Fishing in Wellington Dam
Submitted by Velcor94 on Wed, 2014-01-22 12:52Hey guys,
I'm going down to Wellington dam in the coming weeks for the weekend, wondering what kinda fish I might be after and what lures/bait I should use? I will also be fishing from a kayak. Not really after marron but I'm gonna sort out which license to get in a few days

Forecasts recently
Submitted by Tradewind on Wed, 2014-01-22 11:32I usually look at both Seabreeze and Willy weather (Garden Island)
Is it just me or does it seem recently the forecasts have been really off
Yesterday was supposed to be windy, but looking at the graphs for Garden Island it stayed nice and low and you could've had a very relaxing day out
Last night it was supposed to blow but was pleasant instead

Spot(s) available - Southern Oman Monster GT Trip, October 2014
Submitted by dkonig82 on Tue, 2014-01-21 22:09By now I'm sure you have probably read enough reports on all the major forums about the GT fishing in Southern Oman to know that it is likely the best accessible spot in the world to target trophy class (50kg+) GTs.
I have got a trip coming up in late October, fishing with No Boundaries out of their lodge in Southern Oman.
The trip itinerary is to arrive in Salalah on 25 October, fish 5 days (26-30 October) and leave Salalah on 31 October. We will be targetting the monster GTs as well as doing some of the world class in-shore topwater fishing. A review of that can be found here http://ebbtideadventures.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/southern-oman-inshore-top-water-fishing.html Will also be doing some jigging of course, but this isn't the main focus of the trip.
The best flight option is to book flights to Dubai, and then a seperate connecting flight to Salalah. There are many good options to choose from and prices are around $1500.
Cost for the trip is around US$2500pp. This includes 5 days fishing, accomodation, all meals, transfers to/from airport and represents great value in my book. This is based on 4 guys to the boat and a non-refundable deposit of 50% is required on booking.
If you are interested in coming please PM me. I will have 1 or potentially 2 places available (though likely 1). You'd be fishing with a good bunch of guys who are experienced anglers.
By the way we are chasing someone who has done at least one topwater trip before, as nobody wants to take a treble to the face from a rogue cast!

Where to catch a marron?
Submitted by Can't Catch on Tue, 2014-01-21 21:30Can anyone give us a good little spot to catch a few decent marron cos im sick of going home empty handed? Around the dams are full of bogans who ruin your night and snaring is pretty hard. Tried the Harvey river with no success as well. PM me if you dont want to advertise a good spot. Cheers

Thresher Shark off the southwest
Submitted by fenny38 on Tue, 2014-01-21 18:10Has anyone else encountered a thresher shark off the southwest?
I hooked one not long ago it was over 3 meters long and launched 2 meters out of the water. The stella 20000 was smoking and had no chance of stopping the big boy.

No Mercy Rule?
Submitted by AaronC on Tue, 2014-01-21 08:54Hi FW's,
Went out Saturday and had someone throw up from 5:15am till 1pm.
Unfortunately for him I have a no mercy rule on my boat. If your sick you tough it out until everyone decides its time to come in.
Unfortunately for me I sometimes get sick as well. Same rule applies. I have spent many hours on my back throwing up bile.
Does anyone else have this rule on their boat or am I being a bit harsh?

should i be worried
Submitted by petermac on Mon, 2014-01-20 19:36when I got back from o/s last week I noticed there was a bit of a stain on the pavers under my outboards leg (80 hp yamy only done 47 hrs) I wiped my finger over it and it is oil and I noticed a tiny drop hanging of the leg , the boat had been sitting for 4 weeks while I was away I cant find where the oil is from it is just there , I am guessing less than quarter of a thimble full to make the stain it has made , should I be worried its still under warranty

Shimano vs Daiwa service
Submitted by dkonig82 on Sun, 2014-01-19 18:32Not trying to start a Shimano vs Daiwa argument here. Just wanting to share a recent experience getting some reels serviced.
Reels sent were an Ocea Jigger 4000P and a Saltiga LD35. Sent to Shimano/Daiwa respectively for service on the same day while I was at the post office.
The Ocea Jigger I was sending for a service because it had done a lot of work (including a few overseas trips) and a small screw had fallen out of the handle mechanism (the screw that holds the locking nut for the handle retainer in place - second time this has happened).
The Saltiga I was sending for a service because although it had only done a total of 6 days on the water from brand new (4 days on one trip, 2 days on another before this started happening) grease had started leaking out of the lever drag mechanism. Also it had caught a shitload of fish in that time so thought I'd get the drag checked.
End result - Shimano replaced 2 bearings and serviced the reel and feels like new. Total labour cost $20+GST.
Daiwa replaced no parts on the Saltiga. Labour cost $65+GST and took 3 weeks longer to get back to me than the Shimano did.
This is the only Daiwa I've ever owned so not leaping to any conclusions - it is more just a "Thanks!" to Shimano. Ive had this experience every time I send reels to service with them, which is a few times a year.

