Fishing Charter Abrolhos Islands
Submitted by Pacemaker1971 on Thu, 2017-04-27 14:24Hey Guys
I have organised a fishing charter commencing 22nd May to 25th May for 10 or 11 people with Blue Juice Charters.
We currently have 9 people booked so throwing the remaining spot / spots out there if anyone is keen to come along.
Cost is $1260 for one person or if two wish to come along price is $1145 each.
Cost includes shuttle bus from Hillary's Marina on the 22nd up to Gero, accommodation on board for entire trip, food, soft drinks, tackle and bait. Just need to bring your own alcohol if you wish. Charter bus brings you back to Perth Thursday evening the 25th.
I have been on this charter 2 out of the last 3 years and had a blast catching our bag limits every time.
Cheers

Best Plate Ali - 6.7M
Submitted by fat chance on Wed, 2017-04-26 08:17Hi Everyone
After much negotiation, I finally have approval from the boss to upgrade the rig from a 5m Quinny to a 6.7m plate ali. Interested in everyone's thoughts on which way to go - currently leaning towards a Bar Crusher 670HT, but not 100% convinced.

2 batterys, or 1 good one?
Submitted by ElDub on Tue, 2017-04-25 20:28While my boat is out of order I have been doing a bit of work on it and am almost at the electrics. Currently has 1 battery mounted under one of the rear seats on the boat next to where the plastic fuel tanks go, battery is unboxed which I dont like so will be boxing that and thinking of even relocating it for more space for fuel. So couple of questions.... Was taking a small portable jump starter out with me just incase but now thinking of installing a 2nd battery.
Where is the normal place for batterys to be mounted on an 18ft half cabin? Possible / safe to put them in front hatches? Maybe 1 either side for even weight distribution? Probably a prick of a job wiring one up either side though.
Should I install a 2nd battery or just get a good battery and stick with 1 for less weight and less space taken up by batteries and keep taking out jumpstarter?
Any advice or info appreciated. Cheers.

Filleting lessons
Submitted by Dark Tail on Tue, 2017-04-25 17:48So I'm a pro filleter and I've been thinking about making a little extra money on my day off by teaching people how to fillet. Just wanted to float the idea with the brains trust here to see if its worth setting up, get an idea if you guys think its worthwhile or a waste of time.
- class size max 5 people (probs more like 2 or 3 depending on the season/bookings etc), classes on Saturday mornings.
- I'd set you up with a box of fresh fish and a brand new knife and over, say, 2 hours teach you how to fillet (two styles), skin and debone fish. It would be a real hands-on, learn as you go class. All safety gear, aprons supplied too gotta stay clean and in one piece lol.
- You take home the knife and the fish you cut. Quantity of fish will obviously depend on how well you apply yourself! Species of fish will depend somewhat on seasonality and market availability, but I have a 'wish list' of species I know from experience to be best for starter filleters.
- You get me. I've been doing this for quite a few years now, so you'll have the full attention of a helpful pro for a couple of hours. We'll be able to go over technique, really get your hand in and with a bit of coaching to smooth out any bits you have problems with. I train new guys at work, teaching you lot will be pretty similar.
- Class will be suitable for rec fishos, foodies, home masterchefs etc. Beginners who haven't put knife to fish before, and intermediates who can muddle through but would like someone to hold their hand for a day to clean up their technique.
- Class held in a professional seafood environment. NOR location, close to public transport etc. (I won't say where just yet, have to clear it before I go ahead. Don't want to step on any toes till I have my ducks in a row)
- not too sure how much it will cost yet, would love to hear your opinions on what you'd consider reasonable/affordable. So far for cost of materials + a bit on top to make it worth my time I'm looking at around $100 per person. There's wiggle room though, so your input would be valuable in terms of wether you would like it cheaper or if you wouldn't mind paying a bit more in return for a more premium brand of knife or fish to practice on etc.
Opinions? If you think its rubbish, or if you know of someone out there doing this already let me know (prefer the honesty than wasting my time!). Otherwise let me know if you think its a goer, or if there's any features you would like included or changed.
[Admin- hope this is ok? I'm not advertising a business - I don't even HAVE a business yet- just gathering some opinions is all :) ]

Loading trailer
Submitted by Shane O on Fri, 2017-04-21 20:41I'm looking for ways to make loading the boat on the trailer easier, most of the time i am out on my own.. Having a pre existing injury on my right shoulder doesent help matters, and those that have have had those injuries and surgery know that it more than often goes to both shoulders as you compensate.
Anyways winging out of the way, i am finding it hard to get the boat on the trailer straight and can take a couple of goes to line up. Also like to run away when taking it off the trailer as there seems to be alot of rollers and it runs off the trailer. I was looking at the ezi loader for retrieving, but the back of the trailer seems to be very wide between the back rollers with a massive gap in the middle?
Not sure if this is normal or not, also have these things at the back of the trailer. Are they something i could attached a guide to help load?

How much anchor rope is needed
Submitted by gruntre69 on Thu, 2017-04-20 20:56I'm thinking about upgrading my anchor rope. Interested in thoughts on how much is required or desired.
I have a stressfree freefall drum winch which I highly rate. It has about 70 useable meters of 3 strand 8mm nylon and 8mm chain, so I can reliably anchor in maybe 25 meters but have hooked up on rock in 30 meters before.
The drum can hold 90 of 8mm rope and 8mm of 8mm shortlink chain. I think previous damage has shortened it which is why I have 75m now.
I'm thinking of keeping the chain and 10m of the 8mm nylon and putting on 160m of 6mm doublebraid either nylon or polyester. This will increase my anchoring range to around 60-80m for fishing. (The manufacturer rates the drum capacity for this)
There is a possibility to add more if I put 100m of 4 or 5mm dyneema on the bottom of the drum.
Question is: Is it really worth it? It seems like holding a spot on anchor with that much rope out would not really be possible with that much swing which is usual in anything less than perfect weather.
What do you guys think?

Whale, submarine or school of fish!?!
Submitted by br3nno on Thu, 2017-04-20 17:45Just today I was fishing out the back of 3 mile / staggies. In 22-27m of water.
We saw uneven water so went to check it out. And what looked like a school of large fish. It created a WAKE OF WAVES. We went parrallel to it and it wouldve been travelling close to 20 knots. We saw a 25-30cm fish jump out of the water (other times throughout the day too).
Im thinking maybe large tuna? Like 70-100cm. But can they create a wake of waves? We seriously thought it was a humpback whale. Nothing surfaced.
