Surf Reel / Combo Advice
Submitted by Shik on Sun, 2015-04-12 19:43I'm after some advice on re-balancing my surf combos. I have searched around on the forum and looked at some of the existing similar threads already.
I currently have the following three setups
1. A 10ft Finnor Fury with an Okuma NV-80 and 20 pound mono. Got this about 2 years ago when I got back into fishing. It has served me well for herring and even a salmon last year at Bunkers Bay.
2. A 10ft Daiwa AIRD with Daiwa AIRD 4000 Reel and 30pound fireline. This is the one I use the most as it is light and casting distance is good. Last week in Albany I was casting down to the mono backing so I am a bit worried about the size of the spool for more serious beach fishing.
3. A 12ft Shimano Aerowave Surf Graphite Composite Medium-Heavy with Finnor Lethal 100 and 80 pound Sunline Super PE. I haven't really had time to use this much and casting distance is not great probably due to the line width.
I am hoping to have some more time to fish soon and want to get something that increases my casting distance. I will be chasing tailor and hopefully mulloway from the beach. I'm thinking the best way to do this will be to replace the reel on the Aerowave with something a bit more sensible.
Any ideas would be welcome and I'm willing to end up replacing both reel and rod but would prefer to do one at a time. I''m not in a hurry and do not have a budget in mind but let's say up to $200 for a new reel.
Thanks

New Merc 4 strokes
Submitted by ChrisG on Sun, 2015-04-12 19:28Crew
thought I'd post some feedback in regards to my new outboard.
fitted a new model merc 115hp 4 stroke to my old Fraser about 8 weeks ago.
I've just ticked over 70 hours, the past 51 done over the last fortnight whilst on my annual trip to Exmouth/Coralbay.
My initial feedback is as follows:
Quieter than expected at rest;
Noiser than expected at mid and full throttle;
significantly less hole shot than old 2 stroke;
top speed approx2knts more than old 2 stroke on same conditions (39knts);
fuel performance FANTASTIC (stats below);
No fumes or smell whatsoever;
-----------------
51 hours logged over past 2 weeks
total fuel use: 218 litres !!!!!
approx 248nm !!!!!!!
60% time trolling @ between 6-8.5 knots
20% running at rest
remainder 18knots to WO5
suffice to say happy with less than a litre a mile

Submitted by randall df223 on Sun, 2015-04-12 17:14my favorite XD 190 halco laser pro chrome pink isnt swimming properly. After several 'adjustments' to the take off points to try to correct it, I discovered the bib is cracked and loose.
is it worth trying to replace the bib? or just throw it and get a new one?

Wrong day for a maiden sea voyage
Submitted by BarraSlayer on Sat, 2015-04-11 10:25After waiting 5 months for boat to be delivered I'm itching to blood the decks. Two weekends and weathers been crap the whole time. After reading the forecasts on the net I interpreted a gap in it this morning and talked the missus into it last night.
Got up at 5am got the boat ready, and launched from Ocean Reef at 7am. Missus no impressed and it was the worst looking 10-15knot winds and 1.2 m seas I have seen. Had to come back before she is put off fishing/boating permanently!!
Weather seem to only clear up on week days! It is like a cruel form of torture.... Picky is from last week's run down the river.
Fisheries were down there this morning doing there checks which is good. Councils also cleaning up a heap of smash bottles some fwits mush have smash on the road in last night.

Mandurah fishing?
Submitted by RenderedUnsafe on Sat, 2015-04-11 09:56Hey guys, quite new to this fishing business I guess you could say and very new to this forum! Had been going down to Rockingham Jetty repeatedly, just chasing whatever we could get our hands on, and of course releasing them all.
Went down to Mandurah last weekend and caught nothing but a little blowfish and an octopus that held on for the ride, perhaps we were in the wrong spot? Can anyone shed some light on what area in Mandurah to head around to as we were fishing just off shore next to the Cut. Also some ideas on bait? We were using squid for both the blowie and the octopus.
Cheers guys. :)

Peron Fishing Shark Bay
Submitted by Boppo on Sat, 2015-04-11 09:44Brother and I are heading up to Denham next week. I have fished there many times. Usually take a dinghy up to Cape Peron but this time am taking my 5m quintrex.
I am wondering wether we will get that through to Gregories for a beach launch with my Troopie? Otherwise it will be fishing out of Denham.
Any thoughts?

