Barra fisherman fights off crocodile for 15 minutes
Submitted by bod on Thu, 2011-03-10 14:16

Fisherman Todd Bairstow, 28 years, arrives at Cairns Base Hospital late last night after surviving a 15-minute attack by a 4m crocodile in Weipa.
Todd Bairstow, 28, a Rio Tinto bauxite mine worker, was fishing on the banks of Trunding Creek near the Albatross Hotel when the huge crocodile lunged out of the water about 4pm yesterday.
The croc attack victim reportedly told Weipa Hospital staff he fought for his life with the 4m monster "for about 15 minutes" before locals heard his cries and ran to his aid to help drag him to safety.
He told medical staff how he desperately clung onto mangroves to prevent the big croc dragging him underwater for the deadly death roll.
He was taken to Cairns Base Hospital about 11.15pm where he is reportedly in a stable condition with the injuries described as non-life threatening.
Mr Bairstow, an avid fisherman, pig hunter and outdoorsman, told friends on Facebook how he was "living the dream'' in the wilderness of Cape York where big crocodiles are a familiar sight in creeks and waterways.
"Off to mow down some pigs after shift,'' he noted in his latest Facebook entry.
Another earlier entry he said he was off to a popular fishing spot known as Jurassic park to "slay some barra''.

Submitted by whipasswaverunner on Thu, 2011-03-10 12:55Hi all Fishos,
I am looking at getting some deck lights, and came across these on ebay.
Would these be ok? I have a rocket launcher which it can be attached too.
My deck space is 1500mm from front to back and aprox 1700mm between gunwales.
Cheers,

Well this would be fun - and certainly worth a try around some shallows reefs which hold good numbers of snapper
It went 20lb and was taken while popping for Kingies

Thousands of dead fish wash up on WA beaches
Submitted by bod on Wed, 2011-03-09 21:34Thousands of dead fish have been washing up on WA beaches
- From: PerthNow
- March 09, 2011 7:17PM
EXPERTS say that record temperatures and low oxygen levels are to blame for dead fish being washed up on riverbanks and beaches across WA.

Dead fish, eels and crayfish have been found on shores with the coastline of Green Head, some 290km north of Perth, being covered in washed up carcasses.
Green Head resident Rod Wilson said: "It's very heartbreaking. I've been here for 28 years and I've never seen anything like it. To us it's a local ecological disaster."
Reports state that in a clean up operation at Green Head, 20km north of Jurien Bay, more than 15000 dead fish were collected.
"Our biggest concern is how long is this going to take to right itself," Mr Wilson added.
Experts say WA's coastal waters have seen the highest rise in temperature in the world with up to 4C rise than normally seen this summer.
Dr Brian Jones from the Department of Fisheries said: "Anybody who as sat in Perth for the last few months without air conditioning knows what heat does.
"Fish are the same. They are cold blooded so they feel the heat."

gold coast/port douglas charter
Submitted by turts on Wed, 2011-03-09 18:50gday guys
family member has moved to the QLD recently. planning a visit sometime this year and as always keen to hit up the fishing on offer one of the days. will be visiting both port douglas and the gold coast.
due to time constraints would only be able to get on board single day charters, but keen to hit up most game species eg. kings, tuna, dolphinfish, cobia, trevally etc etc
does anyone know if this fishing is accessible by single day charter up that way?
had a look on google and other places and there seems to be quite a few charters. can imagine being a popular tourist destination there would be a fair few average ones so just after opinions/experiences of any good charters to point me in the right direction.
cheers

Esperance Archipelago Offshore Angling Classic
Submitted by Watto75 on Wed, 2011-03-09 13:57Hey guys,
A mate has talked me into going down to Esperance from Kalgoorlie this weekend for the fishing comp, having only boat fished in Esperance once and mainly in the bay I was hoping for some local knowledge. I dont expect any secret spots or exact GPS co-ords or anything but just some idea roughly how far out and what direction I should be looking to go to get some decent reef species. In particular out East as it looks like it will blowing a bit later in the day and I'd prefer to come back with it.
Rest assured I wont be getting down there very often and I'm not into hitting a spot and raping it. Any advice would be much appreciated and PM if you feel more comfortable.
Cheers Watto

Opinion on Lowrance Sounders
Submitted by Heinz on Tue, 2011-03-08 14:36Hi All,
Was thinking of getting a new sounder for the old boys boat and we were looking at a Lowrance HDS7. I just wanted to see if anyone has one on there boat now or if they have a better option?
The main fishing we will be doing is bottom bouncing within 70 metres deep, trolling, inshore reefs etc.
Cheers Chris.

