat, so we pulled stumps and had a troll, but no luck.
Stopped off at the Rotto pub for a beer and then a swim at transits on the way home to cap off an interesting day.
Just about to prepare some tuna sashimi and dhu on the BBQ. Happy days.
Cheers
John

Squid rod for 2.5s and under.
Submitted by danno on Fri, 2011-03-18 16:26Hey all.
Just wondering if there is a squidding rod that i can get local for smaller sized squid jigs say 2.5s and under. my budget is around the 250 at most. Ill most likely be matching it with a stradic 1000FI.
Is there any rods to suit those needs? ive used my egi force with smaller jigs but i would like a lighter model to use small jigs when i can.
Cheers Danno

C-MAP cards for navman 5100 in perth... Where to buy?????
Submitted by antisense on Fri, 2011-03-18 14:26I have an old navman 5100 but the C-MAP card is missing. Does anyone know where to buy these in Perth? I can't seem to find one for sale with maps anywhere and I've called heaps of boating and fishing shops, big and small and no-one seems to be able to point me in the right direction.
Is this GPS now useless?
So damn frustrated.

Dunsborough Advice
Submitted by slothwan on Fri, 2011-03-18 09:52Hi All,
I'm off to Dunsborough this weekend for a wedding but I was hoping to try out my new drop shot and flick a few lures about in the chance of picking up a stray salmon that are never/definitely showing up (depending on your opinion of course).
I don't know the area for fishing and was hoping for some advice on a few spots to try tomorrow morning before I suit up. I don't have 4x4 access.
Any advie would be greatly appreciated.

First catch
Submitted by fat bloke on Fri, 2011-03-18 09:24Ok i went and got some tackle and some bits and bobs, off i went looking for that monster bite.
I ended up at Quinns fishing off one of the man made rocky out crops, i fished to the side not the point has i wanted to fish across the in coming waves spinning my bait.
It was slow at first, but after about 20 minutes i started getting little tugs on my line, i noticed lots of seagull activity over head so that was a god sign of smaller fish in my location, i see it as smaller fish must mean bigger somewhere.
The first fish i caught was a whiting about 15cm long and of a good solid weight, about half a kilo.I was chuffed - so was these two young blokes fishing the otherside of point, one shouted over thats a specimen mate, what bait you using?
The second i have no idea to what it is, the two blokes had no idea either? I have looked on a couple of those specimen charts for western Australia on the net and all i can come up with that looked anything close to what i caught is the banded sweep fish, the only real difference is that my fish had no dark stripes just pure silver in colour with black tips to all fins and tail edges, it was a very pretty fish (none gay way) about the size of a medium dinner plate, and weighing around half a kilo.
Hope some one can help me sort this out, and next time i will be taking a camera or my phone atleast.
Oh and the bait i used...bread, bread molded around my red hook leaving the point showing and cast has far as i could cast it across the waves, then retreaved fast and slow, a bit like spinning i suppose.

New... Everything =)
Submitted by Little_Richo on Thu, 2011-03-17 19:55I went into Oceanside Tackle today with the intention of grabbing some lures and hitting the water this arvo (trying to get some bream or flathead). As it turns out I walked out with an empty wallet and a new Asaro reel with 8lb braid and a new 6'6" graphite rod. Unfortunately I only had time to fish for an hour around 2pm (which is not ideal). Had a few strikes and a little fight before it spat the lure but was still nice to have a line in the water. Hopefully I will be able to get something over the weekend or next week as I have a weeks break from uni.

Shore line fish?
Submitted by fat bloke on Thu, 2011-03-17 11:40Having walked the beach up at quinns and down at burns, i noticed a lot of fish darting about in small groups they averaged about 2/300mm in length and looked fairly plump in shape, a darkish colour to them just under the surface, any ideas to the species please? I understand it's probably hard without a photo.

Total Noob to this game
Submitted by fat bloke on Thu, 2011-03-17 10:28Hi everyone, great site firstly.
Ok, i am absolutely new to sea fishing never done it before, only sat and watched others casting out. New to the country also, i am from the UK. My questions are these:
I will be buying a mid priced rod/reel combo from Kmart to start off and a small selection of hooks and floats etc, my question is obvious really - what size/style of hooks do you all recommend, what floats if any or do i go for bottom fishing or is it a combinaton on the day?
I used to carp fish a lot back in the uk, but that was fresh water.
I will be going up to either Quinns rock area or down to Burns beach by the rocks, if any of you know the areas at all, and what should i expect to catch? Oh and whats a good bait to start off with.
Lots of nooby questions but i just want to wet my line and hopefully get some fish on the other end.
Thanks.

Bloody forecast - what will it be?!
Submitted by dkonig82 on Thu, 2011-03-17 09:30Contemplating a night fish tomorrow night, but the damned forecast is killing me!
Seabreeze is saying 11pm in Perth will be 18kn southerly, which wont be that pleasant.
Willyweather is saying SSW at 11pm of 4.3kn. Which if great.
Surely these websites dont each have their own monitoring stations everywhere, so presumably they are using the same data?
Who knows?!