Tandabiddi fish cleaning station
Submitted by Pitty on Sat, 2015-04-11 08:57So now they have removed the cleaning station from tantas, those who still clean their fish at the ramp, what will they be doing with the frames and offal. Has the shire removed the station to save on the cost of emptying the bins everyday and running the water truck out.
I would think that throwing the frames back in the ocean north of the ramp would bring the Sharks in, not an ideal place for them.
Hopefully it's only a short term issue, and something will be put into replace it, particularly as it appears that there will be money coming up for the ramp and car park to be bitumised.
I will be asking around when I am in town next week, but wondering if anyone on here knows what's planned. At this stage we are planning to keep the frames iced and dumping them in the channel the next day.
If the financial burden on the shire is the case surely this is the sort of thing our rbfl money could be used for, as it is direct benefit for those fishing from boats unlike a lot of other things done with the funding.

Boat trailer wheel clamps
Submitted by Dirt on Sat, 2015-04-11 08:15 Hey guys looking for a bit of extra security for my boat and trailer, I allready have a trailer hitch lock but would like to put on a secondary wheel clamp. I really like the Klamp it wheel clamps but unfortunately there is not enough room between the trailer guard and the tyre. My front yard has quite a slope down to the road so if someone wanted to they could pull out the chocks and my boat would end up in the guys house across the road. The clamp will also stop this from happening plus add another form of security against theft. My trailer is a dumbiers dual axle multi roller trailer. Any advise would be appreciated.

Exmouth fish cleaning stations
Submitted by timwalden on Fri, 2015-04-10 18:55Hi folks,
I've seen another post saying the Exmouth fish cleaning stations at Tantabiddi and the Marina were destroyed in the Cyclone. I'm travelling from the UK to Exxy in a few weeks and just wondered if anyone can give me an update on what they're like (plus bundegi) at the moment and what the plan is to fix them.
Thanks!

Cockburn sound
Submitted by Percula on Fri, 2015-04-10 12:35Hi Guys
What is cockburn sound like on a day like tomorrow is predicted. Still fairly rough I imagine?
Once behind the island can you still be in deep enough water for a chance of a pinky or 2 or are they more out in the middle of the sound.
So keen to go fishing but the weather is just crap.

Patagonian toothfish
Submitted by kknlk on Thu, 2015-04-09 18:02Don't know how many of you eat this one let alone know what it is. Personally, I love it and can just about eat it daily if I can afford it even though I can never catch it. It lives in Antartic waters in 4-6 degrees. It's taken some time for the Aussie industry to get its act but this fish has MSC certification so that's great. What's not so good for us consumers is that locally it's set to disappear. What's happened is the fishermen holding the licences have got new boats to fish deeper for the bigger fish. This costs more and so retail price can be expected to increase but not quite as they have found better prices in China. So whatever they catch is going there. If you like to eat toothfish you'll need to be quick. The retail outlets that I know carry this fish are running out and have been told that it'll not be replaced. The almighty dollar strikes again!

Cracker dhu
Submitted by joe m on Wed, 2015-04-08 20:27Went for an arvo bash off Lano today with regular decky Craig. Found new ground less than half way to destination that couldn't resist a drop. The result was 12 dhuies, 3 pinkies, 4 big skippy couple Sargent bakers and a decent yellow tail kingy. Good to see Craig boating fish of the day. Wanker!

Exploding Batteries - BEWARE!
Submitted by Formerathlete on Wed, 2015-04-08 08:21I was sitting watching TV last night when a massive bang came from the patio. The eBay cheapie headlamp I had on charge had exploded and set fire to a cloth bag nearby. I have had this thing for over a year but haven't had a problem before. This was potentially a very dangerous situation. Lucky i was there to quickly put the fire out. I'm chucking out the spare unit I have and won't ever be tempted to buy this cheap crap again. I have read countless times before and now I urge everyone: use the site sponsors to buy local (and safe)..jpg)