Kalbarri on kayaks
Submitted by Spinnerak on Tue, 2011-03-08 13:47Going to kalbarri these school holidays,
So we want to get some good size tailor and maybe a mulloway with it to, and we won't really use the kayaks to fish out of, just to get
to the other side of the river so we can fish the more remote locations like oyster rock.
Whats the best way to target these tailor, lures or bait and what tides are best.
Anything would be helpful,
Thanks,
Andrew

Scooter stolen from Woodmans Sunday arvo
Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 2011-03-08 13:09Hi Guys,
A mate of mine went for kiteboarding lessons on Sunday arvo from Woodies, and is from Brizzy, so he hired a scooter for the long weekend!
Some bastards stole it from the parking area between 2pm and 4pm on Sunday arvo, and guess what - the hire company is not insured, so he is now up for a $1500 credit card penalty - just about the price of a new scooter!!
So 2 lessons here - don't park at Woodies and don't hire a scooter before checking the insurance clauses..
Let me know if anyone was there and saw anything please, cops doubt they will find it..
Cheers,
Dave

Flat battery
Submitted by Shane O on Tue, 2011-03-08 10:01Hi,
Started Ol Yella in the driveway, no problems there. Got to the boat ramp and sounded like it wanted to start, but would not turn over. Disconnected the fuel, thought it might be flooded. Still nothing, checked the starter motor. It was very hot then I tried again and nothing... Just a clicking noise from the choke, check the battery indicator and the green light that says all ok was gone...
Is a bad thing to have a hot starter motor, or is it normal.

Big Marlin
Submitted by slam on Tue, 2011-03-08 09:59Had my first attempt at marlin fishing yesterday. We had 2 outfits in the spread, 24 & 37 with tiagra50's, trolling around in the 200-300m mark. Didn't know what to expect & was very surprised when the outrigger went off with a bang & line started peeling off, luckily on the 37 outfit! This became apparent when we saw a huge marlin with both of us putting a weight of at least 150kg on it jump out of the water. 5mins of frantic preparing the boat & harnessing up & we set ourselves in for the long haul! With many jumps which still confirmed the size we both thought on how we were going to bring it boatside being that big & only in a 6m boat & just 2 of us on board! Unfortunately after 45mins of a gruelling battle the hook was spat but we were happy with the result & a huge learning curve. What a fish & what power.
Plenty of dollies out there but a bit finicky with only one brought on the boat & a few stipped tuna to finish off the day on light plastic gear.
What an eye opener for Metro marlin. Didn't think i would see that day for me.

Persistence Pays
Submitted by knigit on Tue, 2011-03-08 08:46Headed up to Geraldton with a mate for the long weekend, with the hope that I'd get away from some of the crowds. Geez it was hard work to get a line out, with serious southerlies blowing and back breaking clumps of weed ready to pounce on a rig the second it hit the water. Did a 13 hour day of fishing on Saturday and 10 the next.
Caught my first mulloway and I'm still grinning. Can't even add up the amount of time and money invested into this little bugger over the years but what the heck it's finally worthwile.
Also got myself a nice 2kg estuary cod, which tasted fan-damn-tastic.
Really helpful and friendly locals up that way (apart from one extended family of you know who) happy to tell us city slickers where to go and what to fish for. All in all a great trip, and I can see myself heading up that way again. Might take the windsurf gear next time as that's a failsafe method of killing a seabreeze instantly.

left hand overheads?
Submitted by silly on Mon, 2011-03-07 22:30Thinking i might buy myself a new overhead before heading up to exmouth. Currently using a 114 senator but will be doing a bit of trolling so looking for something with lever drag. Are there any left hand overhead reels which have lever drags? Something like a tyrnos 30/50 would be ideal in terms of price and size. Does anything like that exist?
cheers

Close Call With a Bunker Bay Marlin
Submitted by Seaquest on Mon, 2011-03-07 20:32Went out for a troll today to try and get some more tuna off Bunker bay. With a few rumors of marlin around I decided to chuck on the out riggers and get out the teasers. After ten minutes of trolling a deep diver lure started to jump around as it was tangled my mate picked it up to start winding it in and all off a sudden the reel started screeming and something had hooked up. Before we knew it we had a marlin hooked up and it was jumping out the back of the spread. After a short fight it spat the hook. Couldn't believe it we just missed a great oppotunity to catch a marlin in the bay. Had two soft grasses out and it had to take a small deep diver that was ment for the tuna. The lure had small trebles on and there wasn't much chance of getting a good hook up with them. Trolled for another few hours with no result. Did see another marlin free jumping about 200m away from us. Pretty devastated about loosing a once in a life time fish but thats fishing. Will be given it a good crack the next few days to try and catch one.