Overhead Reel - Talica
Submitted by klaus heissler on Sun, 2014-01-19 16:48G'day Everyone
Im totally new to boat fishing and im after some advice on what reel size i should be looking at. I thought i'd give it a go and got myself a tinny its not big, about 3 metres so I can't imagine being able to go out very far. The only other boats i'd be fishing off would be the odd charter maybe once a year. The problem is im not even sure what depth i'd be fishing in or what species i'd be able to find as im still pretty inexperienced. I know pinkies and tailor are in the cards but are the bigger fellas like dhuies and sambos out of the question for a small boat? or even spanish macks?
I'm mainly going to use this reel for bottom fishing with big sinkers and a bit of trolling around Perth maybe even a couple of hours north or south if its worthwhile. Im intending to run 30-50lb braid with a wind-on mono leader to absorb the shock when trolling. I haven't got a rod yet and any input on that would be appreciated as well but i was hoping to get the reel sorted first. I'm after a light-ish combo so i'd feel like im getting trashed when a big one is hooked but at the same time i know im not under gunned at all, if that makes sense.
So i'm pretty much sold on the shimano Talica but not sure which size to get. Not sure if the 8 will cut it. Considered the 10 but have been told that wider spooled reels are a PITA to keep levelled or is it something that i'd eventually get used to. Had a look at the 12 but it seemed like an overkill. is it?
I'd love to hear from those of you with more experience bout the size and line capacity i should be going for. Or even better if you have previously owned a Talica. I have the mindset of buying decent gear and only buying once so I can't afford to make a mistake.
Thanks for reading,
Klaus

Medium Plastics outfit for Exmouth
Submitted by Torzar on Sun, 2014-01-19 11:16Hi fellas,
Chasing some ideas and advice on a spinning outfit for my trip to Exmouht mid-year. Will be landbased so need something that will cast reasonably well, the main techniques I will be using are softplastics but I want to be able to chuck a slice and some medium sized hardbodies if the need arises. Not sure how heavey to go; need to be able to handle some larger fish without skulldragging the majority of catches and therefore killing all the sport, somewhere around 20lb line I was thinking ? On the Reel side of things I have been looking at either 4000 daiwa or a 5000 shimano but most of the advice I have received is all in Shimanos favour??
Budget is between $600-$800.
keen to hear some advice and opinions!!
Cheers!

Young blokes first dhuie
Submitted by catchalittle on Sat, 2014-01-18 23:08Went out to check the cray pots today bit over due hence nothing in them except for a couple of occies then headed out to the 40's rigged up the son's rod and dropped his line over was trying to bait up my line when my son Tristen says Dad I have a fish on I turned around to say Tristen its only been down there 10 seconds to see him struggleing to hold on to his rod so over I go partly hold on to the rod for him but said you wind it up yourself and Ill hold part of the rod, after a few minutes up pops a decent sized dhuie a first for my son and not bad for a 8 year old I think his new fishing shirt is bringing him some luck. This was one was kept and after that he caught another dhuie just under size and two breaksea cod the boy is on fire.He was still peeved that his two cray pots didnt produce any crayfish like they normally do

Marron
Submitted by fuzzy79 on Sat, 2014-01-18 20:58I am keen to get away for 2 nights with my 2 year old son and father to try and get some marron. I would like to camp by the river so we can have a few drinks whilst marroning and I am looking for suggestions. I would rather use nets than snares, so I am prepared to travel a bit further south.
Looking at maps and using google searches I have come up with Rooneys Bridge, Fernhook Falls and Wrights bridge as being potential spots. I am told there are less marron in the Blackwood River, so the first two spots may be better. I have also read a bit about Potters Gorge (Wellington dam) and Honeymoon Pool, but I would only be able to snare in the dam and supposedly the locals have overfished the area.
Anybody know whether these sites are any good? Any other suggestions?
Thanks
